Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Wen Yishu was startled by her strange thought. She swallowed, feeling the lingering greasy taste of the luncheon meat in her mouth.
She didn’t know if it was because her physical energy was being consumed too quickly, but she was a little addicted to this greasy feeling. After scooping the rest of the luncheon meat into her mouth, she looked at the luncheon meat in the pan and tried hard not to notice Bai Mi’s neck.
She must have been crazy to have a thought about cannibalism. Why would she feel that raw meat was attractive to her?
Wen Yishu didn’t notice her own pale face. She sat on the side, letting go of her energy.
Bai Mi not only made luncheon meat but also cooked spaghetti. Wen Yishu had a lot of semi-finished vegetable bags in the refrigerator, and she took some out and made them.
After the two of them finished their simple meal, they went back to their rooms to rest.
Wen Yishu lay on the bed. Even though she had just eaten, she still felt a pang of hunger in her stomach. She opened her private messages to pass the difficult time.
She then realized that her friend You Ning had sent her many messages, which were covered by other messages, so she hadn’t seen them.
You Ning was her college classmate. The two of them took turns winning first and second place in scholarships every year when they were at Hai University.
Wen Yishu’s family situation wasn’t good. Her parents died early, and she didn’t have many relatives. For so many years, she was all alone. You Ning was completely different from her, with a happy family and a prosperous life.
However, the two of them had similar interests and personalities, and they naturally became good friends without being affected by other external factors.
After graduation, they even joined the same company. However, due to their different majors, they didn’t become colleagues.
During their break these two days, the two of them just exchanged greetings and agreed to get together in a couple of days and focus on their own things first.
So they never saw each other until this disaster broke out. In this one day, Wen Yishu had experienced too many things. Except for the people who were closely related to her, she had temporarily overlooked her friend’s message. She now sent her a message to let her know she was safe.
You Ning: Yishu, the minister told me she saw you upstairs. Are you okay? Do you want to come down and be with me? I’m so worried about you. Please reply when you get this message.
Wen Yishu: I’m fine. Are you okay? How are your aunt and uncle?
You Ning: My parents are fine. They’re just worried about you. It’s good that you’re okay. Remember to reply to me in time. If you’re short on food, let me know, and I’ll send it up to you. Although there are more people in the basement, it’s pretty safe.
Wen Yishu breathed a sigh of relief. She was relieved that You Ning was okay.
You Ning: My parents said that Rong City has sent out a Federation sea rescue to pick up the high-level officials from Rhine here. They’ve saved two spots for me. Let’s go back on the boat together then. You can stay at my house. I’m not comfortable with you staying here alone.
You Ning’s family had a high-level Federation background. They sent out a rescue as soon as they received the message that they were trapped. She was very touched that her good friend was still thinking of her at this time.
Wen Yishu quickly typed a thank-you message with her tired eyes. After they chatted for a while, You Ning told her to go to sleep quickly.
The intelligent butler in the room and the Aix-connected system were enough to watch over them. She no longer thought about anything else and fell into a deep sleep on the bed.
On this rainy night, not everyone was as comfortable as Wen Yishu.
Although the underground shelter was big, the conditions were far worse than the beautifully decorated apartments above.
After all, this was just a simple temporary residence. Two people to a room, crowded on bunk beds. The 20-square-meter small room was not spacious.
Sometimes, if there was a lot of noise next door, you could hear it clearly in the room, not to mention the people sleeping in the same space.
Tang Han had been listening to the sound of the person on the top bunk tossing and turning for two hours. He finally couldn’t take it anymore: “Can you stop moving? You’re so noisy that I can’t sleep.”
The young man on the top bunk was not a pushover. He immediately retorted: “I’m moving my body; you sleep yours. What’s it to you? I’m not moving you.”
Tang Han was a team leader. Normally, besides research, he barely communicated with people and had never been angry at anyone. He couldn’t stand the other person’s attitude.
He sat up from the bed: “You’re the one with the problem, so why can’t I say anything? If you have fleas, go take a shower. Don’t lie on the bed scratching yourself!”
The man on the top bunk didn’t give in to him. He was already annoyed, and when he heard the other person’s words, he spoke even more unpleasantly: “If you can’t stand it, get out. No one’s stopping you. This room isn’t just yours. It’s only midnight. What’s wrong with me moving? It’s the end of the world. Who’s going to give in to you? If you keep making noise, I’ll hit you!”
His tone was vicious, which really scared Tang Han. He glared at the bed board on the top bunk, looking fierce on the outside but cowardly on the inside. After all, talking was one thing, but if it came to a real fight, a weakling like him, who hadn’t exercised for years, might be knocked down with one punch.
Order had already started to break down at the beginning. When he first came down, he brought a bag of water and food. Although the minister still looked as friendly as usual.
