After the Divorce, My Wife Is Impossible to Coax - Chapter 5
Chapter 5
When the doorbell rang, An Changguo was still discussing with He Nanchun whether the paternity test could be a mistake, while An Wenyao remained on the sofa, maintaining his posture of glaring at An Zhaoyu.
“It’s Lu Shen,” An Zhaoyu told them, seemingly unbothered by the chaos she was causing.
Hearing that Lu Shen was coming, An Changguo and He Nanchun were caught off guard. They stared at each other in a daze, while An Wenyao reflexively stood up, straightening his suit and tie and checking his reflection in his phone.
An Zhaoyu remained seated, her chin resting on her hand as she watched her brother’s futile efforts.
Lu Shen’s past few days hadn’t been peaceful either. Her grandmother’s persistent calls gave her no rest, and her aunt had even come over specifically to ask about the situation. To show the family’s seriousness, Lu Shen’s grandmother, Ye Jinhua, and her aunt, Lu Yi, had both come along, bringing gifts of incredibly expensive and rare medicinal herbs.
The An family held the venerable elder of traditional Chinese medicine in high regard and hurried to welcome the Lu family inside.
“Hello, in-laws!” Ye Jinhua, Lu Shen’s grandmother, had a very cheerful personality. She was no stranger to An Zhaoyu’s mother, He Nanchun; the two had originally planned for An Wenyao and Lu Shen to go on a blind date next month.
The transition from son to daughter, and Alpha to Omega, was slightly unexpected, but for Ye Jinhua, it was a miracle dropped from the sky. The old lady hadn’t slept for several nights—she was too busy being happy.
“…Hello, Elder Ye.” An Changguo and He Nanchun were a bit awkward, especially with An Wenyao standing right there. His gaze was fixed on Lu Shen, his face slightly flushed. Seeing her again, he couldn’t help but feel his heart flutter; she was even more his ideal partner now than in their student days.
Lu Yi handed over the gifts, which An Changguo received personally. The two nodded in greeting.
Lu Shen walked behind Ye Jinhua and Lu Yi. An Changguo sized up the Beta girl who had supposedly infatuated his Alpha son and prompted his Omega daughter to demand a marking.
Lu Shen was very beautiful, with long, straight black hair that reached just past her shoulder blades. She was intellectual and elegant, yet possessed a gentle charm. Her slender arms emerged from a light, crisp white dress. After greeting the parents, she stood quietly to the side. Standing next to the tall, handsome An Wenyao, they looked like a perfect match.
She truly was the ideal partner for an Alpha. An Changguo, who had a sharp eye for character, noted that Lu Shen possessed an effortless, calm attraction—a perfect blend of gentleness and cool detachment. Even if she stood there saying nothing, people couldn’t help but focus on her.
Alas, how did things turn out like this? An Changguo sighed inwardly. A quiet, beautiful girl like Lu Shen and his gentle, gentlemanly son would have been a perfect pair, yet she had been “kidnapped” by his rebellious, unpredictable daughter.
He Nanchun was also very satisfied with Lu Shen as a potential daughter-in-law, but she wasn’t used to the partner being An Zhaoyu instead of An Wenyao. She knew her daughter; An Zhaoyu had been restless since childhood. Whatever she wanted, she got. Even as an Omega, nothing could stop her from becoming a pilot in a field almost entirely dominated by Alphas. Someone as gentle as Lu Shen might not be able to handle her.
“Hello, Grandma. Hello, Aunt,” An Zhaoyu said with a smile, walking to Lu Shen’s other side to greet the elders.
An SSS-rank Omega might not always project charm, but when they do, age and gender don’t matter. With a gentle smile, An Zhaoyu looked quite well-behaved, though her pilot uniform gave her a heroic, upright posture. With a flick of her long hair, she commanded the entire room’s aura.
“Xiao Yu is so beautiful,” Ye Jinhua said with genuine affection. On one hand, the girl was striking—her iconic burgundy curls were very sexy, her eyes were round and cute, and she was bright and lively, exactly the type of junior elders loved. On the other hand, the fact that she had managed to break Lu Shen’s “single since birth” streak was a miracle in itself.
An Zhaoyu glanced at her parents, her chin slightly tilted in a gesture that said: See? Lu Shen and I are also a great match.
Caught between their two children, An Changguo and He Nanchun fell into silence.
