After Transmigrating, I Fell in Love with a Top-Tier Movie Queen - Chapter 15
A Fragile Connection
For Ye Linghua, the distance between her and Lin Xin was as vast as a mountain and an ocean, and there was also the impassable chasm of life and death. As she lifted her hands to push Lin Xin away, Ye Linghua finally regained her composure.
It was then that Lin Xin looked up from her embrace. In the soft light, her eyes were filled with a pitiful, puppy-like gaze. Ye Linghua’s resolve faltered. Sometimes, rationality is like a tightrope, and it’s easy to lose your balance. In that moment, the distance between life and death seemed like nothing more than a thin line. A step to the left or right, it didn’t seem so difficult after all.
“Thank you, thank you so much,” Lin Xin said, her voice filled with emotion. Her housekeeper, her assistant, was special. Lin Xin had always known Ye Linghua was unique. It wasn’t just her distinctive demeanor, but a special feeling she’d had since the very first day they met. It wasn’t because of her stunning beauty, but because of the packet of tissues she’d offered under the rain, the look in her eyes, and the smile she’d given.
Ye Linghua would never know how hopeless Lin Xin had felt on the day Zheng Ranwen abandoned her. She had sat on the steps, her house behind her like a monster’s gaping mouth. But Ye Linghua had stayed with her and helped her go back home. So, it didn’t matter that she couldn’t cook or do housework. Ye Linghua had given Lin Xin exactly what she needed most.
But good people are desirable. Ye Linghua had a beautiful face, a noble temperament, and perhaps talents Lin Xin didn’t know about. Not knowing how to cook or do housework couldn’t keep her there forever. Lin Xin knew that one day, she would surely leave.
“You’re welcome,” Ye Linghua replied.
Lin Xin giggled and rubbed her head against Ye Linghua’s chest.
Ye Linghua immediately straightened up and pushed her away, looking serious. “Go to bed. You must be exhausted from the past couple of days, right?”
Lin Xin, a bit disappointed to be pushed away, took two steps closer. But the topic had been successfully changed. “I’m not busy,” Lin Xin said. “The arranger is!”
Recently, thanks to Mr. Zhang’s connections, they had been introduced to an excellent music arranger. Lin Xin had met with the arranger, who had immediately gotten to work.
“The arranger is busy, as he should be,” Ye Linghua said.
Lin Xin chuckled. “Yeah, but the arrangement is almost done. I’ll start recording the song in the next couple of days. It’s all thanks to Mr. Zhang. Sister Meng is thrilled to have such a great arranger.”
Ye Linghua leaned against the wall, keeping some distance. “What about you?” she asked.
Lin Xin paused, looking puzzled. “I’m happy too, of course!”
Ye Linghua nodded. “Oh.”
Lin Xin: “…”
Seeing that Lin Xin didn’t say anything, Ye Linghua asked, “What’s wrong? Did I say something bad?”
Lin Xin narrowed her eyes. “You’ve asked me that before. Why do you keep asking?”
Ye Linghua: “… What should I say?”
The question stumped her. Would it be wrong to say she was happy because Lin Xin was happy? Fortunately, Lin Xin didn’t need an answer.
“I like that you ask,” Lin Xin said. It gave her the pleasant illusion that Ye Linghua’s presence was solely for her. This meaningless illusion made her feel happy.
Ye Linghua felt a flutter in her heart. She sighed and couldn’t resist reaching out to ruffle Lin Xin’s hair. Then, she stopped herself, realizing she had overstepped, and quickly pulled her hand back. She was about to apologize, but Lin Xin didn’t seem to mind. She simply fixed her messy hair and said casually, “I want to have soup dumplings for breakfast tomorrow.”
With that, she turned and left.
Ye Linghua was momentarily stunned. She just watched as the door closed, catching a glimpse of the hem of Lin Xin’s dress. She didn’t know that as soon as Lin Xin closed the door, she leaned against the wall, touching her flushed cheek, and muttered, “Ruffled my hair? Heh, I’ll deduct your salary.” Her words were surprisingly fierce.
A Shared Life
“Are they good?” Ye Linghua wasn’t good at making soup dumplings. In fact, she couldn’t make them at all. But to complete her task, she had looked it up on her phone the night before.
She found a famous soup dumpling shop in a small alley in Youcheng. It was so popular that people would line up for it, with the queue often stretching to the main road. Lin Xin’s house was far from the shop. Delivery drivers usually wouldn’t take the order, and if they did, the dumplings would be cold. To ensure they were fresh and delicious, Ye Linghua borrowed Lin Xin’s car early in the morning. After waiting in line for half an hour, she finally bought the dumplings.
Lin Xin was happy to have them while they were still hot. When Ye Linghua asked if they were good, Lin Xin nodded enthusiastically.
Ye Linghua sighed in relief, glad that her morning’s efforts weren’t wasted.
Lin Xin pointed across the table. “You should eat too!”
Ye Linghua didn’t hesitate. She poured them both some soy milk and sat down. They had been living this way for over a month and had grown accustomed to it.
People called her a housekeeper, and she did her best to do the housework. Her cooking wasn’t great or refined, but she tried. And while she wasn’t a housekeeper, Lin Xin did help her clean and cook.
Ye Linghua seriously considered their relationship. It felt more like they were roommates.
“What are you thinking about?” Lin Xin asked, squinting as she leaned closer.
Ye Linghua sighed, placed her hand on Lin Xin’s head, and pushed her back gently. “I’m thinking about what to make for dinner.”
“Oh,” Lin Xin said, not at all upset. “I’m not sure if I’ll be back in time tonight.”
“Okay,” Ye Linghua replied.
After breakfast, Lin Xin was putting on her shoes at the door. She turned to Ye Linghua. “I’ve been taking music lessons at the company, so Sister Meng hasn’t asked you to come. But now that I’m about to record, she’ll bring you to the company these next couple of days so you can get familiar with it.”
Ye Linghua nodded. Lin Xin paused, then asked again, “Are you sure you want to be my personal assistant?”
“Yes,” Ye Linghua replied.
Lin Xin smiled faintly and didn’t say anything more, only, “Then from now on, let’s go to work together.”
“Okay,” Ye Linghua said.
Lin Xin gave her one last look, smiled, and turned to leave.
