- Chapter 5 - The Married Beta is Cornered – "Is someone with you?"
It was eleven o’clock the next morning when Bai Yu arrived at Yunjing University. He had timed it perfectly; his former advisor, Teacher Ling, was in the office.
Bai Yu had taken a leave of absence during the first semester of sophomore year. To resume his studies, he would have to start from the second semester of sophomore year, delaying his graduation by one year.
After filling out and submitting the paperwork, Teacher Ling spun his swivel chair to face Bai Yu and looked up at him. “The basic music theory for the composition major is very important. You should consolidate your old fundamentals over the next few months. I will inform Teacher Hou, who teaches the next composition class, about your situation.”
“Okay, thank you, Teacher Ling.”
Bai Yu was the student who skipped the most classes in the cohort. He was always absent, even skipping specialized courses, and the teachers didn’t know what he was secretly busy with.
Although he did have talent in music composition, his frequent absences not only caused dissatisfaction among his classmates but also affected his final semester credits. Teacher Ling had sought out Bai Yu several times regarding this matter.
It wasn’t until the start of the second semester of sophomore year was approaching that Bai Yu called Teacher Ling to inquire about the leave of absence procedures. Only then did Teacher Ling learn that a family member was seriously ill, and Bai Yu could no longer continue his studies.
Teacher Ling asked, “Is your sister better now?”
Bai Yu nodded. “She’s still waiting for a matching donor, but it should be soon.”
“That’s good. Starting next semester, you need to study seriously and not waste the talent you have. There are many people outside who want to get in. For them, this is a highly sought-after opportunity.”
Yunjing University’s School of Music is one of the top three music academies in the country. It boasts top-tier music faculty and equipment, and the admission scores are very high every year.
The students who get in either have a musical talent or come from musical families or wealthy backgrounds, relying on money for intensive training and musical concepts instilled since childhood.
Bai Yu was one of the few who came from an ordinary family to be admitted. He actually liked music very much. “I understand, Teacher Ling.”
Just then, the class bell rang, and students came and went, one hand holding textbooks, the other carrying instrument cases, guitar cases, flutes, or sometimes walking along the main path in performance costumes.
Besides its School of Music being its highlight, Yunjing University’s School of Performing Arts and School of Dance are also very famous, and the campus has a high concentration of handsome men and beautiful women.
Bai Yu messaged his roommate, Lu Chuo, wanting to borrow his professional class notes from the first two semesters of freshman year.
Lu Chuo quickly replied: [I have them. They’re piled up in my dorm cabinet. Class just ended. Wait for me downstairs by the dorm building, and we’ll go together.]
Bai Yu stood at the dorm entrance, holding the braised food he bought at the supermarket, waiting.
Lu Chuo walked over and immediately spotted Bai Yu. The first time he met Bai Yu, he asked him why his nose was so straight and prominent; he was definitely one of the best-looking betas in the whole school.
“Yo, your hair’s gotten long?”
Lu Chuo was an alpha. Bai Yu pressed the scent blocker patch on the back of his neck, which was covered by his long hair, slightly afraid it might fall off. “It’s alright. Are you busy with classes now?”
“Don’t even mention it. This semester, I have three early morning classes every week. It’s torture.”
Bai Yu handed the braised food to Lu Chuo. “I remember you like braised food, so I bought some for you.”
“We’re roommates, no need to be so polite.”
Lu Chuo smiled and took the braised food, immediately grabbing a duck leg to chew on.
“Did a new roommate move in after I left?”
“No, someone wanted to, but we said no. We were hoping you’d come back. Did Teacher Ling tell you to start from sophomore year again?”
“Yes, I wasted a whole year, and I can’t make up that many credits.”
Lu Chuo opened the dorm room door. The male dorm wasn’t very messy, but it wasn’t spotless either, and the air carried a faint smell of spicy snacks.
Bai Yu’s old bed was empty, storing some miscellaneous items.
While opening the cabinet to look for books, Lu Chuo said, “Oh, by the way, someone came looking for you last week.”
Bai Yu clenched his fingers. “Looking for me?”
“Yeah, I asked them why they were looking for you, but they wouldn’t say. Two alphas, with large tattooed sleeves, not like legitimate people.”
Last week was exactly when Bai Yu had encountered Situ Jing. If Situ Jing had sent people to the school to look for him, they wouldn’t be tattooed thugs. So who was it?
