- Chapter 62 - Can’t I Sleep Alone for Once?
Shame burned through her so fiercely it felt impossible to contain. She couldn’t help but dive headfirst into the bushes, letting out a muffled wail—until the shadow of a figure suddenly loomed. She jerked her head up.
It was Yan Run, her lips curved faintly, almost teasing.
Yan Run’s eyes were cool and clear, refined and beautiful in their own quiet way. That was exactly why she was so easy to look at—never tiring, never dull—making one want to be close to her all the time… even to fall asleep beside her every night.
“Yan Run, what kind of love potion have you given your wife? She doesn’t even doubt you about something like this?” Lang Feng gave a cold, exasperated laugh. She straightened up, but faced with the tall, poised
Alpha before her, she found herself completely losing her nerve.
“If I’d known, I’d have regretted meeting you back then,” Yan Run said, locking eyes with her, regret pooling in her gaze. “At the time, I actually thought you were a brave Alpha who stepped in to help out of righteousness. Never imagined it was just you acting on a whim to kill some boredom. I really regret not seeing you for who you truly are.”
“Why bother seeing me clearly? This is who I am. What are you gonna do about it?” Lang Feng stepped closer, gripping Yan Run’s collar, as if wanting to lift her up—but her strength failed her.
“I hate you! I hate you!” Lang Feng screamed, her voice breaking with rage.
Yan Run’s lips curved higher. “You hate me? And on what grounds? If anyone should hate someone here, it’s me. People like you belong in hell—did you know that?”
Her eyes bore into Lang Feng’s with biting contempt, a mocking smile tugging at her lips.
Lang Feng froze, dumbstruck, her clenched fists trembling with uncertainty.
Without another word, Yan Run turned on her heel and walked away—just as she had years ago when she’d said, You’re not my friend, and left without looking back.
In Yan Run’s eyes, Lang Feng—so steeped in narcissistic self-delusion—was incapable of empathy. All she could ever feel was the bitterness of being “abandoned,” fueling her resentment toward others, and leading to exactly this moment.
The guests merely treated Lang Feng’s appearance as a passing joke. Since Miss Yu didn’t seem to mind, none of them dared speculate further.
They returned to cheerfully congratulating Lin Chuyin. From the sidelines, Yu Wenxi and Yan Run watched, still shaken, though relieved that Lang Feng’s antics hadn’t truly affected them. Yan Run dismissed her as a lunatic who could no longer touch her life in any meaningful way, and so joined in the congratulations with a light heart. By late evening, the guests had all departed.
Lin Chuyin’s expression had grown shadowed. When the last of the visitors left, Gu Zhen approached her with a hesitant, trembling step.
Yu Wenxi and Yan Run had yet to leave.
Yan Run, in no hurry to go, was still simmering with annoyance. Gu Zhen had lied to her too many times, and if she didn’t put her in her place, she’d only keep pushing her luck.
“Did you bring her here? You knew Wenxi is my friend, and her wife is my friend too—so why would you embarrass her like this?” Lin Chuyin frowned, her voice sharp with accusation.
Gu Zhen shook her head quickly. “No, no, sis, listen to me… I didn’t bring her. I have no idea how she even knows my name. Maybe she knows my identity and dragged me into this on purpose!”
Yan Run let out a low, skeptical laugh. “Oh? And that’s not a lie?”
The pointed retort thickened the air with tension.
Yu Wenxi, sensing things were about to spiral, was about to pull Yan Run away when Yan Run said, loud and clear, “I’ve seen her imprison a pregnant woman before.”
“Shut up!” Gu Zhen suddenly shouted, her voice harsh and raw.
Lin Chuyin’s expression darkened further. Yu Wenxi immediately tugged Yan Run’s hand. “It’s late. Let’s go home.”
She cast Yan Run a look of reproach as they turned to leave.
Once they were gone, Lin Chuyin said coldly, “You should go too.”
Gu Zhen stared at her, wide-eyed. “What?”
“This is my home. I want to sleep. You can leave now.” Lin Chuyin said.
“But… sis, we’ve slept together before…”
“Can’t I sleep alone for once?” Lin Chuyin fixed her with a disappointed, guarded look.
She feared Gu Zhen still hid secrets from her. She no longer felt she could see through this Alpha. To her, Gu Zhen had always appeared to be obedient, attentive, eager to please—but now she wondered if it had all been an illusion.
“I said you can go.” Lin Chuyin rose, her voice heavy with disappointment toward the Alpha she had once been close to.
Gu Zhen’s eyes reddened in disbelief. “But you just told them I’m your girlfriend…”
“That was just so they wouldn’t keep asking questions. Don’t… don’t cry.”
Tears spilled down Gu Zhen’s cheeks anyway—tears of regret she let Lin Chuyin see.
“Please, sis… don’t leave me. I’m scared. I’m really scared.”
She knew Lin Chuyin’s greatest weakness was seeing her cry. She believed if she played the pitiful card hard enough, Lin Chuyin would forgive her.
