After the Divorce, My Wife Is Impossible to Coax - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
“Doctor Lu, President Wei is waiting for you.”
Emerging from the training grounds, before she even had a chance to return to the inpatient department, Lu Shen was “invited” by a black sedan to a villa on the outskirts of S City.
For Lu Shen, this was a normal “reception.” The Lu family maintained private ties with various powerful clans, and Lu Shen served as the pivotal link. Thus, even though she disliked crowds and frequently refused major social events, no one dared blame her for not showing “face.”
The villa was nestled deep within a forested mountain, shrouded beneath a thick, damp mist. Passing it on the highway, one couldn’t truly see the distinct scenery hidden within. Green bricks and stone tiles blended into the mountain; from the entrance, there were successive security checkpoints and hidden infrared detectors. Forcing entry would likely result in being sliced into geometric shapes by lasers.
Contradicting its rustic exterior, the interior decor showed no trace of nature. The entire building was covered in soft, high-end wool carpets; world-famous paintings hung on the walls. The ceiling was hollowed out, featuring a blue starlight scene inlaid with various gemstones.
However, sunlight could not reach here. Though the interior was as magnificent as a palace, it ultimately lived beneath green tiles, covered tightly, never seeing the light of day. Much like the owner of this villa, it gave off a fractured, contradictory sense of unease.
The people inside were all dressed in uniform black suits, their hair meticulously combed, wearing impeccable expressions as they carefully played the roles of the noble capitalist elite.
In contrast to the luxury around her, Lu Shen wore a sky-blue loose shirt under her white lab coat, paired with light gray straight-leg cropped trousers and cream-white pointed stiletto heels. Her look carried a touch of casualness that stood out sharply against the black-and-white surroundings.
The villa, only two or three stories high, was equipped with an extravagant elevator. It was entirely transparent and suspended outside the villa walls, offering a view of the landscape—the only corner of the interior that could face the sun directly. The elevator control panel was plated in silver, acting as a natural mirror. Lu Shen saw her own cold features reflected in the mist, looking somewhat unreal.
The weather had been clear at the Medical Center, but here the clouds had grown heavy, blocking all sunlight. The red numbers slid upward until the target floor reached the center of the display. When the elevator doors opened, her phone vibrated several times in succession from different numbers. It seemed even this fortified castle wasn’t airtight.
“Doctor Lu, President Wei is inside.” Beside the thick, wood-grained doorframe, a tall Alpha bowed low in a subservient manner, not daring to look up at her.
The door opened automatically before Lu Shen could reach for it.
A faint scent of musk pheromones probed cautiously at the doorway. As Lu Shen stepped onto the carpet—which was even softer than the hallway’s—the musk scent tried to entwine itself around her immediately, yet didn’t quite dare. It could only hover in the air a short distance away, surrounding her tightly as if trying to draw nourishment from her. The door closed behind her; outside, the Alpha remained with his head bowed.
“You’ve come,” a male Alpha’s voice said, low and hoarse, sounding like a man in his sixties.
However, Wei Ruicheng, sitting by the window, looked only to be in his forties. Unlike the elegant, sunny man at He Linghan’s banquet, he now looked like a man in the twilight of his life, his back hunched, one hand resting on the windowsill. He turned his deep, bottomless eyes toward Lu Shen.
“My rut has arrived.”
Lu Shen possessed an aura—a calm and indifference that remained untouched by all things—which deeply attracted the evil souls about to fall into hell.
Unfazed by his state, Lu Shen took a pair of gloves from her pocket. After putting them on, she turned on the room’s exhaust fan to draw out a portion of the pheromones, then walked behind the door to press a button on a climate-controlled box. A blast of cold air hit her face. It was empty.
“Where is the air freshener I requested?”
Lu Shen’s conditions for a house call were simple: air freshener and rubbing alcohol. In short, no touching was allowed, including via pheromones.
“Do you still refuse to accept me?” Wei Ruicheng’s gaze remained fixed on her. His deep-set eye sockets gave his look a touch of simulated affection. He had moved the air freshener just to test her attitude.