Lu Chuo stacked the found books and notes on the desk. “Did you get into trouble with someone?”
Bai Yu pondered. “No. Did they say anything?”
Lu Chuo carefully recalled the scene. “I told them you had already taken a leave of absence and weren’t here. They cursed, ‘F*ck,’ and left.”
“Nothing else?”
“No.”
“I see. I’ll be back in class next semester. If they come looking for me again, I’ll figure out who it is.”
Lu Chuo handed the books to Bai Yu. “Take a look at which ones you need and which ones you don’t.”
Bai Yu selected five books and notebooks to take with him. “I’ll take these. I’ll return them to you when school starts.”
Lu Chuo laughed. “Just use them. No need to return them; they’re just piled up here, and I haven’t looked at them anyway.”
“Then I’ll get going?”
“I’ll walk you out. I need to buy something anyway.”
Bai Yu and Lu Chuo left the school gate together. They caught the bus at the bus stop and headed back to the small neighborhood on the Third Ring Road.
Half an hour later, Bai Yu got off the bus, carrying the books and notes. From a distance, he saw a red sports car parked at the entrance of the complex. Leaning against the car were two heavily made-up women in high heels, followed by several thugs carrying baseball bats.
The security in this area of old, dilapidated buildings wasn’t great, and group fights happened frequently. Bai Yu therefore assumed that someone in the complex had provoked a rich second-generation heir and was being targeted, with people specifically waiting to corner them here.
Bai Yu lowered his head, walking around the group towards the complex gate, carrying his books. Suddenly, a voice from the group rang out, “That’s him!”
At this moment, Bai Yu was the only one walking outside the complex, and no one was coming out from inside. His nerves instantly tensed up.
Bai Yu turned his head and saw the slightly taller woman in a leopard-print bodycon dress by the red sports car pointing at him. “It’s you! Don’t you dare run, you bastard!”
“I don’t know you. What’s wrong?”
Bai Yu felt her voice was a little strange, like a man’s. He thought he hadn’t interacted with this person before.
The woman waddled, walking with an out-turned gait in seven-centimeter stilettos, and ran toward Bai Yu. “You still say you don’t know me! I’m like this all thanks to you!”
Bai Yu noticed from her walking posture that she wasn’t actually a woman, but… “Cui Che?!”
Cui Che ripped off the wig, exposing the gauze on his head, and grabbed Bai Yu’s collar, his eyes wide. “Was it you, kid, who did something?”
The thugs immediately surrounded them, tapping their baseball bats in their hands.
Bai Yu felt inexplicably confused. He pushed Cui Che away. “What are you talking about? I don’t understand at all! I haven’t even settled the score with you for drugging me yet!”
Cui Che tugged at his shifted skirt hem and swore, “Cousin, what kind of lousy skirt is this? My butt’s showing every time I move. F*ck!”
The cousin was still leaning against the sports car, exhaling smoke. “If you’ve got the guts, don’t wear it. See if your mom doesn’t find out you didn’t go to Country G.”
The thugs also found their boss’s new outfit jarring and strange, yet somehow good-looking!
Cui Che kicked a man who was secretly looking at him, and still not satisfied, kicked a second one. Then he walked back to Bai Yu, twirling a military knife in his hand. “Three days after I drugged you, my dad received private photos of me messing around outside. My parents are sending me to the petrochemical plant in the G Country desert. Isn’t that a huge coincidence?”
Bai Yu cautiously watched the knife in Cui Che’s hand. “I didn’t do it.”
Cui Che pressed the back of the knife against Bai Yu’s face. “Are you really sure it wasn’t you?”
“No, I’m just a college student who works part-time outside, living in a run-down complex like this. I even have trouble affording my own living expenses. Where would I get the money to buy your photos?”
Bai Yu was holding his books and notebooks, and suddenly remembered Lu Chuo’s words. “Was it you guys who went looking for me at school?”
“What else? I’m telling you, don’t try to deceive me. I’ve asked everyone around who could possibly be involved.”
“I really didn’t.”
A few alphas came out of the complex, saw the situation, and wisely kept their distance, looking on.
Bai Yu thought that while he was glad Cui Che was unlucky, he didn’t know who was responsible for this, and now Cui Che hadn’t left and had even come looking for him.
If Cui Che didn’t believe him, one swing of the bat from each of these guys would be enough to put him in bed for a month. Where could he run to shake them off?
