After the Sickly Beauty Was Haunted by an Evil God - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Lin Yu had a special constitution and had always avoided getting close to outsiders. Even with the roommates he had lived with for a year, he rarely had physical contact, let alone with someone he had just met.
But this new roommate had woken him from a nightmare the moment he arrived, causing him to feel an indescribable sense of goodwill toward the man.
He stared blankly at that large hand with distinct joints before quickly reaching out his own.
Having just had his mouth stuffed by that thing and struggling violently, a faint blush—rare for him—had bloomed on his pale cheeks. Crystal-clear beads of sweat permeated his brow and the tip of his nose, adding a few touches of vivid beauty to his appearance.
He Chen stood by the bed like that, his eyes dark and heavy, waiting for him with a smile on his lips.
Lin Yu struggled to lean his upper body out from the top bunk to grasp the other man’s hand. His slender, soft fingers held the other’s; his sweat-damp palm lightly brushed against the slightly cool, large hand before they parted instantly.
He Chen’s eyes narrowed abruptly, and his long, handsome fingers trembled almost imperceptibly.
It was as if he were exerting extreme effort to restrain something.
“Hello, I’m Lin Yu.” Unfortunately, Lin Yu did not notice this abnormality. After speaking, his gaze swept around the room.
He Chen seemed to guess what he was thinking and took the initiative to explain: “The others must have gone out. I just arrived as well.”
“En.” Lin Yu pulled back the quilt, intending to go down and take another shower. It was only when he looked down that he realized the collar of his pajamas had been pulled almost to his shoulder.
The unrestrained actions of that thing in his dream flashed through his mind. He bit his lower lip hard and pulled his collar back with a somewhat rough motion.
As that snowy-white, lovely shoulder was hidden by the pajamas, He Chen’s pupils contracted in an undetectable way.
The bathroom door closed, and the sound of the shower spray was clearly audible. He Chen slowly turned around, brought his palm close to his nose, and sniffed carefully.
A very faint, ethereal fragrance lingered on it—left behind when Lin Yu had shaken his hand.
The corners of his lips slowly curled up into a smile that could be described as joyful, yet his handsome face suddenly took on an indescribable eeriness.
After a while, the two roommates who had gone to buy food returned.
Li Yanchen, carrying a bag of food in one hand, shouted in a booming voice: “Xiao Yu, come quick—eh? Why is there an extra person?”
He Chen was tidying his bed. Hearing the voice, he turned his head: “Hello.”
“Holy sh!t!” Li Yanchen was startled. “Brother, did you walk into the wrong room?”
“I didn’t.” He Chen turned and replied calmly, “I just moved in today.”
“Oh, oh, oh! Welcome, welcome!” Li Yanchen reacted and welcomed the new roommate very enthusiastically. “I was afraid I wouldn’t get used to suddenly having one less person!”
In total contrast to his attitude, Wei Shu stared at the new roommate for several moments before returning to his seat without expression.
Li Yanchen put down the lunch boxes and introduced himself: “I’m Li Yanchen, the oldest in our dorm. He’s Wei Shu, ranked second. And Lin Yu—have you seen Lin Yu?”
“I have.” He Chen pointed toward the bathroom. “He’s taking a shower.”
“Heh, Xiao Yu is just like that—loves being clean!” Li Yanchen couldn’t help but complain. “We’re all Computer Science majors; you should be too, right?”
“No.” He Chen smiled. “I study Law.”
“My apologies, my apologies!” Li Yanchen cupped his hands. “No wonder I thought you looked handsome in a righteous way!”
He Chen smiled, neither confirming nor denying.
Just then, Lin Yu pushed open the bathroom door and walked out with a head of damp black hair.
Li Yanchen had brought him dinner. He sat at the desk and snapped apart the disposable chopsticks.
Just as he was about to eat, he sensitively perceived a gaze behind him that could not be ignored. He couldn’t help but turn his head to look.
He Chen was propping up his long legs, leaning against the bed while watching him.
Lin Yu looked puzzled: “Is something wrong?”
“No.” He Chen’s gaze shifted upward. “I noticed your hair is very wet. It’s easy to catch a cold with the air conditioning on.”
Lin Yu felt the new roommate had a point; he truly couldn’t afford to get sick again. He stood up to look for his hairdryer in the storage locker.
