- Chapter 6 - Zhizhi is Not Afraid
Chen Yanzhi had been in a great mood, but after witnessing that scene earlier, his heart felt heavy for some reason. Subconsciously, he was worried about Fu Tingyue, scared that he, too, might be affected by an Omega’s pheromones and lose his sanity.
It was the peak of midsummer, and while the seaside was cool at night, Chen Yanzhi felt a chill. Tucking his thin arms close to his body, he stared out at the pitch-black surface of the sea. “Fu Tingyue, let’s go back. I don’t want to stay out here anymore.”
Fu Tingyue took off his coat and draped it over Chen Yanzhi’s shoulders. Without a word, he led him back to the car.
Chen Yanzhi pulled the suit jacket tighter around himself. His shoulders felt heavy; perhaps the quality of the suit was just that good. He eventually took the jacket off and placed it on Fu Tingyue’s lap, lowering his head to stare blankly at his own knees. The glow of the streetlights filtered in, landing on his face, but his thick eyelashes shielded the worry deep in his eyes.
There were too many unknowns in this world, including the so-called “Alpha Rut” and “Omega Heat” periods. Currently a Beta, he did not have to worry about himself, but since Fu Tingyue was an Alpha, Chen Yanzhi was deeply concerned.
“Zhizhi,” Fu Tingyue asked softly, “Are you feeling unwell again?”
Chen Yanzhi shook his head. His hands, resting on his knees, clenched into fists. He could not bring himself to voice his concern; it felt too awkward. In the past, Chen Yanzhi had unilaterally cut ties with Fu Tingyue, vowing never to speak to him again. Suddenly saying caring things felt mushy and not “cool” at all. Besides, Fu Tingyue might think he was just being a coward, overthinking things because of what happened earlier.
But on second thought, Fu Tingyue had been nothing but caring since they arrived in this world, frequently offering words of comfort. Chen Yanzhi suddenly felt he was being a bit too sensitive.
He exhaled a long breath, relaxed his fists, and looked at Fu Tingyue. “If you were also affected by an Omega’s pheromones and lost your mind, how would I save you?”
Fu Tingyue froze. It felt as if a fine needle had pricked his heart; a dull, dense pain spread through him, followed by a heartbeat that grew increasingly rapid and deafening. He gripped his slightly trembling hands, feigning composure. “Is that what you’re worried about?”
Chen Yanzhi kept his head down. He had intended to use a lighthearted tone, but the words felt heavy as they left his lips.
“You’re an Alpha too. No matter how strong your willpower is, you’ll be affected. If you lose your mind, how am I supposed to save you? Do I knock you out and tie you up? Would that hurt your body?” He turned to look at Fu Tingyue, his beautiful large eyes drooping, filled with worry.
While Fu Tingyue was happy to be the object of Chen Yanzhi’s concern, he hated seeing him look so distressed. He reached out and ruffled Chen Yanzhi’s soft hair, speaking gently. “It’s okay. This world has specific injections to suppress Ruts and Heats called suppressants. You regain clarity right after the shot. I’ll be fine.”
Chen Yanzhi swatted Fu Tingyue’s hand away, knitting his brows. “Do they work for everyone?”
Fu Tingyue nodded. “Generally, yes.”
“And what about the ‘not general’ cases?” Chen Yanzhi asked anxiously.
“Some people have unique constitutions, or for medical reasons, they cannot use suppressants frequently; otherwise, it causes irreversible damage.” Fu Tingyue’s voice was slow and soothing, like a glass of warm water: neither too hot nor too cold, just right.
Chen Yanzhi hissed through his teeth, frustratedly tugging at his hair. “Don’t tell me you are the type who cannot use suppressants.”
Fu Tingyue originally wanted to nod and say yes, but looking into Chen Yanzhi’s eyes, he suddenly could not bear to. He shook his head. “No, I am quite healthy. I can use them.”
Chen Yanzhi let out a massive sigh of relief, his tense body finally relaxing. He slumped his shoulders, feeling fortunate. “That’s good then.” At least he knew how to save Fu Tingyue now; he would not be helpless if they encountered a situation like that again.
