- Chapter 48 - Belated Apology
In the midst of their continuous fall, Yue xi held Qinghe’s hand.
It was pitch black all around, but she knew it had to be Qinghe.
A pair of arms wrapped around her waist, and a ethereal voice said, “It’s me.”
Little Qinghe hugged Yuexi and rested her face on Yuexi’s chest, casting a slow, sidelong glance at Qinghe.
She had jumped right after Yuexi fell, so she had won this time.
Qinghe had no time for such childish games; all she could think about was how to get out.
Yuzhu’s heart demon had fallen into the time-space rift with them and had unexpectedly merged, so its divine power was now greater than any of theirs.
Yuzhu had most of his divine power siphoned off by the heart demon and was clearly ailing and unreliable. Now, they could only rely on her and this annoying little thing.
Back in the Divine Realm, she had felt a profound divine power, which should have been her awakened power.
This was left to her by the Father God, and it would directly become part of her divine power upon reaching adulthood, but…
Remembering something, Qinghe’s brows furrowed sharply, and her body swayed. Yuexi quickly asked, “Xiao Qing, what’s wrong?”
Qinghe held her hand back, trying her best to control her emotions. “I’m fine.”
Little Qinghe’s expression was a little dejected. Even though she had jumped down without hesitation, Yuexi didn’t seem to belong to her.
Despite the lack of extensive communication between the two, it felt as though no one could intrude.
There seemed to be an invisible barrier around them, automatically excluding everyone else.
Little Qinghe’s eyes gradually dimmed.
Qinghe gathered a wisp of divine power on her fingertip and waved it behind them. A vine quickly grew, climbing upwards into the boundless darkness.
The speed of their descent quickened. Yuexi could only hug Little Qinghe with one hand and hold tightly onto Qinghe with the other. A cold, damp feeling washed over her, and all her strength was rapidly draining away.
Yuexi didn’t know where they would fall, so she could only do her best to ensure the two Qinghes were less injured.
“Let go,” Qinghe’s voice suddenly cut through the air.
Yuexi knew she had found a solution and let go just in time. Sure enough, Qinghe stopped falling. Yuexi activated her spiritual sight and saw Qinghe looking down at her from above, those cold, clear eyes getting farther and farther away.
This was good. At least one of them could survive.
For something like this to happen in the Divine Realm, even Qinghe and Yuzhu were helpless. The situation had to be extremely perilous. All she could do in this situation was not be a burden.
Right. If she couldn’t help, at least she wouldn’t be a liability.
Yuexi was very philosophical.
From the day she decided to break up the official couple, she was prepared for punishment. She treated every day with Qinghe as if it were the last, and every extra day was a bonus.
At worst, she would die, and it wasn’t even a certainty.
Since they had transmigrated from the modern world, perhaps dying here would send them back to the real world.
Yuexi’s mind was completely at ease. She patted the Little Qinghe in her arms.
“That method Qinghe used, you should be able to do it too, right? Don’t dilly-dally. I can’t save you; you have to save yourself.”
Little Qinghe was about to speak when a thick vine wrapped around both their waists, and they were pulled up.
Qinghe watched them, her arms crossed, and her tone was neither warm nor cold. “How does it feel to be a pair of lovebirds?”
Little Qinghe spoke quickly. “It feels great! You’d better stay out of it forever.”
Qinghe scoffed and turned to look around. Yuexi followed her gaze and immediately got goosebumps.
The surroundings looked like walls but not quite. Green, slimy moss clung precariously to them, and beneath the moss, layers of white bones were stacked. Some had a single hand sticking out, others were just heads. It looked as though people had been walled up alive.
As she watched, the moss turned red, and viscous, foul-smelling blood seeped from the corpse wall. The temperature dropped sharply, and it felt as if all the blood in her body was about to freeze.
Yuexi closed her eyes. She regretted using her spiritual sight.
