After the Real Young Miss Became My Canary - Chapter 14
Chapter 14: A Strange Little Shen
“Thanks a lot.”
Song Zhi’s eyes curved into a smile, and she looked at the tickets with sparkling eyes. “Wow, movie tickets! I haven’t seen a movie in a long time. How did you know I wanted to see one?”
Shen Ying emphasized, “Someone just gave them to me.”
Song Zhi didn’t seem to get the point and just kept smiling at her.
Song Zhi’s eyes were on the rounder side, and when she smiled, they were very moist and watery, making her look very cute.
Shen Ying was so affected by her smile that she turned her head away, not daring to look at her.
After lunch, Song Zhi began to look impatient, and because of this, Shen Ying seemed to be in a much better mood.
If you were to ask Song Zhi how she knew, it was entirely based on feeling.
Song Zhi didn’t actually love watching movies, but when Shen Ying stood in front of her, she had only one thought:
She couldn’t let Shen Ying down.
She didn’t know when it started, but she found herself caring for Shen Ying’s emotions just by looking at her expression. She didn’t want her to be sad and wanted to make her happy.
I’m doomed, Song Zhi thought. I think I’ve been infected by a virus. I’m broken.
Movie theaters hadn’t yet reached the urban villages of the Qingnong District. They had to go closer to the city center to see a movie.
The two of them left at 3 PM. There was no bus service in their residential area, so they had to walk for a while to get to the bus stop.
They waited for more than ten minutes. The buses coming and going were all rickety, but none of them were the bus they needed.
Song Zhi simply asked, “How long would it take to walk? I don’t want to wait anymore.”
Her patience was already at its limit. This was the first time in her life she had to wait, and what she was waiting for wasn’t even a person, just a bus. This made Song Zhi even more annoyed.
Shen Ying said, “Half an hour.”
Song Zhi made a quick decision. “Shall we walk?”
Shen Ying generally didn’t voice any opposition, so Song Zhi quickly got her consent.
Luckily, it was cold now and not far away, so it wouldn’t be hot to walk. Not!
The wind was strong when they left. To avoid being cold, Song Zhi had deliberately worn a long-sleeved sweater that looked like a two-piece.
It was stitched together like a sweatshirt and felt heavy, which made Song Zhi, who was prone to getting hot, break out in a light sweat after ten minutes of walking.
Shen Ying, who was beside her, naturally saw the sweat.
Shen Ying said, “Let’s take a taxi.”
Song Zhi gritted her teeth and walked forward. Giving up now would mean compromising, and the word compromise was not in her dictionary. So she said in a very cool tone, “No!”
Another reason was that she was afraid Shen Ying didn’t have money.
Making someone feel awkward was not her style.
After living with Shen Ying for this long, she felt that she had a good eight out of ten understanding of Shen Ying’s family situation.
Shen Ying had no choice but to go along with her, silently watching from the side, ready to support her as soon as she gave up.
In the last second, just as Song Zhi felt like she was about to burst into flames, the two of them finally reached the entrance of the movie theater.
Shen Ying handed the tickets to Song Zhi and walked toward the ticket counter. “I’ll go get some water.”
Song Zhi, breathless, said, “Okay.”
She looked around and finally sat down on a flower bed at the entrance of the theater.
The wind was strong there, and in a little while, she felt like she had come back to life.
Having recovered, Song Zhi was about to go find Shen Ying.
Because a young couple in front of her had been arguing and were now moving toward her.
Song Zhi found them annoying and loud.
This made her think of how good Shen Ying was.
With her identity, she had not been without people who tried to get close to her. But those people had a utilitarianism in their eyes and a lack of intelligence in their actions. They couldn’t keep up the pretense for more than a few days and would start nagging, which was very annoying.
Her temper was already not great, and it got worse when she was annoyed. Later, she came up with a solution.
The couple stopped beside her, blocking the path she needed to take to get off the flower bed.
Song Zhi, speechless, stood there with her arms crossed, her presence impossible to ignore.
The couple, absorbed in their argument, paid no attention to others. Their voices were loud enough to pierce a person’s skull. Song Zhi suspected that the people watching movies inside could hear them.
The girl had a round face with some plump cheeks and pretty makeup. She looked very cute.
The girl said, “It’s all your fault. I told you we were going to see this movie, and you forgot! This is my idol’s first leading role!”
The boy said, “I told you I didn’t forget. I went to a friend’s birthday party, and when I got back, the tickets were sold out.”
The girl said, “Who told you to go with her! That shameless hussy!”
The boy’s face darkened. “It’s just one ticket! Why do you have to be so vulgar?”
This surprised Song Zhi a little. The boy had triangular eyes, and the outer corners drooped toward his forehead, making him look like he was asking for a punch. She hadn’t expected him to say something so sensible.
Song Zhi wanted to roll her eyes. With her arms still crossed, she walked to the exit, right between the two of them. “Excuse me.”
The two of them turned their heads sharply. Who knows what was going through their minds, but at this crucial moment, they united against an outsider. “What’s it to you?!”