Lu Yi raised an eyebrow. This Omega was very proud, somewhat domineering, and had a flamboyant personality. She glanced at her niece; she couldn’t imagine how someone like that could get along with Lu Shen’s quiet, indifferent nature.
“Here is the situation,” Ye Jinhua broke the ice. “Since Xiao Yu plans to keep the child, and our family really wants a baby, and since neither Xiao Yu nor Shen Shen has a partner, why don’t they try dating?”
“Dating? That won’t do. If they plan to have a child, they must get married.” An Changguo frowned. Either the child was removed and they went their separate ways, or it stayed and they provided a complete family. Otherwise, who knew what people would whisper behind An Zhaoyu’s back?
“Marriage? I don’t agree!” An Wenyao was the first to protest. He didn’t support An Zhaoyu having the child at all. The child was an accident, and An Zhaoyu herself was like a child who hadn’t grown up. Her pursuit of Lu Shen was likely just a whim.
“I agree,” An Zhaoyu said, looking at Lu Shen.
“Haha…” Now it was Ye Jinhua’s turn to be awkward. She hadn’t expected both siblings to be so interested in their Lu Shen.
As An Changguo dragged An Wenyao into the study, Ye Jinhua whispered to the ceiling, “Mercy, mercy.” She felt truly sorry for inadvertently destroying the harmony of their household.
“This matter… we still need to ask for Xiao Yu’s grandmother’s opinion,” He Nanchun said, looking at Ye Jinhua with hesitation.
Although He Linghan was very respectful of the Lu family’s medical expertise, marriage was a different story. He Linghan placed great value on her Omega descendants. If Lu Shen were marrying an Alpha like An Wenyao, He Linghan might have even stepped in to act as the matchmaker. But An Zhaoyu and Lu Shen… the An family wasn’t sure of her stance. After all, when Wei Jinlin tried to pursue An Zhaoyu, He Linghan had been furious and told him to get out. Even An Changguo didn’t dare arrange An Zhaoyu’s marriage without permission, fearing his mother-in-law’s wrath.
“Elder Ye, you know Wei Jinlin, right? He’s been trying to pursue Xiao Yu, but my mother doesn’t allow it. That boy doesn’t dare get close to her, but he also won’t let any other Alpha near her,” He Nanchun explained. They had all seen He Linghan’s birthday party where Wei Ruicheng brought Wei Jinlin.
Ye Jinhua showed an expected expression and took a phone from Lu Yi. “I can handle Xiao Yu’s grandmother.” She dialed He Linghan’s number right then and there.
Ring— Ring—
An Changguo swallowed hard, terrified that He Linghan would explode. His mother-in-law did not have a good temper, especially toward sons-in-law. It was normal for her to scold them when displeased, and physical altercations weren’t out of the question. She kept An Changguo on a very tight leash, and presumably, Wei Ruicheng was treated the same.
“Elder Ye, what wind has blown you my way?” He Linghan’s smiling voice came through the phone.
“Well, recently your Xiao Yu has ended up with my Shen Shen’s child. What do you think about them getting married?”
There was silence on the other end.
It seemed An Zhaoyu’s weight in He Linghan’s heart was quite significant. Ye Jinhua held the phone with a relaxed smile, her other hand resting comfortably on the sofa arm. She hadn’t even mentioned to He Linghan yet that the child had been “conceived” at the He estate.
An Changguo and He Nanchun were far from relaxed. They exchanged nervous glances, and sweat began to bead on An Changguo’s forehead. This Elder Ye is bold, he thought. She had dropped a landmine on He Linghan immediately. Even if he and his wife had gone in person, they would have had to beat around the bush for hours.
Ye Jinhua slowly looked up and smiled at An Zhaoyu, as if saying: Repeat what you said that night.
“Grandmother,” An Zhaoyu said into the speakerphone.
“Is Xiao Yu there too?” He Linghan asked.
“I am,” An Zhaoyu sat down next to Ye Jinhua. “Grandmother, I’m pregnant. The baby is Lu Shen’s.”
“Do you want to marry her?”
“Mm,” An Zhaoyu glanced at Lu Shen again. The doctor still had no expression. “I’ll bring her to see you next time I visit.”
Lu Shen’s right eyelid flickered.
“Fine. I agree to this marriage.” Hearing no reluctance in An Zhaoyu’s voice, He Linghan’s tone became cheerful again.
