After the Divorce, My Wife Is Impossible to Coax - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
The air seemed to freeze for about twenty seconds. Before Lu Shen could speak, her grandmother’s excited, voice-cracking shout came through the phone: “My dear granddaughter! Who is pregnant with a child?!”
Beep—
Lu Shen instinctively cut the call.
“These are the results from today’s examination.” Without giving her much time to react, An Zhaoyu pulled several forms from her coat pocket—the HCG report and an abdominal ultrasound. The ultrasound indicated a six-week-old gestational sac in the uterus.
It matched the timing of their marking perfectly.
Finding a brightly lit, open space, Lu Shen lowered her head and began reading the reports one by one. An Zhaoyu observed her expression. If Lu Shen showed even the slightest hint of rejection, then…
Then she would still have the child.
An Zhaoyu had never planned on having children, but once she confirmed the other mother was Lu Shen, the prospect of a child suddenly made her feel quite pleasant. A child was one thing, but a beautiful child was another. Who doesn’t like a beautiful child? Lu Shen’s entire family had high aesthetics and high IQs; what was wrong with craving Lu Shen’s genes?
The child was hers; she could have it if she wanted it. It didn’t necessarily have to do with Lu Shen. To some extent, she was just here to notify her.
“Do you want it?” Lu Shen asked after a moment of silence, her expression neutral.
“Yes,” An Zhaoyu replied lightheartedly.
“Then let’s have it,” Lu Shen said, putting the reports in her pocket.
It was a casual sentence, much like pointing at a head of cabbage in a market and saying, “I’ll take this one.”
An Zhaoyu smiled and nodded. This was within her expectations. Aside from everything else, the Lu family had an excellent reputation in the industry. With Lu Shen’s promise, An Zhaoyu at least didn’t have to worry about the child being neglected later.
“Follow me,” Lu Shen said, turning her back and tilting her head slightly.
“For what?” An Zhaoyu thought things were settled for the night.
“To do another check,” Lu Shen said, heading toward the inpatient building.
A check? An Zhaoyu thought about it. She had already done all the necessary pregnancy tests at the hospital in S City today and had just given Lu Shen the results. Could it be that Lu Shen didn’t believe the child was hers?
“I’ve only been marked by you,” An Zhaoyu said, feeling a bit annoyed, but she explained patiently nonetheless.
After all, this sounded quite fantastical. A Beta and an Omega conceiving without any assisted reproductive technology was enough to make the news.
“Mm.”
What kind of answer is that? An Zhaoyu sneered inwardly. She followed behind Lu Shen, keeping a distance of two people, clearly dissatisfied with the response. If it were anyone else finding out An Zhaoyu was carrying their baby, they wouldn’t act like this dead-faced Doctor Lu.
The inpatient department at night was much quieter than during the day. Lu Shen led An Zhaoyu to the imaging department and called a familiar colleague to come in for overtime.
“If you’d come any later, I would’ve been asleep,” the colleague said, yawning while putting on a white coat. He froze when he saw the Omega behind her. “Captain An? What kind of check do you need?”
An Zhaoyu nodded and looked at Lu Shen, her voice slightly sarcastic. “You’ll have to ask Doctor Lu.”
“A pelvic MRI. For both her and me,” Lu Shen paused, then added, “She’s pregnant.”
She’s getting checked too? An Zhaoyu was surprised. Could an Omega make a Beta pregnant?
“An MRI… is best done after three months,” the radiologist was stunned. This was explosive news—An Zhaoyu was pregnant, and the child was…?
“I know the risks of an MRI,” Lu Shen replied calmly. No one knew that the undershirt beneath her coat was already soaked with sweat. She hoped An Zhaoyu would be okay.
“Alright… take off all metal objects.”
There was only one office in the imaging department, with the air conditioning set to a comfortable temperature. An Zhaoyu and Lu Shen were in there together. Usually, patients changed into examination gowns beforehand, but they weren’t prepared. Since bra clasps contain metal, they couldn’t wear them. The radiologist gave them two sets of disposable gowns.
An Zhaoyu wanted to ask Lu Shen what she was up to, but Lu Shen remained silent, turning her back to undress.
An Zhaoyu noticed the sweat-drenched white undershirt. She wasn’t foolish enough to think Lu Shen had suddenly started sweating in this room; was she actually terrified by the news of the child?
Lu Shen’s hair was straight and long, completely covering her upper back. An Zhaoyu could only see the shallow groove of her spine disappearing into her waistband and the sleek, tight lines of her waist.
Sensing the gaze behind her, Lu Shen’s body stiffened for a moment. An Zhaoyu let out a low laugh. Intentional.
When it came to Lu Shen, she didn’t plan on playing fair. She watched Lu Shen change while changing herself, fully confident Lu Shen wouldn’t turn around.
Lu Shen knew the person behind her wasn’t following social etiquette by turning away, but fortunately, the gown was large enough to cover her. She slowly unbuttoned her waist.
If An Zhaoyu became infertile because of her… she didn’t know how she would face that fact. But it shouldn’t be possible. Lu Shen frowned slightly and finished changing under that intense gaze.
After changing, she didn’t turn around. She waited for An Zhaoyu. An Zhaoyu was occupying the space near the door—the only way out. Lu Shen could feel An Zhaoyu’s dissatisfaction; she was being punished.
After a while, just as Lu Shen was about to ask, she heard the door open. When she turned around, An Zhaoyu had already left the room.
As expected.
