Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 19
Chapter 19
She crawled into the elevator almost by instinct.
After the stairwell was blown up, the path above was blocked.
But they seemed to have forgotten about the elevator and did not completely block this escape route. Wang Li collapsed in the elevator, leaning against the wall, panting heavily.
The fear of death was like a dark cloud hanging over her heart. Her legs were completely immobile. This feeling of her life slowly draining away was driving her crazy.
Wang Li’s face was covered in tears and snot. She desperately tried to press the elevator button.
But her body was no longer able to support her standing up. Even raising her hand felt difficult. She knew she was wrong, but she couldn’t help but resent Wen Yishu and the others.
These people had no idea how much she had sacrificed for Rhine. She started working here at the age of 24, and now at 36, she had been in the minister’s position for eight years.
Watching her colleagues climb the corporate ladder while she remained in the same position, Wang Li’s heart became increasingly bitter.
She yearned for an opportunity, eager to prove her worth.
This batch of secretly transported experimental samples was originally nothing out of the ordinary, but the outside world suddenly changed.
When she saw this batch of things mutate, she knew her opportunity had come.
As one of the largest technology companies in the Federation, Rhine’s scope was very wide. She could always find a suitable promotion opportunity for herself.
The higher-ups in Binhai City would definitely not give up on high-end talents. After she went back, as long as she protected these samples, she could get ahead of everyone and do the newest research.
But now everything was ruined by Wen Yishu and the others. Those experimental samples were all dead here.
She herself seemed to have reached the end of her life.
Wang Li felt as if her body was on fire. She was in unbearable pain every moment.
In addition to her burning skin, her blood was also boiling. Green water, just like the one outside, seeped from her wound.
The green water outside the transparent elevator had already reached as high as she was sitting. It seemed as if it would not stop until the entire second level was filled.
She smelled the fishy stench on her body and looked down at herself, finding that her originally smooth hands had grown fine, dense scales.
Wang Li wanted to scream, but at the end of her life, she could no longer make any sound.
Her consciousness fell into endless darkness.
The corpse in the elevator did not stop changing. Wang Li’s original body became a monster just like the fish person.
The wounds on her legs miraculously healed, becoming as normal and healthy as they were before, except that they were covered in fish scales. The green water below quickly retreated in the direction it came from.
It was as if it was rewinding and returned to her body. The scales on her body became more and more like those of the fish people.
Until the end, she had completely transformed into the appearance of the fish people outside.
Only her eyes, which did not have a trace of emotion, were still the same as before.
Wang Li stood up, holding on to the elevator railing, and carefully examined every part of her body. She was scrutinizing this body after being reborn.
She seemed to feel that this body was also very good.
Wang Li returned to her form from when she was alive. She stretched out her finger and pushed the small ring in front of her.
The red words indicating that the elevator had stopped were very conspicuous.
The moment she pressed it, the elevator restarted after a buzzing sound.
The number 8 lit up the moment her fingertip touched it. Wang Li looked up and smiled, her expression incredibly cold.
At this moment, the people in the room were lying on the plush carpet in a chaotic manner, covered with a few down comforters brought from below.
Before they went to sleep, they took everything they could from below. Huang Fei, who was well-rested and did not participate in the fight below, very thoughtfully watched over Wen Yishu, allowing the others to get a full rest.
Bai Mi was also awake. She seemed to not need to rest. She had been sitting in the same position for more than an hour.
Huang Fei touched her neck and felt tired for her.
She was just an ordinary lifeguard in the beach area of Binhai City. Other than swimming, she had no other skills. These researchers were all outstanding talents from Rhine. She felt that she was subconsciously inferior to them in terms of aura, so she didn’t know how to speak up and stop her.
She could only keep an eye on her to make sure nothing went wrong.
The buildings outside were riddled with holes. The towering skyscrapers that looked magnificent on weekdays were so vulnerable to this sudden collective riot of plants and animals.
If they hadn’t taken her in, she would have probably died outside.
The Rhine building was so safe it didn’t look like a normal apartment. Huang Fei occasionally looked out the window that had not been covered by plants.
There were red and green plants everywhere, with a few people who had been bleached white by the rain hanging sparsely on them. Due to the drop in temperature, the corpses did not rot quickly and looked like fruits swaying on the branches.
Huang Fei was startled by her own thoughts. Goosebumps rose all over her body, and she no longer dared to look outside.
When she turned around, she saw that Bai Mi, who had been sitting upright in front of the sofa, had stood up at some point.
She placed the warm yellow blanket that she had been wearing on Wen Yishu, revealing her own thin clothes.
Huang Fei felt cold and couldn’t help but ask: “Is it okay for you to be wearing so little?”
Bai Mi nodded, put on the bulletproof vest that was on the coffee table, and picked up the flamethrower: “I’m going to take a look.”
Huang Fei was a little confused. She quickly went forward to stop her: “What’s wrong? Why are you going out? I’ll go with you.”
She was worried about Bai Mi going out alone. After all, things were not normal now. It was safer for two people to go together. If anything happened, they could call for help. After all, Ling Shuang told her that the apartment was not very safe right now.
Bai Mi shook her head, stopping her from trying to wake the others. She pointed at the quantum computer on her hand and lowered her voice: “You stay here. I’ll be back soon.”
Her unquestionable tone made Huang Fei sit down in a daze. She watched Bai Mi’s back as she opened the door and thought for a while but still did not wake the others.
Ling Shuang had just taken off her quantum computer and given it to her. She had never used such a new product. Her phone signal was a little unstable at this time, but the quantum computer was not at all.
Her hand holding the quantum computer tightened. She was nervous and stared at the door, hoping that Bai Mi would come back soon.
