- Chapter 39 - Extra Episode 1
The weather after a rain always brings a refreshing feeling. Luo Nianshu was carrying several bags of gifts in one hand while pulling Qiao Jinyan along with the other as they walked through the family housing compound.
A few days ago, a new parking lot had begun construction in the area. Excavators were rumbling as they dug up the ground, and several small yellow mounds of dirt still remained on the asphalt road, now muddy and slippery due to the rain.
Qiao Jinyan was wearing a pair of heels with a five-centimeter stiletto. The thin heels easily sank into the mud, making her walk unsteady, and her once black velvet shoes were now splattered with yellow mud spots.
Seeing this, Luo Nianshu sighed. “Want me to carry you?”
To get to the residential building ahead, they had to pass through this muddy road. With how Qiao Jinyan was staggering along, it would be a miracle if she didn’t fall flat into the mud.
“No need. We’re already drawing enough attention.”
Qiao Jinyan muttered under her breath, nervously adjusting the blue mask over her face.
Ever since she had crashed a wedding and confessed to Luo Nianshu a few days ago, the two had become the hottest celebrity couple in the nation. Their news had dominated the trending topics for three full days. Now, anytime they stepped outside, fans would rush over for autographs.
Luo Nianshu pushed up her sunglasses. “Aren’t we fully geared up already?”
Then, with a mischievous glint, she leaned in and stole a quick kiss on Qiao Jinyan’s cheek through her mask. “Worst case, we just show a little PDA and hit the trending list again.”
“You’re so annoying,” Qiao Jinyan playfully scolded.
Even with their sunglasses and masks, Qiao Jinyan could feel Luo Nianshu smiling at her. She coughed lightly, placed both hands on Luo Nianshu’s empty arm for balance, and continued wobbling along the muddy road.
Their journey was treacherous, turning a short ten-meter stretch into what felt like a grueling expedition. By the time they reached solid ground, Qiao Jinyan’s black shoes had become yellow. She grumpily scraped off the mud caked onto her heels using the steps. Her once-pristine appearance was now as disheveled as someone who had rolled in a mud pit not quite the first impression she wanted to give her future grandmother-in-law.
Luo Nianshu set the gift bags on the ground with a rustle. She took out a tissue and spread it on the floor for Qiao Jinyan to sit on, then pulled out another to start cleaning the mud from her heels.
“I’m wearing a skirt, you know.”
Qiao Jinyan blushed. Sitting like this exposed everything under her tight-fitting skirt. Although nothing was truly visible from the sides, she instinctively tried to tug her skirt down.
“I’m the only one who can see,” Luo Nianshu replied teasingly. She scooted closer to ensure Qiao Jinyan’s skirt was fully covered from public view.
Qiao Jinyan’s long, fair legs looked like smooth porcelain. Luo Nianshu couldn’t resist gently caressing her ankle, her fingertips circling the protruding bone delicately.
Qiao Jinyan gasped and tried to pull her foot back, but Luo Nianshu held on tightly.
Luo Nianshu glanced up, then focused back on the shoe.
“We’re already married, you know. What’s there to be shy about? Especially after last night…”
“Nianshu!”
Qiao Jinyan groaned in embarrassment and struggled again, but Luo Nianshu wouldn’t let go.
“Don’t move. I’m cleaning your shoes.”
Though her tone was stern, it was laced with affection. Since they registered their marriage, Qiao Jinyan while still proud and aloof in public had become much more docile around her, which gave Luo Nianshu a triumphant sense of satisfaction.
Sure enough, Qiao Jinyan stopped moving. She quietly held her leg up while Luo Nianshu carefully wiped off the remaining mud.
With her head bowed, Luo Nianshu’s sunglasses had slipped slightly. Through the gap, Qiao Jinyan could see her long, fluttering eyelashes glinting gold in the sunlight as she worked with deep concentration.
So beautiful.
No wonder she fell for her.
Qiao Jinyan, feeling a mix of pride and affection, leaned in to kiss Luo Nianshu. Their masks trapped their shared breath, fogging up their sunglasses, making it hard to breathe.
But neither stopped the kiss.
“Why do you always kiss me?” Luo Nianshu murmured, tilting her head to kiss back.
“Mmm… You kiss me all the time too…”
Qiao Jinyan inhaled the soft peach scent surrounding her and muttered, “Nianshu… Nianshu…”
“Yes?”
