Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 11
Chapter 11
The man on the top bunk breathed a sigh of relief, snorted, and turned over, muttering to himself that he had come back after all.
He had been overthinking it. It was so dangerous outside now. This person was just throwing a tantrum and didn’t dare to actually go out.
It was the apocalypse. No one would tolerate him. If he couldn’t get used to it, he would just have to endure it.
But he didn’t end up making any sarcastic remarks. He had been through a lot that day, and he had let out his emotions during the argument. His eyelids were very heavy, and he fell asleep in a short while.
The monster in the shape of Tang Han on the bottom bunk was drooling continuously.
Its dead, fish-like eyes were staring intently at the top bunk. In just a little while, the snoring of the man on the top bunk was heard in the room.
Wen Yishu’s sleep was not very peaceful. She always felt hot and cold.
When she was startled awake from her dream, the sky outside was still gray. Only a sliver of light came in through the window where the curtains were not drawn.
It was a cloudy day. Wen Yishu got up and took her temperature. It was a normal 37°C. Her throat was a little dry, but other than that, she had no other discomfort.
The urge to eat meat from yesterday was also gone. Her hand, which had been beaten by the Variant, miraculously had no discomfort.
A large bruise on her arm was still proof that everything she had experienced yesterday was real.
The trees outside had not grown anymore and were the same as yesterday.
The area below had almost turned into a green ocean of trees. With the blowing of the wind, many branches and leaves swayed gently, shaking off the water droplets on the leaves.
Wen Yishu felt that if she opened the window at this moment, the air outside would be very fresh.
She first messaged You Ning to let her know she was safe. After grabbing a piece of toast, she started to quickly check her messages.
She clicked on the video at the top, and a familiar face appeared in her view.
The news anchor’s consistently calm voice sounded: “This station is broadcasting an emergency notice. Today, there have been large-scale plant and animal mutations in various parts of the Federation. All residents are requested to stay indoors and not go out!”
Below were some things she had already learned about. A live broadcast of a helicopter aerial rescue was captured.
The city center where the head of state was located was covered in a sea of green. The tall buildings in the city were almost all pierced by plants. Giant flamethrowers in the air spat out fire.
The plants below were first scorched in large areas, and then countless vines and branches fought back crazily.
They pulled the helicopter that was hovering in the air down. Since the live broadcast was from a first-person perspective, the scene was too terrifying. Wen Yishu, who had a strong sense of immersion, broke out in a cold sweat.
After the dazzling flames, the live broadcast ended there.
All that was left was the news anchor’s dazed expression in the bottom right corner. This video clip was widely circulated and was almost at the top of the feed.
The Federation admitted this morning that all public facilities were paralyzed and could no longer guarantee the safety of all residents.
In small places, even communication was cut off. The number of disconnected locations on the map was increasing.
However, the government was still organizing rescue personnel. They would save as many as they could.
Wen Yishu sighed. She had thought this day would come soon, but she hadn’t expected the government to concede so quickly.
However, although the discussions below were mostly negative, most people understood. It wasn’t that they weren’t going to rescue them. They were just honestly admitting the intensity of this disaster.
The message at the top was an update on the types of Variants, but there wasn’t much progress. The government was also in the observation phase now. People like her who had faced and killed a Variant were in the minority.
The number of times a Variant appeared seemed to be rare. Many people who had discovered anomalies were also disconnected, and the latest progress could not be seen at all.
Wen Yishu looked at the comments below. A bad thought suddenly appeared in her mind. If the collapse of order was only a matter of time, how long could the people below last?
She looked at You Ning’s chat box and found that she still hadn’t replied to her message.
She was a disciplined person. It was already nine o’clock, and she still hadn’t seen her message.
Wen Yishu had a vague bad feeling. She quickly sent a few messages to her, all of which sank like a stone in the sea.
Wen Yishu stood up from her chair in a flash. She put on her jacket while contacting Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang.
These two had returned to their rooms and slept soundly all day yesterday. In the morning, they were woken up by Wen Yishu’s messages. They saw that they had slept for more than ten hours. Fortunately, they were in good health and didn’t have a fever.
Wen Yishu’s slender fingertips quickly slid across the screen, trying to contact Minister Wang.
She didn’t know if the communication below was bad or something else, but no one replied to her messages.
She almost ran downstairs and happened to bump into Bai Mi, who was sitting in the living room getting ready to eat.
Seeing Wen Yishu come down anxiously, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
Wen Yishu didn’t have time to look at her. She quickly packed her things and said: “My friend is downstairs. She seems to have lost contact. I need to go down and check on her.”
She regretted not calling You Ning upstairs yesterday. At least that way, the two of them could have looked out for each other, and she wouldn’t be unable to contact her now.
Bai Mi looked up at her and asked, “In the underground shelter?”