“What’s wrong?” Little Qinghe turned her head curiously. Yuexi quickly covered her eyes. “It’s nothing good. You don’t want to see it.”
Little Qinghe said, “Oh, then I won’t look.” She hugged Yuexi’s waist and nestled into her arms.
Qinghe sneered, “You’re so considerate of her.”
Yuexi touched her nose and replied, “Isn’t this just like being considerate of you?”
Qinghe said nothing more, as she couldn’t find a reason to refute it.
The surroundings had turned a dark red. The stench of rotting blood was overwhelming, and Yuexi felt like her nose was about to explode just from one whiff.
The vine on her body grew branches and leaves, climbing up her shoulder and covering her nose. A scent of fresh wood and plants hit her, and her mind instantly cleared up.
She looked at Qinghe, who didn’t seem to be paying attention to her and was instead observing the terrain to find a way out.
A whooshing sound came from behind them, and Qinghe dodged to the side. Yuzhu fell straight down right in front of them.
Yuexi asked, “Aren’t you going to help him?”
Qinghe pouted her lips. “A dignified Divine Venerable who can’t even deal with a heart demon. Useless!”
Little Qinghe got up from Yuexi’s arms and then fished Yuzhu out.
Yuzhu, his balance unstable, landed on the platform woven by Qinghe’s vines. He smiled at Little Qinghe and said, “You’re the best. I didn’t dote on you for nothing.”
His eyes fell on Qinghe, and he added, “Unlike an ingrate who just watches her brother fall.”
Qinghe said indifferently, “Useless!”
That light, dismissive word was the most powerful retort, and Yuzhu was silenced.
True, he was the Divine Venerable revered by the six realms, but now with most of his divine power taken by the heart demon, he was only slightly better than Yuexi, a mortal. In a real crisis, he had to rely on his two younger sisters.
Forget it. This girl held a grudge. If he made her angry, she might really abandon him.
The four of them stood on the vine. Three had nothing to do, while only Qinghe was thinking of a way to break the situation.
In the dark space, the only sound was the “drip, drip, drip” of blood, thick, viscous, and sickening.
“I say,” Qinghe’s voice broke the silence, “if you don’t find a way, we’re going to fall right now.”
As her voice faded, silence returned, but amidst the stillness, there was a subtle rustling sound. It was very faint, only audible if one listened carefully.
What was that sound? It was like a small animal chewing on something.
Yuexi looked around and noticed something unusual. The blood on the corpse wall was flowing in the same direction.
Qinghe’s vines were directly inserted into the corpse wall. Now, that blood was clinging to the roots of the vines, corroding them.
The vines grew with Qinghe’s divine power. Although she wouldn’t feel pain, her divine power would definitely be affected.
She stood silently, her expression calm. Sensing Yuexi’s gaze, she turned, and seeing the worry in her eyes, she was stunned for a moment, then showed a faint, gentle smile.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine.”
She then waved her hand, and the blood clinging to the vines was swept away, but the corpse wall began to make “crackling” sounds, as if the white bones were scrambling to climb out.
Yuzhu turned to Little Qinghe and asked, “Do you have a way to break this wall?”
Little Qinghe was stumped. She had never experienced a situation like this and didn’t know what to do.
“Just follow what I taught you. Let your mind guide your movements, and concentrate your divine power in your palm…”
Before Yuzhu could finish, a surge of divine power burst from Little Qinghe, and a green vine mark appeared behind her ear.
Qinghe’s eyes darkened as she watched.
She hadn’t felt such pure divine power in a long time.
She raised her hand. The divine power in her palm was not a pure white glow but was mixed with a wisp of black mist. Qinghe stared blankly for a few seconds, then put her hand down with a self-mocking look in her eyes.
When she looked up, her eyes met Yuexi’s. She didn’t know how long Yuexi had been watching her.
Yuexi said nothing but pulled her into a hug.
“There’s nothing to be sad about. No matter what, you’ll always be the Divine Maiden of Lingxu.”
