- Chapter 19 - Married Beta’s Red Mark on the Waist. What on earth is he sending this late at night…
The meeting was drawing to a close when Situ Jing pushed the door open and entered. His seat was directly across from Chairman Situ Jian—his father—who hadn’t been to the company in a long time.
Situ Jian was also an S-class Alpha. He had a gentle and peaceful, dove-like appearance, with slight crow’s feet around his eyes, which gave him a melancholic and affectionate look at first glance. He had won a fencing championship in his youth.
As the family heir, Situ Jian’s time at the helm was neither spectacular nor disastrous; he guarded the family business with caution. Situ Jing, however, was his complete opposite in his approach.
For many years, the relationship between father and son had been strained, and neither offered the other a pleasant look when they met this time.
Situ Jing sat down with composure, placing his hand on the table. “Let’s hear the results of your discussion.”
One of the executives present spoke first, “Our suggestion is…”
After the meeting, Situ Jing left first and headed to his own office.
Not long after, his father, suppressing his anger, arrived at Situ Jing’s office, closed the door, and immediately started speaking.
“I haven’t been to the company in ages, and the first thing you do is intentionally show up so late, giving me the cold shoulder?”
Situ Jing sat sideways in his chair and looked up at him. “Please don’t be so emotional in the company.”
“Your staff said you are never late for meetings, but you are two hours late the moment I show up, and the meeting is practically over. If that’s not giving me the cold shoulder, then is it my special treatment? Everyone is gossiping that the Situ father and son are estranged and haven’t been seen together in years—”
“I’ve explained, and the content of this meeting has also been decided, hasn’t it? If you want to put on a show for outsiders, you can notify me anytime, and I’ll have my secretary adjust my schedule.”
His father paced back and forth in the office, looking helpless. “How long are you going to keep this standoff with me?”
“Am I?”
Situ Jing showed no intention of changing his attitude. He held the ladybug ceramic sculpture he had brought back and fiddled with it, only to notice that the ladybug not only had intelligent-looking eyes but was also asymmetrical on the left and right sides and surprisingly had seven tiny legs.
Amidst his anger, his father’s attention was also drawn to the red ladybug sculpture. “That’s quite unique. When did you get interested in things like this?”
“Dr. Jiang said this could help treat my pheromone abnormality.”
Situ Jing’s tone was indifferent. His mind flashed back to two hours ago, when Bai Yu unbuttoned his shirt and belt buckle in the car. He handed the light blue square bag to Bai Yu and asked him to put it on him.
Bai Yu tried several times but couldn’t put it on and looked at him with a flushed face.
So clumsy.
His father was completely unaware of what his son was thinking. He sighed softly. “Find some time to see a psychiatrist as well. I heard you haven’t been for a long time.”
Situ Jing didn’t reply. He rubbed his chin. “I’m very curious, what exactly attracts you to her.”
“Regardless, I have the right to start anew, Jing.”
“I’m not limiting your freedom to start anew, but I just don’t understand what’s so great about that ‘green tea.’ Not only is she not an S-class Omega, and her family is ordinary, but she’s not even pretty; she’s just a very average yoga instructor.”
His father walked up to Situ Jing’s desk. “I forbid you to speak about her like that!”
Situ Jing let out a mocking laugh. “Then you should remind Hui. He says much worse things than I do.”
“Three feet of ice does not form in a single day” (a Chinese idiom meaning reconciliation takes time). His father repeated this phrase internally. When he spoke, his voice softened. “Come over for dinner next Saturday. Hui said he’s finished filming and will be back.”
“Is that ‘green tea’ going to be there too?”
Before his father could answer, Situ Jing knew the answer just from his expression and began to dismiss him. “We’ll see. If there’s nothing else, please move to your office, Chairman. I have my own work to attend to.”
At this moment, his father said, “She resembles your mother.”
“Who did you say she resembles?”
“Your mother.”
The air pressure in the office suddenly dropped. Situ Jing stood up. “You were diagnosed with facial blindness five years ago, and now you’ve completely lost your sight, haven’t you? If you’re sick, go get treated! Go back and look carefully! Don’t talk to me about someone resembling your deceased lover here. If you dare say that thick-browed, sausage-lipped, dark-skinned, eye-stinging ‘green tea’ resembles my mother again, believe it or not, I’ll have you locked in a mental hospital!”