Although she was a Beta insensitive to pheromones, everyone in the industry knew the rules: Lu Shen disliked the pheromones of others. If he dared touch her with them, he would never see her again. Even Lu Shen’s grandfather, Lu Congwen, maintained a very ambiguous stance on the matter.
Clearly, the test failed. Lu Shen was repulsed by his pheromones; even at a distance, she insisted on neutralizing them with freshener.
“It’s in the refrigerator over there,” Wei Ruicheng said in a low voice, his gaze turning icy bit by bit. Lu Shen had never even called him by his name; she had never given him a single title.
Ignoring his threat, Lu Shen found the air freshener in the fridge and sprayed the surrounding area, then took out a wet sterile gauze from her pocket to wipe her exposed skin. Even without direct contact with his pheromones, Lu Shen had a near-obsessive persistence regarding cleanliness.
Only when there wasn’t a trace of pheromones left near her did Lu Shen place a small square box on his desk.
Wei Ruicheng’s attention was instantly captured by the box. The pheromones he had been struggling to release around her retracted significantly. This Alpha man, the same age as Lu Shen’s mother, used a greedy yet pious attitude to carefully open the box. Inside was a single capsule.
A capsule that could elevate a normal Alpha to SSS-rank. The effect lasted for a month; the price was two months of one’s lifespan.
“I knew it… I knew such a divine medicine existed.” With trembling hands, he stuffed the capsule into his mouth and swallowed it impatiently, not even needing water. “Lu Shen, your mother must have used this medicine to differentiate into an SSS-rank Alpha! I asked her several times, and she ignored me!”
“She wouldn’t give it to me! If I couldn’t become an SSS-rank Alpha, how could I fight that old thing He Linghan!”
“Do you know? Last time I merely mentioned that Jinlin liked An Zhaoyu, she suppressed me with her pheromones—in front of all those people! How did she dare!”
The face that others saw as handsome and rugged—the elegant CEO who made countless Omegas’ hearts flutter—was now hideous and terrifying, twisted by gloom.
After a while, he looked up. Seeing no reaction from Lu Shen, he softened again, returning to his gentle, star-eyed appearance. “Lu Shen, stay by my side. The Lu family can have whatever it wants. Just… find a way to lower the side effects of this medicine, alright?”
Lu Shen stood before the desk, quietly watching his one-man show. He acted this way every time he took the medicine.
Even though that capsule actually contained nothing but aspirin for pain and caffeine for energy. However, Wei Ruicheng had a very vivid imagination.
Feeling the “effects” slowly kicking in, Wei Ruicheng felt full of power again. He wasn’t a sixty-year-old man, nor a forty-year-old in his prime—he felt like a sunny twenty-year-old youth!
“Lu Shen, I heard you’ve been going on blind dates. Found a satisfactory one yet?” He stood up and approached her, reaching out to hug her.
“Do you not want the medicine next time?” Lu Shen turned to look at him, her expression void of emotion.
The Alpha’s large hand was covered in a network of veins, looking like a weapon meant to seize flowers. Lu Shen was a white rose growing tall and straight. Wei Ruicheng was less than five centimeters from her body, but she knew he didn’t dare. He Tingbai had only been dead a few years; his remarriage was already pushing the limits of He Linghan’s tolerance.
“It would be great if you were an Omega,” Wei Ruicheng said with deep regret.
He had already recovered his vigor, becoming the calculating and aggressive President Wei once more. He was in a good mood; although he didn’t push further, he maintained a position very close to Lu Shen.
“Beta doctors are so hard to coax. Your mother was the same way, but who would have thought she’d eventually differentiate into an SSS-rank Alpha? It made me both love and envy her.” He looked Lu Shen up and down carefully, as if trying to find traces of Lu Ming in her.
The landline on the desk suddenly rang, along with his private cell phone—all interrupting his next move.
“Lu Shen, so many people care about you. I’m starting to feel a bit hurt.” Wei Ruicheng wasn’t in a hurry to answer. Compared to his aged tone earlier, his voice now had more resonance and Alpha magnetism, along with a hint of intimate smiling.