Qinghe was momentarily dazed. The self-mockery in her eyes vanished, replaced by a faint, gentle smile.
This clumsy comfort was worse than giving her a kiss.
Qinghe’s gaze settled on Yuexi’s lips. Seeing her look, Yuexi quickly covered her eyes with her hand.
“No, now is not the time for that.”
“Okay, then I’ll remember it, and you’ll make it up to me once we get out.”
After saying that, Qinghe kissed Yuexi’s collarbone from memory, then took her hand away and said softly, “Go stand with Yuzhu.”
Yuexi moved towards Yuzhu. As soon as she was steady, she saw Qinghe raise her hand and set up a formation. Two kinds of light, one black and one white, intertwined in her hand, creating a strange kind of beauty.
Little Qinghe had already made her move. She was on the offensive, and her divine light illuminated the entire corpse wall. Qinghe, however, was focusing her attacks on a specific area. The protruding bones on the wall made “clacking” sounds, and the viscous blood flowed like water. Everything within sight was red.
At first, Yuexi didn’t understand why she chose to attack that spot until the complete skeleton emerged, and then she understood.
The wall was built of bones, but they were all individual skulls, arms, and legs. There wasn’t a single complete skeleton. Perhaps the secret to breaking out of here was in that skeleton.
The skeleton gradually emerged from the corpse wall. The dark red blood on it gave off a faint black mist, and the surrounding walls trembled. The sounds were spine-chilling.
“Yuzhu, protect Yuexi.”
As soon as Qinghe’s words fell, the skeleton completely detached from the corpse wall. It walked towards Qinghe as if it were alive. Qinghe didn’t pay it much mind at first, but then realized she couldn’t completely fend it off.
The black mist on the skeleton grew thicker and thicker, and Qinghe’s brows furrowed deeply.
Her divine power wasn’t pure; the demonic energy within it was being absorbed by this thing!
Yuzhu wanted to help her but couldn’t abandon Yuexi. After setting up a barrier for himself and Yuexi, he had little divine power left and couldn’t provide any timely help.
The ground shook. Little Qinghe staggered but quickly steadied herself and changed direction.
“You’re not so great after all.”
Her tone was slightly mocking. She easily helped Qinghe get rid of the skeleton.
Qinghe’s eyes were complex. Before she could say anything, the corpse wall completely collapsed.
Thick, putrid blood splashed towards them. Little Qinghe quickly wrapped the three of them in vines and flew towards the spot where a bright light was showing.
As the blood poured over her, Yuexi’s mind became fuzzy. There were sharp roars all around, and she felt as if her eardrums were shattered. Her head throbbed with pain.
In a daze, one skeleton after another came at her, scrambling to choke her neck, devour her flesh and blood, and swallow her soul…
“Yuexi! Yuexi! Wake up!”
Qinghe was calling her, but her eyes wouldn’t open. The demons were still tearing at her body. It hurt so much!
They had gotten out, but not completely.
Before, it was a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood. Now, this place was more like hell. Eerie blue flames burned, and the air was thick with malevolent energy. The temperature was so low that her skin felt like it was rippling, and countless specters seemed to be lurking in the dark places untouched by the flames.
The heart demon had woven an illusion, but it only trapped Yuexi because she was a mortal.
No matter how weak Yuzhu was, he still had some divine power to protect him. Yuexi had nothing.
Qinghe didn’t hesitate. She picked Yuexi up, pressed her forehead against Yuexi’s, and prepared to transfer her divine power to her. But Little Qinghe stopped her.
“Let me do it. After all, your divine power… isn’t pure.”
She hadn’t intended to bring it up, but saving Yuexi was more important now. She couldn’t afford to be so considerate.
Qinghe was stunned for a moment. She mechanically handed Yuexi over to Little Qinghe, and her eyes completely darkened.
