Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 16
Chapter 16
The endless darkness enveloped everyone, leaving only the small flashlight beams in front of them.
Huo Xiaoguan asked nervously: “What do we do now? Is the door above us locked?”
Bai Mi: “It’s fine. I have some sticky explosives.”
She pulled out a small packet of explosives from her backpack, with a white fuse wrapped around it.
It was a type of sticky explosive commonly used for small indoor demolitions. Everyone was stunned, and even Wen Yishu was speechless.
How did she have everything? How did she even prepare explosives?
But on second thought, as long as she could get the raw materials, this thing wasn’t difficult to make.
It shouldn’t be a difficult task for a survivalist like her to make explosives to play with.
Seeing that everyone hadn’t recovered, Wen Yishu quickly spoke up to explain for Bai Mi: “It’s the team leader’s hobby. It’s fine. She has a lot of this stuff.”
However, the explanation didn’t do much. The three of them looked at the two of them with complicated expressions.
Bai Mi’s expression was clear. She seemed to think that none of this was strange.
Fortunately, since they could get along, none of them were meddlesome people. After hearing this, they continued to look at the metal door in front of them.
The flashlight beam shone on it, and the scattered light from the metal door illuminated the area in front of them a little.
Wen Yishu could vaguely see her face behind the strong light spots.
The mucus seeping from the bottom of the door left a shadow on the ground. The fishy smell came from this trail of water.
She slowly turned the doorknob. Everyone’s guard was at its peak. They were tense and did not dare to relax for a moment.
Inside the door was a wide research lab. Unlike a normal lab, there weren’t as many machines and equipment inside.
She didn’t know if the metal had a shielding function. Aix’s voice sounded abruptly the moment the metal door opened: “Warning!”
Wen Yishu raised her hand to turn it off. Looking at the scene in front of her, she knew what was inside without having to listen.
The center of the second level was a large open space. In the circular room, there were several two-meter-high water-filled capsules standing against the wall.
A few unclear things floated in the green water. The two liquid capsules closest to the door were flattened from being hit. Inside were Wang Li and Ji Shuyi. The two of them seemed to have fainted.
Wen Yishu was a little surprised. The group scrambled to get the two of them out.
The lights on their quantum computers were still flashing, but they were unconscious. It was no wonder that no one could contact them. It turned out they had fallen in the basement.
Other than the green water in the capsule, there was nothing else stuck to their bodies.
There were no external injuries. Judging by the flattened capsules, the unconsciousness was likely caused by the impact.
Wang Li’s forehead was still red with a bruise. Ji Shuyi’s face also had a big bump.
The group started to try to wake the two of them up. Some pinched their philtrum, and others pinched wherever it hurt.
Ling Shuang even rolled up her sleeves, ready to slap them awake.
Just as she was eagerly choosing who to slap, Wen Yishu stopped her: “Don’t use this as an excuse for revenge.”
She then retracted her hand and gave an embarrassed smile.
After a long time of trying, the two of them slowly woke up. When they saw the group, Wang Li was stunned.
She immediately sat up from the ground: “Why are you here?”
Her tone was not good. Combined with her serious and wary expression, it was very different from her usual amiable demeanor.
You Ning was from another department and was not very familiar with this minister. She said bluntly: “We saved you. Even if you don’t say thank you, you shouldn’t have this attitude, right? I also want to ask you why there’s a basement under the apartment.”
She spoke bluntly, almost tearing up the facade.
Ji Shuyi put her arm around her shoulder and got up with great effort. Wang Li then seemed to wake up from a dream. She lowered her eyes and returned to her usual smiling and friendly demeanor.
“I’m sorry. I was too anxious just now. Please don’t take offense. It’s just that this is not a place you should be. It’s very dangerous here.”
After the two of them regained a little strength, they supported each other and stood up.
Her words were a little weak, as if she was clumsily trying to justify herself.
Ji Shuyi pursed her lips, her eyes fixed on the group in front of her.
The two of them clearly knew something. The corner of Wen Yishu’s eye caught a glimpse of a limb occasionally hitting the wall in the capsule.
Even though the things inside were in the green water, it was not difficult to see their general shape.
She vaguely saw a fish tail swinging agilely. Its scales flashed with a cold silver light, brushing past her eyes.
She was alert. She first turned off the flashlights of the two people next to her.
The place where they were standing was plunged into darkness.
She then raised You Ning’s flashlight-holding arm, which was holding a flashlight, silently.
She tapped her arm, and the other person understood and brightened the flashlight beam.
It shone on the faces of the two people in front of them. The long period of darkness made them squint and block the light with their hands when they were suddenly exposed to strong light.
Taking advantage of their blurry vision, Wen Yishu quickly pulled Bai Mi and pointed at the door behind her: “Explosives.”
