After the Real Young Miss Became My Canary - Chapter 10.1
Chapter 10.1: The Last Time
◎ And once again, she discarded the principles she had just mentally recited for handling their relationship. ◎
The mist dissipated, slowly drifting toward Shen Ying’s hands resting on the table. She curled her fingers the moment Song Zhi spoke.
She stared at Song Zhi, who met her gaze directly, tilting her head slightly as if to ask, “What’s wrong?”
It was a while before Shen Ying moved her eyes away. She calmly let go. “I’m not eating.”
She felt as if she had given Song Zhi a wrong impression, and that wasn’t good.
She stood straight by the table, like an unbending bamboo stalk, detached from the mortal world, and naturally, she wouldn’t eat Song Zhi’s noodles.
Song Zhi immediately became discouraged. She propped herself on the table, slumped over, and looked up at Shen Ying from that position.
Shen Ying didn’t look at her.
It was easier to cut ties without feelings.
They would be strangers in the future, wouldn’t they?
Song Zhi squeezed out two crocodile tears. “Do you really despise me that much? You won’t even touch a bowl that I haven’t touched?”
She was so beautiful, and she hadn’t even eaten anything. What was wrong with Shen Ying sharing a bit? Shen Ying’s behavior always made her feel like she was being disliked.
Shen Ying said, “No.”
Song Zhi didn’t believe her. “Then why aren’t you eating?”
Shen Ying said flatly, “I ate. Would you have had enough?”
She’s afraid I wouldn’t have enough.
Song Zhi savored the words. They were a bit like noodle soup. When they entered her ears, they warmed her stomach in this cold and bitter weather.
Song Zhi happily started eating her noodles. “I have enough! I’m not a pig, how could I eat that much?”
The noodles were very fragrant. Although they were soft and pliable, they had a certain resilience.
Combined with the fragrance of the rice, it made you want to slurp them all down.
These noodles didn’t have that disgusting feeling she got from the food at home.
Song Zhi thought to herself.
Her illness hadn’t been so severe when she was abroad, but after returning to the Song family, it had gotten much worse, to the point where she couldn’t swallow food.
This might be related to the fact that she always had to see Song Guan. He was just too disgusting.
After finishing the noodles, the two of them left together. As luck would have it, when they opened the door, they came face to face with the middle-aged woman from across the hall.
When Shen Ying saw the woman, her body tensed up. Her jaw was clenched, forming a sharp, taut line. Then she stepped in front of Song Zhi, shielding her.
Song Zhi hadn’t even reacted before she was pushed behind. To put it more nicely, she was being protected.
Being shielded by someone… she thought about it carefully. This was the first time this had ever happened. Even her own mother had never protected her like this. She felt a bit awkward and uneasy. She was used to fending for herself, and this was the first time she was standing behind someone. This made her decide not to hold a grudge against Shen Ying.
She whispered in Shen Ying’s ear, “What’s wrong?”
Song Zhi was considered tall, at 1.7 meters. Shen Ying was a bit shorter than her. When she lowered her head, she was right by Shen Ying’s ear.
And then she saw Shen Ying’s pale ears flush slightly red.
Shen Ying said, “Let’s go. Don’t listen to anything she says.”
Song Zhi looked at Shen Ying’s face, which was almost a straight line.
This posture was what people adopted when they encountered something dangerous, and Shen Ying’s first reaction upon seeing the woman was to tense up and block Song Zhi, preventing her from being in front of this person.
Suddenly, she savored a new kind of flavor from this posture.
It was faint, but sweet, and it filled her heart all the way through.
She looked at the person’s back and suddenly felt very good.
Shen Ying kept her body tense and led Song Zhi down the stairs. When they reached the landing, she wanted to switch places with Song Zhi to fully shield her, but Song Zhi didn’t want that.
She didn’t want Song Zhi to know about those sordid matters, and she didn’t want to act too strangely, so she just walked half a step behind Song Zhi, her hand loosely draped at her side.
What she didn’t see was that the moment the two of them turned the corner, the normally obedient Song Zhi, who had been following her with her head down, suddenly lifted her head.
The corners of Song Zhi’s mouth turned up slightly, slowly breaking into a smile. Two dimples appeared on her face.
She smiled and mouthed to the stiffly standing woman on the landing: “Bang.”
“Bang!”
A loud crash.
Shen Ying subconsciously turned back, only to see the woman who had fallen and was sitting on the ground behind the open iron gate.
The woman was on the floor, her body trembling uncontrollably. When she met Shen Ying’s gaze, she immediately turned her head away.
There was no cursing, no obvious sign of avoiding her like a snake.
Shen Ying felt a lot of relief, as if the tight line that had always been around her neck had temporarily loosened. The hand that had been loosely wrapped around Song Zhi’s side also dropped.
Although she didn’t know why the neighbor was acting so out of character, it saved her a lot of trouble.
What if Song Zhi asked why the neighbor was cursing at her? How would she explain?
She didn’t want to reveal her wounds in front of Song Zhi. But if Song Zhi wanted to know about those things, she could find out on her own.
She just didn’t want Song Zhi to know, not at all. The embarrassment and hardship… it was enough for her to know. If she brought it up to others, it would look like she was intentionally seeking pity.
Shen Ying calmly withdrew her gaze.
