Wen Chenqing has transmigrated into a book.
Her original character was meant to be the “foil” to the female lead—a girl who, out of jealousy, schemed against the protagonist, only to be beaten to death and dumped in a mass grave once her crimes were exposed.
Wen Chenqing, who was a high-achieving “involution” expert in her past life, throws away the tragic script and starts grinding in this sweet romance novel instead. While strengthening her body and devouring classical literature to prepare for the imperial examinations, she also takes care of a young orphan girl with amnesia.
The amnesiac girl is named A-Jin, whom Wen Chenqing rescued while traveling. A-Jin is exquisitely beautiful, with a face like a flower and a delicate charm. Her favorite thing to do is cling to Wen Chenqing all day long—even at night.
Whenever Wen Chenqing tries to refuse her, A-Jin looks at her with tearful eyes and sobs, “Does Qingqing not want me anymore?” Her pitiful appearance makes it impossible for Wen Chenqing to be firm, so she indulges her every whim.
Until one day, Wen Chenqing returns home early and sees A-Jin leaning comfortably on a couch, casually saying to the person beside her: “Wen Chenqing? She’s just a fool, I’m just playing with her. After faking amnesia for all these days, I’ve long grown bored of it.”
Only then does Wen Chenqing realize that her “pitiful little amnesiac” is actually the empire’s Eldest Princess. Rumor has it the Eldest Princess is peerlessly beautiful and elegant, with countless suitors flocking to her. As it turns out, she actually had the leisure to toy with a “fool” like her.
Wen Chenqing breaks ties with her then and there.
However, the Eldest Princess—the one who called her a fool and claimed she was bored of the game—suddenly refuses to let go.
“Qingqing, you promised me that you would take care of me forever.”
With eyes full of paranoid obsession, the woman traps Wen Chenqing in her private space, fiercely and arrogantly grabbing her collar to demand a kiss. No longer hiding her identity, Si Jinghua becomes indulgent and overbearing, clinging to Wen Chenqing and forbidding her from leaving.
Si Jinghua was the Eldest Princess of the Great Yong Dynasty. A favored child of heaven. In the original plot, she eventually became a political sacrificial lamb, forced into a marriage alliance, and died alone in a foreign land.
Because the contrast between her early glory and tragic end was so devastating, Wen Chenqing had stopped reading the book.
After transmigrating, she encounters this haughty and paranoid Eldest Princess before her hardships begin. She pities her, indulges her, kisses her, and loves her. In the end, they live in perfect harmony as monarch and minister.
But Wen Chenqing didn’t know that the Si Jinghua she thought died in a foreign land had actually undergone a rebirth through fire in the original timeline. She had spread her wings like a phoenix to reach the supreme throne, becoming a tyrant whose name everyone feared.
One day, walking by the window, Wen Chenqing once again overhears Si Jinghua talking to her attendant.
“Does Lord Wen no longer love Us?”
“Why would Your Majesty say such a thing?”
“She didn’t even give Us the usual morning kiss before leaving today. She must be tired of Us.”
As the maid falls into thought, Si Jinghua adds with a murderous aura: “If she dares grow tired of Us, We shall lock her in the bedchamber every single day and—”
Their eyes suddenly meet. Wen Chenqing offers a gentle, harmless smile.
That night, Wen Chenqing granted Si Jinghua’s wish. Except, the person being “locked up” was someone else.
