- Chapter 6.1 - The Parents Have Been Summoned
When the two of them met up again, they shared a tacit understanding not to mention the fact that they were now more than two hours over their “budgeted” time.
Taking another taxi back to school, they climbed over the wall to get back in, only to find that the evening self-study sessions had already ended. The entire campus was empty; except for the dormitory buildings, there wasn’t a ghostly shadow to be seen anywhere else.
“Darn it, we still have to climb the dorm building.” Rolling up his sleeves, Shen Junfu stood in the bamboo grove outside the dormitory, already beginning his preparations.
The first floor of the dormitory had security bars, making it impossible to crawl through. One had to climb from the first floor to the second, and then crawl in through a second-floor window.
Looking up at Shen Junfu, who had already started moving, Huo Qingzhuo felt somewhat worried. However, it wasn’t a concern for safety; rather, she wondered if someone clinging to the wall like a giant gecko wouldn’t be spotted by the patrolling school security guards.
Before Huo Qingzhuo could finish weighing the possibility, she saw the powerful beam of a flashlight sweep past. After circling once, it shone directly on Shen Junfu, who was currently sprawled against the second-floor window.
“Which class do you belong to! Come down here right now!”
With a blast of a whistle, several security guards from the surrounding area swarmed over. Seeing that things were going south, Huo Qingzhuo didn’t care about notions of “loyalty unto death” or “classmate camaraderie.” Taking advantage of the moment when the guards’ attention was entirely focused on Shen Junfu, she used the bamboo grove as cover and quickly ran to the other side of the dormitory building, evading capture.
Hanging from the windowsill, Shen Junfu watched with wide eyes as Huo Qingzhuo abandoned him and fled in an act of “betrayal.” While cursed her in his heart for being disloyal, he also felt a sense of relief; at least it wasn’t a total wipeout. Otherwise, as the instigator, he would have felt even more guilty.
Shen Junfu was caught that night, and by the next morning, a school-wide notice was issued. However, because Shen Junfu had been featured in school-wide notices so many times, it didn’t cause much of a stir. On the contrary, Shen Junfu proved to be extremely loyal; he gritted his teeth and refused to divulge anything about Huo Qingzhuo, which moved her quite a bit.
“It’s nothing. Anyway, my parents are coming on Friday. Coming once to solve several issues makes this trip even more worth it.”
Initially, he had been somewhat worried about his parents being summoned, but now, Shen Junfu had completely come to terms with it. “Many lice don’t itch, and many debts don’t worry you”—he truly looked like a “dead pig that isn’t afraid of boiling water.”
To thank Shen Junfu for his loyalty, Huo Qingzhuo splurged for once and treated them to a meal, and she didn’t forget to show off a bit.
“To be honest, this outing was quite worth it. I just happened to run into that person I told you guys about, and this time I successfully got her contact information.”
Spending so much time with these vibrant young people, Huo Qingzhuo felt herself becoming a bit childish; as soon as she got something good or heard good news, she couldn’t resist showing it off.
“Boo~”
Wei Qingqing had learned bad habits from being around Shen Junfu. Together, they voiced their disdain for the beaming Huo Qingzhuo, pushing and shoving her into the supermarket, claiming they were determined to eat her into poverty.
The few of them enjoyed a couple of comfortable days. Regardless of whether Shen Junfu wanted it or not, Friday arrived right on schedule.
Early that morning, Shen Junfu began to feel restless. He didn’t even sleep, staring with wide eyes toward the door.
The punishment that was meant to arrive would not be late by even a second. Just after Huo Qingzhuo finished two sets of test papers, Wenren Heyu walked in with the news that had made Shen Junfu anxious for days.
“Shen Junfu, your parent is here. Come out with me for a moment.”
“It’s over, it’s over, it’s over…” Shen Junfu instantly bounced up, turning into a human repeater, looking at Huo Qingzhuo with a mournful face. “If I don’t come back, you have to take care of yourself…”
Huo Qingzhuo looked at Shen Junfu’s melodramatic acting with some amusement. “Where do you get all this drama? Hurry up.”
“So heartless!”
With a wail, Shen Junfu followed the homeroom teacher out with the tragic air of a hero who would never return.
“I heard Shen Junfu’s family background is incredibly powerful, so his family discipline must be very strict. I heard that for this parent-teacher meeting, even the principal was waiting at the school gate early this morning.”
“Heavens, no way? If they’re that powerful, isn’t Shen Junfu in big trouble this time?”
“Not necessarily. I also heard that Shen Junfu is the sole heir, so he might get scolded, but it won’t really affect anything.”