Fu Tingyue gave a silent smile. “Home, or do you want to wander somewhere else?”
“Let’s go home.” Chen Yanzhi waved him off, leaning tiredly against the seat. His beautiful face was fully visible. Regardless of which world they were in, Chen Yanzhi was very pale. Under the streetlights, his skin seemed to glow, and Fu Tingyue could almost see the veins beneath the surface.
Watching Chen Yanzhi’s Adam’s apple bob as he swallowed, Fu Tingyue subconsciously swallowed as well. He whispered to the driver, “Straight home.”
“Yes, Young Master,” the driver replied respectfully.
Chen Yanzhi did not speak again. With an outsider present, he was worried about accidentally slipping up, so he chose to remain silent.
Upon returning home, Chen Yanzhi and Fu Tingyue went upstairs. Only back in the bedroom did it feel like a world that belonged solely to the two of them.
Chen Yanzhi collapsed onto the sofa, looking up at Fu Tingyue. “I always feel like I’m being watched. It’s so exhausting.”
Fu Tingyue looked down at Chen Yanzhi’s elegant collarbones, letting out an uneasy cough and averting his gaze. “You don’t need to be so tense. I’m here. If you accidentally say something wrong, I’ll cover for you.”
Chen Yanzhi sighed. “Are all these people around you your confidants?”
It did not feel like it. Even though he had been raised as a pampered, lawless youth and had never experienced “wealthy family power struggles,” his intuition was usually spot on. After only one day at Fu Tingyue’s house, he felt that many people in this mansion were not on Fu Tingyue’s side, especially those bodyguards and the driver.
Fu Tingyue shook his head. “They were arranged by the family. The original owner of this body had only taken over the company for two years, and coupled with his sudden suicide attempt by overdose, his parents were worried about something happening again. That’s why they arranged for so many people.”
In reality, they were there to spy on him. It was likely they had already thoroughly investigated Chen Yanzhi’s identity by now.
Chen Yanzhi turned over to lie on his stomach on the sofa. “Are the parents on this side not good to you?”
While Fu Tingyue had been mature since childhood and was not clingy like Chen Yanzhi, he had a good relationship with his parents in their original world. If the parents here were just as good, Fu Tingyue would not be living alone.
Fu Tingyue corrected him: “They were not good to him.”
Chen Yanzhi tsked. “Weren’t you the one telling me to accept this world? Yet here you are, drawing such a clear line?”
Fu Tingyue smiled. “I’m still not quite used to it.”
Chen Yanzhi rolled his eyes. “Typical.”
Fu Tingyue sat down beside Chen Yanzhi, taking a moment to center his thoughts before speaking. “I have a younger brother. Our parents favor him; they only view me as a tool to manage the company.”
Chen Yanzhi asked, “Is your brother a Top Alpha too?”
Fu Tingyue shook his head. “Just an ordinary Alpha. And his health isn’t great.”
According to the original owner’s memories, the parents had been biased toward the younger brother since childhood. They even planned to give the company inheritance to the brother, while Fu Tingyue was merely the laborer helping to run it. That was why the original owner had felt hopeless enough to commit suicide.
Chen Yanzhi was baffled. “Then what are they after? Why ignore a Top Alpha like you and favor a sickly weakling who cannot achieve anything?”
Fu Tingyue shrugged indifferently. “I don’t know.”
Regardless, they were not his real parents. Once he gained a solid foothold in this world, he would start his own company. He would not leave his or Chen Yanzhi’s fate in the hands of others. He would climb to the top without relying on anyone to protect Chen Yanzhi.
Chen Yanzhi burst out laughing. “It feels like you are not very close to them.”
Fu Tingyue laughed along. “Indeed, we are not. I’ve only met them once, back when I was still in the hospital.”
Chen Yanzhi offered a rare word of comfort. “It’s fine. They aren’t your real parents anyway. At worst, we’ll just earn our own money, start a company, and cut ties with that family.”