Wen Yishu was already dressed. She looked at the flamethrower in the corner and said: “Yeah. I don’t know why I can’t contact Minister Wang either. Team Leader, can I borrow your flamethrower?”
She felt her request was a bit bad, but it was indeed safer with a flamethrower. Although the team leader had already given her the short dagger, an extra layer of protection was good.
“I’ll go with you,” Bai Mi said. She walked into the study and then took out a set of pure titanium gear.
A tactical helmet and a vest with a gun holster. Wen Yishu was at a loss for a moment and said, “This isn’t appropriate. I already bothered you so much yesterday, Team Leader. I can go by myself.”
This set of gear seemed to be military-grade. The Federation’s Eagle Eye symbol on it was very eye-catching. The black bulletproof and stab-proof vest looked very sturdy.
She had only seen it on SWAT officers. When the Rhine’s leading scientists came to give work guidance on project technology docking, a team of military police wore this.
Seeing her dazed look, Bai Mi didn’t say anything else. She just directly put the helmet on her head.
The black metal helmet cleverly fit her face. When she lowered the night vision goggles, Wen Yishu saw rows of data analysis appear at the focal point of her vision.
Aix’s extremely gentle voice came from inside her ear: “Hello, Researcher. It’s a pleasure to serve you.”
The Aix artificial intelligence was used a lot in the lab. This was the first time Wen Yishu had heard her voice outside of Rhine.
It was not like the cold text communication on her quantum computer.
“Brain-computer connection has been established. Danger identification function has been activated.”
Wen Yishu was speechless with surprise. She didn’t expect Bai Mi to have this kind of thing.
Without waiting for her to ask, Bai Mi handed her the bulletproof vest: “You’ll have to go out later anyway. I also want to see what the situation is like down there. Don’t overthink it. Let’s go.”
Wen Yishu shut up and quickly thought of a countermeasure. It was impossible for someone to help her for no reason. She was not an ungrateful person. She had a lot of food and could give half of it to Bai Mi to thank her for the gear.
The two of them didn’t say anything more and carefully left the room.
The aloe, which was mostly burned yesterday, was drooping lifelessly, leaning against the corner.
But the newly grown green leaves also told people that it wasn’t completely dead; it just didn’t have the strength to attack anymore.
When they entered the door last night, the liquid in the flamethrower burned out in an instant. Today, they deliberately brought a few more. The two of them first moved the aloe away and then went downstairs.
The elevator had completely failed. The two of them met Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang, who were also coming out.
They also wanted to go downstairs to check. Wen Yishu asked strangely: “Where’s the rescuer from yesterday?”
Huo Xiaoguan’s eyebrows furrowed: “She said she wasn’t feeling well, so she won’t be coming out for now.”
Wen Yishu’s heart instantly sank: “Did she have a fever?”
Ling Shuang shook her head: “No. She might have been too tired yesterday and didn’t sleep well last night. She’s still sleeping.”
Wen Yishu nodded and didn’t ask any more questions.
The two of them were curious about Bai Mi’s gear and asked a few questions. After they went back and got fully armed, they went downstairs.
It was pitch black downstairs, just like yesterday. Other than the few motion-sensor lights in the corridor, there was no other light to be seen.
The elevator was completely blocked. The four of them had to take the fire escape.
The door here wasn’t locked with a password. It was blocked with something.
There was a person guarding the door. The light yellow fire blanket was pulled open, revealing the wide barrier behind it. There was no one behind the door. She didn’t know where they went.
Just as Wen Yishu was feeling strange, Ling Shuang just walked in brazenly: “Why is there no one here?”
The corridor in the underground shelter was not narrow. It was empty inside, and there was no one.
Huo Xiaoguan: “It feels like something happened. Everyone, be careful.”
The group walked through the rooms in the corridor. All the doors here were tightly shut. The warm yellow light from the central lounge spilled into the corridor next to it.
The four of them stood at one end of the corridor, walking cautiously. When they turned a corner, they saw a shocking sight inside.
Ling Shuang couldn’t help but let out a quiet gasp and quickly covered her mouth.
They saw that the door to the central lounge with floor-to-ceiling glass walls was wide open. The originally clean and tidy sofa and floor were covered in fresh blood.
The blood on the glass was like jam on a wall, thickly dripping down. Inside were severed limbs, fresh internal organs, and dense bloody footprints at the entrance.
It was a real-life crime scene. This sight was more stimulating than any movie or TV show Wen Yishu had ever seen.
Even with her previous experience of watching bloody videos on the live feed, her stomach churned. She covered her mouth and closed her eyes, almost unable to hold back from throwing up.
The other two couldn’t hold back and vomited out their dinner from yesterday.
The smell of blood slowly wafted over. She heard a squishing sound as if something was slowly walking in the muddy blood and flesh.
Along with Ling Shuang’s scream, Wen Yishu hadn’t even opened her eyes yet when Bai Mi pulled her and started running.