In the entire dorm, he was the only one with a hairdryer. The others occasionally borrowed it. The last person to use it was likely Li Yanchen, who had placed it on the topmost shelf.
Among Southerners, he wasn’t considered short, but he clearly couldn’t compare to a genuine Northerner like Li Yanchen.
Frowning, he stood on his tiptoes to reach for it. After several failed attempts, he got a little annoyed and raised his voice slightly: “Li Yanchen, come here—”
Just as he turned around, he unexpectedly bumped into a wall of flesh.
“Ah…” He let out a low cry, instinctively looking up, and heard a muffled groan from above.
He quickly backed away until his thin back pressed against the locker, creating distance between them: “Why didn’t you make a sound?”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” He Chen rubbed the bridge of his nose and explained good-naturedly, “I just wanted to help you grab the hairdryer.”
He was very tall, with a handsome look that carried a sense of distance. But when he looked down at the person before him, the pair of pitch-black pupils beneath his long lashes appeared focused and gentle.
Lin Yu finally realized he had misunderstood the new roommate. He bit his lip awkwardly: “It’s fine. Just don’t be so quiet next time.”
“Okay.” He Chen agreed. Stretching out a long arm, he easily grabbed the hairdryer and handed it to him.
“Thank you.” Lin Yu took the hairdryer, tilting his chin slightly in acknowledgment.
He Chen smiled again and took two steps back: “Dry your hair.”
Amidst the “buzzing” of the hairdryer, Lin Yu thought to himself that this new roommate seemed very easy to get along with. Not only had he rescued him from a nightmare, but he was also enthusiastic enough to help him with the hairdryer.
After drying his hair, Lin Yu still felt a bit bad about it and couldn’t help asking: “Does your nose hurt from the bump?”
He Chen turned to look at him. After the two shared a moment of eye contact, he shook his head: “It doesn’t hurt. Don’t worry about such a small thing.”
Before going to bed, after thinking it over, Lin Yu sent a message to his father.
There were many things to do at the start of the semester, and in the blink of an eye, over half a month had passed.
Ever since being woken from a nightmare by his new roommate that day, Lin Yu hadn’t dreamed of that thing again for these past two weeks.
That night, he had given his father a general summary of the situation, omitting the part where the thing humiliated him in the dream, only saying that He Chen had woken him up.
Lin Zhengyang was both surprised and delighted, immediately ordering people to investigate this He Chen’s background.
However, the results of the investigation gave him a shock.
The He family had been in business for generations and was considered a prominent local family. Currently, the person in power was the eldest son, He Xiangming, while He Chen was his illegitimate son, raised outside since childhood and only brought back to the He family two years ago.
Strangely, from that point on, the He family began to encounter one accident after another.
However, Lin Zhengyang didn’t care about that. He calculated He Chen’s Bazi and actually found it to be a fate of ‘Great Ill Omen’—a destiny for an early death.
Yet the man was currently alive and well. Perhaps by chance, he had a special constitution that could resist the evil spirit in Lin Yu’s dreams, or perhaps it had been entirely accidental at the time.
As for which it was, they would have to wait for an opportunity to verify.
Having lived in peace for another half month, the first holiday after the start of school—the National Day Golden Week—arrived.
The night before the holiday, Dorm 306 was quite lively.
Li Yanchen chattered incessantly, not caring if anyone responded, sounding like he was performing a comedic monologue by himself.
He Chen would occasionally respond to him, and Li Yanchen would then drag him into talking about everything under the sun, acting as if they were old friends who had met late in life.
It was almost Lin Yu’s bedtime. He was getting a headache from the noise and couldn’t help but glare at the person on the opposite bed.
Receiving his silent condemnation, He Chen let out a low chuckle and interrupted Li Yanchen: “I’m a bit tired. Shall we chat more next time when we’re free?”
Li Yanchen finally stopped, smacking his lips with lingering interest: “Then I’m turning off the lights, okay!”
Once the lights were out, the moonlight from the balcony poured in, making everything in the dorm look dim and hazy.
Lin Yu lay back in bed, tucked himself in, and closed his eyes.
In early October, the nights were still a bit sweltering. With several young men living in the dorm who all feared the heat, the air conditioning was still on.
Lin Yu had a poor constitution and couldn’t be exposed to the cold, but in a collective living situation, he couldn’t expect everyone else to cater to him, so he could only use a thicker quilt.