Her voice was very soft. It could only be heard when she was close to her ear. Bai Mi nodded, understanding.
The night vision function of her helmet allowed her to walk in the dark without any worry.
You Ning: “If it’s really that dangerous, why are you two still here?”
The two of them looked a little awkward. Wang Li sighed and explained resignedly: “We didn’t discover this place much earlier than you. You should also know that not all researchers can know about Rhine’s second-level or higher research, right?”
As the Federation’s top technology company, Rhine Tech had very clear levels of confidentiality for its research projects.
For Rhine, which had biopharmaceutical and mechanical energy research running in parallel, not all researchers could access the top-level projects.
People like Wen Yishu, who had just joined, had no chance of getting involved in second-level research projects.
Unless she made a significant contribution to the research, she could enter the next higher-level project.
Otherwise, she could only stay in the first-level projects for three to five years.
She frowned and asked, looking at the towering capsules in front of her: “Then these can’t be research subjects for second-level projects, right? These are all fish.”
She revealed what was in the capsules, and the two people’s faces became even uglier.
“This should be the research project of the regeneration team. DHA in fish has always been a research direction in pharmaceuticals. As for so many new species here, we just discovered them.”
Who knew what Rhine was thinking? The employee dorms had such experimental samples below them.
The special nature of these fish turned into a sharp knife piercing everyone after the mutation came. She didn’t know what the senior researchers did to them to cause such a mutation.
Seeing the genuine expressions on their faces, You Ning believed them by seven or eight parts. They had no need to lie about this.
Her hand slowly moved down a little so that the light would not shine directly on their eyes.
As soon as she moved, Wen Yishu instantly raised her arm again.
“Is that so? Then how do you explain the fish people upstairs?”
Wang Li was startled. She looked down at the capsule on the ground and quickly asked: “How long have we been here?”
“One night.”
She went limp and almost fell to the ground: “Oh no. We came down here yesterday and saw these samples. We were going to ask our superiors for instructions, but these two capsules suddenly opened. The things inside came out and started attacking us.”
The more she spoke, the quieter her voice became. Ji Shuyi, with a pale face, continued: “I pulled the minister in. I didn’t expect those two monsters to knock us out.”
This was the scene they saw when they first came in. The two capsules were severely damaged. She didn’t know why the fish people who came out didn’t continue to attack them.
Wang Li seemed to know that her defense was weak. She silently collapsed on the ground and said nothing more.
Wen Yishu ignored them and went forward to check the capsules.
The things inside became a little restless because of her approach. She could see the bodies of a few fish hitting the walls, and their restless tail fins swinging.
Five of the twelve capsules were empty. She had killed three, kicked one away, so there was still one outside.
She remembered the person and the voice from above just now. It must be the fifth one.
She turned around and raised the flamethrower: “All the Variants here must be destroyed. Let’s get out of here.”
When Wang Li heard this, she scrambled up from the ground and shouted excitedly: “No! These samples have research value! The situation has already become like this. It’s hard for Variants to be captured alive outside. We can’t destroy them. We have to hide them and wait for instructions from above.”
When Ling Shuang saw this, she also shouted excitedly: “Leave what, leave what? Do you know that those monsters almost killed me? Which is more important, human lives or research? Minister, have you gone crazy!”
“No, I said no! I’m the minister! Besides, with the capsules, these Variants are all safe.” She excitedly grabbed Wen Yishu’s arm, her expression a little crazy, trying to make her listen to her words.
Wen Yishu shook off her grabbing arm: “You don’t get a say today. If they were really safe, you wouldn’t be lying in them.”
They had already wasted at least a few minutes down here. The stone in Wen Yishu’s heart only fell when she saw Bai Mi come down and nod.
All the fish people here must die to barely ensure their safety.
She didn’t give Wang Li time to choose. At the moment Bai Mi closed the door, a muffled explosion was heard from outside the metal door. The fish people in the capsules began to riot frantically.
The black fish tails frantically swung against the capsules. The green water inside sloshed and moved. Wen Yishu clearly saw the fish person’s upward-facing mouth biting through the glass with its sharp teeth. A large stream of green water sprayed out from the broken opening, rushing toward her feet.
Someone shouted “Run,” and she was grabbed by two hands at the same time, running forward without her feet touching the ground.
Wang Li, who had just been squatting on the ground and refusing to move, was now wrestling with Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang, firmly blocking the exit.
Wen Yishu’s ankles, which were still on the bottom, instantly felt cold. The smart voice prompts that had been turned off started ringing in her ears like a rapid drumbeat: “Warning! Danger approaching! The device is about to explode. To gain escape time, please discard this device in three seconds.”
“Three!”
“Two!”
“One!”