The office door wasn’t closed properly, and their voices leaked out. Secretary Zhou quickly shut the door.
A few minutes later, the office door opened.
Situ Jian walked out with a mix of helplessness, frustration, and grievance, and addressed Secretary Zhou, “Xiao Zhang, make me a cup of Longjing tea.”
Secretary Zhou looked at Assistant Zhang, who was accompanying the Chairman.
Assistant Zhang didn’t hesitate for a second. “Chairman, I’m right here! I’ll make you a cup of tea immediately!”
Bai Yu went home, showered, changed his clothes, and went to the kitchen to rub a little dish soap on the oily spots on his clothes before throwing them into the washing machine.
Back inside, Bai Yu dried his hair with a towel, draped it over his shoulder, and picked up the golden scarab ceramic sculpture on the table to examine it closely.
When the two were choosing which insect to make, the owner offered a catalog. Situ Jing chose the scarab, and Bai Yu pointed out, “That’s a dung beetle, the one that rolls dung balls.”
Situ Jing replied, “Then do you know that in ancient Egyptian legends, it rolls the sun, symbolizing the eternal cycle of life?”
The owner confirmed what Situ Jing said, praised him for his extensive knowledge, and asked with curiosity in his eyes, “Are you a professor at a university, or…?”
Situ Jing said concisely, “No.”
He was merely using his knowledge to crush Bai Yu’s fanciful, lateral thinking.
When kneading the clay strips to make the sculpture, Situ Jing was extremely focused, working while looking at the diagram. He was not only fast and precise in carving, but even the barbs on the digging legs were rendered very realistically; upon close inspection, there were no flaws.
Bai Yu stroked the smooth carapace of the golden scarab with his index finger and gently placed it in the cabinet.
It was raining lightly that night. The wet roads reflected the colorful neon lights.
Bai Yu had his hair pulled up in a half-bun, a lollipop in his mouth, a plain short-sleeved shirt with a small salted fish pattern, blue jeans, and was carrying a clear umbrella and a bag of fruit as he stepped off the bus.
The bus stop was across from the hospital. Bai Yu opened his transparent umbrella and waited for the traffic light. In a trance, he saw a man wearing a black hoodie appear under the shade outside the hospital across the street.
His hand trembled suddenly. When he looked intently in that direction, the figure was gone.
The light turned green. Bai Yu crossed the road, pretending to casually look around. Only when he didn’t find the figure did he relax and walk into the hospital.
Fallen purple orchid flowers covered the ground beneath the inpatient building. Ripples spread in the puddles that had collected in the bicycle parking area, startled by the falling blossoms.
Entering the VIP ward, Bai Li was watching a variety show. The sound effects were exaggerated, accompanied by Bai Li’s laughter.
Bai Li noticed Bai Yu come in and turned to call out, “Brother, you took so long to come back from your part-time job?”
“It’s okay. Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
“I slept a lot during the day, so I’m not sleepy right now.”
Bai Yu walked to the window and closed the gap slightly to prevent the rain from blowing in. The hem of his shirt shifted, revealing a red mark on his lower back.
“Brother, are you hurt?”
“Hurt?” Bai Yu tugged at his clothes, looking around for any suspicious signs. “Where?”
Bai Li pointed at Bai Yu’s lower back. “You have a red mark on your back.”
Bai Yu vaguely lifted his shirt and realized it was a finger mark left by someone pinching his waist. “It must be a mosquito bite, I didn’t notice.”
“That mosquito is pretty cunning, biting only your waist. You should buy some mosquito repellent.”
“Yeah, I’ll buy some tomorrow.” For a moment, Bai Yu felt like Bai Li’s words had a hidden meaning, but Bai Li was only thirteen and hadn’t differentiated yet, so she shouldn’t be that perceptive.
“Do you want an apple? I’ll peel one for you.”
Bai Li nodded. “Yes, please.”
Bai Yu took an apple from the cabinet, washed it, peeled it, and handed it to his sister. “Did you have a nightmare today?”
“Not anymore.”
“That’s good.”
