- Chapter 10 - Heart-Stopping
Could it be that this little aunt is also a fighter?
Early the next morning, Wen Zhu received the transfer order to Tongcheng, sent by Secretary Sun.
Secretary Sun also attached a note: [Secretary Wen, President Pei is just angry right now. If you go to him, apologize, and ask for forgiveness, this transfer order can be revoked immediately.]
Wen Zhu and Secretary Sun had a decent relationship before, so she thanked him, then continued to pack her things and headed straight for Tongcheng.
Tongcheng was a lukewarm tourist city, rich in the style of a Jiangnan water town and not yet completely commercialized.
A gentle breeze swept across, creating ripples in the clear water beneath the stone bridge.
Wen Zhu didn’t want to stay in a hotel and found a well-rated bed and breakfast according to her travel guide.
After settling down and reviewing the documents for the Tongcheng branch company, she planned to explore the surroundings in the evening.
When she went downstairs, the landlady was playing mahjong.
Amidst the clattering sound of mahjong tiles, the landlady spotted Wen Zhu and called out, “Hey, little girl, you’re going out, right? Do me a favor, go to the nearby park and fetch my son back for me!”
“Wait, the Eight of Bamboo? Pong!” After calling “pong,” she didn’t forget to continue speaking to Wen Zhu, “He’s by the lake. The one with the loudest voice is my son. His name is Qiaoqiao!”
The landlady had helped her carry her luggage upstairs when she checked in, so Wen Zhu felt she couldn’t refuse and agreed.
There weren’t many people at the park. Wen Zhu saw the little boy she was looking for from afar.
Qiaoqiao was sprawled over a chessboard, intently staring at the game, fine beads of sweat dotting his forehead.
Sitting opposite him was a little girl with a ponytail, looking serene, her eyes showing a hint of obvious pride.
Qiaoqiao nervously clutched his clothes. He was about to lose.
Before long, he finally couldn’t hold it in anymore, his mouth drooped, and he let out a loud “wah,” starting to cry.
His voice was bright, like he had a loudspeaker no wonder the landlady said he was noisy.
Wen Zhu moved closer, her gaze involuntarily falling onto the chessboard.
The two were playing Go. With just one glance, Wen Zhu could see the complex situation of the game.
The little girl’s playing style was sharp and decisive, pressing forward relentlessly. Each stone she placed practically locked down all of her opponent’s escape routes.
Such a steady, precise, and ruthless style was completely unlike something a seven or eight-year-old child could display.
She couldn’t help but look at the little girl again. It was this glance that Qiaoqiao caught.
He seemed to have found a lifeline, looking at Wen Zhu with tear-filled eyes, and quickly said, “Big sister, you know how to play, don’t you? Please help me!”
The little girl across the board grew anxious when she saw Qiaoqiao asking for help and accused him, “A loss is a loss. How can you cheat?”
Qiaoqiao angrily made a face at her: “Mind your own business! I just can’t stand how arrogant you are!”
The little girl lifted her chin, sounding old beyond her years, “Chess is like life a move once made can’t be regretted. Don’t you even understand such a simple principle?”
The girl’s baby voice was tender, but as she spoke, she held her chin high, looking calm and confident.
Wen Zhu looked at her, and her heart skipped a beat
She felt like she had heard that phrase somewhere before.
It sounded like the statement that went viral across the internet when that genius Go player won the world championship at fourteen…
Wen Zhu’s thoughts were brought back by Qiaoqiao’s voice.
He pitifully tugged at Wen Zhu’s sleeve, his face full of anticipation, “Pretty Big Sister! If you help me teach her a lesson, I can give you my rare, limited edition Ultraman toy!”
Wen Zhu laughed, thinking she could certainly do without the Ultraman.
But looking at the little boy’s red eyes and the look of impending tears, she ultimately softened.
When Wen Zhu was little, her mother passed away early, and she had very few people to keep her company.
