- Chapter 16 - The Married Beta's Birthday, And With Whom? What's Wrong, I Told You To..."
He Lele was sitting on a single sofa, chatting with Bai Li.
Bai Li asked, “Since you work part-time with my brother, you must hear him sing often, right?”
“Yeah, I hear him all the time. People only hire him because he sings well.”
He Lele looked at Bai Yu, “A manager was asking about you, said he hadn’t seen you in a while, and wanted to hire you for a residency. But because of that incident, I told him you were busy with final exams at school. That person didn’t catch you and beat you up, did he?”
Bai Li’s eyes darted between Bai Yu and He Lele, “What happened to my brother? Did someone look for trouble?”
He Lele asked, “Your sister doesn’t know?”
Bai Li, eating an apple, asked, “Don’t know what?”
He Lele had let something slip, so Bai Yu had to explain to Bai Li, “It was just a small accident while I was working part-time at the bar—I accidentally walked into someone else’s private room.”
Bai Li frowned, “Brother, are you okay?”
Bai Yu spread his hands and smiled, “What could happen to me? The one who had trouble was that person.”
“I heard they were making quite a scene that day. After I told the manager the whole story, he didn’t reply to me. Did that customer really not look for you?” He Lele scratched the back of his head.
“No, maybe they looked for a while, couldn’t find me, and just dropped it,” Bai Yu said in a relaxed tone.
He Lele said, “Oh…”
To prevent He Lele and Bai Li from dwelling on the matter and potentially asking more questions, Bai Yu changed the subject. “How have you been lately?”
He Lele crossed his arms, sighing, “Pretty good, just a lot of group assignments, so I haven’t had time for my part-time job. I went out a few days ago and saw two rich second-generation Alphas fighting over an Omega. One was the young master of the Wu family, who smashed over a dozen bottles of Ace of Spades Champagne. It left us completely dumbfounded…”
Bai Li’s curiosity was piqued, “Really? Tell me about it!”
He Lele recounted the bizarre happenings at the bar vividly, filling the hospital room with laughter.
When it got dark, Bai Yu, Bai Li, and He Lele went out to have dinner together.
Bai Li couldn’t eat spicy or greasy food after her surgery, so she just had a bowl of white congee.
He Lele and Bai Yu were eating spicy, numbing barbecue, with several skewers of stinky tofu piled on their plate.
Since being with Situ Jing, Bai Yu hadn’t eaten heavy-flavored food to avoid lingering odors. Now, he was digging in, ready to satisfy his simple palate.
He Lele took a bite of stinky tofu, carefully observing Bai Yu sitting next to him. His side profile was fair and delicate, and his soft, fluffy hair draped over the back of his neck. He was eating very intently. “Hey, how come you look better and better? Did you put on foundation?”
Bai Yu rubbed his face and showed his clean fingers to He Lele. “No, maybe it’s because I haven’t been out in the sun. I’ll get darker if I sunbathe more.”
“Don’t! You look great like this.” He Lele grinned mischievously and leaned closer to Bai Yu.
“You asked me for so many resources and websites before, what have you been up to in private, kid?”
Bai Yu glared at He Lele, signaling him not to say anything inappropriate in front of his sister, and whispered, “That’s normal. Exploring human instinct.”
Although he sounded self-righteous, Bai Yu’s earlobes flushed involuntarily, especially when he thought about following the scenes in the videos with Situ Jing at the Xingzhou Hot Spring Mountain Hotel.
Situ Jing had whispered in his ear, “Were you like this with your ex-husband too?”
Bai Yu said no, and Situ Jing seemed a little happier.
The two were like the low, deep resonance of a piano and the fragile, easily broken soft sound of a harp, soaring and sinking, striving to reach a wonderful limit.
A large amount of pheromones was injected into the back of Bai Yu’s neck. The Alpha’s hot palm rubbed Bai Yu’s face twice. He gazed into his eyes, asking him which song he had liked the most just now.
It was strange that while Situ Jing demanded Bai Yu not eat certain things, the two of them had rarely kissed.
Sometimes Bai Yu would intentionally avoid the distance that might lead to a kiss, but even when Bai Yu proactively kissed his cheek, he would be pushed away.
