- After Trying To Pursue The Cold, Elegant Beauty. I Ended Up Being Flirted With Instead
- Chapter 15 - A Guilty Conscience
“I will definitely find your evidence and make you pay the price!”
As her voice faded, the phone only emitted a cold, hard click of disconnection.
Beep…
Wen Zhu stood rooted to the spot, her hand still holding the phone to her ear.
The surrounding night was eerily silent, save for the rustle of leaves stirred by the wind.
Under the streetlamp ahead, a moth tirelessly flapped against the light source, its wings trembling as it repeatedly hurled itself forward.
It didn’t know the light was an illusion, an untouchable existence, yet it bravely attempted to reach it again and again.
Wen Zhu lowered her hand, her fingers gripping the phone suddenly tight, turning slightly white from the excessive force.
Like a bow drawn to its limit.
In this moment, she was even a little grateful.
Fortunately, she was not a moth.
Bumping into some walls just once was enough.
“Are you alright?” A voice, cool yet slightly gentle, broke the silence.
Wen Zhu awoke as if from a dream and turned her head.
In the midst of this silent, dim night, Li Zhiyun walked step by step towards her, bathed in the light.
And with her, the entire world seemed to brighten.
Even if she herself showed little emotion, some people, merely by their presence, were enough to become the focal point of the world, even if they did nothing at all.
Just like now, even though Wen Zhu’s mood was at its lowest.
When she saw Li Zhiyun’s face, she couldn’t help but feel a little lost in thought.
Li Zhiyun pursed her lips, “Sorry, I saw you standing here for a while and thought something was wrong, so I took the liberty of coming out to ask.”
“I’m fine.” Wen Zhu smiled, her lips pale.
Li Zhiyun noticed her white knuckles, “But you look very unwell right now.”
“Don’t worry, Miss Li.” Wen Zhu honestly hadn’t expected someone from the Li family to be so concerned about others.
Regardless, this bit of care and warmth made her feel much better.
She said, “I just ran into a bit of trouble and need to go to the hospital. Do you remember the actress we met on the way here?”
Li Zhiyun nodded.
Wen Zhu hadn’t originally intended to tell Li Zhiyun about these awful things.
But then she reconsidered. Li Zhiyun’s status was unusual, and she had just been with Wen Zhu the whole time. In fact, if anyone were to ask, Li Zhiyun was her perfect witness.
Wen Zhu felt her behavior was somewhat contemptible and lowered her head with unease: “That actress is named Jiang Xinxin. Just now, she fell into the water. My boss likes her and suspects I was the one who did it. I need to go to the hospital to check on the situation. Miss Li, thank you for tonight.”
Although it’s generally unwise to immediately try to prove one’s innocence when suspected, Wen Zhu had always known she was alone.
She couldn’t accept this accusation; if this matter got out, it would be a fatal blow to her career prospects.
If she didn’t protect herself, no one else would.
After speaking, Wen Zhu turned to the roadside, ready to hail a taxi.
She had only taken two steps when a warm, soft hand unexpectedly and loosely grasped her wrist.
“I’ll take you.” Li Zhiyun looked at her seriously, “If your boss asks, I can be your witness.”
Having the thought herself was one thing, but when Li Zhiyun actively offered those words, Wen Zhu realized even more clearly how shameful her earlier thought had been.
She stood there in a daze, inexplicably feeling a little teary-eyed.
This seemed to be the first time someone was willing to stand up, even if only to speak a single word for her.
Her heart felt swollen, like she had eaten ten thousand lemons.
She quickly blinked, hiding this slight emotional flicker, her voice hoarse: “Okay, thank you, Miss Li.”
“Let’s go.” Li Zhiyun said, then walked forward, “To my house to get the car keys.”
Wen Zhu’s lips parted slightly, looking in surprise at her wrist which was still being held in Li Zhiyun’s palm.
She wanted to say something, but worried that this behavior might be very common in Hong Kong and pointing it out would be very offensive.
In the end, she said nothing and followed Li Zhiyun away from the location.
Yancheng.
“President Pei!” Seeing that Pei Xiubai was about to throw the phone in her hand, Secretary Sun quickly spoke up to calm her down, afraid of being caught in the crossfire, “Perhaps Miss Jiang’s assistant got it wrong. Maybe that person wasn’t called by Secretary Wen? Secretary Wen doesn’t seem like the type to do such a thing”
“Are you suggesting that Xinxin and her assistant deliberately used this matter to frame Wen Zhu?” Pei Xiubai’s icy gaze swept over her, and the terrifying pressure quickly enveloped the entire office.