Bai Yu took out his phone and saw a message from Secretary Zhou: [The boss said to have a comprehensive physical examination. The fee has been paid; just go to the hospital to get the barcode.]
Bai Yu: [Bunny making OK gesture.gif]
There was a doctor on duty in the examination department, and since he was just waiting anyway, Bai Yu went downstairs for the check-up after his sister fell asleep.
All indicators were normal.
Bai Yu took a picture of the report and sent it to Situ Jing: [Everything is fine.]
As he was returning to the inpatient building, Bai Yu received his reply: [Did all the food you ate go into a black hole?]
Situ Jing is still awake this late?
Bai Yu looked at the weight column on his report. [My height is only 1.75 meters. That’s about right. Betas are generally lighter.]
Immediately following, Situ Jing sent another message: [Where are you?]
Bai Yu had a bad feeling. He didn’t reply immediately and turned off his phone.
Back in the ward, Bai Li was still sound asleep. Bai Yu lay on the family bed and played with his phone. Situ Jing sent a second message.
Situ Jing: [Don’t pretend to be asleep. Are you at the hospital or that broken-down communal apartment in the Third Ring Road? Answer me immediately.]
Bai Yu checked the time. It was already midnight. What on earth is he sending this late at night?
I’ll ignore him. I’ll reply tomorrow morning.
After a while, Situ Jing sent a message again: [I’m coming to find you.]
Bai Yu immediately sat up on the bed, his face twisted as he furiously typed: [I didn’t see it just now. I’m at the hospital. What’s wrong?]
[It’s too late now. How about I come find you tomorrow?]
Bai Yu sent the two messages but didn’t receive a reply from Situ Jing, leaving him uncertain whether he was actually coming or had fallen asleep.
Bai Li was a light sleeper. She opened her eyes and saw Bai Yu staring blankly at his phone screen in the dark. “Brother, who are you chatting with?”
Bai Yu quickly turned off the screen. “Who else could it be? Messages from the part-time job group.”
Bai Li pouted. “I don’t believe you.”
“You don’t need to worry about anything else. The most important thing is to recover quickly.”
“Turn on the light. Since neither of us is asleep, playing with your phone in the dark is bad for your eyes.”
“…Alright.” Bai Yu turned on the light.
Bai Li picked up the water cup next to her and drank some water. “Oh yeah, when I was living on the eighth floor, there was a patient’s family member, a big brother, who often brought me food. Do you remember him?”
Bai Yu thought carefully. “I think I have an impression—a tall Alpha wearing black-rimmed glasses. I heard he was studying at the Polytechnic University. He even asked me to play badminton, but I didn’t go. Why?”
“That big brother came up to see me this afternoon. I thought he wanted me to spend time with his little sister downstairs, but guess what he said?”
“What did he say?” Bai Yu picked up the bottled water on the table and drank a couple of sips, waiting for Bai Li’s reply.
“He asked if you were dating anyone and wanted your contact information, which I haven’t given him yet.”
Bai Yu: “Pffft!”
Bai Li burst into laughter. “Brother, are you planning to give it to him or not?”
“Cough, cough, don’t give it to him! Alphas are not my ideal sexual orientation choice.” Bai Yu had choked on the water, his eyes watering.
“That’s for sure. Mom said she hopes you can find a Beta to live a peaceful life with. Betas can only be happy with other Betas. Do you have a Beta you like?” Bai Li asked.
“What kind of nonsense is that? Where did you get the idea that I do? I don’t plan on dating right now.”
Bai Li hummed a distracted “Oh.”
The siblings chatted for a while. Bai Yu turned on the projector on the table and chose an animated movie to watch.
For some reason, Bai Yu couldn’t focus on the movie plot, his mind drifting back to the black figure he saw while crossing the road.
Bai Li shook her water cup. “Brother, I’m out of water.”
The ward was equipped with a water dispenser. Bai Yu took the cup to refill it but found that the barrel of water in the dispenser was empty. The water card indicated that new water wouldn’t be delivered until tomorrow morning.
There was a water room down the right side of the hospital corridor. Bai Yu said, “I’ll go to the water room outside to get some water.”
Bai Li was focused on the animation. “You go ahead.”
