Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 23
Chapter 23
Wen Yishu turned around in less than a second, and the dagger was already in front of the black figure. The curtain moved slightly. Wen Yishu pulled it open.
A pitch-black figure was standing at the window, even shrinking further in under her gaze.
On the black face where only the features were visible, a look of panic appeared. It seemed that it had not expected Wen Yishu to be able to find it.
Wen Yishu kicked the person in the corner hard, sending it flying directly to the opposite wall.
The wind she created lifted the curtain and it slowly fell back down. A person who was completely black twitched and crawled on the ground.
With just one kick, she was able to make it unable to move. Wen Yishu was a little surprised by her own strength.
She pulled the curtain shut and walked over. She called for the smart butler. The moment the lights came on, she saw the true appearance of the black figure.
A human-like creature, about 1.6 meters long and covered in black fish scales, was lying on the ground.
The color of its body seemed to change with the surrounding environment. The black fish scales on its body gradually turned into a light yellow, adapting to the space like a chameleon.
Wen Yishu kicked it. Its fish head moved, but it still lay motionless on the ground.
“Stop faking it. If you keep faking it, I’ll kill you.”
The eyes on the fish head slowly opened, and Bai Mi’s voice came from its mouth: “Why are you treating me like this? You were just holding me.”
Its voice sounded incredibly wronged, a far cry from the team leader’s usual image. Wen Yishu mercilessly kicked it on the head: “I told you to stop faking it. Your height and body shape are not right, and you’ve already turned into a fish head.”
The short blade in Wen Yishu’s hand mercilessly stabbed into its head. The resistance from the solid fish flesh made the downward movement of the short blade pause for a moment.
The fish person immediately let out a high-pitched scream. Its fins blocked the knife, and it quickly stood up. Its voice returned to normal: “How did you find me?”
Wen Yishu did not answer and kicked it again, but this time the fish person twisted and dodged.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t have come in at all. Didn’t you see what happened to your kind outside?”
Wen Yishu hated arrogant fish people the most. The fact that it was able to get in meant that it must have seen how she hunted down the minister.
It was infuriating that it was so stupid as to hide in her room. It seemed that the arrogance that humans had, Variants also had.
This was simply a one-sided slaughter. The fish person never thought that it had chosen the fastest path to death when it opened the door and snuck in.
Scales flew in the room. Wen Yishu’s technique was a little unorganized. People living in the modern world, unless they were passionate about cooking, basically never cooked.
Watching someone kill a fish and doing it yourself felt completely different. Perhaps she was a little numb, but Wen Yishu didn’t feel any fear at all.
After digging out the fish person’s eyes, she opened the window and had the branches outside drag the body away.
She opened her quantum computer to ask about the situation of the others. Finding that there were no other fish people in the room, she lay down to sleep.
The fishy smell in the room was completely absorbed by the plants. Wen Yishu had a good night’s sleep.
She woke up early the next day and went downstairs to see Bai Mi sitting in the living room. The others had not yet gotten up. Breakfast was already on the table.
She ate and continued to perfect the downloaded map of Binhai City, familiarizing herself with the surrounding terrain to prepare for the subsequent evacuation.
Rhine’s rescue information was sent to every researcher’s quantum computer in the morning.
The red notification was particularly eye-catching, pinned above all other applications.
Binhai City, a large province in the Federation with a population of about 80 million, had a current death toll of about one million. The data was still being continuously updated and was rising.
It was surprising that Rhine was able to find a rescue team in such a short time. Wen Yishu had thought it would take at least another week.
The person who signed the rescue message was Rhine Headquarters, and the person they were connecting with was You Zhi, the director of the research center. The rescue time was set for tomorrow.
But the door below had been completely locked. The people in the underground shelter probably didn’t know that Wang Li had died and that the safe exit had disappeared. Otherwise, these people would have already started to cause a commotion.
Wen Yishu finished the hot milk in her cup, rubbed her slightly cold hands, and called the people upstairs to get up.
