After the Nerd Marked the Top Omega - Chapter 1
Jiangcheng University.
It had been spring for some time, and the temperature was gradually rising. Many trees along the roadside were sprouting tender green leaves, and the flowers and plants were exceptionally vibrant.
The weather was clear, and the warm, bright sunlight shone on the person sitting by the classroom window, casting a bright patch of light and shadow.
The girl’s hair was simply tied into a ponytail, and she wore plain, loose casual clothes. She was inconspicuous in the crowd, the easiest one to overlook at a glance.
Even if someone did notice her, what drew attention was the pair of thick, outdated black-rimmed glasses she wore, which obscured most of her features.
The sun was a bit strong, but Fang Xu didn’t change her seat.
She raised a hand to push up her glasses, looking at the document on the screen. Her fingertips occasionally paused, then typed more smoothly.
It was already noon. As soon as the class bell rang, the students instantly relaxed, stretched, stood up, and discussed what to eat for lunch.
The sound was quite loud, even a bit noisy, but as it drifted to the intensely focused Fang Xu’s ears, it seemed to be automatically filtered out, not distracting her in the slightest.
The classroom slowly quieted down, and the document on the screen was nearing its end. Fang Xu turned around to grab her water bottle beside her and was caught off guard by an enlarged, resentful face right in front of her.
Her heart leaped, but after clearly seeing who it was, the shock subsided.
She calmed her tone and asked, “Xingxing, why are you here?”
Tang Xingxing, her high school classmate. They both enrolled in the Computer Science program at Jiangcheng University, slowly became close, and she was one of Fang Xu’s few friends.
Tang Xingxing crossed her arms and snorted. She pointed to the watch on her wrist, her tone filled with resentment: “I’ve been waiting here for you since class ended, and what happens? I sat here for fifteen minutes, and you only see me now!”
She had never seen anyone so serious and engrossed in their work!
Fang Xu: “…”
She was aware of this trait of hers and apologized awkwardly, “Next time, if I don’t respond when you call me, just tap my shoulder.”
Tang Xingxing hadn’t taken it to heart and changed her posture with a carefree air: “I’m just kidding. Want to go eat together?”
They were in the same major and usually ate together.
Fang Xu was about to agree, but her phone placed nearby vibrated. She glanced at the message, her eyes pausing for a moment, then she looked up and said, “I’m not going to the cafeteria for lunch. I’ll just have a piece of bread.”
Tang Xingxing remembered it was Wednesday and realized Fang Xu had a part-time job, but was still confused, asking, “Doesn’t the bubble tea shop require you to be there at four in the afternoon? Why go so early?”
There were still over three hours in between; there was plenty of time to go to the cafeteria for lunch.
“I’m not going to the bubble tea shop…” Fang Xu’s voice paused slightly mid-sentence, seemingly thinking about how to explain.
Tang Xingxing caught this subtle pause, a lightbulb went off in her head, and she suddenly said, “Did Song Shu fight with you again?!”
Song Shu, Fang Xu’s Omega girlfriend, was also an alumna from their high school. She was pretty, had high standards, and a notably bad temper.
The two had a small fight every three days, a major one every five days, occasionally interspersed with silent treatments and talks of breaking up.
Of course, the fighting, silent treatments, and talks of breaking up were all unilateral from Song Shu, but without exception, the one who eventually sought reconciliation, apologized, and coaxed her was always Fang Xu.
Fang Xu couldn’t think of any other excuse and could only nod slightly.
Receiving confirmation, Tang Xingxing became even angrier than before: “What’s the reason this time? Does she dislike you for being a Beta, or has her spoiled princess syndrome acted up again?”
In her opinion, Fang Xu had good grades, a good personality, and was reliable in her work. Aside from being a bit introverted, she was impeccable in every other aspect.
Fang Xu shook her head gently: “Don’t misunderstand, I was at fault this time too…”
“With your temper, you could actually fight with her?” Tang Xingxing interrupted her, her volume rising a notch, “I’m telling you, no one else is so deliberately difficult in a relationship. She’s just taking advantage of your good temper!”
“You two started dating right after high school graduation, and it’s almost three years now. Can you count the number of times she’s cared about you on your fingers?”
Fang Xu didn’t respond to the latter part of the sentence, handed her water bottle to Tang Xingxing, and said calmly, “Don’t be angry, it’s fine.”
If an uninformed passerby saw them, they probably wouldn’t be able to tell who the person involved was.
Tang Xingxing’s remaining words were stuck in her stomach. She could only glare at Fang Xu, feeling frustrated: “Only you think it’s fine. You were helping her write that assignment just now, weren’t you?”
It hadn’t been long since the semester started, and there was no way their Computer Science major had any thesis to write. It was obvious she was helping Song Shu, who was in the History department.
“You saw it?” Fang Xu smiled, explaining, “Song Shu recently enrolled in a dance class, so she doesn’t have much spare time.”
Tang Xingxing pressed, “What about you? Do you have plenty of spare time?”