Usually, MRI results take hours to discuss, but Lu Shen didn’t need a report; she only needed the images.
“Everything looks normal,” the radiologist said, enlarging the images on the monitor.
Lu Shen looked at An Zhaoyu’s scans first, carefully examining the Omega’s reproductive system. Fortunately, there were no symptoms of germ cell fusion or atrophy. Lu Shen let out a visible sigh of relief, which An Zhaoyu caught.
This kind of imaging can’t distinguish paternity, can it? An Zhaoyu was confused. If she just wanted to confirm the pregnancy, an ultrasound was plenty.
Lu Shen’s images were also normal; she wasn’t carrying An Zhaoyu’s child. In the current world, there was no assisted reproductive drug that could allow an Omega to get someone else pregnant. Lu Shen should know that.
“Let’s go.”
It was very late by the time they left. Lu Shen took her car keys out, intending to drive An Zhaoyu home.
“No paternity test?” “I don’t plan on it.”
Lu Shen never doubted An Zhaoyu’s words. If An Zhaoyu had been marked by an Alpha, she never would have come to a Beta first.
“Well, I plan on it now,” An Zhaoyu said.
Lu Shen turned to look at her.
“It’s for my parents and brother,” An Zhaoyu said. Her anger had already dissipated. Others might not truly believe the child belonged to Lu Shen.
The two went to the lab. The lab technician was woken from bed, and like the radiologist, was shocked into full alertness by the news. Without them even asking, the technician offered to do the paternity test.
It wasn’t hard to imagine how much gossip this would generate. Lu Shen had chosen colleagues who were tight-lipped and trustworthy, and the Medical Center wasn’t in S City.
Paternity tests take longer than imaging—involving DNA extraction, PCR, and fluorescence labeling. It would take three to five days.
Those few days were agonizing for the An family. They looked at An Zhaoyu as if they had something to say but couldn’t. An Zhaoyu, however, was calm, even going to work as usual.
Just as He Nanchun was about to cave and tell He Linghan, the paternity results were finally delivered to An Zhaoyu.
Even though she was prepared, seeing the result—that the child shared half of Lu Shen’s genes—made An Zhaoyu marvel at how miraculous it was. Were the Lu family’s genes just that powerful? Granted, she was an SSS-rank Omega with naturally high fertility, but that was for Alphas. Lu Shen was just a Beta, and they had only done a temporary mark once. Even Alphas couldn’t always manage that.
A copy of the results was also sent to Lu Shen. She took the envelope into Lu Yi’s office.
“Aunt, is the reason I’m like this related to my mothers?”
Lu Yi, dressed in a sharp black suit, stood up from her desk and patted Lu Shen’s shoulder. “Relax, Shen Shen. No matter what, you and An Zhaoyu are fine. Don’t think too much.”
“I just can’t help it.” Lu Shen’s gaze drifted to the sky outside, her ice-blue eyes tinged with sadness.
“What? You’re going to have the child?” The An family couldn’t understand. To put it nicely, the child was a beautiful accident; to put it bluntly, it was a “wild” child from nowhere. “Tell us first, who is the other parent? Which family’s Alpha?”
“Lu Shen,” An Zhaoyu didn’t intend to hide it.
“Who?!” An Wenyao’s voice shot up immediately.
“The child is Lu Shen’s. Last time at Grandma’s birthday, my heat came early. I went to Lu Shen’s room to find her,” An Zhaoyu said calmly and seriously. “I asked her to give me a temporary mark.”
“Are you crazy?” The blood seemed to rush to An Wenyao’s head instantly. His face turned red, his gaze sharp.
“Xiao Yu, what have you done? Anyone else would have been better to mark you, why did it have to be Lu Shen?” He Nanchun couldn’t understand either. Setting aside that Lu Shen was a Beta, she was the object of An Wenyao’s affection—An Zhaoyu knew this better than anyone.
An Changguo’s brow furrowed into a mountain. He clearly didn’t want to believe it. “How can you and Lu Shen have a child?”
“It is Lu Shen.” An Zhaoyu had nothing to explain. She showed them the paternity results.
Proximity leads to desire; it’s only human. Why couldn’t she choose Lu Shen?
“Did Lu Shen take the initiative to mark you?” An Wenyao struggled. He had considered the possibility of failing to pursue Lu Shen, but never a result like this.
“She wanted to give me a suppressant,” An Zhaoyu said, tilting her head as she recalled the scene. “But I smashed the suppressant.”
As soon as she spoke, An Wenyao’s rough hand grabbed her collar. Her tone was too casual; An Wenyao was triggered by her nonchalance. “What did you take her for?!”
“Wenyao, don’t you dare touch your sister!” Their parents rushed to pull him back. The strength gap between an Alpha and an Omega was huge, and An Zhaoyu was pregnant.
An Zhaoyu met his eyes without a hint of guilt. To each according to their ability.
Lu Shen’s pheromones were much more effective than suppressants. A Beta’s pheromones weren’t aggressive and wouldn’t forcefully suppress an Omega; An Zhaoyu liked them very much.
An Wenyao was held back on the sofa by his parents. He glared at the Omega across the coffee table, the veins in his temples throbbing. He knew his sister better than anyone. Their parents might not understand, but he knew exactly what she was thinking: she had used Lu Shen as a free suppressant, and she felt zero remorse.
“An Xiao Yu, you really are a bastard.”
Is that all it takes? An Zhaoyu blinked innocently. Her phone vibrated.
It was likely Lu Shen’s family coming over for a visit.