Of ten things he said, Lu Shen usually wouldn’t answer one. But now, disgust filled her senses. She feared that if she stayed any longer, she wouldn’t be able to stop herself from retching.
“Well then, until next time. I hope you’ll consider it carefully; I’ve always been looking forward to it.” With one hand on the landline, he looked at her with a meaningful smile.
Lu Shen finally left the villa. But it wasn’t over yet.
Coming out of the dense mountain mist, another luxury sedan was waiting for her at a nearby fork in the road. The Wen family and the Wei family were true rivals, operating in the same fields and fighting for the same cake.
“You were startled. He wouldn’t dare do anything to you; my people were watching.” Wen Xuan liked exquisite luxury; the car’s windows and corners were filled with various expensive trinkets.
Unlike Wei Ruicheng, who forcibly raised his rank, President Wen—who appeared physically weak to the outside world—was actually a healthy female with SSS-rank pheromones. Except this SSS-rank President was an Omega.
Two SSS-rank Alpha rivals were, in reality, one Alpha with very ordinary rank and one SSS-rank Omega. The only true SSS-rank Alpha in all of S City currently was He Linghan. But this didn’t stop everyone’s ambition to become one.
“He asked for medicine again?” Wen Xuan rested her chin on her hand by the car window. Her dark brown waves were split into different light zones by the outside glare, looking as if sunlight were streaming in.
“Mm.” But it was still cloudy outside; Lu Shen double-checked the weather.
The quiet air was broken by a scoff.
“You know, it’s not easy for an Omega in this world,” Wen Xuan sat up straight and handed her a prepared suppressant. “I still prefer you to help me with it.”
During an SSS-rank Omega’s heat, Wen Xuan’s lips were a vivid crimson, and her eyes carried a dangerous, seductive desire.
Inappropriately, An Zhaoyu’s face flashed in Lu Shen’s mind. She should have been immune to SSS-rank Omegas by now. Thinking back, she still didn’t understand why she had been so mentally clouded by An Zhaoyu’s sudden counter-attack. Was it because of the sun? Every time An Zhaoyu appeared, the scene seemed to be in full color, bright and vivid.
“Are you spacing out?” Wen Xuan’s tone held a hint of a test.
Lu Shen paused, withdrew her thoughts, and slowly pushed the suppressant from the syringe into Wen Xuan’s gland. To play the role of an Alpha well, this Omega wore very heroic makeup and acted with Alpha-like casualness and boldness, ignoring the pain brought by the specialized suppressant.
“Is there a way to accelerate the effects of Wei Ruicheng’s medicine?” Wen Xuan likely had things to do, so she didn’t press Lu Shen on her distraction.
“No.”
That medicine wasn’t developed by Lu Shen; it was one of Lu Ming’s unfinished experimental products. Years ago, Wei Ruicheng found a way to steal and consume it. The side effects were massive; it was painful when it acted, and it truly shortened his lifespan.
During his first episode, Wei Ruicheng thought the medicine was failing and sought out Lu Shen. She gave him some painkillers and caffeine, which made him feel much better. He assumed the painkiller was also a rank-boosting drug; Lu Shen simply went along with it and didn’t deny it. Regardless, Lu Congwen would always make her see Wei Ruicheng, and Lu Shen didn’t want to start any new topics with him.
“What a pity,” Wen Xuan said, putting her hair back down and returning to her original posture after the injection.
It was indeed a pity. Lu Shen had no interest in researching pheromone-related drugs; all her energy was focused on Omega suppressants—unlike her genius-madman mother, who dared to create anything. This specialized suppressant was also Lu Ming’s work; besides inhibiting the heat, it could disguise soft Omega pheromones as sharp Alpha ones.
A top medical genius in glandular health, an SSS-rank biochemist… Lu Ming was actually an Omega as well.
“You won’t forget CF-9507, right?” Wen Xuan stared intently at the Beta doctor. Lu Shen was truly a girl born to two Omegas.
“Of course not.”
CF-9507 was the flight number of Jiang Nian’s ill-fated plane. Lu Shen would never forget it for the rest of her life.
