- Chapter 4 - The Married Beta Touches Abs, A Kiss Like a Dragonfly Skimming Water
When Bai Yu emerged from the bathroom, Situ Jing was no longer in the bedroom.
He recalled telling Bai Li he was going out to work yesterday. He was supposed to go to the hospital in the afternoon, but Situ Jing’s people took him away directly, and he wasn’t sure if Bai Li had seen them.
Bai Yu sat on the edge of the bed and called Bai Li.
As soon as the call connected, Bai Li’s surprised cry rang out, “Brother! You upgraded me to a VIP ward and hired a nurse?!”
Situ Jing’s actions were swift; he had already changed Bai Li’s ward before Bai Yu even had a chance to tell her.
Bai Yu could imagine Bai Li’s scrawny frame jumping up from the bed, probably suppressing her urge to ask to avoid disturbing him.
“Yes, I posted about your condition on a charity fundraising platform, and a very kind sponsor found us. We don’t have to worry about medical expenses and matching for the transplant anymore.”
“Really? That’s great! I was wondering why you didn’t come yesterday, and a few men came to the door of the ward looking for you. I was worried you’d gotten into some trouble, but it turned out to be good news. Brother, you don’t have to go to work anymore, right?”
“I still need to. There might be other expenses besides the medical ones, but I can go back to school now and work part-time while studying.”
“Yay! Brother, don’t neglect your studies, and take care of yourself!”
“Your brother knows.” Bai Yu sat on the bed, feeling a bit guilty, “The part-time job I took this time is out of town, so it will take a few days before I can come back. If you need anything, ask the nurse to help you.”
“I know, don’t worry about me.”
Situ Jing changed into a well-tailored black bespoke suit and was having a video conference with executives from the Southern Hemisphere in the living room using his laptop.
Having resolved personal matters, there was a heap of company business to deal with.
He needed to conduct the final interview for the CFO candidate, and an overseas acquisition project was being prepared in full swing.
As Situ Jing listened to the CFO candidate presenting their work experience, he glanced at the open bedroom door, searching for Bai Yu.
The CFO candidate noticed the CEO looking away from the camera, and their heart jumped into their throat, their voice wavering.
After finishing the call with Bai Li, Bai Yu was nestled on the small sofa in the bedroom, playing a game.
The milky-coffee colored loungewear delivered by Secretary Zhou was too big; the collar fell open to his chest, and his legs were propped on the sofa, his pink toes wiggling.
After the candidate finished their introduction, Situ Jing, with sharp rhetoric, began to question them through the camera.
After Bai Yu played games for two hours, Situ Jing walked toward the bedroom, pulled off his tie, and blindfolded Bai Yu.
Bai Yu’s vision went black. He only felt Situ Jing scooping him up and tossing him onto the bed, his hand sliding under the loungewear, rubbing his slender, thinly-muscled waist, and parting his legs.
“Ah ha…”
In the morning, Situ Jing went to the bathroom to shower, the water flowing with a whooshing sound.
Bai Yu hadn’t slept all night and was a bit hungry now, so he simply sat up, leaning against the soft headboard, planning to catch up on sleep after breakfast.
Situ Jing came out after showering and met Bai Yu’s bright, direct gaze. He walked to the bed and lifted Bai Yu’s chin, “What are you looking at?”
“Your scar.”
Situ Jing’s sexy, strong muscle lines were beautiful, and even the scar on the left side of his lower abdomen looked unique. It was just a shallow, slanted mark, hard to spot without a careful look.
Situ Jing didn’t explain, “Let’s eat breakfast.”
Bai Yu walked to the table and ate the sandwich, but didn’t drink the milk.
As he was about to get up, Situ Jing asked, “Why aren’t you drinking the milk?”
“I’m lactose intolerant. I tend to get bloated and have diarrhea after drinking milk or other dairy products.”
Situ Jing took a sip of his coffee and looked up at Bai Yu, “Has it been like this since childhood?”
“Yes, I was hospitalized when I was little because of diarrhea from drinking milk.”
“This phenomenon is common among Betas; it’s related to genetic defects and inheritance.”
Wealthy families can use world-class technology to enhance their physical constitution, but ordinary, lower-class Betas don’t have this opportunity. Since the allergy doesn’t affect daily life, many people don’t bother to treat it; they just avoid the allergenic food.
Situ Jing called the hotel’s customer service department and asked them to send up a glass of soy milk for Bai Yu.
Then, Situ Jing picked up his phone and typed a few numbers, “Change your wardrobe. Don’t wear those plastic clothes anymore.”
Bai Yu’s phone notification rang. He opened it and saw a transfer of fifty thousand. Was this more money from Situ Jing, in addition to the eighty thousand allowance?
Should he show some appreciation?
Bai Yu struggled internally for a moment, then leaned across the table and tentatively kissed Situ Jing’s cheek lightly, “Thank you.”
The kiss was inexperienced, like a dragonfly skimming the water, and cool.
Situ Jing’s Adam’s apple bobbed, “You really should wipe the sandwich crumbs from the corner of your mouth before you come close to me again.”
Bai Yu covered his mouth and quickly used a tissue to wipe, “Sorry.”
“Go to the sofa.”
“What for? On the sofa?”
“You.”
“Huh?” Bai Yu took two seconds to process, his earlobes turning red, “…What about the soy milk when it comes up?”