Cui Che ground his teeth, and the military knife made a cut on Bai Yu’s clothes, exposing a patch of his fair chest skin.
Bai Yu trembled slightly, afraid of Cui Che’s knife, and even more afraid that the marks hadn’t faded and would be seen. Luckily, the knife hadn’t hit the spot where he was bitten.
Cui Che laughed. “Why are you shaking?”
He saw the phone in Bai Yu’s hand. The screen was cracked like a spiderweb, it was a domestic brand from years ago, and his shoes were fifty-yuan street vendor canvas shoes. Cui Che temporarily believed him and a new playful thought arose.
Bai Yu took a step back. “If there’s nothing else, can I go?”
Cui Che put away the knife. “Spend a night with me, and I’ll believe you.”
Bai Yu’s face turned pale: “What?”
The cousin urged from a distance, “Did you find out? Hurry up and leave. I have a banquet to attend tonight.”
Cui Che dragged Bai Yu over. “Drop me off at the Haoting Hotel.”
The cousin slapped Cui Che’s head. “You want to push the envelope? Aren’t you afraid the person behind this will take another picture of you and put it on the trending topics? Listen to your mom and stop, will you?”
Bai Yu was slightly relieved. This cousin had some conscience.
Cui Che leaned close to his cousin’s ear and whispered something. The cousin smiled and patted him. “Even if you’re itching, don’t drag me into it. Take a taxi yourself!”
Bai Yu took advantage of their conversation, let go, and ran.
“Go after him!” Cui Che walked with his out-turned gait, chasing after Bai Yu, and the thugs followed suit.
Bai Yu ran into an alley and bumped into a small electric scooter that was coming out. His books scattered. As he urgently bent down to pick them up, he was caught and pressed against the wall.
Cui Che grabbed Bai Yu’s mouth. “It seems a beta’s stamina is better than an omega’s. The last dose wasn’t enough to knock you out. I’ll have to increase the dose this time.”
Just then, Bai Yu’s phone rang. It had fallen to the ground, displaying an unfamiliar incoming number.
Cui Che picked it up, turned on the speakerphone, and held it to Bai Yu’s mouth.
Bai Yu: “Hello?”
“This is my number. Save it. I might contact you personally in the future. Don’t turn it off at any time.”
“Okay.”
Cui Che mouthed the words: “Who is this?”
Situ Jing had told him not to reveal his name or their relationship, so Bai Yu quickly fabricated an identity. “A bar manager I met through a part-time job. I’m going to his place to sing later.”
On the phone, Situ Jing asked, “Is someone with you?”
“Uh, I ran into an… acquaintance at the complex entrance. We talked for a bit.”
“Who?”
Bai Yu glanced at Cui Che. Cui Che gestured a knife at him. He couldn’t say his name. “A customer who invited me for a drink last time.”
The person on the other end gave a cold snort. “Is he still there?”
Bai Yu’s heart skipped a beat. What did Situ Jing’s words mean? Did he know Cui Che was next to him, and did he know Cui Che was supposed to be sent to Country G by his parents?
Cui Che’s heart also skipped a beat. Who was this person? His tone was so calm and severe, as if he knew something.
Cui Che pressed the hang-up button on Bai Yu’s phone and grabbed his collar. “Who is this person?!”
“Just a bar manager.” Bai Yu stared outside the alley, looking for a chance to escape.
“I don’t believe you! Who did you hook up with, huh?”
Cui Che gnashed his teeth, shaking Bai Yu. “You didn’t have money to buy the photos, but you could find someone to help. With a face like yours, it wouldn’t be hard to find someone willing to buy them. You’re the one who leaked my photos, and you’re colluding with him, aren’t you?!”
“I’m not!”
Just then, a blue sports car sped into the alley, followed by three black SUVs.
The sports car stopped, and a noblewoman-dressed omega got out. Seeing Cui Che, she took off her high heel and threw it at him. “You little wastrel, sneaking back here dressed up as a female omega!”
Cui Che was startled and let go of Bai Yu. Bai Yu dodged the flying red heel.
The bodyguards who got out of the SUVs drove away the thugs and lifted Cui Che by the arms, dragging him into a car.
The cousin approached the noblewoman, pleading for Cui Che. “Aunt, he’s still got a head injury. Let him stay in the country for a while, please?”
“You get away from me too! Hurry up and go see your fiancé. Don’t disgrace the Cui family. That’s all the face the Cui family has left!”
The cousin quickly got in her car and drove away.