Yes, her divine power wasn’t pure. What if it made Yuexi’s nightmare worse?
Seeing her like this, Yuzhu gently patted her shoulder and said, “It’s not your fault.”
Ultimately, he was the one who gave rise to the heart demon, which led to this series of events. So, everything had to be resolved.
“Hahahaha…”
A sinister laugh echoed from all directions. Qinghe, already in a bad mood, immediately stood up and struck a phantom with her palm, turning the heart demon’s clone into dust.
“Come out! Stop playing tricks!”
The laughter gradually ceased. The phantoms coalesced into a single form. The heart demon floated in front of them, a sinister and wicked smile on its face.
“How is it? Is my Demonic Realm fun?”
Qinghe sneered, her divine power surging in her hand. “You’re a mere derivative, and you even have to copy others’ names. Yuzhu lives in the Divine Realm, so you name this place the Demonic Realm? Don’t be so ridiculous!”
Her eyes suddenly turned cold. “You copycat! How disgusting!”
The surging divine power in her hand shot towards the heart demon. The heart demon nimbly dodged and disappeared from its spot.
“Why be so angry? Your demonic power is greater than your divine power. We should be on the same side.”
“Before you speak, look at yourself. How dare a lowly heart demon try to command this Venerable? You’re asking for death!”
Qinghe was already angry. Seeing the heart demon with the same face as Yuzhu made her even angrier, and she could no longer control the demonic power within her.
Yuzhu saw that things were about to go south and quickly said, “Qinghe, calm down!”
Qinghe glanced at him, her eyes filled with the same disgust. “It’s no mistake to call you useless. You let yourself be controlled by a thing like this.”
Ever since she learned of the heart demon’s existence, the truth behind some events had slowly come to light. Qinghe would have rather things were as she originally thought, at least it would prove that Yuzhu was still the Divine Venerable he used to be, not like he was now, so weak that he was worse than a mortal.
Yuzhu touched his nose. He didn’t want this either, but a heart demon would grow with even the slightest opportunity. When he returned from the Demon Realm, he was injured and completely unaware that he had been corrupted. By the time he found out, it was too late.
But now that they were back here, he would make everything return to its original place.
“You want my body, don’t you? I’ll give it to you.”
Yuzhu spoke calmly. Qinghe flung a vine to pull him aside and said angrily, “Stop talking nonsense! If you can’t help, stand back and don’t distract me!”
Yuzhu smiled helplessly. “Okay, I won’t talk anymore. You fight him.”
He knew she wouldn’t win. This was its home ground.
If Qinghe’s divine power were pure, she might be able to try, but…
The younger one hadn’t grown up yet. She didn’t even know how to use the divine power left by their Father God. How could she fight a heart demon that had taken most of his divine power?
“I wanted to be gentle with you, but since you’re so stubborn, don’t blame me.”
The heart demon’s voice grew deeper and deeper until it was almost a roar. It stopped running and chose to confront Qinghe head-on. Qinghe had already used up half of her power in the corpse wall and could only barely hold her own against the heart demon’s full-on attack.
“Your divine power is running out, and your demonic power isn’t pure. You truly are a contradiction.”
The heart demon began to attack Qinghe’s weaknesses, and while it spoke, it didn’t forget to deliver a fatal blow.
Qinghe couldn’t resist and was hit by its demonic power. She was sent flying, and a trickle of blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.
Yuexi woke up dazed, just in time to see Qinghe flying towards her. She quickly reached out to catch her, and the two of them fell hard to the ground.
Yuexi heard a loud thud from her back. The huge impact nearly displaced her internal organs, but luckily she was cushioning the fall, so Qinghe’s impact was much smaller, so she was fine.
Qinghe lay in her arms and asked weakly, “Yuexi, are you okay?”
Yuexi let out a long breath and replied, “I’m fine. How are you?”
“I’m alright. Not dead yet,” Qinghe joked.