Qiao Yu didn’t want Pei Xiubai to get too close to her, so she enrolled Pei Xiubai in all sorts of extracurricular classes.
Wen Zhu, left alone in the Pei family house, gradually became fascinated with Go. While she wasn’t an expert, she knew a thing or two.
She stepped forward, looking down at the board, and grew increasingly alarmed
Had human evolution progressed to the point where even seven or eight-year-old could play such terrifying games?
The outside world had truly gone crazy in ways she no longer recognized.
After a moment of thought, she finally spotted a slight flaw. Pointing to a specific location, she whispered to Qiaoqiao, “Want to try this spot?”
Qiaoqiao followed her gaze, his eyes immediately lighting up. He exclaimed excitedly, “This spot works!”
Holding a white stone and gesturing on the board, his eyes sparkled with excitement.
This spot not only broke the little girl’s trap though it would cost a few stones but also opened up many paths to survival!
It was an exquisite move that turned defeat into victory!
Qiaoqiao looked up at Wen Zhu, his eyes gleaming: “Thank you, Big Sister!”
With that, he couldn’t wait to pick up the white stone and place it firmly on that crucial point.
Seeing the tables turn, the little girl abruptly slapped the board, wrinkling her nose as she fiercely and childishly shouted, “This game doesn’t count! I’m not playing with a cheater like you!”
Her cheeks puffed out, looking utterly enraged, losing her previous pretense of composure.
She pointed a small hand toward Wen Zhu and complained in a clear, baby voice, “And you! You bad woman! Even though you’re so pretty and soft and smell nice, you ganged up on me. Now, I don’t like you at all!”
As soon as she finished speaking, the little girl ran away, her eyes red.
Wen Zhu: “…”
QAQ What is this inexplicable sense of guilt?!
Qiaoqiao, however, didn’t care at all. His little face was glowing with excitement. He bounced twice on the spot, smiling brightly, “Big Sister, I won! I really won! This is the first time I’ve ever beaten Li Jiaojiao!”
Wen Zhu watched the little girl’s retreating figure and couldn’t help but remind him, “Aren’t you going to check on her? She looks like she’s about to cry.”
Qiaoqiao waved his hand, saying, “Don’t worry about her. She cries all the time.”
Then, as if he suddenly remembered something, he frantically grabbed Wen Zhu’s hand and urgently said, “Oh no, Big Sister! Li Jiaojiao must be going to find her little aunt! Her little aunt is scary, let’s run!”
“Scary?” Wen Zhu raised an eyebrow.
Could it be that Jiaojiao’s little aunt is also a fighter?
But before she could ask for details, Qiaoqiao had already pulled her by the hand, and they took off running.
Sure enough, not long after, Jiaojiao reappeared in the park, holding the hand of a woman.
The spring wind carried moisture, lifting the woman’s fine, long hair.
The setting sun’s glow scattered upon her, further highlighting her cool and distant demeanor, like the perpetually un-melted snow on a mountain peak.
With clear, cold eyes, she looked down slightly at the remnants of the game on the board, her gaze indifferent.
Jiaojiao gripped her hand, her eyes red as she looked around, cheekily complaining, “Little Aunt! They ran away! Let’s go find that smelly Qiaoqiao!”
Li Zhiyun looked down at Jiaojiao and helplessly rubbed her head: “Jiaojiao, it’s just a game of Go. A loss is a loss.”
Jiaojiao stubbornly lifted her small face and insisted, “No way! Smelly Qiaoqiao got a bad woman to help him. His win doesn’t count!”
She piteously clutched Li Zhiyun’s hand and sobbed, “Little Aunt, can you really bear to see me cry, cry?”
Her older sister doted on this daughter the most. Seeing her red eyes, Li Zhiyun finally gave in, sighing reluctantly, and picked her up: “Alright, I’ll take you to find him.”
With that, the two headed in the direction of the bed and breakfast.