“Wow, I’m so jealous. Isn’t that like being born with an entire city of Rome? Unlike us, who can’t even see the edge of the city walls.”
Amidst the chorus of discussion, Huo Qingzhuo continued to grind through her problems as if she hadn’t heard a thing.
In the novel, it was originally described that the protagonist Shen Junfu had a superlative family background along with various enviable talents.
Never mind that Shen Junfu’s grades were currently in the bottom ten of the whole school; later, in order to pursue Wei Qingqing, Shen Junfu used only two months to surpass the results others had worked for over ten years, jumping from the bottom ten to even becoming the school’s top student.
This was probably what they called “Protagonist Aura”—omnipotent, bringing a storm of change wherever they went.
However, these things were destined to have nothing to do with Huo Qingzhuo. The path she wanted to take had no intersection with the protagonist. All she thought about now was how to safely and quickly break away from the plot.
Looking at it now, that goal was not far off.
On the other side, Shen Junfu had already been led to the Principal’s office.
Inside the office, a woman dressed in a white suit was sitting on the sofa. The principal sat opposite her, brewing tea with a face full of smiles.
If Huo Qingzhuo were here, she would have discovered that the person in the white suit—who else could it be but Shu Yueqing?
Shen Junfu dawdled at the door, looking up at the expressionless Shu Yueqing, feeling more than a little intimidated.
“Mom.”
Adopting an extremely good attitude for admitting his mistakes, Shen Junfu ingratiatingly moved to Shu Yueqing’s side with a smile, pounding her shoulders like a sycophant. “It must have been tiring for you to make this trip. You have so many official duties; actually, you don’t need to worry about me. I’m doing quite well here.”
“I am not worried about you. I am worried about the person you beat up.”
Shu Yueqing’s expression was flat. She looked up at Shen Junfu, but then she thought of that girl from before who was about the same age as Shen Junfu. At the same age, how could they be worlds apart?
“You can rest assured about that; I’ve always had a very good sense of proportion when I strike.”
Completely unable to tell good intentions from bad, Shen Junfu actually had the heart to be flippant even now.
Facing Shen Junfu’s somewhat silly smiling face, Shu Yueqing turned her head away, unable to bear looking at this foolish display.
“Yueqing,” Wenren Heyu, who had come over with Shen Junfu, watched as this matter was about to be brushed aside and took the initiative to lodge a complaint. “We can set aside the matter of them messing around during the summer break for now. But just the night before last, a security guard on midnight patrol caught Shen Junfu climbing down from a second-floor window. This is such a dangerous behavior; you really must discipline him.”
“The night before last?” Shu Yueqing felt that this time point was somewhat familiar.
“If I jump down from the second floor, it’s just dirt underneath. I wouldn’t even get injured, so how is that dangerous?” While massaging Shu Yueqing’s back, Shen Junfu tried to argue his case. After all, besides Shu Yueqing, no one could control him.
Her train of thought interrupted by Shen Junfu, Shu Yueqing stopped thinking about those coincidences for the moment. “Don’t always think about these lucky scenarios. If something happens, it will be too late for you to regret it.”
“There won’t be a next time.” With a good attitude for admitting his fault, Shen Junfu lowered his head and gave his word.
Shu Yueqing stood up and reached out to rub the top of Shen Junfu’s head. “I won’t interfere with what kind of person you want to be or what kind of life you want to lead. But the prerequisite for these things is that you must ensure your own safety, do you hear me?”
“Mhm, I hear you. So you came here this time because you were worried about my safety?”
Shen Junfu looked up, his eyes sparkling as he looked at Shu Yueqing, hidden anticipation in his gaze.
“Yes and no. It just so happened that I was thinking about the project I invested in for your school to support underprivileged students, so I planned to come over and take a look.”
Ever since meeting a good talent like Huo Qingzhuo who was limited by family conditions, Shu Yueqing had remembered the aid funds she had invested in various middle schools. Meeting with Shen Junfu’s situation provided the perfect timing, so she came to Shengguan first to check on the situation.
“It is a pleasure that President Shu still remembers this matter.” Standing to the side, the principal finally found an opportunity to chip in. He quickly pulled a thick file from a nearby cabinet.
“Here is a list of students from Shengguan Middle School who have successfully graduated under the sponsorship for underprivileged students over the years. It is all thanks to President Shu’s vigorous support over these many years.”
Looking at such a thick file, Shu Yueqing didn’t even want to touch it. But seeing the principal’s expectant eyes, she took it and flipped through a few pages before returning the file to him.
