Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 17
Chapter 17
Wen Yishu threw away the helmet. The moment her hand released it, Bai Mi kicked it away.
Immediately, the helmet exploded behind her. She saw a few pieces of scales flying through the air, and she imagined that the smell was definitely not pleasant.
If the helmet were still on her head, she would have been dead by now.
But she didn’t have time to think about this. She went up and grabbed Wang Li’s head. The sound of the metal door and her forehead colliding was very loud.
After one hit, Wang Li fell limply.
“Are you not treating your team members like people? Just now you were fearless, and now that there’s an issue, you run faster than anyone. Minister, please show some leadership and take the rear.”
After saying that, Wen Yishu kicked her. Wang Li fell straight down the stairs and into the green water. The crowded exit was instantly cleared.
Ling Shuang looked at her dumbfounded. Wen Yishu was usually a person of few words. This was the first time she had heard her curse.
She had taken down the minister with a single move. She was a little surprised by her change and was too shocked to speak. This was a completely different person from the calm, reserved, and motivated Wen Yishu she knew.
She seemed to have revealed a flamboyant side. She was decisive and did not hesitate, and she instantly turned the situation around.
Not to mention Ling Shuang’s surprise, You Ning, who had been with her for several years, also did not expect that her friend would so decisively take down a person at this critical moment of life and death, and her words were so sharp.
Wen Yishu did not look at the expressions on their faces. Instead, she picked up the two people who had fallen on the ground.
She then kicked Ji Shuyi, who had been secretly tripping them up, and pushed the two people behind her, running frantically upward.
The fish people behind them thrashed in the green water for a bit and quickly found the fastest way to move. They rushed toward the group, one after another.
Their bodies looked a little bigger than the first few fish people they saw above, like a completely evolved, complete body.
The green water in the capsules gushed out endlessly like a fountain.
Wen Yishu felt a surging tide rushing toward her from behind. The passage that was a straight line when they came down now felt incredibly long.
She took out the sticky explosives from Bai Mi’s bag and quickly stuck them on the walls on both sides.
The fuses on top were quickly extended as they were pulled. These waterproof sticky explosives would still detonate even after they went up.
She glanced at Wang Li, who had not gotten up and had been submerged by the fish tide behind her. She took a deep breath.
She wanted to keep these things so badly, so she could just die with them.
Based on the tragic scene in the central lounge, she deserved to die a thousand times over.
These kinds of things should have been destroyed the moment they were discovered.
Instead, for the sake of so-called research, she treated human lives like a game. She hated this feeling of being unable to clean up the mess. It was too awful.
But now, Wen Yishu’s mood was not too bad, because she had already thought of a solution.
The basement level should be built quite sturdily. She just didn’t know if it could withstand so many sticky explosives.
After Wen Yishu had taken two packets in a row, Bai Mi grabbed her hand as she reached for a third time: “Put them on after we go up. This is dangerous.”
The fish people below were getting faster and faster, with no intention of stopping. Their gradually formed limbs were tightly clinging to the ground and climbing up. As long as these Variants were given time, their speed would quickly surpass that of humans.
Wen Yishu completely ignored her words. Could she not distinguish between danger and death?
The two of them had only brought a total of six fuel bombs. They had used three when they were burning the fish people just now. With seven more below, it was not enough no matter how you looked at it.
“Are we only going to live for this long? Are we not going to live after we go up?”
She snatched the third packet of explosives. This passage below was really long. The people above ran up the stairs, not daring to take a single wrong step.
They also couldn’t care less about Ji Shuyi, who was with them.
The long passage was like a fish trap. Only this time, the objects being devoured were humans. We were the fish, and the fish were the butchers.
When they were halfway through, the fuse of the first sticky explosive also reached its end.
Wen Yishu felt the end of the fuse in her hand shorten. She pulled hard, and the heat wave behind her came mixed with the fishy smell in an instant.
The people above quickened their pace, scrambling to run out of the passage.
The fusion of blood and fire produced a light ignited by life, instantly illuminating the path in front of her. Wen Yishu’s steps were fast. When the fish people reached the middle, she pulled the second fuse.
She felt like the blast wave was almost going to knock her over. Her chest was also stuffy, and the smell of gunpowder in the air was very strong.
Wen Yishu held her breath and pulled the third one. The exit was within reach. Everything in front of her seemed to slow down as if in a time-lapse.
The stones above seemed to be unable to withstand the intensity of such an explosion. A large piece fell down and grazed Wen Yishu’s shoulder.