Song Zhi: “…”
The boy was already annoyed. He saw the tickets in Song Zhi’s hand and had a flash of inspiration. “I’ll pay three times the price for the tickets you have! Sell them to me.”
Song Zhi held the tickets between her fingers and waved them in front of him. “You mean these?”
The couple’s eyes followed the tickets. “Yes!”
Song Zhi pretended to be in deep thought.
The boy got impatient. “Are you going to sell or not?! Just say the word. Don’t waste my time.”
Song Zhi waved the tickets again. The girl’s eyes were glued to the tickets. Song Zhi looked closely and realized that it was a romance movie starring a popular young actor.
But this was the movie Shen Ying had been wanting to see.
Song Zhi said, “No.”
She neatly put the tickets away. “You two are very loud. Excuse me.”
Because of their loud voices, the people around them had already started to look annoyed. Now, Song Zhi’s direct statement made those annoyed people smile openly.
The boy felt embarrassed, and his face was ugly. The girl was pulling on his sleeve, acting all cutesy.
The boy instantly became arrogant, as if pumped with adrenaline. “I’ll give you ten times the price!”
Song Zhi: “…”
At this moment, she saw Shen Ying’s figure. Shen Ying was walking slowly, with a bag in one hand and the other in her pocket. She was beautiful and serene.
Looking at Shen Ying’s figure, her heart was moved, and she was too lazy to argue with the couple. She said coldly, “Move.”
The couple wouldn’t give up and kept pestering her to agree.
Shen Ying had heard the gist of it from the ticket counter.
She walked straight over. Perhaps because her face was too cold, the couple subconsciously separated, and Song Zhi was freed.
Song Zhi tugged on Shen Ying’s sleeve, just like the girl, and shook it. She deliberately held up the tickets. “Let’s go. Let’s go see this popular young actor’s movie.”
Shen Ying cooperated and held her hand back.
The boy “ay’d” and called out to them. His gaze stayed on Shen Ying. It seemed he had figured out that Shen Ying was the one in charge. If she didn’t agree, Song Zhi’s consent was useless.
Song Zhi turned sideways, completely blocking Shen Ying behind her.
She didn’t like people looking at Shen Ying. When others looked at Shen Ying, she felt an uncomfortable sense of her possession being coveted.
She hooked Shen Ying’s finger. Shen Ying leaned her ear toward her.
Song Zhi quietly asked if Shen Ying wanted to sell.
Shen Ying stayed silent, just letting Song Zhi decide.
In front of the couple, Song Zhi fiddled with the two tickets. The original price was 21 yuan per ticket, but the couple had raised the price to 200.
That was about half a month of Shen Ying’s tutoring money.
She didn’t care about the money, but for Shen Ying, this was undoubtedly a huge help.
But Song Zhi didn’t care. Song Zhi looked at the couple who were still arguing in shifts and shrugged. “Since you two can’t come to a clear conclusion, we’ll be leaving.”
The boy said, “Hey, beautiful. Let’s not make a deal, but let’s exchange contact info. You can always ask for my help in the future.”
The boy’s words were directed at Song Zhi, but his eyes were fixed on Shen Ying. It was obvious who he wanted contact info for.
Song Zhi’s face turned cold in that instant. She thought she was wrong. She still didn’t like being with idiots. A cold smile appeared on her face. “You’d better watch your mouth. If you don’t want it anymore, you can ask for my help.”
Her attitude was sharp and her tone was full of confidence. Although her clothes were average, her aura was extraordinary. The boy was momentarily unsure of her background and didn’t dare to reply.
The woman also screamed. She used the Louis Vuitton bag she was carrying like a tattered rag, hitting the boy with it. “Zhao Zhong! I’m still here! Have you no shame?”
The boy started to sweet-talk his girlfriend, calling her “baby.” Song Zhi didn’t have time to listen to them. After she finished speaking, she pulled Shen Ying and turned to leave.
“Three hundred!” The woman, who had tossed her hair back after it had flown forward from her movements, was determined to get those tickets today.
She neatly threw her bag at the boy, quickly counted out the cash, and without waiting for Song Zhi to agree, she took the money and the tickets.
The girl tugged hard on the tickets but couldn’t get them. She looked down and saw that the other person’s two slender fingers were holding the tickets. They weren’t using much force, but the tickets wouldn’t move at all.
The girl looked a bit guilty. “What are you doing?”
Song Zhi asked back flatly, “Did I agree?”
She now felt that it was truly rude. It was not good at all to put your hands on someone without their consent.
Song Zhi turned to look at Shen Ying. Shen Ying gestured for her to do what she wanted, and she let go.
The girl pinched the boy’s ear and stood up. “Let’s go, let’s go watch the movie.”
Song Zhi took the cash, waved the bag in Shen Ying’s hand, and took it.
Song Zhi said, “Do you want to see the movie, or do you want to go home?”
Shen Ying, however, pointed to the red spots on Song Zhi’s neck and shoulders from a distance, saying, “Let’s go buy clothes.”
Song Zhi thought this person was so strange.