Yuexi hugged her tighter and buried her face in her shoulder. “Don’t say that. We still have to go back together. Sister Shuang must be worried sick about us.”
“Okay,” Qinghe said faintly. “I’ll definitely take you out.”
Little Qinghe listened to their conversation, her face gray with dejection. Sure enough, no one could come between them.
She turned and walked towards Yuzhu, asking him, “Brother, do you have a way to deal with it?”
Yuzhu’s gaze was distant. “There is no way to deal with it, but there is a way to destroy it.”
Little Qinghe looked at him in shock. Yuzhu also turned to look at her and smiled. “Later, you will lure it to me, then take them and run in the opposite direction. Since this place was modeled after the Divine Realm, the exit must be in the southwest.”
A sense of unease welled up in Little Qinghe’s heart, and her face wrinkled. Yuzhu patted her head and said softly, “I wasn’t a good brother. I hope you can forgive me.”
These words were meant for the Qinghe who hadn’t grown up yet, and for the Qinghe who had gone through those events. Although it wasn’t his intention, it was his fault. This apology was late.
As they spoke, the heart demon attacked again. Little Qinghe resisted with all her might, luring the heart demon in front of Yuzhu as he had instructed.
Yuzhu gathered all his divine power in the center of his brows. As the Divine Clan’s mark broke, he merged with the heart demon.
“Yuzhu, stop!”
Qinghe’s attempt to stop him was too late, and she spat out a mouthful of blood in her panic.
Little Qinghe hadn’t expected his method to be like this, but she had promised her brother she would do it. She tearfully wrapped the two of them in vines and ran towards the exit.
The heart demon sensed Yuzhu’s intentions and laughed scornfully. “You think you can seal me in your current state?”
“I’m not trying to seal you,” Yuzhu said.
“Then why are you seeking death?”
“Well, let’s die together.”
It was only then that the heart demon realized he was trying to drag it down with him.
Just as it frantically tried to separate, Yuzhu began to release all his divine power. His divine bones broke, inch by inch.
The heart demon thrashed wildly within his body, causing his flesh to burst open, covered in blood.
“Stop struggling. Let’s both perish. You shouldn’t exist in this world in the first place.”
The mark on Yuzhu’s brow was already covered in fresh blood. He took one last look in the direction the three of them had left, then fell limply.
The heart demon howled and roared, but it was to no avail. Yuzhu’s body was slowly disappearing, turning into small white light particles and flying towards the sky. Afterwards, a rain fell on the Demonic Realm, which had been covered in darkness and demonic energy for years.
Where the raindrops washed, the thick demonic energy vanished. Sunlight streamed in, and darkness had nowhere to hide.
Just as the three of them were about to reach the exit, something unexpected happened. A loud bang came from behind, and an invisible force pushed them out. Then, a dazzling light filled their vision, and the Demonic Realm disappeared in an instant.
The three of them, thrown by the force, fell to the ground. Qinghe lay still on the ground, watching the raindrops fall from the sky, soon becoming completely soaked.
A light particle landed on Qinghe’s nose, and Yuzhu’s voice came through. “If you don’t want those things to happen, now is the perfect time to fix them.”
Qinghe rejected the offer without a second thought. “The past is already set. What difference would it make if it changed?”
Besides, if the past were changed, would she still be able to meet Yuexi?
The light particle left her nose and flew towards the sky.
“Qinghe, take care of yourself. I have to go.”
Qinghe’s eyes felt a little sore. She tried her best to control herself, keeping her voice calm.
“Where are you going?”
“To find the Father God and the Mother Goddess and tell them that you’re doing well now.”
The light particle disappeared, and the rain grew heavier. Qinghe’s vision gradually blurred.
“Brother, don’t go…”
What does a sweet romance writer do when they want to write something heartbreaking? Of course, they break someone else’s heart. So, the brother gets a temporary lunchbox.
This one is also so long and thick! (looking at myself in the mirror)
