Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 22
Chapter 22
Wen Yishu very naturally withdrew her finger: “Just checking if you still have vital signs.”
She was making a joke, a line Bai Mi had used before.
The other person obviously didn’t get it and looked at her with a blank expression.
Seeing that she was fine, Wen Yishu didn’t tease her anymore. She pointed to the still-warm food on the table and got up, ready to go back to her room.
Although the smart butler for the door lock was disconnected, it could still serve as an alarm when there was electricity.
“I’ll stay here and watch the door.”
Bai Mi said while eating.
Wen Yishu didn’t refuse. Instead, she put another quilt on her: “Cover yourself with the quilt if you’re cold. Don’t push yourself. You’ll get sick.”
Bai Mi looked at Wen Yishu’s back as she walked up the stairs, a little stunned.
All the lights were off, leaving only the small floor lamp by the sofa, emitting a warm glow.
A kind of unprecedented loneliness enveloped her.
The warm food on the table also became a little tasteless. Bai Mi put down her chopsticks and quietly retreated into the blanket, not moving or making any more sound.
The room was pitch black. Wen Yishu closed the door and lay back on the bed. For a moment, she had the illusion that the world was still as beautiful as it was two days ago.
She closed her eyes and felt that the strength in her body was very abundant. She couldn’t sleep, not at all.
Controlling plants was definitely not a power that a normal person could have.
She had only heard of superpowered individuals in the legends of the last century. Those people would be secretly protected by the Federation.
She didn’t know if these rumors were true or not. In short, in the technologically advanced present, she had never heard of any superpowered individuals appearing.
She opened the live feed again and started to check it. She turned on the download settings so that she could still have the latest news before the information was interrupted.
The “Apocalypse Survival Guide” did not mention the appearance of any superpowered individuals. The information in this area was completely blank.
Why was the update so slow? Could it be that people like her had not yet appeared?
Wen Yishu lay in bed. Since she couldn’t sleep anyway, she sat up, looked at the window, and wanted to test her ability.
She didn’t want to get out of bed, so she simply took the clothes from the bedside, hooked them onto the window handle, and opened the window.
The cold night wind blew in. She shivered. She almost forgot that the temperature outside had already reached below freezing.
But the rain was still falling unchanged. It hit her body, cold to the bone. This damp and cold feeling would make people lose body heat faster. Wen Yishu was keenly aware that this rain was unusual, as if it was intentional, limiting both plants and humans.
Most of the plants in Binhai City were tropical varieties. Without the mutation, they would have been frozen to death or injured within a day in this kind of temperature.
Not all of the plants underground had mutated. Through the branches that had reached in from outside, Wen Yishu saw that some of the plants on the ground were already wilted beyond recognition. They would probably completely die tomorrow.
She briefly looked at the terrain. Her location was on the edge of Binhai City. She could only see the beach from a distance with her naked eye.
She had to use the camera on her quantum computer to see that the beach outside was already full of broken ice. The sea was like a bowl of flash-frozen water in a freezer. The cold at the edges made the water flow difficult. She didn’t know if the planet would turn into a giant ice ball if it continued to get colder.
Large amounts of floating ice crashed onto the beach due to the push of the waves. The noisy seagulls were also gone. Although her eyes were still full of green, this quiet and lifeless environment made her feel endless loneliness.
The live feed was full of wailing from people who lacked water and electricity. Even though the Federation was trying its best to provide rescue, it still couldn’t take care of everyone.
The poor people became the first group to be abandoned. They were not starving to death at home. They were freezing to death.
Binhai City was in the south. The northern city of Heihe City was also on the coast, but the situation there was not as good. The temperature was already close to -80°C. This was the northernmost small city in the Federation. It was so cold that some low-performance vehicles could no longer start.
As soon as the power was cut off, these citizens, who had always been in a greenhouse and had never experienced such a harsh environment, would die immediately.
Wen Yishu initially thought that their conditions were tough, but looking at the shivering cold over there, her negative thoughts disappeared.
The branches that reached into the room seemed to be greedy for the warmth of this place and were reluctant to leave Wen Yishu’s hand. She had no choice but to hold the branch and draw the map of the safety passage that she saw.
The quantum computer was not safe. It had Rhine’s location on it. She would have to abandon this object sooner or later. The paper documents of the old era had now become her first choice.
Fortunately, she was not the kind of person who would forget how to write a character after putting down her pen. She had practiced a lot when drawing blueprints and making research tables. It was quite smooth for her to draw.
All of Rhine’s windows could only be opened a little without professional tools. She had discovered this when she was throwing the pearl string succulent.
The door below could also not be opened now due to the minister’s death and Ji Shuyi’s escape, so they were now in a completely inescapable, large, and sturdy cage.
She could only hope that the top floor was not locked. Wen Yishu drew two red circles on the blueprint, one for a skylight and one for the rooftop door. She planned to go up and check tomorrow.
After drawing all of this, it was already one in the morning. She didn’t know how many hours she needed to sleep to feel well-rested, given her current physical condition.
Wen Yishu patted the branch that had reached in and said gently: “See you tomorrow. I’m going to sleep now.”
The branch bent a little. It was a little sad and used its tender new leaves to hook her finger, reluctantly retreating.
Wen Yishu rubbed her arm, which was a little stiff from the wind. She also waved at the Terminalia branches and leaves outside the window that were waving at her, and then gently closed the window.
The wind outside blew the gray curtains, making them move. The corner of her eye caught a glimpse of a black shadow behind the curtain. The light from the desk lamp was a little dim. The moment the curtain fell, the room was once again quiet to the point of suffocation.
Wen Yishu pretended not to see anything. She rubbed her sore arm and quietly observed the area behind the curtain.
A normal person hiding in there would definitely create a bulge. If it weren’t for the wind blowing, she wouldn’t have even noticed that there was something behind it.
Even the Terminalia tree that had just come in did not give her any warning.
Wen Yishu’s first thought was that the fish person from below had gotten in at some point. She slowly turned around, turned on the camera on her quantum computer, and aimed it at the back. One hand pulled out the short blade that was on the table.
In the dim display, a pitch-black hand reached out from behind the curtain.
