Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 24.2
Chapter 24.2
Wen Yishu was finally out of patience. She looked at her friend’s dazed face and grabbed her collar: “It’s fine if you want to die. I shouldn’t have saved you in the first place. I’m telling you, you can go wherever you want. I’m giving you one last chance now. Either you come with us, or you die here.”
After she finished speaking, she threw You Ning aside and checked the injury on Bai Mi’s arm.
There was a purple bruise on her arm that was bleeding. She said a low “thank you,” suppressed the nameless anger in her heart, simply treated the wound with a cotton swab and iodine, and then bandaged it up.
You Ning seemed to have sobered up a little. She stood up with the help of the other two, swaying.
She was really crazy just now. No one had done anything wrong. The one who was wrong was herself. If she hadn’t told her parents to come pick her up, would everything be different now?
You Ning was drained of all her strength. She lowered her head and apologized to the two of them: “I’m sorry.”
Bai Mi shook her head and didn’t say anything. Wen Yishu didn’t even look at her again.
She tightened her backpack and quickly ran toward the better part of the mountain.
This area was a scenic resort, so most of the mountains were made of rocks. The vegetation was also dense small grass, not like the lush forests down the mountain.
Their way up the mountain was much easier. You Ning was silent the entire way, just crying.
Wen Yishu sighed and didn’t say anything more after all.
The part of the road where they were standing just now was swallowed by a huge wave. If they had been a few dozen seconds later, everyone would have died there.
There was no reason to die with You Ning.
Wen Yishu exhaled. She had never climbed a mountain so fast. The others, who didn’t have her ability, were even more out of breath. The group rested in a stone gazebo.
The staff in this scenic area had long been gone. They were either dead or had run away. Not many of the large trees around had mutated. Only a banyan tree had become very huge. Its aerial roots hung down like ghost hands. Wen Yishu had a gut feeling that this tree was a little dangerous.
After telling the group to pay attention to the surroundings, she got closer to the staff office.
It seemed to be undamaged. Although the group in the stone gazebo was not exposed to the rain, the drafts everywhere and the lack of cover made them feel very uncomfortable.
She and Bai Mi exchanged a look, understanding each other’s thoughts.
Bai Mi’s right hand was a little clumsy. Wen Yishu simply took her toolbox. The two of them left their backpacks in the stone gazebo for the rest of the group to watch over. They quickly crossed the concrete and reached the office area of the scenic spot opposite.
The door was locked. The facilities inside were intact, with no signs of damage.
Bai Mi started to pick the lock. Her wrist felt a little stiff when she turned it, not as smooth as before.
Wen Yishu asked: “Are you okay? We can treat your wound after we get inside.”
Bai Mi’s pale face was turned to the side, exhaling a puff of white air: “No need. It’s not a problem. It’ll get better soon.”
With a “click,” the electronic door lock was completely removed. Wen Yishu waved to the others in the distance, signaling for them to come over.
The summer in Binhai City was very hot, and the winter was not cold. The layout of the room was very simple: a few summer lounge chairs, a display cabinet, a central office desk, and an electric kettle.
A defibrillator and various emergency medicines were locked in the cabinet. The types seemed to be very complete.
There was also a monitoring room inside. The holographic screen was turned off, so there was only a large white wall next to a snack cabinet. The cabinet door was not locked.
Wen Yishu opened it to check and found that it was filled with snacks. They were all famous local specialties of Binhai City: dried figs with dried mango, coconut powder, a few self-heating meals, and all kinds of instant food.
The junk food that she rarely touched on weekdays looked very delicious at this moment. She heard her stomach growl. The huge physical and ability consumption from the morning until now made her hungrier than usual.
She took out the sealed bag and emptied all the snacks inside.
When she returned to the room, she found that Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang were moving charcoal from under the conference table. She wondered what the staff of this scenic spot were thinking. They actually had a full set of barbecue equipment.
Did they barbecue when there were few people? That would be a bit too blatant.
However, this made it convenient for them to keep warm. Most of her things were left in the Rhine apartment.
She didn’t know if the tsunami would wash away the apartment, but looking at the impact, the pressure on the top few floors should be less. The smart butler would activate the lockdown to let the tsunami pass, but the lack of oxygen in the rooms could also suffocate people to death.
Wen Yishu no longer thought about the apartment. The task of starting the fire was given to them. She was responsible for heating up these self-heating foods.
After the charcoal was lit, the room became much warmer. Although the houses in Binhai City had poor cold resistance, having a fire was better than having no fire. The group ate some of the self-heating food and snacks and planned to spend the night on this mountaintop. After all, if they left in the afternoon, they didn’t know if they could find a good shelter at night.
The tsunami outside came like a mountain and slowly receded like dust. The water level only dropped a little.
All kinds of things were floating on the water surface. Debris, wooden windows, mixed with broken ice, cut everything to pieces. There were even human corpses.
The human corpses looked very fresh, not like they had been dead for a long time.
It seemed that the number of people who died at the beginning was not as many as Wen Yishu had expected. These survivors were most likely washed out by the tsunami because they didn’t have time to evacuate.
She rubbed her frozen hands and quietly observed the outside. Huang Fei placed everyone’s sleeping bags on the central conference table. They were going to make do here for the night.
