After the Real Young Miss Became My Canary - Chapter 10.2
Chapter 10.2: The Last Time
This was good.
And then she saw the two small dimples at the corners of Song Zhi’s lips, and above them, Song Zhi’s sparkling eyes.
Song Zhi smiled and asked her which way to go, looking lively and glancing around the intersection. But her gaze never left Shen Ying.
Shen Ying still didn’t quite dare to look at Song Zhi. She always felt that Song Zhi had an aura that made it impossible to look at her directly.
That aura was probably called confidence, or maybe fearlessness.
Although she didn’t want to, some things were becoming almost obvious.
Shen Ying asked the overly lively Song Zhi, “What did she say to you?”
The relentless neighbor opposite them wouldn’t suddenly let go of such a good opportunity to mock her.
The only possibility was Song Zhi.
Song Zhi looked very innocent and gave a docile, sweet smile. “She cursed at me, so I just scared her a little. Who knew she’d be so easily frightened?”
Shen Ying re-examined this seemingly carefree person.
Song Zhi looked obedient, but she had a sharp edge. As long as people didn’t cross her line, she could be unconditionally good to them.
But as soon as someone stepped over that line, she would immediately throw them out.
Song Zhi smiled at Shen Ying, then suddenly let out an exaggerated sigh.
Shen Ying had been thinking about distance from beginning to end and had maintained a barrier between them.
But Song Zhi’s wide, fluttering eyes, and the clear expectation in her gaze, were too obvious.
She was waiting for her to ask.
Just this once.
Shen Ying said to herself silently.
The last time.
So she heard herself ask in a flat, cold voice, “What are you doing?”
Song Zhi didn’t mind the coldness in her voice at all. As long as Shen Ying was willing to talk to her, she was satisfied.
Song Zhi was coy. “I used to really hate going out, but now I love it. Do you know why?”
Then she looked at her with expectant eyes again.
Shen Ying deliberately gave her the cold shoulder, wanting her to retreat in the face of difficulty.
But it wasn’t her style to ignore a friend’s words, so after a two-minute silence, she asked, “Why?”
She didn’t even realize that in her subconscious, Song Zhi had already been categorized as a friend.
Song Zhi elongated her words, pretending to be profound, then broke character in a second. “Because I’m going out with you now! I’m happy to go out with you.”
After saying that, she didn’t expect Shen Ying to respond. She just repeated the words to herself twice and thought she was being very interesting.
Shen Ying quietly hummed in response.
And once again, she discarded the principles she had just mentally recited for handling their relationship.
“Should we go look at the store over there?”
Song Zhi suddenly stopped walking and quickly turned around, facing Shen Ying and pointing to a store not far down the street.
Song Zhi waited for Shen Ying’s reply, silently planning that if Shen Ying disagreed, she would just act first and apologize later.
Because not far from them, there were two people in black, moving with a slick, practiced swiftness, scrutinizing the face of every person who passed by.
No!
Song Zhi thought.
She hadn’t had enough of this life yet, and she hadn’t found a good opportunity to escape Hong Kong City. How could she be found now?!
These people were so annoying. It had been so many days, and they were still buzzing around this small patch of land like flies.
She wasn’t a piece of… well.
They might not be annoyed, but she certainly was.
Shen Ying looked up.
The only supermarket for miles stood quietly in front of them.
There was a lot of foot traffic. The store doors repeatedly opened and closed, like a giant beast with a mouth, swallowing and spitting out food.
Shen Ying said, “Okay.”
Song Zhi could feel the footsteps gradually approaching them. Her ears were glued to the sound of those two pairs of feet. For a moment, she didn’t even hear Shen Ying’s answer. She just assumed that with Shen Ying’s personality of only moving toward a goal, she probably wouldn’t agree.
So Song Zhi said, “I really, really want to go. Let’s go.”
After saying that, she immediately grabbed Shen Ying’s wrist, turned a corner, and led her with a brisk stride.
Shen Ying had a thin layer of calluses on her fingers. Song Zhi had known this since the second time she saw her.
She was prepared for a rough feel, but her hand found a delicate and smooth wrist.
It took her three seconds to realize she had grabbed her wrist.
The two were now very close, so close that Song Zhi could smell the faint scent of the person behind her.
It was a simple, fresh scent of soap.
At their current distance, it unapologetically wafted toward Song Zhi’s nose.
Song Zhi was reminded of that evening she lay in the alley.
When her body was cold and shaking from blood loss, a fresh scent of soap enveloped her nose.
Warmth followed right after.
Her body, which had slowly become cold from not moving for a long time, began to warm up.
Rapidly.
With a bang, it was as if someone had lit a fire in the middle of a long, cold winter.
As she turned her body sideways, Song Zhi naturally raised her hand and pulled her hood down.
The two of them moved very quickly, as if their original destination was the store all along.
Since those people were looking for someone, they wouldn’t miss this area. Hiding in the store was just a temporary solution. Song Zhi planned to act when the opportunity arose.
Song Zhi’s body temperature was high, just like her passionate and fiery personality.
Her hand, which was wrapped around Shen Ying’s wrist, felt like fire, transferring warmth to Shen Ying’s wrist, which was cooler than hers.
Shen Ying felt like she had been scalded.
She had been intruded upon by something that wasn’t hers. It was like a wild beast’s marked territory being trespassed upon without warning.
She suddenly pulled her hand away, letting her still-warm hand gradually cool down in the air.
But she only had a moment of time. The next second, Song Zhi, who thought she hadn’t held on tight enough, reached out again.
Because Shen Ying was reaching out at the same time, Song Zhi, who was still standing in her original spot, was able to grab her hand.
It felt delicate to the touch, but a closer examination revealed a roughness at the edges of her fingers. It was completely unlike the owner of the hand, who was cold on the outside but soft on the inside.
Song Zhi couldn’t control herself and rubbed her hand a few times.
Then she heard Shen Ying’s cold voice. “Let go!”
Song Zhi defended herself. “I didn’t do it on purpose!”
Then her voice grew smaller and smaller under Shen Ying’s gaze.
Okay, she admitted that for a moment there, because the hand was too soft, she hadn’t reacted in time and had rubbed it a few times.
Fortunately, Shen Ying didn’t say anything and followed her into the small store.
Once they were settled behind a shelf, Shen Ying said, “This store has a small door that leads directly to the alley.”