But she was wrong. Lin Chuyin only frowned, weary and unconvinced, her doubts about Gu Zhen still firmly in place.
“Just go. I’m tired.”
“No! Sis, I’m begging you—don’t abandon me. I swear, I’ll be heartbroken!”
“Leave! Butler!” Lin Chuyin saw Gu Zhen moving in to hug her and immediately called for the butler to throw her out. Without another glance, she turned and walked into her bedroom, leaving the Alpha standing there in quiet despair.
That night, Gu Zhen didn’t leave. She sat silently in the Lin family courtyard until dawn. Passersby slowed, whispering at the sight of such a striking Alpha sitting there, unmoving.
Normally, Gu Zhen cared deeply about saving face. But tonight, she ignored the stares, her eyes fixed on that single window. By the time her tears had run dry, her body felt unbearably light—until she finally collapsed.

The next morning, Yu Wenxi answered a call from Lin Chuyin. After a brief exchange, she hung up.
Beside her, Yan Run slid an arm around her, lazily stroking her as she asked, “What did Chuyin call you for?”
Yu Wenxi rubbed her temples. “What else? It’s Gu Zhen… She sat outside the Lin house all night. By morning, her body gave out and she fainted. Chuyin saw her, got soft-hearted, and had her taken to the hospital.”
Yan Run gave a low “Oh,” a flash of satisfaction in her eyes.
So much for Chuyin’s feelings for her.
“She also asked me… what kind of person Gu Zhen really is. Even she doesn’t seem sure anymore.”
Yan Run snorted. “What else could she be? Two-faced. Looks all pure and obedient on the outside, but inside, she’s a cunning, scheming Alpha.”
Yu Wenxi frowned. “What did you mean by her ‘imprisoning a pregnant woman’?”
Yan Run made a small noise, realizing that with Gu Zhen already suffering, repeating it now might be in poor taste—not to mention she’d already promised to let it go.
“I just made that up,” she said lightly.
Yu Wenxi arched a brow but didn’t press further. “Forget it. Let’s go check in on Chuyin.”
Yan Run nodded, got ready, and drove Yu Wenxi to see her.
Lin Chuyin’s mood was still low. Yu Wenxi stayed close, offering quiet comfort.
But she was tougher than Yan Run had expected. She said she wanted to break up with Gu Zhen—and keep it that way forever.
“Which hospital is she in?” Yan Run asked.
Yu Wenxi shot her a glare. That question alone reeked of trouble. Yan Run only shrugged innocently, as if it was an idle query.
Lin Chuyin, not wanting to seem evasive, finally said, “Burton Hospital. I’ve already sent the butler to watch over her… She’s probably awake by now.”
Yan Run gave another quiet “Oh.”
Yu Wenxi could tell Chuyin’s feelings were conflicted. Outwardly, she seemed calm, but deep down, there was still a fire burning. After all, she had been willing to openly call Gu Zhen her girlfriend in front of others—that meant she had liked her at least somewhat.
“You stay with Chuyin,” Yu Wenxi told Yan Run. “I’ll keep her company.”
Yan Run nodded—she had other plans anyway.
Once outside, she headed straight for her car, a small smile tugging at her lips. She was going to see Gu Zhen… and enjoy the sight of her misery.
In the hospital, Gu Zhen lay in bed. When she woke to find no trace of Lin Chuyin, she feigned unbearable pain, though every test came back clean.
It was all an act—just to make Lin Chuyin worry enough to come see her, to prove that, deep down, Lin Chuyin still cared.
“I’m in so much pain… my heart hurts so much… what do I do? Please… could you tell my sister for me?” Gu Zhen pleaded, looking desperately at the butler, who was momentarily at a loss.
“Calm down.”
“I can’t calm down!” Tears streamed down Gu Zhen’s face as she cried out, moaning and begging the butler to look at her pitiful state—pleading for him to call Lin Chuyin over.
“It really hurts… it feels like my heart is being torn apart…” Her perfectly timed performance left the butler completely flustered. In the end, he had no choice but to call Lin Chuyin.
“Miss, she wants you to come see her. She looks like she’s in great pain, and even the doctor can’t figure out what’s wrong. She… she just wants you to see her.”
Lin Chuyin hadn’t muted her phone, so Yu Wenxi overheard the conversation and frowned slightly.
According to Yan Run, Gu Zhen’s behavior was nothing more than an act to gain sympathy—hoping to lure Lin Chuyin into meeting her.
Perhaps she also wanted to test whether Lin Chuyin still had feelings for her.
Clearly, Lin Chuyin thought of the same thing.
After a brief silence, she let out a soft sigh and said coldly, “I won’t see her.”
With that, she hung up.
And on the hospital bed, Gu Zhen heard Lin Chuyin’s indifferent voice loud and clear.
Her cries stopped abruptly.
The butler froze and looked over, only to see Gu Zhen lying quietly on the bed, eyes wide open.
She was still breathing, but her gaze was filled with desolation.