“What body wash do you use?!”
They entered the building and climbed a few steps to reach a secure door.
Elderly people usually live on the ground floor due to mobility issues, and Luo Nianshu’s grandmother was no exception.
Living on the first floor had its pros and cons convenient access, but dampness and bugs during rainy days made the air colder than usual.
“Grandma has a Chinese rural dog named Maomao. He’s very loyal and might jump at strangers. Stay behind me so I can shield you. Once he gets used to you, you can play with him freely.”
Qiao Jinyan replied absentmindedly, “Mhm.”
The door opened, and Grandma peeked out. She was slightly hunched over, her body frail but still energetic with a healthy flush to her face.
“The bride is here!” Grandma said cheerfully.
“Hello, Grandma.” Qiao Jinyan quickly stepped up to support her gently.
From inside the house, barking approached rapidly. A medium sized, fluffy yellow dog bounded toward the door. Luo Nianshu quickly shouted for Maomao to stay back, but he rushed past her and leaped onto Qiao Jinyan
“Maomao!”
Luo Nianshu’s face went pale.
“Maomao’s such a good boy.”
Qiao Jinyan bent down and hugged Maomao, smiling as the dog licked her face.
Luo Nianshu: “???”
She’d never seen Maomao act so friendly!
“Oh, what are you worried about?” Grandma patted Luo Nianshu’s arm. “While you were abroad, it was Jinyan who visited and took care of me. Maomao already knows her well.”
Luo Nianshu: “…?”
She had suspected it might’ve been Qiao Jinyan when Grandma mentioned someone visiting, but since Jinyan never brought it up and didn’t react when they planned the visit together, she had dismissed the idea.
“Come, come. Don’t just stand there. I’ve already made lunch, let’s eat.”
Grandma wrapped an arm around Qiao Jinyan and led her toward the dining table. Qiao Jinyan looked back and reached for Luo Nianshu “Nianshu, come on…”
“Don’t worry about her, she can take care of herself,” Grandma chuckled, focusing entirely on Qiao Jinyan while ignoring her actual granddaughter.
“Fine.”
Luo Nianshu stood awkwardly with the gift bags, then sighed, changed into slippers, and sat down at the table. “Grandma, you can’t just ignore me because your daughter-in-law is prettier!”
“I like pretty daughters-in-law,” Grandma replied with a kind smile and picked up a piece of braised pork to put in Qiao Jinyan’s bowl.
Luo Nianshu quickly snatched it and ate it. “She’s dieting. No fatty meat.”
Grandma: “…”
Qiao Jinyan hurried to nod. “It’s true. My company requires me to lose another two pounds this week.”
“I see…” Grandma nodded thoughtfully, then picked the best-looking broccoli from the plate and placed it on Qiao Jinyan’s small dish.
A few bites into the meal, Qiao Jinyan’s plate was piled high.
“You’d better eat it all,” Luo Nianshu joked.
Qiao Jinyan nudged her with her foot under the table, visibly troubled. She didn’t want to disrespect Grandma, but she also had strict weight targets to hit.
Luo Nianshu took a sip of soup and whispered in her ear while Grandma was distracted: “Eat slowly. I’ll help finish the rest when Grandma washes the dishes.”
After lunch, they chatted with Grandma and updated her on recent events.
Zhang Weiyin had been brought to justice. Although her backing was powerful, thanks to Qing Jiuyan’s help and the support of Zhao Group, their agency also stepped in to protect them, and the issue was finally resolved.
Somehow, news of their visit had leaked. One neighbor after another came to visit, bringing paper and pens to ask for autographs. Soon, the home felt less like a family visit and more like a fan meet-and-greet.
By the time things settled down, it was already evening. After washing up and changing into pajamas, the two lay in the bed Grandma had prepared.
Qiao Jinyan patted her face mask, watching Luo Nianshu browse online shopping with a secretive smile. Curious, she asked, “What are you grinning at?”
Luo Nianshu held up her phone to show her the screen pages of various styles of toys.
“Pick one. I’ll serve you tonight.”
Luo Nianshu purred and rubbed her head affectionately against Qiao Jinyan’s arm like a cat.
Qiao Jinyan raised an eyebrow, calmly pulled four different styles of toys from her small bag, and tossed them in front of Luo Nianshu with a seductive smile.
“Pick one. I’ll serve you tonight.”
