Chapter 13: Immortal Pill
The injured people were all their neighbors. Yu Yingxia hurried over to help several people who had been knocked to the ground.
“Auntie Peng? What happened! Your house…” The middle-aged woman Yingxia helped up was named Peng. Her family ran a pork stall; they weren’t wealthy, but they were kind-hearted. They often sent cuts of meat to the “sisters” to help them nourish their bodies.
Now, Auntie Peng’s courtyard gate was smashed open, the right wooden door hanging by a single hinge, and the interior was in shambles, as if swept by bandits.
“What a sin…” Auntie Peng wiped away tears, accidentally smearing blood and soot across her face. Her husband sat nearby with his head bowed, silent, his injuries more severe. Relatives who had come to help were also sporting bruises and cuts, while children huddled around Auntie Peng, sobbing.
Seeing this, Yingxia rushed back to her courtyard to grab medicine and bandages for everyone.
As she applied the ointment, Auntie Peng tearfully explained the family scandal. It turned out her brother-in-law had become obsessed with a so-called “Immortal Pill.” Being a shiftless loafer with empty pockets, he had bought the pills on credit. The dealers, clearly harborng ill intentions, had allowed the debt to pile up. Now, the brother-in-law had vanished, leaving a mountain of debt on his brother’s doorstep.
The debt collectors were like bandits. Finding no money to squeeze from the Pengs, they had tried to snatch the children to sell them into slavery! Fortunately, the relatives had fought back desperately to keep the kids safe.
“Snatching children in broad daylight? Does no one care? What about the local authorities?” Yingxia was shocked by such brazenness. This was still a mortal realm governed by an Emperor; there should be laws.
Auntie Peng gave a bitter laugh. “Without the protection of the magistrate’s office, would these thugs dare to be so arrogant?”
Yingxia fell silent. If the local officials had been bought, ordinary citizens had no choice but to swallow their grievances.
“Forget it. Before they left, they said the debt was cleared and they wouldn’t come back. Wealth is just a material thing; as long as the family is safe, it’s enough. We can’t afford to offend people like that.” Auntie Peng suddenly grabbed Yingxia’s hand, her voice urgent. “Those ‘Immortal Pills’ are a scam! Don’t be fooled! They definitely won’t cure your sister’s illness!”
Auntie Peng feared that Yingxia, desperate for her sister’s recovery, might fall into the same trap. Everyone who took the pills changed—they became terrifying, going mad if they couldn’t get more. It wasn’t medicine; it was poison that destroyed families.
“I understand. Don’t worry, I won’t buy them,” Yingxia comforted her.
Auntie Peng looked at the ointment on her hand and sighed. “This medicine must have cost a lot. You two sisters don’t have it easy. My money was taken, but I have some cured pork left. Take a piece home.”
Yingxia politely declined several times until the woman gave up. Just then, a little girl named A-Hui tugged at Yingxia’s sleeve. “Sister, this is for you.”
Yingxia patted her head, but before she could speak, a foul, rancid stench hit her nose. The little girl opened her fist to reveal a pitch-black pill.
Yingxia instinctively closed the girl’s hand to hide it, her heart racing. Auntie Peng turned pale. “A-Hui! Where did you get that?”
“It’s a treat Uncle hid,” the child said innocently. She didn’t know it was an “Immortal Pill”; she only knew that every time her uncle ate one, he looked like he was floating in heaven.
“Did you eat any?” Yingxia whispered, her expression tense. The stench reminded her of the corpse pits at the bottom of the Changsheng Sect.
“No, it smells bad. I was scared to eat it.”
Yingxia breathed a sigh of relief. If the child had consumed it, she would have had to summon the protagonist immediately. After promising the girl sweet soup in exchange for the truth, Yingxia confirmed it was the only one.
“Auntie Peng, the ‘immortals’ in the mountains often send me medicine. When the next one visits, I’ll hand this over to her for disposal,” Yingxia said, wrapping the pill in several layers of cloth.
Yingxia hurried back to her courtyard. The moment she closed the gate, Yan Huaixi’s voice rang out, filled with utter disgust.
“What did you bring back? Why is it so foul!”
Yan Huaixi felt her soul being assaulted. Having lived in the Changsheng Sect, she was used to rot, but lately, she had been pampered by Yingxia’s peach-blossom scent. This sudden stench nearly made her gag.
“My Lord, they call this an ‘Immortal Pill’ in the city. I thought it was suspicious, so I brought one back.” Yingxia waved the cloth bundle.
“They call that an Immortal Pill?” Yan Huaixi sneered. Just from the scent, she knew the pill contained ground-up rotted corpses and malicious souls. Was someone trying to ascend or refine zombies?
Seeing Yingxia casually holding the bundle, Yan Huaixi snapped, “Do you even know what that is?”
Yingxia shook her head blankly.
“That pill is made from the flesh of rotted corpses. Are you sure you want to keep holding it?”
Yingxia’s face went blank. She stared at the bundle in her hand. Realizing she had touched it, she shrieked internally, threw the thing onto the ground, and sprinted to the well to wash her hands!
Watching her frantic retreat, Yan Huaixi’s lips curled into a smirk. That’ll teach her a lesson for bringing filth home.
Yan Huaixi stood up. Her wound still twinged, but it was bearable. She stepped toward the bundle, used a flick of spiritual energy to dig a hole, kicked the bundle in, and buried it. She then sprinkled some medicinal powder to completely mask the smell.
So stupid. Bringing back unrefined filth without even knowing how to mask it… she’s lucky she didn’t lead a trail of enemies back here.
She reclined back on her lounge chair, the sun warming her. She wondered who had sent someone this “dumb” to her side. But then again, it was lucky the girl was with her otherwise, she would have probably managed to get herself killed by her own clumsiness long ago.