“Does she really not want to see me?” Gu Zhen asked suddenly.
The butler knew well how much Gu Zhen liked Lin Chuyin. Every time she came, it was for her. Even if Lin Chuyin wasn’t home, she would quietly wait until she returned.
Once, he had asked her if she truly liked the young lady.
Gu Zhen had smiled faintly—of course she did. It wasn’t just like; it was love. A love that would last a lifetime.
The butler sighed. “Miss Gu, you—”
“Please leave,” Gu Zhen interrupted, her voice weak.
Knowing her temperament, he didn’t dare linger, slipping out quietly.
Gu Zhen kept staring at the shadows of the trees outside the window. Her chest felt hollow—so this was what heartbreak felt like?
She remembered how, as a child, she’d been beaten countless times by Gu Qingyun. Every time, she would cry alone in secret, sometimes sneaking out to weep under a tree in a small courtyard.
Until one day, a girl appeared, and she forgot how to cry.
The girl asked, “Why are you crying?”
She hadn’t known how to answer.
The girl took out a clean handkerchief and gently wiped her pale cheeks. Her voice was as soft and sweet as spring water, intoxicating in its gentleness.
“Don’t cry, little one. Don’t cry. Big sister will give you candy, okay?”
Looking at that gentle girl, Gu Zhen felt as if she had found her only ray of hope.
“Big sister, do you live here?”
“That’s right. And you?”
Gu Zhen pointed to a large house in the distance. “What about you?” Her eager tone betrayed how badly she wanted to know where this girl lived—so she could see her again.
The girl smiled. “Me? I live over there.”
Gu Zhen looked in the direction she pointed. It was so close to her own home. How had she never noticed her before?
“Big sister, you wouldn’t mind if I came to visit you, would you?” she asked, almost pleading.
The girl didn’t refuse—or perhaps she simply couldn’t refuse someone as pitiful as Gu Zhen.
“Of course you can,” the girl said, ruffling her hair. “But can you tell me why you were crying?”
Gu Zhen stammered, unwilling to admit she’d been crying because her mother had beaten her—afraid the girl would look down on her.
“I… I don’t really know…”
“That’s okay. I’ll stay with you. But you have to promise me you won’t cry anymore, alright?” The girl’s smile was as warm as the sun.
Gu Zhen felt her heart tremble.
A sweetness spread through her chest, like the first morning light breaking through fog and shadows.
Such a gentle, beautiful, and kind girl—surely she would grow up to be an Omega.
And if, by chance, she became an Alpha… that would be even better. Gu Zhen believed she could pursue her, because she was both her vulnerability and her love.

Yan Run arrived at the hospital where Gu Zhen was staying, only to find that visitors had to be registered. If the patient didn’t know you personally, you wouldn’t be let in, even if you gave a name.
After all, Lin Chuyin had arranged for her to stay in a single luxury ward.
Bored out of her mind, Yan Run was about to leave when she spotted a familiar, cold-looking Lang Feng at the clinic entrance.
Lang Feng’s eyes were shadowed, as though she hadn’t slept all night, and her hair was a mess—an unusual sight for someone who normally took great pride in her appearance. Was she here to see Gu Zhen?
Yan Run didn’t want to engage and started to sidestep her.
But Lang Feng spotted her and came running straight toward her.
Yan Run sighed. “So you were looking for me? What do you want?”
Lang Feng said nothing.
Clicking her tongue, Yan Run turned to leave—when suddenly a cold blade drove into her back.
A girl nearby screamed.
Yan Run’s body went rigid, the pain in her lower back flaring sharply. She turned her head just enough to see Lang Feng withdrawing the knife, only to thrust it toward a vital spot.
Still reeling from the first blow, Yan Run nearly lost her life—until someone lunged forward, shielding her, and took the blade to the abdomen instead.
It was only then that Yan Run reacted, kicking Lang Feng away. The woman fell to the floor and was quickly subdued by arriving security guards.
The person who had saved her collapsed along with her from the force of the impact. Blood was pouring from their abdomen.
Yan Run looked down—and saw that it was Gu Zhen.
Lang Feng screamed at Yan Run, “I hate you! I hate you! Why did I ever meet you? Why did you have to be my friend?… I hate you…”
Her voice broke into sobs. Why had she been so foolish? So many people had liked her, yet she had fallen for Yan Run. Why had she acted on those feelings back then? If she hadn’t… maybe they could have stayed friends for life.
But could she really bear to watch Yan Run marry Yu Wenxi, have children, and live happily ever after?
No—she couldn’t.
Her cries turned into a hoarse, desperate scream as she lamented the beauty of what once was.
But the onlookers only saw her as a lunatic and kept their distance.
Security dragged her away as she watched Yan Run and Gu Zhen lying on the floor, bleeding. She couldn’t bear it and shouted, “Treat them! Hurry!”
Doctors and nurses rushed over, taking both injured women away.
The butler, having heard the news, arrived and was stunned at the sight.
He quickly called Lin Chuyin.