However, the weather was truly annoying. It was hot with the quilt and cold without it, making him toss and turn, unable to sleep.
After a long while, familiar snoring rang out in the dorm, and he finally calmed down.
Just as his consciousness was drifting, a sinister cold wind blew in from the balcony. He shivered from the cold and became wide awake again.
Frowning, Lin Yu instinctively looked toward the balcony.
With that look, his expression instantly changed.
His bed was near the balcony, and he could clearly see a black human figure standing there at some point.
No, that wasn’t a person!
Lin Yu raised his hand to grip the Spirit Jade against his chest, intending to pretend he saw nothing and continue sleeping.
But in the next second, the “person” on the balcony turned their head.
The body remained motionless, but the neck made a “cracking” sound as the head on the shoulders turned 180 degrees, looking at him in an extremely distorted posture.
The fingers gripping the Spirit Jade suddenly tightened. Lin Yu sucked in a breath, his eyes widening in disbelief.
Chen Sensen?
How could it be him?
Before he could make any reaction, that clean-cut face collapsed before his eyes at a speed visible to the naked eye.
The forehead caved in, two hollow blood-pits appeared where the eyes should be, and the bridge of the nose was snapped. The entire face looked like a bloody mess of a meat patty crushed by a steamroller; blood and flesh fell down in wet chunks.
“Ah—” Lin Yu couldn’t control himself and let out a scream.
“Lin Yu?” A deep, magnetic voice rang out. He Chen immediately flipped over and jumped down from his bed: “What happened?”
“There’s… there’s…” Lin Yu lowered his head and covered his face, his voice shaking so much he couldn’t form words.
Since he was a child, he had seen many ghosts. Most were terrifying in shape, and quite a few had their intestines hanging out. Although he would feel fear and disgust every time he saw them with his own eyes, he had long forced himself to learn to ignore them.
However, this time, he could no longer control his terror.
The ghost standing on the balcony was his classmate, appearing before him with such a horrific deathly appearance.
He Chen stood by the bed, his large hand gripping Lin Yu’s arm and giving it a reassuring squeeze. He asked in a low voice: “What is there?”
Lin Yu raised a trembling hand and pointed toward the balcony: “On the balcony, there’s…”
He Chen looked toward the balcony with a tight frown; except for a few pieces of hanging laundry, there was nothing.
With a “click,” the overhead light was switched on.
The other two roommates were also startled awake. Li Yanchen poked his head out and asked: “What is it? What happened?”
Lin Yu lifted his face. The bloody ghost had vanished, as if the horrific scene had just been his hallucination.
“I know! You must have mistaken the clothes drying on the balcony!” Li Yanchen realized, saying in a teasing tone, “Xiao Yu, you’re still so easily scared!”
The roommates had discovered long ago that Lin Yu would never sleep alone in the dorm; others had to be present.
Lin Yu didn’t know how to explain his Yin-Yang eyes to these college students, let alone that the ghost he just saw was their classmate. He simply buried his face back into his palms: “It’s nothing…”
The other two went back to sleep. After He Chen confirmed again that he was okay, he returned to his own bed.
After a long while, Lin Yu lifted his face bit by bit, only to lock eyes with those hollow, bloody sockets again.
This time he struggled to swallow his scream, only letting out a low “wu” sound.
“Lin Yu?” A low-whispered call immediately came from the opposite bed.
In just a second, the balcony returned to normal.
Only then did Lin Yu remember that this person likely had a special constitution. He silently climbed down from his bed, walked to the opposite side with light steps, and asked quietly: “Tonight… can I sleep with you?”
In the darkness, an excited crimson flash suddenly appeared in those ink-like eyes, only to be submerged by blackness in an instant.
He Chen turned his face, his voice gentle enough to drip water: “What’s wrong? Still scared?”
“En…” Lin Yu gave a soft hum, emphasizing in a tiny voice, “I’ll only take up a small part of your bed.”
He Chen didn’t answer immediately, appearing to be considering the truth of his words.
Lin Yu’s heart was suspended, feeling a bit apprehensive.
Although He Chen was a good person and very gentle to him, they had only known each other for a month after all. It didn’t seem like a roommate relationship was good enough to share a bed…
His thin shoulders slumped as if deflated. Just as he was about to give up, that pleasant voice that had once rescued him from a nightmare rang out again: “Come up.”
