After the Real Young Miss Became My Canary - Chapter 27
Chapter 27: Accident
It must be this way.
She thought to herself, suppressing her heart’s frantic beating. Just then, something warm suddenly touched her lips.
It was hot, soft, smooth, and it had a faint smell of alcohol. Shen Ying’s eyes widened. Her mind was blank, and she instinctively raised her hand to push the person away.
But Song Zhi reached out and firmly held the back of her neck.
Song Zhi lifted her head from below. She was kneeling on the ground, her head strained upwards, like a fish out of water, about to die, with her back forming a taut arch.
Shen Ying kept backing up, but her path was blocked. She desperately pried at the hand holding her arm, finger by finger. The hand loosened, and Shen Ying subconsciously let out a breath of relief. Just then, a slick, soft tongue took the opportunity to pry her lips open.
…
Shen Ying bit down hard. Song Zhi winced in pain but still stretched her neck, kissing her forcefully until Shen Ying pushed her away with a strong shove.
Slap!
A palm print clearly appeared on her face. Song Zhi’s strength immediately left her. She didn’t care about her face; she just looked at Shen Ying. Her eyes no longer had their usual brightness. She just stared up at Shen Ying blankly, a sense of dejection enveloping her.
Song Zhi’s lips twitched into a smile that was uglier than a cry. Her voice was very soft. “I thought it was another dream. I’m sorry.”
Only after she said that did she realize what she had said. Seeing that she couldn’t hide it, she said, “I’m sorry, Shen Ying. I didn’t… I didn’t mean to kiss you. I just got confused.”
Tears then came rushing out of her eyes.
She suddenly realized she was a despicable person. She didn’t even dare to say “I love you” and could only secretly and quietly show her affection where Shen Ying didn’t know.
Shen Ying took two steps back, putting distance between them. “Okay.”
Did Song Zhi often dream of her? Or of the person she was talking about? Shen Ying couldn’t tell the truth from the lie in these two sentences.
She didn’t know if Song Zhi’s “dreaming often” was another new way of toying with her. She could only go against her own beating heart, which was a very difficult and cruel thing to do. She wanted to look away but felt that looking away was a form of cowardice. So she looked directly at Song Zhi and said flatly, “Since you’re awake, go back.”
She only knew that she couldn’t get hurt anymore, and the only way to achieve that was to stay away from the person in front of her.
Because when she saw this person, her heart couldn’t stop beating, and her adrenaline surged. This was not rational. She hated this feeling of losing control, so she had to stay away.
Song Zhi stared at her without blinking, as if she were lost in thought. She nodded slowly. “Okay.”
Only then did Song Zhi shakily stand up from the sofa, wanting to reach out but grasping at nothing. Shen Ying stood directly opposite her, looking at her coldly. They were only two meters apart, but it felt like they were separated by mountains and seas.
She looked at Shen Ying’s expressionless face and couldn’t help but smile bitterly. “I’m not going to do anything. You don’t need to stand so far away.”
Shen Ying ignored her smile. “The door is over there.”
Song Zhi’s face turned two shades paler. She slowly walked to the door, let out a long breath behind it, and then turned back. She tried her best to force a smile, pretending to be her old self. “Maybe this is the last time we’ll see each other. Could you say goodbye to me?”
She still wanted a possibility.
She was betting on Shen Ying’s soft heart.
Shen Ying said flatly, “Goodbye.”
The two shallow dimples appeared on Song Zhi’s face. She said, “You are so kind.”
Shen Ying found it hard to understand this person’s mind.
If she remembered correctly, she had said “goodbye,” not “I love you,” right?
Having gotten what she wanted, Song Zhi took one last look at Shen Ying. Her eyes were reluctant to leave. As if she had eyes on the back of her head, she accurately placed her hand on the doorknob and slowly opened the door.
Shen Ying let out a sigh of relief, glad that this person who made her lose control was finally leaving and that her life could finally get back on track.
But at the same time, there was an unspeakable sense of loss in her heart.
Song Zhi looked into the dark doorway and took a deep breath. This action seemed to give her the mental preparation she needed. She looked back at Shen Ying. “Good…”
BANG!
A loud noise suddenly erupted. The cabinet in the entryway was even displaced by Song Zhi.
According to her plan, her head and feet should have hit the ground at the same time, but there were two changes.
First, the small shoe cabinet in the entryway blocked her path, and she had a fifty percent chance of falling onto the cabinet.
Second—she looked at the person who rushed toward her the moment she fell, and there was only one thought in her mind.
She had bet correctly.
Shen Ying, who had been paying attention to her, immediately sensed something was wrong. The moment she saw the person swaying backward, she couldn’t care about what would happen if it were a misunderstanding. Her mind went blank, and the calmness she had been constantly reminding herself of completely disappeared. All that was left in her mind was this one person.
Song Zhi’s eyes were tightly shut. Shen Ying didn’t know what was happening and didn’t dare to move. She carefully put her arm around her waist, laid her flat on her knees, and used her fingertip to pinch her philtrum. She was afraid of hurting Song Zhi, so she used the soft pad of her finger, but her hand might have been too strong. Song Zhi’s philtrum instantly turned bright red from her pinch, but there was no sign of her waking up.