Bai Yu ate one skewer of stinky tofu and picked up another. He Lele asked, “Want more?”
“Yes, let’s eat our fill tonight.”
The Xingzhou trip had just ended, so Situ Jing probably wouldn’t look for him for the next half a month.
Bai Yu and He Lele went together to add two large plates of meat and vegetable skewers.
Bai Li opened her phone and checked the calendar. “Brother, it’s your birthday next week. How do you plan to celebrate?”
He Lele asked, “How old is Bai Yu turning?”
“Twenty-one. There’s nothing special to celebrate, let’s skip it,” Bai Yu was lactose intolerant and had never really celebrated his birthday.
When his mother was alive, she would make him a bowl of longevity noodles with scallion oil—a bowl with just one noodle that couldn’t break while eating. After his mother was gone, no one made it for him anymore.
Bai Li rested her hands on her cheeks, “No way! Let’s treat it as a celebration of your return to campus, and my new lease on life. We have to go out and eat, right? Let’s choose a place, but no dairy.”
He Lele nudged Bai Yu’s elbow, “I invited you to my birthday last time. Aren’t you going to invite me?”
Last winter, He Lele suddenly called Bai Yu out late at night for a seafood buffet. Bai Yu only realized it was He Lele’s birthday when he arrived.
Since the restaurant had a birthday discount, He Lele and Bai Yu ate a lot, and the discounted bill was only 150 yuan for both of them.
Bai Yu said, “Okay, but only if Bai Li’s health permits.”
Bai Li finished her bowl of white congee. “See? I’m recovering quickly.”
Dr. Deng’s reminder forced Bai Yu to take Bai Li’s recurring nightmares seriously.
To help Bai Li recover faster, Bai Yu brought his professional course notes to the hospital, studying in the room while keeping her company.
Music theory fundamentals require combining sight and sound practice, and Lu Chuo had forwarded the teacher’s courseware to Bai Yu.
Bai Yu watched the piano key demonstrations on the digital course, keeping time and taking notes.
Bai Li had taken her medication and was already asleep, so he lowered the volume slightly.
In all music-related fields, one cannot avoid the “piano,” an ancient instrument. The composition major requires students to take piano lessons but only mandates reaching Grade 7, Czerny 299 or above.
Bai Yu didn’t have a piano at home. He started learning by working part-time at a local music store when he was very young. After the family moved to Nanhang City, their home was near a church, and he often went there on weekends to play the piano.
Three years ago, when he took the piano exam, he just managed to pass Grade 7, narrowly scraping by with Czerny 299. No one knew he had a bleeding bandage wrapped around his leg; they only saw his pale fingers dancing on the keys, playing Liszt’s La Campanella.
A music producer he admired once said that the greatness of music lies in the fact that when you are immersed in it, it seems to even stop the pain of wounds.
Inspired by this resonance, Bai Yu applied to Yun Jing University, the same as his idol.
Although the composition major courses are easy to pass with a certain level of musicality and aesthetic sense, it’s difficult to get a good grade.
Compared to him, many classmates have pianos and other musical instruments at home, and some have even won awards for their early compositions, making the competition fierce. Back in his first year, Bai Yu barely passed the finals while juggling part-time work and classes.
After the Xingzhou trip, a fragment of a melody came to Bai Yu’s mind, and he planned to use his computer to arrange it when he had time.
After studying for an afternoon, Bai Yu turned off the digital course and gently tucked Bai Li into bed. He suddenly noticed many red rashes on her arm.
Bai Yu quickly called the nurse. Then, Dr. Deng came to check and said, “It’s a mild rejection reaction. I’ve prescribed medicine for her. We’ll continue to observe.”
Two days later, Bai Li’s rash hadn’t subsided. She was also constantly drowsy and kept waking up in a panic from her dreams.
Bai Yu tied the small pendant to Bai Li’s wrist and sat by the bed, scrolling through videos. He accidentally stumbled upon a news item about Situ Jing.
“Hengyu Technology Company’s new product launch disrupts the entire high-tech manufacturing industry. The company’s market value soars again, and the Situ family’s wealth is estimated to exceed 700 billion.”