But the people around him didn’t know what was wrong. They had completely lost their usual politeness and distance. When they saw his things, they just snatched them and ate them without asking.
He was stared at by three or five people, and he was quite indignant but didn’t dare to speak.
Tang Han clenched his fists angrily. This was only the first day of the world changing. Such a life would probably last for a long time. Quality was difficult to maintain even in a big company like Rhine.
You either fight back and make everyone afraid of you, or you swallow your anger and take a step back to make a big deal into a small one.
Apparently, a person like him belonged to the latter.
The person on top finally stopped for a while after his argument, but it wasn’t long before he went back to his old ways.
The rustling sound of clothes rubbing together tortured Tang Han’s fragile nerves to the point of collapse.
He had a nervous breakdown and couldn’t sleep well even with earplugs in. He looked at the time. An hour had passed. It was now early in the morning.
But this time, he didn’t dare to say anything anymore. If the person on the top bunk couldn’t sleep, no one else could sleep carefree.
He got up and put the thin blanket on his body. He took a deep breath, wanting to go out for a walk.
He wanted to ask Minister Wang if he could change his room. Only Minister Wang had the room cards for all the rooms here. His private messages had sunk like a stone in the sea.
He couldn’t stand to be with a person like the one on the top bunk for one more night. He was a light sleeper to begin with. If he didn’t sleep for one night, his spirit would definitely collapse.
The temperature in the corridor was a few degrees colder than in the room. He shivered the moment he opened the door. Listening to the rustling sound on the top bunk, he sighed helplessly and walked out.
The rooms in the shelter were interconnected. The corridor was not narrow. Because there was no clutter, the entire corridor looked very empty.
Tang Han wrapped the blanket tightly around his body and started to look for Minister Wang’s room one by one.
He rubbed his hands, feeling that the air he exhaled was turning into white mist.
The lights in the corridor kept turning on as he got closer.
The silver room number plates around him were all lit up in a ghostly white.
Tang Han felt his body trembling a little. He walked forward, shivering.
He wanted to find Minister Wang’s room quickly so she could change his roommate for him.
The lights in the corridor lit up one after another. The bone-chilling cold almost froze his hands that were holding the blanket.
Tang Han relied on his vague memory and instinct to look for the minister’s room.
Finally, after he turned a corner, he saw a person standing at the end of a room.
The woman was wearing a black jacket and gray cargo pants, which looked a bit like what the minister was wearing during the day.
Tang Han stopped strangely. He saw the person in front of him holding a flashlight and shining it on the room number.
Could it be that the minister was patrolling at night? Then why didn’t she reply to his message?
He didn’t hear the Aix broadcast message being replied to in his headphones. Tang Han walked forward with some confusion, wanting to ask the minister if she could change his room.
Tang Han sniffed and patted the woman on the shoulder: “Minister, why are you…”
He didn’t finish his sentence. His tongue was tied from the horrifying sight in front of him. He could only make gurgling sounds from his throat.
The person in front of him turned her head. Her face was flat, with protruding facial features. Every organ seemed to be magnified by a magnifying glass, almost occupying her entire face.
Her nose was high, and her lips were thick like sausages. A fleshy lure-like thing, similar to those of deep-sea fish, extended from her forehead.
The sharp bead at the end was emitting a bright light, which was the source of the flashlight.
He then realized that the jacket on this monster’s body had turned into pieces of fish scales with a foul smell at some point. Her entire body was covered with mucus and a putrid smell.
In a flash, the person in front of him had become a complete monster. Even the skin that was still human just a moment ago had completely disappeared. Only the thick fish mouth was opening and closing as if it were out of oxygen. After luring people in, it had become a complete deep-sea monster fish.
It was the first time Tang Han had seen such a Variant. He was scared out of his wits and could barely move his legs.
The monster in front of him bared her teeth and smiled at him. The next second, his hand appeared inside the fish’s mouth.
The sound of his cartilage being crunched in her mouth made a horrifying sound. But Tang Han couldn’t feel the pain of losing his forearm at all.
It seemed that there was a trace of anesthetic in her mouth. Blood dripped into the fish’s mouth.
He didn’t know if it was a pre-death hallucination, but Tang Han seemed to hear a voice exactly like his own coming from the horrible Variant’s mouth: “Minister, why are you here?”
Immediately, the fish mouth, carrying a foul wind, took his consciousness into an endless darkness.
Tang Han’s headless body went limp and was about to fall. The fish-like Variant pulled his head back and stuffed his entire body into its mouth.
Inside the room, the man on the top bunk was still thinking about whether to go out and look for someone when the doorknob turned. He looked up slightly and saw a man with a blanket on his shoulders walk in.
