After the Real Young Miss Became My Canary - Chapter 23
Chapter 23: I Want to Eat Pork Ribs
◎Song Zhi’s eyes were a little sore. She didn’t know what to say. In that moment, she subconsciously said, “I want to eat pork ribs.”◎
The older woman looked at Song Zhi’s expressionless eyes and her gaze, which didn’t seem like a human’s. A chill crawled up her spine, and she shivered, shaking her head in terror.
Song Zhi frowned, a little displeased. “You’re frowning. What does that mean?”
The older woman said, “No, it won’t happen again.”
Song Zhi’s eyebrows curved in satisfaction. She smiled sweetly at the older woman, as if there was no ill will between them. “You have to remember what you said. Otherwise, I don’t know what I’ll do.”
The older woman broke out in a cold sweat. She watched Song Zhi walk away, rooted to the spot, until her daughter-in-law came back from outside.
The daughter-in-law didn’t like her but asked out of politeness, “Mom, why are you sitting by the door? It’s cold.”
The older woman glared at her daughter-in-law, thinking she was being deliberately provocative. She was about to speak, but her teeth chattered.
She couldn’t say a word.
That woman was too scary. She spoke with a subtle threat yet smiled at you as if you were close friends.
Since she said she had just run into someone, she could still go now and might even run into them.
She drove toward the intersection. Since it wasn’t a main road and there were many “idiots” who used it, the two-car-wide path was completely blocked. As one of the idiots, Song Zhi was a little stunned by the four or five cars lined up behind one another. She decided not to be an “idiot” anymore and let those who deliberately came this way take the reputation.
She smoothly backed up, and since there were no cars behind her yet, she quickly reversed down the small road.
She found a wide spot and parked before walking toward the small road without stopping.
The small road was now completely blocked. A red low-slung car and a silver one were side by side, confronting each other on the road, their roaring engines making them sound like two competing beasts. Unsurprisingly, one of the beasts was injured in the struggle.
One of the drivers opened his car door and stood by it, cursing loudly. The burly man, nearly two meters tall and weighing almost two hundred pounds, was so intimidating that other unhappy drivers also suppressed their emotions.
After walking for a few minutes, Song Zhi felt that her choice of outfit was not a wise one.
But giving up halfway wasn’t her style. Since she was already out, she would find the person first. She walked on, struggling in her high heels. When she looked down, the back of her feet were already red from the rubbing of the thick heels. When she looked up again, her peripheral vision caught two figures.
One of the figures was slender and had already passed her, nearing the corner where the traffic was worst.
Song Zhi stopped and turned around.
Zhao Zhongdui said impatiently, “I really like you. Just be with me.”
Shen Ying said coldly, “No. I’ve already given you the money. Give me my phone back.”
Zhao Zhongdui clicked his tongue and muttered “difficult.” “I don’t agree. I wasn’t the one who sold it.”
Shen Ying couldn’t be bothered with him and walked forward quickly. She had already given him the money, and the transaction was complete. She didn’t care whether the male or female half of a young couple sold her the item.
Zhao Zhongdui said, “Look to your left. I prepared something for you.”
Shen Ying walked forward, not shifting her gaze to the side for a moment.
Zhao Zhongdui said impatiently, “Just take a look.”
This person was so troublesome. If it weren’t for her being somewhat pretty, he wouldn’t be begging her like this. At this moment, he thought of Fu Xin, his ex-girlfriend. If she hadn’t sold the phone to Shen Ying, he could have used this to threaten her.
Shen Ying walked quickly, trying to create distance between them. Just then, a familiar figure strode over from the other end of the road. Shen Ying subconsciously turned her head.
Seeing that he had finally gotten a reaction, Zhao Zhongdui felt a little smug.
Shen Ying looked over and saw the figure was tall, a wisp of her curly hair hanging down to her chest. Her lips were curved in a smile, and her posture was gracefully perfect. A structured coat clung to her body, and as she walked, it brought a gust of wind. Behind her, a noisy crowd and constant honking cars served as a backdrop.
In that moment, Shen Ying saw nothing but her.
As soon as Song Zhi saw Shen Ying, her eyes curved into a smile. She stared at Shen Ying with shining eyes and then asked casually, “Shen Ying, who is this?”
Song Zhi knew he was the person from the movie theater, but she wanted to hear Shen Ying distance herself from him. She didn’t believe that with Shen Ying’s personality, the two of them could be close.
To her surprise, Shen Ying asked a question in return. “Why are you here?”
Song Zhi was a little unhappy. Her smiling eyes immediately drooped, and she mumbled sorrowfully, “I came to find you, and you’re not happy. You don’t care about me, and the first thing you ask is why I came. Can’t I come?”
Her eyes seemed to have a fire in them, burning Shen Ying so much that she couldn’t meet her gaze.
Zhao Zhongdui, whose prepared gift was supposed to make Shen Ying happy, was a little anxious. “Behind you, look behind you first before you talk.”
Shen Ying followed his gaze and looked behind Song Zhi.
Song Zhi stared at Zhao Zhongdui unhappily and mouthed a message to him coldly: “Your tongue.”
Zhao Zhongdui suddenly remembered what she had said last time.
If he didn’t want his tongue anymore, she could help.