“Let’s go to the rooftop now. I’ve already looked at the terrain map. It’s still raining outside. It’s safest to leave now. The Binhai City center has already established a defensive city.”
Huo Xiaoguan asked: “Xiao Wen, aren’t we going to wait for the director to come?”
Wen Yishu was silent. She knew that everything that had happened in the past two days had exhausted people. Huo Xiaoguan still subconsciously wanted to trust Rhine.
She believed that the Federation would take care of everyone. If she had not been targeted by the minister, she might have had the same idea.
But everything that happened yesterday told her that she couldn’t just sit and wait. She couldn’t passively wait for rescue anymore.
“How do you think they’ll treat us when they find out we destroyed the samples below?”
She spoke calmly. The faint smiles on the faces of the others disappeared. To be honest, no one regretted killing the monsters below. What future was there to consider when their lives were at stake?
Ling Shuang put her hands up in a gesture of surrender and threw herself onto her knees: “Seriously, I give up.”
Wen Yishu turned her gaze to You Ning. Her friend spread her hands: “I’ll listen to you.”
Huang Fei was still a little confused listening to their conversation, but she didn’t have any background. The best thing was to survive. She didn’t care about rescue or not and directly stood on the side of agreement.
Only Bai Mi had not expressed her opinion. The milk in her hand had long since cooled down. A layer of milk skin had formed on top, allowing one to imagine the rich taste when poured into the mouth.
Seeing Wen Yishu looking at her, she nodded without hesitation.
The group first packed their backpacks and then went up to the rooftop.
Perhaps it was because some equipment was placed on the rooftop, Wen Yishu found that the lock above was not the sturdy smart lock like the one below, but a regular door lock.
Bai Mi took out the toolbox she had prepared early on and started to pick the lock without a word.
Before long, the lock was completely removed.
There was also a fence outside with a simple, thick chain on it. Wen Yishu found this old-era product strange. The people above probably thought that no one would come up to the rooftop, so this area had a normal protective door lock.
The rooftop was an open helipad. The cold wind was blowing fiercely. The group came out from inside. The fine rain was hitting everyone’s faces. Wen Yishu couldn’t help but put on her hat. The damp air drilled into her nostrils. The air outside was very fresh, like being in the mountains.
The situation outside was not as bad as they had imagined. There were not many mutated plants. Most of the plants had withered after the cold snap arrived.
The mutated plants were also as quiet as they were before the mutation. However, the huge plant bodies still made people feel a sense of dread.
In front was the vast, boundless sea. The surface of the sea was a dull lead-gray. The undulating water was like a disturbed ball of ink. Broken ice layers were rolled by the waves and rushed onto the beach.
There was fog on the sea. The area further away was not visible. Wen Yishu vaguely saw a giant ship slowly approaching from a distance.
She said softly to You Ning: “Is it here to pick you up?”
The pier not far from here was crowded with people. The hall where people rested before getting on the ship by the sea was now silent.
It wasn’t until they saw the giant ship appear in the distance that they started to discuss again: “It’s here! We’ll be fine as long as we get back to Rongcheng.”
You Ning looked down at her quantum computer. She didn’t know if the signal was bad, but there was no message on it.
She looked into the distance with some uncertainty. The others also saw the giant ship approaching.
It was slowly moving on the sea, constantly approaching the shore.
Wen Yishu opened the camera on her quantum computer, wanting to observe the situation in the distance.
But she found that the seawater that had just been constantly flushing the shore was now suddenly being sucked away by a mysterious force.
The reefs by the beach quickly emerged from the water like fangs. Swirling water marks were left on the sand. From a distance, it looked like a huge tree shadow had appeared on the beach.
The dense fog in the distance dissipated. Wen Yishu finally saw the black shadow rising from the sea level. Her heart trembled violently. Huang Fei’s scream rang out in her ears: “Tsunami! It’s a tsunami!”
