- Chapter 10 - A Misunderstanding?
The ward door swung open again, Lu Lingzhi’s face practically screaming, “This Young Lady is very displeased.” Without so much as a glance at Jiang Mingyue, she snatched up the two large bags of KFC and declared huffily, “I’d rather feed this to stray cats and dogs than give it to you.”
This was her final stand for her dignity.
“Wait a moment.” Jiang Mingyue threw back the covers and caught Lu Lingzhi’s wrist. Just as Lu Lingzhi was about to shake her off, she noticed the infusion patch still stuck to the back of Mingyue’s hand; the faint blue veins were visible beneath her pale, translucent skin.
Lu Lingzhi’s movements stiffened. She glared at her with annoyance. “Jiang Er, what do you want? Your brother is so great, why don’t you change your emergency contact to him? Let him come stay with you.”
Jiang Er the nickname Lu Lingzhi had given her.
Except, unlike “Lu Er,” this nickname hadn’t spread far and wide.
Jiang Mingyue was the second child of her family, but since she had an older brother, everyone outside referred to her as the Eldest Miss Jiang.
In truth, Lu Er treated her quite well.
Ever since entering the room, she had shared videos with her and fed her chocolates. Even though they hadn’t been in touch for a long time, she had rushed over the moment something happened. And she hadn’t even asked for the hospital fees back.
Looking at that face now, it was as if Jiang Mingyue owed her a lifetime of debts.
“Don’t be angry anymore. I said the wrong thing just now.” She gave Lu Lingzhi’s wrist a gentle shake, her tone bordering on coaxing. “Your sister is the best sister in the world. She dotes on you the most.”
Ironically, this bit of flattery only made Lu Lingzhi more upset.
“She dotes on me?” Lu Lingzhi let out a cold laugh. “With which eye did you see that? She’s so dismissive of me.”
Lu Er was the type who believed only she was allowed to scold or bully her sister. No one else was permitted.
However, you also couldn’t lie through your teeth and claim her sister was a saint. From Lu Er’s perspective, her sister was a miser who wouldn’t give her money.
Lu Lingzhi looked down at Jiang Mingyue. Under the warm yellow light, Mingyue’s thick, long eyelashes drooped like butterfly wings, casting small shadows on her fair cheeks and hiding the emotions in her eyes.
That posture held a sort of submissive vulnerability. A spark of inspiration hit Lu Lingzhi, and she asked, “Jiang Mingyue, are you trying to make me happy?”
Jiang Mingyue lowered her head a bit further. “Yes.”
Good, you agreed.
The corners of Lu Lingzhi’s mouth curled into a mischievous, slightly vengeful arc.
Fine, you want to make me happy? Then I won’t be polite.
She reached out her hand with total entitlement. “Give me Young Master Jiang’s Black Card.”
You want to show off your superiority? Fine. Once I have that Black Card, I’ll swipe it every time I step out the door.
I’ll max out that “beast in a suit’s” card.
She told herself this was “robbing the rich to help the poor.” She didn’t feel a shred of guilt in fact, if it caused a fight between the siblings, all the better.
Before the words had even finished hanging in the air, Lu Lingzhi’s hand darted out like lightning toward Jiang Mingyue’s clothes. Jiang Mingyue clearly hadn’t expected her to actually try to snatch it; she instinctively turned her body to block and moved her hands to protect herself.
“Lu Er!”
“Give it to me!”
Clatter.
A thin card was tugged out and fell onto the soft carpet.
It wasn’t the metallic, shimmering symbol of supreme wealth she had imagined. It was a delivery rider card with a giant food delivery platform logo and a rider ID number printed on it.
“You lied to me again,” Lu Lingzhi said, turning to walk out.
“Wait!” Jiang Mingyue panicked, ignoring her disheveled clothes. Her voice carried a hint of a sob. “I really do envy you for having a sister. Your sister studies abroad, but she calls you every other day for fear you’ll be mistreated. My brother… he’s not good to me. We just act like we’re close in public. If he were actually good to me, why wouldn’t I put his name as my emergency contact?”