It was Song Zhi’s naked threat.
Behind Song Zhi, two men stood in front of the two cars that were side by side. One of the men was very muscular and was currently holding the other man’s collar.
Shen Ying was puzzled. Just then, the muscular man punched the other man, who was a head shorter, in the face. His face was twisted to the side by the blow. Shen Ying saw his face—it was the electrician.
It was also the man who had followed her in the middle of the night.
Zhao Zhongdui said proudly, “How is it? Isn’t this a good gift?”
Shen Ying’s voice was flat. “Song Zhi, what do you think?”
Song Zhi turned to look at Zhao Zhongdui and smiled. She thought to herself, “Compared to this person from who knows where, Shen Ying still cares about me more.”
The smile sent a shiver down Zhao Zhongdui’s spine, and he didn’t dare to express his displeasure.
Song Zhi smiled sweetly, staring intently at Shen Ying. “I like the gift very much. Thank you.”
Zhao Zhongdui said, “It’s not for you. Why do you like it?”
Song Zhi smiled. “I have something to say to Shen Ying. Can you leave first?” She stared at Zhao Zhongdui, her eyes full of pressure. The warning was unmistakable. Zhao Zhongdui felt as if a beast was staring at his lifeblood, and under that gaze, he was a little scared.
Shen Ying said coldly, “By what right do you speak for me?” Realizing her words might be inappropriate, she added, “Do you need to talk to me about something?”
When she said this, Song Zhi cautiously took a step to the side. The position was right in front of Zhao Zhongdui. She squeezed in, completely blocking him, and then pursed her lips, pitifully raising her eyebrows before lowering her head and muttering, “I can’t open my door at home.”
She seemed to be mumbling quietly, but her voice was loud enough for the two people nearby to hear clearly.
At least Zhao Zhongdui heard it clearly. He met Song Zhi’s gaze and clearly saw the intention in her eyes. He suddenly realized. No wonder Shen Ying was so unmoved. It was because she was the wrong gender.
Shen Ying said, “Why did you come to find me?”
Song Zhi was dumbfounded.
Was there a reason for this?
Song Zhi’s eyes quickly turned red. “I just wanted to find you, is that not allowed? Is it because of him?”
Shen Ying said, “It’s not because of anyone. We’re not close at all.”
She said it so coldly, no longer indulging Song Zhi like she had before, but cruelly revealing the reality in front of her.
It was so blatant.
Song Zhi didn’t have to pinch her thighs this time. Her eyes turned red without any external force. She said, “I thought we were friends.”
“I thought so, too,” Shen Ying said flatly. “I’ve never had a friend. You are the only one.”
She thought that since the words had been said, Song Zhi should know what she had done. Even if she wasn’t guilty, she shouldn’t pretend to like her so much and continue this entanglement.
She would take it seriously.
But Song Zhi was completely unaware.
The next moment, Song Zhi subconsciously grabbed her sleeve.
That feeling of panic returned, but as many times before, she couldn’t find the reason for her fear. Her heart just inexplicably beat faster, like drumbeats, one after another, pounding in her ears. Her hand felt weak.
Song Zhi could only weakly grab Shen Ying’s sleeve. She always felt that in the next moment, Shen Ying would disappear.
Shen Ying looked down at the hand on her sleeve. She could have easily dodged it when the hand reached out, but remembering Song Zhi’s watery eyes, the hand that was supposed to move away stopped in place.
Since it had come to this, there was no point in doing anything else, so Shen Ying let her hand rest on her sleeve.
Shen Ying’s lips curled into a smile. She was naturally beautiful, but the coldness she carried often created a sense of isolation.
Now, this smile was like a smashed glass barrier, revealing her beautiful features up close. That unadorned and uncarved beauty instantly came into full view.
Song Zhi was stunned, staring blankly at her features and her slightly raised lips. She was so captivating, like the coldest statue in the Guanghan Palace that had come to life.
Song Zhi smiled, but in Shen Ying’s eyes, her smile looked foolish. “Are you happy now?”
The next moment, Shen Ying said coldly, “I’ve already thrown your things away.”
She was smiling, but her eyes seemed to hold a hint of mockery.
The blade finally fell, and Song Zhi was shattered. Her heart swelled up.
Her voice was hoarse. “Why?”
Shen Ying’s voice sounded light as she let out a long breath. “‘The pursuit of a beautiful thing is difficult,’ and it is indeed difficult. Song Zhi, is it fun to toy with people?”
Boom!
Song Zhi’s heart was punctured, and the swollen sac leaked sour liquid that flooded her throat.
She opened her mouth hoarsely. “Listen to me.”
She picked up her scattered brain from the messy ground and put it back on her body.
After she said that, her mind was blank. She felt like she had put her brain on backward.
She felt a little sad.
Because her heart felt so sour, and her hands were weak.
But maybe her weak hands were from low blood sugar and hunger.
So she said, “Shen Ying.”
Shen Ying responded softly.
She knew that it wasn’t because she was the one who spoke, it was because someone was talking.
She was no longer special.
Just like she was no longer the unique rose on the unique planet but one of thousands in a garden.
Song Zhi’s eyes were a little sore. She didn’t know what to say. In that moment, she subconsciously said, “I want to eat pork ribs.”