The people outside were shouting at her from the entrance. She couldn’t hear anything anymore. Her ears were ringing badly from the explosion so close to her.
The fish people behind her rushed up like crazy. Wen Yishu turned her head and kicked.
Ling Shuang almost screamed until her voice broke: “Xiao Wen, hurry up!”
Wen Yishu saw the door that had been blasted down. She had run too fast and found that it was too late when she tried to go up. She slipped, her hand holding on to the stairs above. It looked like her entire body was going to slide down.
Her dust-covered hand, at this moment, grabbed the jacket that Bai Mi handed over.
Half of the team leader’s body was almost in the passage. The muscles in her waist were tense, and she exerted her strength to pull Wen Yishu up.
The sound of the fabric tearing from being unable to bear the weight made her heart pound wildly. Wen Yishu was pulled up like a fish out of water.
The entire passage was sealed off at this moment. A few seconds later, the fish people below would have climbed up.
There was a large amount of rubble at the entrance in front of them, no longer the clean state it was in before.
Everyone sat on the ground with lingering fear, panting heavily. This life-and-death ordeal cast a shadow over the hearts of the two naive young girls.
Wen Yishu rubbed her ears and tried to chew a few times with her mouth to relieve the ringing in her ears and the pain in her head.
She patted Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang on the shoulders.
The two of them, after being in an extremely tense environment, finally relaxed and couldn’t help but cry.
Tear marks left two streaks of water on their dusty faces. Ling Shuang wiped her face haphazardly and looked like a calico cat.
Wen Yishu couldn’t help but laugh. Her ears also started to be able to hear a little more clearly.
But it was still unclear, as if there was a thin film over them. She spoke to Bai Mi: “Team leader, thank you.”
When a person can’t hear, their voice will inevitably be a little loud, but at least her words were clear.
Bai Mi’s face showed no expression: “I hope you can listen to me next time. The calculations of artificial intelligence are not wrong.”
Wen Yishu knew she was talking about what just happened. The smile on her face also faded.
“If they had really come up, would your words have been guaranteed?”
Bai Mi, who was packing her backpack, paused. All of her things had been scattered on the ground when she was pulling Wen Yishu up. At this moment, her hand holding the explosives packet tightened a little.
Wen Yishu saw a very standard squatting and standing posture on her. She stood straight, and her indifferent eyes seemed to carry an emotion that they didn’t have before: “That’s a different algorithm. You’re gambling with your life. Life is a one-time thing. It’s not like data that can be re-created after a file is deleted. You’re a human, not an artificial intelligence.”
“A person only has possibilities when they are alive. Once they’re dead, there’s nothing left.”
This was the first time they had heard the team leader say such a long sentence. Everyone couldn’t help but look up at her.
Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang even stopped crying, covering their still-sobbing mouths and looking at Bai Mi.
Even though the expression on her face was still cold, Wen Yishu smiled. She leaned against the wall and stood up. Her slightly thin body radiated infinite vitality at this moment: “Of course I wouldn’t gamble with my life. Why would you think that?”
Bai Mi looked her straight in the eyes: “It was fine even if they came up, but you insisted on blasting the passage to let more people live. How many of those people you saved could do what you did?”
Wen Yishu didn’t avoid her gaze: “I just wanted us to be a little safer. I didn’t think so much. I know you’re worried about me, and I thank you, team leader. But I’m fine, aren’t I?”
The eyes under the holographic goggles sized her up. Wen Yishu felt that she was in good condition. After only a short rest, she had completely recovered. She even felt better than she was at her peak at the beginning.
“Really, Xiao Wen?” Huo Xiaoguan looked at her unusually excited state and poked her arm suspiciously.
Wen Yishu turned her head and smiled brightly: “Of course. I feel like I can run 800 meters now without a problem!”
Huo Xiaoguan had just given her a thumbs-up when she saw two streams of blood quickly dripping from Wen Yishu’s nose. She fell down uncontrollably, her face even holding the smile she hadn’t had time to put away.
The three of them caught her at almost the same time. Her hot body temperature instantly penetrated their thin jackets.
Huo Xiaoguan’s trembling voice even had a hint of a sob, a hundred times more desperate than when she was crying just now: “Is she running a fever? What do we do? What do we do?”
She subconsciously turned her head to look in You Ning’s direction. She was Wen Yishu’s friend. Why had she been so quiet until now?
It wasn’t until she turned her head that she realized You Ning had disappeared at some point. Ji Shuyi had also disappeared with her.