Lu Lingzhi stopped in her tracks and looked back at her.
The tears didn’t win Lu Lingzhi’s pity; instead, she gave a light laugh.
“Jiang Mingyue, I never thought you were this kind of person. He’s not good to you? To protect you, he took a literal slap to the face from my sister.”
The air froze for a moment.
Images from memory began to resurface…
Lu Lingzhi had looked like a fluttering butterfly back then, holding her skirt and spinning in a light, graceful circle, shedding a trail of fine brilliance. She stopped in front of Lu Ningzhi, tilting her head slightly. Her eyes, already as bright as stars, were practically glowing. “Sis, do I look good? And look at my new hair!”
Her side-swept bangs hung playfully over her smooth forehead, accentuating her radiant beauty so much that it was impossible to look away.
Lu Ningzhi was lounging lazily in the soft sofa, propping her chin on one hand. she teased on purpose: “Is the Second Miss going to a royal banquet? It’s just a high school coming-of-age ceremony. Is all this pomp necessary?”
Lu Lingzhi blushed. “Oh, stop teasing me. Jiang Er told me she’s going to give me a ‘pigeon egg’ sapphire tonight and beg me not to block her anymore.”
She looked at her sister expectantly. “Sis, do you think she’ll keep her word this time?”
Lu Ningzhi picked up her flower tea and took a sip before speaking slowly, her tone playful and analytical: “From a personal emotional standpoint,” she held up one finger, “Jiang Er…”
“You’re not allowed to call her Jiang Er! I have the trademark rights! Only I can call her that.”
Trademark rights?
“…Fine. This Eldest Miss Jiang didn’t she vow to give up the School Beauty title to you? And what happened? You weren’t chosen in your junior or senior year. What does she take our Second Miss for?”
Lu Lingzhi nodded repeatedly. She lifted her chin haughtily. “She always lies to me. She’s the world’s biggest liar.”
You know she lies to you, yet you still rush to her side.
And you dressed up so beautifully. If my sister were an Alpha, she and Jiang Mingyue would actually be a great match.
The bright, haughty younger sister and the cold, scholarly school beauty.
Kind of sweet.
I almost want to ship them.
“But,” Lu Ningzhi continued, “credit where it’s due. Our Second Miss has copied her homework for twelve years and eaten for free at her family’s hotels for just as long. Of course, as a world class, super beautiful Omega, the Second Miss has a heart as vast as the ocean and naturally won’t hold a grudge.”
“Considering she’s giving you a sapphire worth millions, you can forgive her. But you must maintain your stance. Let her know that a little princess isn’t that easily coaxed.”
“Exactly.” Lu Lingzhi waited a few seconds, and seeing her sister had stopped, she prodded, “And?”
“From the perspective of group interests, your personal grudges are nothing. Our family’s cooperation with the Jiang family is about to expire. If you stay on good terms with the Eldest Miss Jiang and get her to give us a discount, you’ll be the great hero of our family. Then you can continue to eat and drink at the Jiangs’ for free. Sister won’t let you work for nothing; I’ll give you a ‘pigeon egg’ too. Think of it as a contribution to your dream of becoming a billionaire, okay?”
“Oh, stop!” Lu Lingzhi immediately covered her ears. “You’re so annoying, I’m ignoring you.”
Lu Ningzhi reached out and pinched her pouting cheek. “I’m done teasing. Just follow your heart.”
Lu Lingzhi said, “Jiang Er said this year’s school wide coming of age ceremony is being held at her family’s hotel. She wants to be alone with me for an hour. Is it okay if I want to go to Boston with her for university?”
Lu Ningzhi said, “Okay.”
“You agreed to let me go to Boston!” Lu Lingzhi hugged her excitedly, nearly knocking them both to the floor. “Oh, you’re the best sister ever!”
“Mua! Sending you a flying kiss!” Lu Lingzhi drew a string of hearts in the air.
The noise of the coming of age banquet gradually faded.
A waiter approached: “Second Miss Lu, our young lady requests your presence in her room.”
But when the door opened…
The person standing in the room was actually the eldest Young Master Jiang.