Her mind felt like it was on fire at that moment. Logic became fuel, making her mind boil like a pot of freshly cooked porridge.
Shen Ying looked around, trying to find her phone, which was useless except for making calls, to call for an ambulance.
This was the first time she felt that her old flip phone was bad. If it were a smartphone, it would be a big chunk, and she would probably see it as soon as she looked up.
Besides, she heard that smartphones had a small, obedient character inside. You just had to tell it what you wanted it to do, and with that, she wouldn’t have to frantically look for her phone. At this moment, she felt the hand on Song Zhi’s back was very wet. She lifted her hand.
There was a large patch of bright red on her fair palm—it was blood.
It was blood.
Shen Ying repeated these two words in her mind and calmed down a lot. If it was blood, it would be easy to handle.
In reality, this was just what she was telling herself to stay calm. How could Song Zhi have blood on her? What was wrong with her? But this was not her concern. Her job did not include thinking about why Song Zhi, this pampered young lady, was hurt.
It was just like when she was a tutor; her only task was to manage the student’s studies. As for whether the student was in an early relationship or skipping class at school, it was not within her scope of concern.
She picked the person up, and after two seconds of thought, she moved her hand from the waist to the back of the neck.
She carried her to the bed in the bedroom, lifted the clothes on her back, and secretly blamed this person for not taking her body seriously.
The bedroom window faced away from the light, so it was a bit dim. Shen Ying turned on the light in the bedroom. Under the light, Song Zhi’s back looked even more frightening.
The new and old marks were intertwined, and her back was covered with one whip mark after another. Some of the marks had already faded, showing a faint pink color, while others seemed to be newer, with thick scabs on top. The crisscrossing marks on the very top looked as if they had been soaked in water and then retrieved, with water and blood quietly seeping from them.
Shen Ying reached out and touched Song Zhi’s forehead. As expected, her forehead was scorching hot. With those injuries, she still drank. This person must have a death wish.
If she thought a little further and carefully calculated the dates, the faint scabs on her back would have appeared around the time…
…she had picked up Song Zhi.
What on earth had Song Zhi been through?
She remembered Song Zhi saying she was homeless. At the time, she thought it was just an excuse, not to mention that Song Zhi’s later identity confirmed that it was. She even thought it was just Song Zhi mocking her to toy with her, like a person with a happy and complete family telling an orphan that they were not happy and envied the life of not having parents.
But now, she was not so sure.
Maybe she was being too presumptuous, which was a bad thing. She reflected on it again.
She got up to buy medicine. The house only had some very poor medication for bruises and abrasions.
Song Zhi was so concerned about her appearance; it would be better to leave fewer scars.
She woke up in a sweat. Song Zhi stared at the narrow ceiling for a long time, and the memories before she passed out slowly came back.
“Take your medicine.” A bowl of medicine was placed in front of her. The five fingers holding the bowl were long and fair.
She didn’t look at the person but pulled the blanket over her head, covering her face.
When she just woke up, she was covered in sweat. She must not look good right now.
She didn’t want Shen Ying to see her looking unattractive.
A muffled voice came from under the blanket. “I’ll drink it later.”
Shen Ying remembered the person’s bad behavior of secretly not taking her medicine when they first met.
“Drink it now.”
Being muffled by the blanket and having just woken up, Song Zhi’s mind was not working very well. She thought for a moment.
Then she refused in a small voice. “I don’t want to.”
Shen Ying said, “Then go home.”
Song Zhi panicked and pulled the blanket away, revealing a pair of clear, black and white eyes. Her eyes were misty at the moment, and she said pitifully, “I don’t want to.”
Shen Ying said, “Then take your medicine first.”
Song Zhi tried to figure out her tone and expression and found that she was different from a few days ago. She no longer had that cold, distant feeling, although she still looked a bit cold.
As expected, Shen Ying was soft-hearted, just as she had thought.
She also remembered the time at the bar.
At that time, what she told Xie Chu was to get her a bucket of water and a towel.
Then, under Xie Chu’s shocked gaze, she used the wet towel to soak and soften the wound, then peeled off the scab little by little.
Xie Chu was horrified and asked if she had gone crazy. She, on the other hand, felt that she had finally woken up.
Since she was a child, there were very few things she wanted. And the things she wanted, she never got. But as time passed, she didn’t want them as much anymore. But this time, she had never wanted something so much, to the point of being unscrupulous.
She wanted Shen Ying’s love.
She felt that she loved Shen Ying.
Song Zhi was an expert at finding a loophole. “Can you not make me leave?”
Shen Ying said, “Do you think I’m an idiot, Song Zhi?”
Song Zhi put on a pitiful expression again, but she was stubborn and wanted an answer. “Do you hate me because of who I am or because I lied to you?”
Her eyes were as bright as usual, but this time they were full of stubbornness. She desperately wanted an answer. Shen Ying didn’t dare to face her gaze. She was afraid that she would go soft, but she couldn’t. She had to put up a protective shield to protect herself, just like the many times she had been hurt before.
Just like that, she would quickly heal from the hurt so others wouldn’t think she was easy to bully.
Shen Ying said, “To me, there’s no difference, but if I had known who you were earlier, I wouldn’t have brought you home.”
