Chapter 3: Picked Up Something and Took It Home
◎ Shen Ying: “You can leave after you finish eating.” ◎
As the car behind was about to ram them for the third time, the bodyguard in the passenger seat quickly turned the steering wheel and, at the same time, stepped on the gas at the turn.
The car drifted sharply and, at a tricky angle, swerved around the car speeding towards them from behind.
Using the moment when the car behind was still making a U-turn, the bodyguard quickly switched seats with the driver.
The driver was already drenched in a cold sweat. While in the passenger seat, he secretly glanced at the rearview mirror.
He happened to make eye contact with Song Zhi, whose lips were curled into a smile.
Song Zhi was smiling lightly, but there was no warmth in her eyes. She looked at the driver, who was almost terrified, raised her index finger, and gently pressed it against her lips.
The driver immediately lowered his head. Thankfully, the bodyguards were all nervously watching the windows, and no one noticed his action.
Song Zhi watched as the car gradually entered the main road.
This area seemed to be a mix of residential and commercial districts.
Besides the main road they were on, the entire area was filled with winding little alleys.
The trees on both sides had become lush, and the traffic and pedestrians on the road had increased slightly.
But this was still the suburbs.
There were still too few people here. If the car behind them really wanted to do something, these people wouldn’t be enough to stop them.
Song Zhi saw the car make another sharp turn and said, “I’m getting out after we make one more turn.”
“Yes.”
Song Zhi: “Later, you drive to TenP and spread the news that I’ve been hiding there all along.”
After the last turn, the car gradually slowed down.
Song Zhi opened the car door a crack, and the wind rushed into the car, causing her hair to fly wildly across her fair collarbones.
She brushed her hair back, found a good spot to land, and then jumped.
The driver could only see Song Zhi’s determined back and her messy hair being blown by the wind. He even saw a hint of joy in her silhouette.
“Miss, did she just jump out?”
Bodyguard: “She’s been trained. She’ll be fine.”
The driver wisely shut his mouth and didn’t ask if she had been trained to jump out of a moving car.
Just as Song Zhi had planned, she landed right at the mouth of an alley.
She didn’t hesitate and immediately walked into the alley.
The alley was narrow and cramped, seemingly only wide enough for three people to walk side-by-side. A car definitely couldn’t get through. But as long as their car was being chased, those people would eventually turn back. She could only hide here.
The alley was very short, only five or six steps to another turn.
At the turn, there was a trash can that was already overflowing. The trash can was half-full, but there was a pile of garbage next to it. It was drizzling, and the garbage was giving off a foul smell as the rain washed over it.
Song Zhi looked at the garbage, and her thoughts raced, as if she had already planned this out.
As she walked past the trash can, she didn’t hesitate to take off the watch on her hand and throw it inside.
When she walked past the pile of garbage, she took off all her earrings and the necklace around her neck, throwing them all inside.
The items were small, and there was so much trash that their shadows disappeared in an instant.
What she didn’t see was that the moment she walked into the alley, an SUV sped out onto the main road.
The SUV, with its intact tinted windows, came charging forward. It was clearly the same car that had been relentlessly chasing them.
Someone in the car turned their head as they passed the alley entrance.
But they didn’t see anything.
After the turn and a little further in, there was another small path just wide enough for one car. The path was full of various crisscrossing small alleys.
In the alleys, row after row of buildings stood in a neat block formation, like a honeycomb.
People constantly came out of the “honeycombs.”
She didn’t dare to hesitate and entered the third alley. Just as she reached the mouth of the alley, her head suddenly felt dizzy, and then her whole body went limp.
Luckily, Song Zhi managed to grab onto the slick wall.
Then her hand on the wall also went limp.
This is not good.
Song Zhi shook her dizzy head. The hand that was holding the wall was white from the excessive force she was using.
She hadn’t eaten in too long, and her blood sugar was low.
Song Zhi clenched her teeth and walked forward again.
No! I absolutely have to keep going. I’m too close to those people right now, and there’s a risk of being discovered at any time.
Just as the bodyguard said, she had indeed arranged for a traffic accident. More than wealth, she wanted freedom.
Xie Chu really understood her. If she could exchange her wealth for freedom, she would definitely do so without hesitation.
However, she knew that with Song Guan’s interference, it was all just a delusion.
But those people weren’t her doing.
This was a different force, people who disliked her, so much so that as soon as Song Guan left, they couldn’t wait to make a move and let her die here.
The rain was getting heavier. Her vision was starting to blur, either from the rain or something else.
It was eerily quiet all around. For a moment, there was only the sound of the rain.
Just then, a person holding a white transparent umbrella came walking from ahead.
The person was holding a phone, with one hand in their pocket, walking straight ahead on the stone pavement. Their steps were light and slow, as if they were afraid of disturbing something.
Song Zhi, being taller and wearing high heels, couldn’t clearly see the person’s face. She could only see their slender figure.
They seemed a little too thin.
There’s no time!
She suddenly took a step forward, right in front of the person. Her body had already reached its limit. She uncontrollably collapsed to the ground, with black spots appearing in her vision.
The moment before she fell, Song Zhi grabbed the person’s sleeve.
Then, in her last glimpse, she seemed to see a pair of icy-cold eyes.
Like a cold spring, they made her shiver all over.
Then her vision could only see the uneven stone pavement in the alley, which reflected her pale face.
Shen Ying’s sleeve and umbrella were pulled down by someone.
Just when she thought this was another person trying to cause trouble, this person fell to the ground in front of her like they were faking an injury.
Shen Ying: “Hey.”
