After Transmigrating, I Fell in Love with a Top-Tier Movie Queen - Chapter 16
A New Look, a New Role
Two days later, Ye Linghua received a call from Meng Kelin, urging her to come to the company. Lin Xin was more excited than she was. She spent the entire morning pulling out clothes she had bought for Ye Linghua, trying on different outfits and accessories.
Ye Linghua, amused, reminded her, “I’m going there to be an assistant.”
Lin Xin simply hummed in agreement, not changing her mind. She glared at Ye Linghua and explained, “You need to dress well. You can’t let people look down on you.”
Ye Linghua accepted the clothes Lin Xin handed her—a tight, short, gothic-style dress. The shoulders were a mix of different fabrics, the sleeves were a hollowed-out design, and the dominant black color gave it a classic, sexy style.
Ye Linghua couldn’t help but say, “Let them look down on me. Can I even do my job in this?”
Lin Xin was not happy to hear that. “No, you can’t be looked down on. No one can look down on my person.” The two of them paused at the same time, and a moment of silence filled the air. Lin Xin thought about it for a long time but ultimately decided not to explain what she meant. Instead, she whispered, “I’m not asking you to do much anyway.”
Ye Linghua chuckled and, in a gesture of compromise, pushed her out of the room. “Yes, yes, I’ll change. I’ll change.”
Lin Xin was pushed out the door, and she could only wait patiently.
A moment later, Ye Linghua opened the door and walked out. Lin Xin had great taste, and the clothes were fashionable and stylish, highlighting all of Ye Linghua’s best features—her slender waist, long legs, and fair skin. Ye Linghua had a style that made even clothes from a street stall look like international high fashion, let alone the clothes Lin Xin had carefully selected.
Lin Xin was stunned for a while. “You know, if you wanted to get into the entertainment industry… it would be a good fit. I could help you.”
Ye Linghua was speechless. She fell into a pit once, and she’s not even scared to do it again, she thought to herself. She’s already made one ungrateful person famous with her resources. Now she wants to do it again? Isn’t she afraid of raising another ingrate?
Ye Linghua was confident she wouldn’t be one, but she was still worried about Lin Xin’s lack of caution.
Fortunately, it was just an idea, and Ye Linghua had no such ambition. They both got dressed and went downstairs. Meng Kelin was waiting for them and leaned out of the car to take a good look at them.
In the season of blooming flowers and chirping birds, against a background of nature’s beauty, the sight of them walking side by side was harmonious and lovely.
Meng Kelin sighed and complained in her heart, After all that, I’m the one who looks most like the assistant.
An Assistant’s First Day
Lin Xin’s company, Yuntian Entertainment, was located in the heart of Youcheng. Lin Xin had bought her house there to be closer to the office. Yuntian was one of the biggest entertainment companies, but with the rise of new companies, it had fallen on hard times. The company was old-fashioned and hadn’t fully embraced new trends, leading to a gradual decline even though it was still profitable every year.
Even so, an old camel is still bigger than a horse. Yuntian was still a giant in the entertainment industry. Its resources were far beyond what small or new companies could match, not to mention its modern facilities and the skyscraper in the city center that stood as a symbol of its era.
Lin Xin was immediately called away when they arrived, so Ye Linghua followed Meng Kelin to get a tour of the company. Meng Kelin, being a manager, was surprisingly patient. She took Ye Linghua from the first floor all the way up, introducing her to every room. After the tour, she took her to Lin Xin’s recording studio.
“So, did you get it all? Do you remember?” she asked.
Ye Linghua nodded. It wasn’t hard for her.
Meng Kelin raised an eyebrow. This wasn’t the first time she had given a tour, but Ye Linghua was probably the first person to remember everything after just one time.
“Are you sure?” Meng Kelin asked.
“I’m not completely sure,” Ye Linghua said. “It’s okay. I have my phone. I’ll contact you if I have any questions.”
Meng Kelin’s voice was filled with a hint of bitterness. “Don’t treat me like your assistant. I’m not always free to answer my phone.”
Ye Linghua looked at her and said, “Okay. Don’t worry. I have a general idea, and I’ll find a way to solve any other problems.”
She sounded so confident that Meng Kelin seemed convinced. She generously patted Ye Linghua’s shoulder. “Alright. I’m putting Lin Xin’s work in your hands.”
Ye Linghua was taken aback. “In my hands?”
Meng Kelin chuckled. “I’m a manager. Lin Xin isn’t my only star. I have a lot of other people to take care of. That’s why I need an assistant like you!”
“But… this is different from a tour,” Ye Linghua said. “I’ve never been in the entertainment industry.” She had no idea what it took to make a female celebrity successful.
Meng Kelin patted her again, this time to reassure her. “Don’t worry. You’re just an assistant. We won’t come to you with big problems. For you, all your work can be summed up in one sentence: take good care of Lin Xin.”
Ye Linghua’s words got stuck in her throat, but she finally nodded. “Okay.”
Meng Kelin laughed. “With your skills… have you even mastered cooking yet? And you’re so confident.”
Ye Linghua: “…”
“So, you were really a housekeeper before?” Meng Kelin asked. “Where was this place? A housekeeper with no cooking or cleaning requirements?”
Ye Linghua knew Meng Kelin was a bit suspicious, but since she had gone through a proper interview, she wasn’t worried. “My previous employer saw that I could tutor her child, so she didn’t care that I couldn’t cook. I told Mrs. Lin about this during the interview.”
Meng Kelin: “…”
Meng Kelin gave up on prying. She had only been a little curious, and since Ye Linghua wasn’t going to explain, she had no choice but to drop it. Before leaving, she instructed Ye Linghua, “Buy some water for Lin Xin. Give it to her after her recording session. Also, ask her what she wants for lunch and get it for her. I’ll be downstairs. Call me if you have any problems.” (The part about not answering her phone was just a joke; after all, Lin Xin was her most valuable star).
Ye Linghua nodded. After Meng Kelin left, she went to the nearby vending machine and bought a few bottles of water. She brought them back and waited in the hallway, not daring to enter the recording studio for fear of disturbing Lin Xin.
The hallway was busy with Yuntian employees—some worked there, others were newcomers to the industry, and there were also managers and assistants. Besides the recording studios, the floor also had classrooms for music, dance, and etiquette.
When classes ended, people came out and saw Ye Linghua leaning against the recording studio door, seemingly waiting for someone. Her outstanding looks quickly caught everyone’s attention. They wondered which manager had found such a beautiful newcomer.
Those in the know started whispering. “I heard from my manager that she’s probably Lin Xin’s new assistant.”
“Oh, is that her? My manager mentioned it, too. I didn’t expect her to be so pretty.”
“Do you guys really think she’s just an assistant?” another voice asked, filled with doubt. “Isn’t she the one who went viral with Lin Xin before? Didn’t the news say she was a kept woman?”
The malicious speculation quickly spread, and Ye Linghua keenly sensed it.
As she was trying to find the source of the gossip, the door behind her opened. Lin Xin’s sweet voice, tinged with surprise, said, “Were you waiting for me?”
Ye Linghua paused and turned. Lin Xin happily came closer, took a bottle of water from the plastic bag, and even opened one for Ye Linghua, handing it to her. The easy, natural gestures made it seem like they had done this a hundred times before. Ye Linghua suddenly realized that this made her look… not at all like an assistant.
Sure enough, the whispering behind them grew louder.
Ye Linghua: “…” This is a real problem, she thought.