Wen Yishu had no objections. She opened the white electronic screen of her quantum computer, gently swiped her finger, and displayed the map in front of everyone: “Our destination is here. The safe city established by the Federation is most likely in the west city, where Rhine’s headquarters are. We’ll go to the Haishi district. After we get there, everyone can act freely.”
She didn’t intend to drag everyone along forever. After all, everyone had different ideas, and maybe they had things they wanted to do more.
Huo Xiaoguan asked a little anxiously when she heard this: “Xiao Wen, aren’t you coming with us?”
She didn’t want to lose a partner like Wen Yishu. After all, her ability was obviously very strong.
If they separated from her, they would be the ones at a disadvantage.
Other than Bai Mi, the three of them glanced at You Ning without a trace. They couldn’t help but guess if Wen Yishu had the idea of parting ways with them because of what You Ning did to her just now.
Wen Yishu shook her head. She explained: “The two places are not far apart. The center of the safe zone should be in one area. We found that the plants are not moving, so the officials should have found that out too.”
She paused, looking at Huo Xiaoguan’s hopeful eyes. She knew that these people didn’t want to be separated from her, whether as a friend or as a companion who could protect them.
“So when you get there, this area should be safe.”
She pulled out the official live feed of Binhai City to show them. Only then did they feel a little relieved.
The entire map of Binhai City had turned red. Only a small area in the middle was green. The establishment of the safe zone was very small. The Federation was still expanding outward, but the speed was not ideal.
She didn’t know how many people were in that small green area now. The real-time information about Binhai City on the live feed was exploding. News of the tsunami spread like a plague on internet channels. All kinds of messages looking for family members were endless. People who lived by the sea were most afraid of typhoons and tsunamis.
All the people in the city center found that the abnormal movements of the plants had decreased in the past two days and came out to hoard goods. Some even wanted to take a boat to escape directly.
So there were not few people at the pier. Since the tsunami, the internet was almost a mess. People were calling on the Federation to organize rescue teams as soon as possible.
While other places didn’t need people now, they should immediately send out search and rescue teams to the seaside to search for survivors.
But how could they save people in a tsunami? The waves had not receded yet. Now, a boat entering the water was like a small paper boat in a river. It didn’t need much of a storm. A single wave that hadn’t receded would kill them.
Wen Yishu looked at these crazy comments and closed the live feed. They all seemed to have lost their basic common sense. In today’s highly developed technology, humans were not omnipotent.
No one else raised any objections. Whether it was avoidance or tacit consent, Wen Yishu had already decided on what would happen next.
The group found the small backup energy source in the scenic area and generated electricity. The power source on the mountain seemed to be independent. These were probably prepared for when there was a power outage. They also benefited Wen Yishu and the others.
The warm yellow light came on. The small house on the mountaintop was not drafty. The huge windows showed a terrifying view outside, like a lighthouse standing on a lonely island. There were no living things appearing around it.
Wen Yishu used some cardboard to block the windows to prevent the light from leaking out. Due to the cold, the central air conditioner could not be turned on at all. The group could only put the charcoal on the ground and leave a small gap in the doors and windows to ensure they would not get carbon monoxide poisoning.
Huang Fei, who was tired after a long day, went to sleep first. She just had to listen to where the others were going. Not causing trouble was her greatest strength.
The group was still looking at the map to check the route. There was still no information about superpowers on the live feed.
Wen Yishu couldn’t help but feel suspicious. If it was true, the lag was too strong.
The tsunami was a good way to cover up the underground shelter. Other than Wen Yishu, the others still wanted to go back to Rhine.
She also couldn’t help but think about whether it was a good choice to go back to her old employer. After all, the hiring conditions were so harsh. She had to go through five levels and defeat six generals to finally become a researcher.
But now that she had superpowers, things became tricky.
She couldn’t pretend that she didn’t know about the existence of the fish people in the underground laboratory. The fact that they had human characteristics, used human bodies for experiments, and that the test subjects had all mutated was definitely not an ordinary trial of a new drug.
Wen Yishu suspected that the higher-ups had genetically modified these test subjects, incorporating some other genes. This kind of inhumane and dangerous behavior made it difficult for her to imagine that it was something that Rhine, which was outwardly righteous and known as the light of humanity, could do.
Wen Yishu remembered the expression on Wang Li’s face before she died. That kind of unwillingness and resentment. It seemed that once a person changed, they could no longer restrain the desires in their heart.
There were definitely more than one of these experiments. Wang Li was definitely not the highest research commander in the apartment building.
These obvious clues connected together, making her unable to help but turn her gaze away and no longer look at the location of Rhine.
Seeing Wen Yishu suddenly stop the discussion, Ling Shuang followed her gaze and saw “Warp Speed Life,” the largest local pharmaceutical company in Binhai City.
Wen Yishu’s words implied a different route from theirs. Her heart suddenly tightened: “Xiao Wen, where are you looking?”
As a pharmaceutical company that could openly rival Rhine, Warp Speed had not given Rhine a hard time over the years.
There were countless methods, such as poaching employees, malicious competition, raising the unit price of the supply chain, large-scale price dumping in the market, stealing business secrets, and so on.
The non-compete agreement that all Rhine employees signed upon joining was aimed at Warp Speed. Once they jumped ship, the departing researchers would be financially ruined.
Wen Yishu’s eyes fell on a factual statement: “I’m going to Warp Speed.”