The corridor was quiet. The continuous rainy weather made it impossible to distinguish between day, dusk, or night.
The temperature in the room was much higher than outside. The air she exhaled instantly condensed into white mist, swirled, and then disappeared. It was so cold.
Bai Mi clenched her fists, listening to Aix’s voice in her helmet: “The elevator has been repaired. Minister Wang Li is in the elevator.”
The numbers were broadcast in her ear. The sightseeing elevator was very fast. It only took a few seconds from the time it was repaired until now.
The moment she came out, she saw the elevator door slowly open. Wang Li slowly walked out.
She saw Bai Mi standing at the door and raised her eyebrows: “Why aren’t you going in? Is Xiao Wen okay? I’m here to see her.”
Her healthy and rosy body formed a strange contrast with her tattered clothes. There wasn’t even a single scratch on her. Her originally miserable look had also disappeared, replaced by a look of contempt.
This was no longer a normal person. She had become a Variant.
Bai Mi said coldly: “No need.”
The friendly smile on Wang Li’s face suddenly disappeared, and her entire face became gloomy: “Get out of the way. With that dead meat you call a body, how long do you think you can stop me?”
“Better than you, a Variant. You’re not even a human anymore.”
Her calm narration made Wang Li furious.
She no longer concealed the changes on her body. All of her scales appeared in an instant.
She turned into a giant, upright walking fish. Her upward-facing mouth curved down, revealing countless sharp teeth inside.
“It’s all because of you! You all ruined my life!”
She roared and rushed toward Bai Mi, determined to bite off her head to vent her anger.
A fish that was charging like a bull slid through the corridor and quickly reached Bai Mi.
She raised the flamethrower expressionlessly. This threat would not cause any substantial harm to her.
But her flamethrower could. The moment Wang Li approached, Bai Mi pressed the flamethrower’s switch.
A huge flame shot out, engulfing her entire fish head.
The expected scream did not come as expected. She only heard a few bubbling sounds of water bubbles bursting. The moment the flame disappeared, Wang Li stood there unharmed.
Bai Mi was a little surprised by her bizarre smile. She wasn’t afraid of fire?
The flamethrower in her hand was already at maximum power. The blue liquid ammunition in the gun disappeared quickly. When it was about to run out, Bai Mi added another one without hesitation.
The speed of the Variant’s evolution was unimaginable. The other fish people were clearly not as flexible as Wang Li.
She was more intelligent and had higher defense and attack power than the other fish people.
The heat from the flamethrower made her knuckles less stiff.
But the ammunition was limited. She hadn’t brought that much out.
Bai Mi frowned and looked at the door behind her. There was no movement inside. She didn’t know when Wen Yishu’s high fever would end.
It was not a wise choice to call the people inside out now. After considering everything, she knew that if she couldn’t defeat the Variant, the people inside, whose physical fitness was not stronger than hers, would only be a hindrance if they came out.
These were the results of Aix’s analysis. The gentle female voice in her helmet asked her: “Do you need to start the self-destruct sequence? Maybe if you throw me out, you can hide in the room.”
The tone of both parties seemed very familiar. Bai Mi replied: “No need. Don’t do anything useless.”
The helmet did not self-destruct as it did on Wen Yishu’s head. Instead, it gave Bai Mi a choice.
Aix’s voice rang out with a hint of regret. This seemed to be due to Bai Mi’s settings. Not allowing the artificial intelligence to directly give commands made it seem more human-like: “It seems you still need me, Researcher Bai Mi. You now have one minute and thirty-six seconds of remaining survival time. Please enter the room to avoid the second-level illusionary Variant before then.”
Artificial intelligence almost marched on the shoulders of humans. All data was synchronized into the database in real-time. The apocalypse survival guide on the live feed was no exception.
Before the second wave of these monsters broke out, the surveillance and data collection in various places had already tallied the existing monsters in the first instance.
The name “Illusionary Beast” was indeed very fitting for this type of Variant.
The beautiful and dreamy description of the fish person only existed in legends. Breaking the shackles of fixed thinking, these ugly faces were revealed without a doubt.
The illusion changed its form and also fooled human minds.
The flamethrower’s ammunition was running out. Bai Mi knew that as soon as the fire pillar in front of her stopped, she would have no more weapons to restrain it.
The fire pillar in front of her gradually became smaller. Wang Li’s hideous face was looming.
Due to prolonged use, the entire flamethrower became incredibly hot. Bai Mi’s hand loosened. With a crisp clang, Wang Li’s mouth-open face came up to her.
Her nostrils were filled with the roasted smell of a live fish, mixed with a disgusting fishy smell that made her want to vomit.
Bai Mi thrust the short blade in her hand toward its eyes. Its short, thick fish fins blocked the tip of the blade as if they were prophetic.
Bai Mi cleanly kicked its scaleless neck. The fish person’s huge gills closed in an instant, holding back her attack.
Its mouth was about to bite Bai Mi’s arm. Aix’s countdown rang in her ear: “Thirty seconds.”
Bai Mi, in a completely impossible posture, supported herself with the doorknob behind her and kicked the fish head again before her other leg had even landed.
Wang Li was restricted and could only endure the kick. It stood still, grinning at Bai Mi.
Its fish fins turned into a hard iron claw, grabbing Bai Mi’s arm. It opened its mouth, about to swallow her head.
Aix’s voice came from the headset, asking again: “Do you want to detonate?”
The doorknob behind her suddenly loosened. A warm hand held hers and pulled her back.
At the same time, the helmet buckle was undone by another nimble hand. Wen Yishu’s voice rang out from behind her: “Aix, start the detonation sequence!”