Bai Yu clicked on Situ Jing’s dark profile picture. Their conversation was still stuck on the last time they went to Xingzhou, when Situ Jing asked him to send photos.
He couldn’t just never contact Situ Jing; he still needed to send occasional messages, show some concern, and keep up appearances.
Bai Yu screenshotted the video and sent it to Situ Jing, [So impressive!]
Bai Li asked, “Brother, I’m not sleepy. Talk to me for a while.”
Bai Yu turned off the screen. “Okay, what do you want to talk about?”
“If I can’t catch up with middle school curriculum after I recover, what if I have to go back to elementary school?”
“Elementary school curriculum is very simple now. You can study online and re-take the middle school exam. Do you want to stay in Yunjing to study, or go back to Nanhang City?”
Bai Yu had brought Bai Li to Yunjing to treat her illness. Bai Li was originally studying in Nanhang City.
Bai Li said, “Of course, I want to stay in Yunjing with you. Who would go back to Nanhang City? There’s no home there anymore.”
In the afternoon, someone arrived outside the hospital room—the boy who donated the bone marrow and his parents.
The boy had recovered well after the surgery. The doctor had removed his dietary restrictions, and he had become a bit rounder again. He also brought a box of chocolates for Bai Li.
Bai Li pouted, “I can’t eat it. Did you bring it on purpose to tempt me?”
“You can eat it after you get better.”
“Dummy, by the time I’m better, this box of chocolates will have melted!”
The boy looked at the box of chocolates, pondered for a few seconds, “Then how about I help you eat it?”
“Go ahead, just give me the chocolate wrappers. I want to stick the gold foil onto my clay art.” Bai Li took out the clay box from the table and displayed all her semi-finished creations.
Bai Yu saw the boy’s parents pulling suitcases and asked, “Are you going back home?”
The boy’s father said, “Yes, the doctor said he’s recovering very well and doesn’t need to be hospitalized anymore. We have a lot of things to take care of at home, so we won’t stay here much longer. Bai Li should be recovering soon too, right?”
Bai Yu looked at Bai Li, who was talking to the boy. “Mhm.”
On Bai Yu’s birthday, the red rash on Bai Li’s body had faded a little. He Lele came to the hospital as promised, and the three of them went out for hot pot.
He Lele found the small restaurant, which was tucked away in a remote residential building in the center of Yunjing City. It took the three of them several turns to find the place.
It was lunchtime, and the small restaurant was packed with people, some even wearing their work uniforms.
He Lele said, “A bar manager recommended this place. He said the flavor is great.”
Bai Li couldn’t eat spicy food, so the three of them ordered a (yin-yang pot), half with red spicy soup and half with clear broth. Bai Yu tasted the shrimp paste in the spicy half, and it was indeed delicious.
Bai Li also had a good appetite. She raised her barley tea cup and said, “Brother, happy birthday.”
He Lele also picked up his bottle of Weiyi soymilk. “Don’t forget about me when you get rich in the future~”
Bai Yu was smiling and about to clink glasses when his phone suddenly rang, displaying the two characters (Sick/Insane).
The hot pot restaurant was noisy, so Bai Yu stood up with his phone. “I’ll go take this call.”
Bai Li and He Lele watched Bai Yu walk through the narrow, crowded aisle and step outside before answering the phone.
Bai Yu stood next to the celosia flower bed outside the residential building and cleared his throat. “Hello, Mr. Situ?”
Situ Jing’s deep voice came through the receiver: “Come to Yan Ting Villa at the South Gate.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
Bai Yu hesitated for a moment, looking at the hot pot restaurant where Bai Li and He Lele were pressed against the window, staring at him. “But, it’s my birthday today. I’m having dinner outside.”
The man on the other end sighed, as if he was smoking. “What’s wrong, does my telling you to come over now make it very difficult for you?”
“Let me guess. Are you currently in a small, cramped restaurant, eating inferior, trash ingredients that have been soaked in water, with various artificial flavors added to the seasoning, perhaps even poppy shells? A greasy hole-in-the-wall with an incredibly strong smell? Maybe there are even flea-ridden stray dogs crawling under the tables, gnawing on bones.”
“It’s not as bad as you make it sound!”