Seven days later, Situ Jing’s rut ended. The glandular area was no longer hot or red, there was no sharp pain, and his body temperature and heartbeat had returned to normal.
Bai Yu was still asleep in bed, his thick eyelashes casting shadows, the curve of his back and his dimples exposed in the morning light.
Situ Jing tightened his tie, opened the door, and left.
Secretary Zhou drove to pick up Situ Jing, “Boss, how long should I extend the room reservation?”
“Two days.”
Situ Jing got into the car and immediately started reviewing the executives’ monthly reports, looking refreshed and invigorated.
Bai Yu woke up in the afternoon and realized Situ Jing was gone. He guessed that the rut must have ended and he left. If he hadn’t left, Bai Yu felt he might have collapsed there.
Secretary Zhou sent a message: [The boss said the room is extended until tomorrow. You can rest for a while longer before leaving.]
Bai Yu: [I need to go to the hospital to see my sister. I’ll leave today.]
Secretary Zhou: [Okay.]
Leaving the hotel, Bai Yu went to a convenience store to buy an inhibitor patch, stuck it on the back of his neck, and then took the subway to the hospital.
He hadn’t seen Bai Li for a week and wondered how her body was holding up and how bad the side effects of chemotherapy were.
Arriving at the hospital’s inpatient building, Bai Yu asked the nurse for the location of the VIP ward and took the elevator up.
The VIP ward was quieter and more spacious than the regular ward. Bai Li was watching a variety show on TV and made a confused sound when she saw Bai Yu, “Huh?”
Bai Yu secretly touched the topmost button of his collar, which was tightly buttoned, concealing the hickeys underneath, “What is it?”
Bai Li looked at Bai Yu’s clothes, “Brother, you finally splurged on new clothes. This brand is quite expensive. One shirt costs ten thousand. Did you earn that much money?”
Bai Yu was wearing clothes sent by Secretary Zhou and hadn’t looked closely at the brand, “The boss who hosted the event gave it to me.”
“Oh, I see. Brother, you’re amazing! You look really handsome in this!”
Bai Yu hadn’t yet fully recovered from the entanglement with Situ Jing over the past few days, but he offered a gentle smile, “I’m treating you to a big meal today. What do you want to eat?”
“How about… something light? Mushroom hot pot.”
“Sure, I was thinking of having that, too.”
After Bai Li changed, Bai Yu accompanied her out of the hospital to a hot pot restaurant for mushroom hot pot.
After lunch, they returned to the hospital, and Bai Li still vomited, but not much.
At this moment, several doctors, whom Bai Yu hadn’t encountered before, came in to see Bai Li.
The Situ family had invested in half of the major hospitals in Yun Jing City, and this hospital was one of them.
Bai Li’s attending physician had been replaced by a senior expert listed on the hospital bulletin board, surnamed Deng, who also served as a professor at the Medical University besides his hospital work.
Dr. Deng came to see Bai Li and informed Bai Yu about the recent treatment plan, which was still mainly chemotherapy, awaiting a bone marrow match. However, regardless of whether a match was successful, Bai Li might need to be scheduled for treatment abroad later.
Bai Yu was clearly startled by the doctor’s words, “Then…”
“Don’t worry, we will inform you of these details as the situation progresses. If treatment abroad is genuinely required, we will arrange everything for you.”
A week ago, Dr. Deng received a notice from the higher-ups to be solely responsible for the patient in this VIP ward. Furthermore, the higher-ups had informed the nurses’ station that the patient in the ***VIP ward required special attention.
The nurses at the station had discussed whether the patient was a relative of the Situ family.
Dr. Deng was professional, but he couldn’t help but feel curious and a touch of pity for this fair-skinned, clean-cut young man.
Leukemia in the middle to late stages was difficult to treat. With the resources of the Situ family to search the national bone marrow bank, there might be hope, but they had to wait.
Bai Yu nodded, “I understand, thank you, Doctor.”
Dr. Deng glanced at the information on the medical record and recalled something, “Are you from Nangang City?”
“Yes, Doctor.”
“Fourteen years ago, a chemical factory in Nangang City illegally discharged toxic sewage containing carcinogens, polluting the surrounding land. This was only exposed five years ago. Since then, quite a few people from Nangang City have come here for leukemia treatment. Are you also among the affected residents?”
“Yes, my mother worked at that chemical factory at the time and was pregnant with my sister.” Bai Yu’s tone was strikingly calm, making it sound as if he was merely discussing things like “The weather is nice today” or “What should we have for lunch.”
Dr. Deng looked at Bai Yu’s slender frame, “I think you also need a full body check-up.”
Bai Yu shook his head, “No need, my body is very healthy.”
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely.” Bai Yu stated with certainty.
“Alright then. If there are any new developments, I will contact you promptly.” Dr. Deng turned and left.
Bai Yu returned to the ward. Bai Li had just tiptoed to the bed and lay down, her slipper spinning in the air before dropping to the floor.
“Eavesdropping? I can tell you what was said.”
Bai Li straightened the blanket and smiled at Bai Yu, but she soon lost her strength, with a cold sweat on her forehead. After a while, she asked, “What did the doctor say?”
“Nothing much, just telling us not to worry and that they will find a matching bone marrow.”
“Mhm. When I get better, I want to explore all the fun places in Yun Jing before going to study!”