The person’s eyes were tightly shut, and the fine rain continuously hit their fair face.
Shen Ying was decisive, as she had said countless times before: “I don’t have any money.”
Whether it was a scam or an attempt to start a fight, she had no money anyway.
The person lay motionless on the ground, not reacting to her words, letting the cold early spring rain fall on them.
In the 50-degree weather, the person was only wearing a thin shirt, lying on the ground in the rain. Even their lips were a grayish-white, and they looked very pathetic.
Shen Ying stood still, looking at her. Then she re-rolled the cuff of her gray sports jacket, took a step, and walked past the person.
She was just out to buy noodles.
Even the most notorious debtors in this alley wouldn’t try to extort her because she had no money.
She wondered how desperate this person must be to try and pull a scam on her.
The main road from the alley was where the stores were. It was very close, and in just ten minutes, Shen Ying had finished her shopping and came out.
After paying, a message from her advisor popped up.
Shen Ying pursed her light-colored lips, looked at the screen with a cold expression, and finally could only reply.
“It’s fine, whatever. Thank you, professor.”
She brought up the dial pad, ready to call the police.
As soon as she pressed “1,” her phone screen suddenly went black. The battery had died.
At that moment, she found herself making eye contact with her own reflection on the dark screen.
Expressionless, indifferent, as if she didn’t care about anything.
She asked herself, Is it really fine?
But she had gotten used to it, hadn’t she?
Just like before, a golden opportunity, within her grasp, would always be lost for one reason or another.
But this time was different from before. She looked at her advisor’s stuttering words and pieced together a name: Song Zhi.
On the way back in the same alley, she saw the person in the same position as she had ten minutes ago.
The rain had gathered on her clothes and was now flowing from her clothes into a low-lying puddle.
After just ten minutes, her face had become even paler. Her lips were a grayish color.
Shen Ying watched her for a moment, then walked away.
As she rounded the corner, she suddenly turned her head.
The person was lying quietly on the ground.
Her quietness made Shen Ying think of something else.
Gentle, pitiful, fragile, and delicate.
Just pretend it’s real.
Unable to describe the feeling, her heart suddenly softened. Then she turned around and picked up the person.
The person looked thin, but when she picked them up, they had some weight. Fortunately, Shen Ying was used to physical labor from a young age, so carrying the person was easy.
The rain chased after her, but it could only stop at the entrance of the building complex.
Song Zhi was awakened by a scent.
A faint, ethereal scent of food that wafted to her nose.
What smells so good?
She opened her eyes and saw a small room with no secrets.
The sound of the rain and the woman in black who slowly walked out of it gradually came back to her mind.
It seemed she had been rescued by someone.
I’ll have the bodyguard write a check later. I can’t let her save me for free.
She looked around and didn’t see anyone in the living room, which was about one-fifth the size of her bathroom.
Just as she was supporting her dizzy head to stand up, a curtain at the entrance was lifted, and a person slowly walked out.
Song Zhi first saw the person’s hands with their sleeves rolled up resting on the curtain.
The skin on her hands was pale and cold, and her fingers were long and slender.
Then she saw the person’s profile. Her profile was as pale as her hands, and from behind her black hair, a high-bridged nose and faint lips were revealed.
She stared blankly at the person who was slowly walking closer.
Her heart was pounding. She instinctively raised her hand and covered her heart.
The person’s movements were sharp, her whole demeanor was cold, and there was no expression on her face, making her seem a bit distant.
It wasn’t until the person placed a steaming object on the table that she realized the person had a bowl of soup in her hands.
The scent, which she was only now aware of, was inhaled into her nose.
The person raised her faint eyes. Her pupils were clear, and her eye color was a little lighter than others, making her look very cold and indifferent.
The person glanced at Song Zhi, then turned around and went back behind the curtain. This time, she came out with two bowls and two pairs of chopsticks.
This time, Song Zhi understood that this place, which was smaller than her bathroom, also had a kitchen.
The soup on the table, whatever it was, was giving off a wonderful aroma. In the misty steam, the person looked up at her. They were a pair of narrow phoenix eyes.
Then the person lowered her head, filled her bowl with soup, and slowly began to eat.
Song Zhi moved to sit across from her and, imitating her, picked up her bowl. “Is this for me?”
The person didn’t stop her movements and continued to eat her noodles.
Despite getting a cold shoulder, Song Zhi wasn’t discouraged. Instead, a peculiar sense of joy rose in her heart.
She happily said thank you and deliberately made herself sound pitiful. “Thank you. If it weren’t for you, I might have died.”
The person ignored her. Only when she swallowed the last bite of her noodles did she say, “Your phone is on the sofa. I’ve charged it. If you want to thank me, you can just transfer some money.”
Song Zhi: “Huh?”
Shen Ying: “You can leave after you finish eating.”
Song Zhi gripped her chopsticks. In that brief moment, she went through everything that had happened since she left home.
As soon as Song Guan left, she was being chased. It had only been two days since she returned, so where would she have other enemies? The only suspect was her so-called brother.
Now that no one was holding him back, going back would only give him more time to think of new ways to deal with her. There was no benefit to it at all.
And she realized this was a golden opportunity.
With Song Guan away, she was being hunted and had been spotted at TenP. Her brother would definitely try to find her there and wouldn’t even think to look here.
The moment the indifferent person in front of her spoke, a plan had already formed in her mind.
She couldn’t leave.
The person in front of her looked cold and heartless, but what kind of heartless person would rescue a stranger from a rainy alley?
Song Zhi took two seconds to react, then raised her hand and wiped away a tear.