The weight in everyone’s heart finally lifted. Ye Jinhua stole a glance at her granddaughter. Lu Shen didn’t seem to reject the marriage, which made the old lady breathe a sigh of relief.
“By the way… what does the other Doctor Lu think of this?” After a moment of hesitation, An Changguo asked the question buried deep in his heart.
By “Doctor Lu,” he didn’t mean Lu Shen, but Lu Shen’s mother, Lu Ming. Despite the presence of Ye Jinhua and Lu Yi, Lu Ming had not appeared.
The atmosphere instantly became even more tense than when they were waiting for He Linghan. The smile vanished from Ye Jinhua’s face, and the aura around Lu Yi turned heavy. Only Lu Shen remained standing gently, while An Zhaoyu watched her thoughtfully. Lu Ming hadn’t appeared at the birthday banquet either.
There were many rumors regarding Lu Ming. Her status as a genius scientist was indisputable, given her published papers, but she herself was a mystery. There were once three guesses about her gender: Beta, top-tier Alpha, or even Omega. These guesses were only settled after Lu Shen was born, as Lu Shen’s other mother, Jiang Nian, was 100% an Omega, making Lu Ming an Alpha by default.
Jiang Nian was also a mystery. Aside from being a foreign Omega, no one knew anything about her—a fact evidenced by Lu Shen’s blue eyes. Lu Ming had been abroad for years, and her first return to the country was with Jiang Nian and Lu Shen. Afterwards, the couple traveled the world, and no one knew where they went. Since then, some said Lu Ming had “lost her genius” and could no longer produce new research.
When Lu Shen was studying abroad, the plane Jiang Nian was on crashed. Her DNA was found among the remains salvaged from the sea. Since then, no one had heard from Lu Ming. Some said she had gone mad and was locked in a psychiatric hospital in S City—she was a genius, after all, and her research often pushed ethical boundaries. Others said she had committed suicide out of grief, but the Lu family hid her death because she still had value.
He Linghan had invited the entire Lu family that day, but Lu Ming had not responded. Lu Ming had become a silent secret in S City that no one mentioned in front of the Lu family.
If it weren’t for the importance of the marriage, An Changguo wouldn’t have asked. Lu Ming was Lu Shen’s mother, and An Zhaoyu and the child would inevitably have to interact with her.
“Mother agrees,” Lu Shen’s gentle, shallow smile broke the deadlock.
“That’s good,” An Changguo and He Nanchun said, dropping the subject for now. There would be plenty of time later.
“Did you plan this all along?” After the Lu family left, An Wenyao couldn’t help but storm into An Zhaoyu’s room. “You want to marry Lu Shen?”
“Mm,” An Zhaoyu admitted frankly. From the moment she discovered she was pregnant, she knew her family’s personality—if she wanted the child, she had to marry.
“And the marking?”
“A spur-of-the-moment decision,” An Zhaoyu said, tilting her head.
Lu Shen had been too calm that day. Facing SSS-rank pheromones, she was so calm it was annoying—as if the narcissus scent wasn’t even as important as the bowl of rice she had put down. Even during the marking, Lu Shen’s eyes had remained clear. Even with the most seductive Omega in her grasp, there wasn’t a trace of lust in her gaze. It was as if she were truly just acting as a source of artificial pheromones because An Zhaoyu had smashed the only suppressant.
She maintained a cool detachment, leaving no opening for others. It was infuriating. An Zhaoyu hated being ignored. Truly hated it.
“You clearly knew I liked her,” An Wenyao collapsed onto the sofa. He never imagined Lu Shen would end up marrying his Omega sister.
“But she doesn’t like you, Brother.” An Zhaoyu felt no guilt.
“She doesn’t like you either!” An Wenyao roared in a low voice.
“So what?” An Zhaoyu leaned in, her tone a bit provocative. “I have her child. You don’t.”
At this point, An Wenyao buried his face in his hands, filled with regret. He never should have asked her to chase Lu Shen in the first place!
The wedding date for the two families was set. Not wanting to see them get married, the miserable An Wenyao packed his things and prepared to leave home to “cool off.”
“Brother, you forgot your car keys,” An Zhaoyu said, specifically handing them to him at the door.
Knowing she meant no good, An Wenyao glared at her, snatched the keys, and left. The siblings were officially at odds.