Secretary Sun was so frightened she immediately lowered her head, “No, that’s not what I meant!”
“Heh.” Pei Xiubai sneered, “Wen Zhu loves me so much. What wouldn’t she do to get rid of Xinxin? I just didn’t expect her to become so vicious now, even daring to lay a hand on Xinxin!”
Secretary Sun: “…” Are you serious?
If Secretary Wen still loved you, she wouldn’t have submitted her resignation letter!
Moreover, over the past year or so, she had personally watched Secretary Wen’s gaze toward President Pei change from one full of love to one that was dull and lifeless.
She had a belly full of things she wanted to say, but for the sake of her job, she chose to remain silent.
Pei Xiubai frowned, looked at her phone again, and then, thinking of something, scoffed again: “Wen Zhu hired someone to hurt Xinxin. I knew she was still jealous of Xinxin, and agreeing to go to Tongcheng was clearly just one of her tactics! Since that’s the case, I definitely can’t let her have her way!”
She slammed the phone onto the desk and instructed Secretary Sun: “Go tell Wen Zhu that I’m giving her one last chance! She has to take responsibility for her own mistakes! Tell her to go to the hospital and take care of Xinxin until she recovers! If she can’t even handle this small matter, there’s no need for her to stay in this secretary position any longer!”
Wen Zhu had just arrived at the hospital when she received Secretary Sun’s message, and she wasn’t surprised in the least.
After so many years with Pei Xiubai, she had always known what kind of person Pei Xiubai was.
Of proud birth, a top-tier noble, a darling of fortune; the world seemingly had to revolve around her.
Such a person didn’t care about right or wrong; she only required compliance.
“I’ll wait for you in the car. After you’re finished, I’ll take you back.”
Wen Zhu glanced sideways. The city’s noise was blocked out by the car window.
Li Zhiyun in the driver’s seat had her left hand resting on the steering wheel. The light inside the car was dim, with only the instrument panel emitting a faint blue glow, outlining her superior profile.
Her slender fingers were unadorned, appearing simple and clean.
She turned her head to look, giving Wen Zhu the inexplicable illusion that the whole world, in her eyes, could only see her.
This feeling was truly strange.
Wen Zhu shook her head. Had that bowl of noodles confused her? Why would she have such a misconception?
“Thank you for the trouble.” After saying this, Wen Zhu practically fled out of the car.
Soon, Wen Zhu found Jiang Xinxin’s hospital room.
She walked into the VIP room and overheard the little assistant angrily condemning her: “Sister Xinxin! You can’t be too kind it will only let others bully you! This incident was absolutely orchestrated by that Wen Zhu! She is clearly resentful that you’re about to become President Pei’s girlfriend, which is why she bribed people in the crew. You absolutely must make President Pei properly vent your anger this time!”
Jiang Xinxin was about to become Pei Xiubai’s girlfriend?
Wen Zhu listened to the words and laughed mockingly.
So, this matter wasn’t so difficult after all.
Something that took others only two months to achieve, took her over a decade and she still couldn’t do it.
“Knock, knock.”
Wen Zhu knocked on the hospital room door, “Excuse me, since someone inside is speaking ill of me, I thought knocking was necessary.”
“You… Why are you here?!” The little assistant turned around and immediately stood up, horrified to see the person she had just been speaking ill of standing at the door.
Her expression was clearly flustered.
“If I didn’t come, how would I hear what people are saying about me behind my back?” Wen Zhu smiled, though the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
After all, she had been Pei Xiubai’s chief secretary for so many years and had seen all sorts of turmoil. Frightening a little assistant was simply effortless.
The little assistant quickly realized her heart was pounding like a drum, but the next second, she mustered her courage.
Why should she feel guilty? Wen Zhu was the one who did something wrong!
Having thought this through, the little assistant puffed out her chest and glared fiercely at Wen Zhu, “How dare you show up here? What, are you not satisfied with having harmed Sister Xinxin enough?! I’m telling you, the matter of you hiring someone to hurt Sister Xinxin is not over. I’ve already called the police, and the police will definitely find your evidence and make you pay the price!”
“Evidence?” Wen Zhu curled her lips, her eyes filled with chilling coldness. She deliberately picked up an apple from the table.
With a slight squeeze of her fingertips, a sharp “Crunch!” sounded.
The apple instantly burst apart in her hand!
Juice splattered, the flesh exploded, and fragments scattered across the floor!
“So, you went to Pei Xiubai to complain about me without any evidence whatsoever.”
She fixed her gaze on the little assistant, watching her face gradually lose all color, and spoke every word, calmly yet sinisterly: “Is that right?”