She had to complete her own coursework, work part-time at the bubble tea shop, and tutor two students. The only bit of time she managed to squeeze out was spent studying History, which wasn’t her major, and she couldn’t forget to apologize and coax her girlfriend.
If anyone lacked time, it certainly wasn’t Song Shu.
Fang Xu could feel her friend’s concern and reassured her, “Don’t worry, I can manage everything on my end.”
There was hardly anyone left in the classroom. Tang Xingxing knew she couldn’t persuade her, so she just sighed and said, “If you really can’t stand it anymore, breaking up is also an option.”
She knew why they were together and understood why Fang Xu wouldn’t initiate a breakup.
“Okay,” Fang Xu closed her laptop and said, “Xingxing, I don’t have a part-time job tomorrow, shall I accompany you to eat out?”
Tang Xingxing and Song Shu didn’t get along, making it difficult for the three of them to hang out together, so they had to spend time separately.
Tang Xingxing helped her put the water bottle into the side pocket of her backpack and immediately refused when she heard this: “Eat out? Have you gotten five hours of sleep these past few days? If you have time, hurry back and catch up on your sleep!”
Fang Xu’s eyes curved into a smile, and she agreed.
The two walked out of the academic building together, and a slight breeze passed by.
It was then that Fang Xu vaguely sensed that today seemed a bit different from usual. “Xingxing, don’t you think the campus is quite quiet?”
There were few people on the roads and in the academic building, which was unusual.
Tang Xingxing blinked, turning to look at the person beside her: “You don’t know, do you?”
Fang Xu: “Know what?”
“Pei Yunci!” Tang Xingxing said an unfamiliar name.
Fang Xu hesitated for a moment, searched her memory, and confirmed that she genuinely didn’t know, then asked, “Who is that?”
Tang Xingxing knew her friend was usually too busy and had no time to pay attention to campus forums or gossip besides studying.
She introduced her: “You know the Pei Group, right? Pei Yunci is the head of the Pei Group and an S-level Omega, a figure who exists only in legends.”
“Most importantly, she is also a graduate of Jiangcheng University, an alumna of ours. She’s here today to give a lecture, and practically everyone in the whole school must have gone.”
As she spoke, Tang Xingxing looked around and casually said, “If you walk a bit further ahead, you should be able to see Pei Yunci’s photo.”
Jiangcheng University also placed great importance on Pei Yunci and the two buildings and various laboratory equipment she donated. They had been promoting her on campus and the official website since last week, and many posters were put up.
Fang Xu hummed in response, but her feet didn’t move: “I’ll look when I get back. Are you going to this lecture too?”
Tang Xingxing smiled and nodded. She loved a crowd and was curious about the legendary powerful figure: “Yes, I was originally planning to go with you.”
But now, it seemed unlikely.
“I’ll go with you next time if there’s a chance,” Fang Xu didn’t want to waste any more of her time: “You go eat first, then go early to grab a good seat.”
“Oh right, you reminded me!” Tang Xingxing stopped being polite and quickly said, “I’ll head to the cafeteria then, or I won’t be able to find a seat later. I’ll remember to take a picture of Pei Yunci for you!”
“Okay.”
Only after Tang Xingxing’s figure disappeared from sight did Fang Xu look down at her phone screen.
The message Song Shu had just sent her was still displayed.
【Song Shu: Fang Xu, I’m a bit tired of our relationship. Three years isn’t long, but it’s not short either. How about we end it here?】
【Song Shu: I know you’re not the type to cling on, that’s why I’m making it absolutely clear.】
【Song Shu: Even if you pretend not to see the message, my mind won’t change.】
【Song Shu: Fang Xu, let’s break up.】
The sunlight fell on Fang Xu’s long eyelashes, casting a shadow.
Song Shu rarely sent her messages this long; most of the time, they were just one or two simple words.
Fang Xu slowly reread the message a few times before moving her fingers slightly and typing on the screen.
【Fang Xu: I’m sorry, where are you? Can we talk?】
After sending the message, she returned to the dormitory first.
Fang Xu had woken up at five this morning, prepared her tutoring materials, and then started helping Song Shu write her course thesis. She had a full schedule of classes in the morning, and hadn’t eaten breakfast or lunch. Her stomach ached slightly as she walked, and her vision was dim.
After eating two somewhat dry slices of bread with cold water, she felt the dizziness from her low blood sugar subside a bit.
The phone screen remained black; the other party hadn’t replied yet, which Fang Xu was long used to.
She took out a palm-sized gift box from the drawer. It was exquisitely packaged, and inside was a pair of delicate butterfly ear clips. The wings were hollowed out and carved, looking lifelike.
It cost 1399 Yuan, more than Fang Xu’s monthly living expenses. It was originally a birthday gift she had prepared for Song Shu.
With a “click,” Fang Xu closed the gift box and carefully placed it in her backpack, trying to avoid bumping the box.
She thought she could only use this to apologize for now and make up the birthday gift later when she received her part-time pay.
She thought, Song Shu always liked to talk about breaking up; this time should just be a casual remark too.