He had originally hoped that Fu Tingyue’s parents in this world would treat him well, but he did not think so anymore. He and Fu Tingyue were the only ones who could truly rely on each other; everyone else was untrustworthy.
Hearing this, the smile on Fu Tingyue’s face deepened. “I’ll do as you say.” Their thoughts were in perfect sync.
Chen Yanzhi tilted his chin up arrogantly. “Of course you have to listen to me. Who else would you listen to?”
Fu Tingyue chuckled and stood up. “It’s getting late. Go wash up and get some rest. We’ll talk more tomorrow.”
Chen Yanzhi stood up and stretched. He dug a pair of pajamas out of the wardrobe and went to wash up. Fu Tingyue lingered in the room for a moment to ensure everything was in order before turning to leave.
After his shower, Chen Yanzhi crawled into bed. So much had happened today that he fell into a deep sleep almost instantly.
In the middle of the night, Chen Yanzhi had a nightmare. He dreamed that the bus he and Fu Tingyue were on had crashed. They had not come to this strange world; they were truly dead. Their parents held their mangled, unrecognizable bodies, weeping heart-wrenchingly.
Chen Yanzhi woke up with a start. Looking at the unfamiliar surroundings, he gasped for air, his forehead drenched in sweat. This was the first time he had a dream like this, and he could not tell what was real anymore. Maybe being reborn into this world was the lie, and the dream was the reality.
The more he thought about it, the more terrified he became. He grabbed his phone, turned on the flashlight, and got out of bed barefoot. He walked straight to Fu Tingyue’s bedroom and knocked.
Since arriving here, Fu Tingyue never dared to sleep too deeply. Knowing Chen Yanzhi was in the next room tonight made him even more alert. The moment he heard the knocking, he turned on the light and opened the door.
Seeing Chen Yanzhi, Fu Tingyue’s heart stung with a sharp pain. The usually bright and flamboyant Chen Yanzhi was standing there looking utterly insecure, clutching his phone, barefoot and covered in sweat.
Fu Tingyue did not ask questions. He leaned down, swept Chen Yanzhi up into his arms, and brought him inside. “Zhizhi, what’s wrong?”
Chen Yanzhi seemed to have lost his soul, huddled obediently in Fu Tingyue’s arms. His knuckles were white from gripping his phone so hard. Fu Tingyue sat on the sofa with Chen Yanzhi in his lap, gently wiping the sweat from his forehead. “A nightmare? Don’t be afraid. I’m here. It’s okay now.”
It took a long moment for Chen Yanzhi to snap out of it. He asked with terror, “Fu Tingyue, are we really still alive?”
Fu Tingyue took his trembling hand and looked into his eyes. “We are really alive. If you don’t believe me, try pinching me.”
Chen Yanzhi gripped Fu Tingyue’s hand tightly. “I dreamed we died. Our parents and your parents were holding our bodies and crying. We were unrecognizable; we were almost like pulp.”
Fu Tingyue felt a pang of heartache. “Zhizhi, don’t cry. It was just a dream. Since we came here, those two people must have gone to our world. They will live on in our place.”
Chen Yanzhi wanted to say he was not crying, but then he felt his own tears. Fu Tingyue pulled him into a hug, patting his back like he was soothing a child. “Zhizhi is not afraid. That was a dream; this is what’s real.”
Listening to Fu Tingyue’s strong, steady heartbeat, Chen Yanzhi gradually calmed down. It was too hot in Fu Tingyue’s embrace, and his head was getting sweaty again. Chen Yanzhi gave Fu Tingyue a slight push and climbed down from his lap.
He cleared his throat, feeling awkward. “I’m fine now. That was just an accident.”
Fu Tingyue did not push it. He took Chen Yanzhi’s cold hand. “Do you want to sleep here with me?”
Chen Yanzhi initially wanted to refuse, but the thought of that dream terrified him. Only by Fu Tingyue’s side could he be certain he was not dreaming. He stole a glance at Fu Tingyue and nodded. After a quick wash, he stepped into Fu Tingyue’s large slippers and climbed onto the bed. Nestled among the bedding that smelled of Fu Tingyue, his restless heart finally settled.
