After the Divorce, My Wife Is Impossible to Coax - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Constant flying is An Zhaoyu’s duty; wherever animals or people need help, the search and rescue team is there.
However, Captain An, who had only been flying for four hours today, was already beginning to feel exhausted. She even nearly closed her eyes mid-flight—not a good omen. Refusing to drive (or fly) while fatigued, she immediately requested the afternoon off upon landing to go home and rest properly.
“Have you had breakfast yet?” Her father and brother were busy and not at home. Her full-time Omega mother, He Nanchun, had the domestic helper prepare some of her favorite dishes.
“I had a piece of toast,” An Zhaoyu replied listlessly. “I don’t have much of an appetite.”
No appetite? He Nanchun looked surprised. An Zhaoyu had always been very indulgent when it came to food. While other Omegas dieted to lose weight, she never did, fearing she wouldn’t have the strength to fly. She ate as much as she could, though she rarely gained weight.
Looking at the table full of dishes the helper had worked hard on, the well-bred Captain An forced herself to take a few bites.
“I heard Lu Shen is also working at the International Rescue Center. Keep an eye out for your brother when you’re free, so she doesn’t get snatched up by another Alpha,” He Nanchun said with a smile, helping her daughter to some food. “I talked to Lu Shen’s grandmother last time. Lu Shen doesn’t usually participate in social events; she spends most of her time on work.”
Despite being a Beta, Lu Shen was highly sought after by Alphas of all the major families. Her grandmother was a veteran pillar of Chinese medicine, and her mother, Lu Ming, was a world-class pheromone expert, biochemist, and a genius doctor in glandular health. Lu Ming’s papers could be found in almost every top medical journal; she even invented the world’s first painless Omega suppressant. Before that, suppressants were a form of torture for Omegas.
Lu Shen’s medical expertise inherited her mother’s brilliance, and she excelled in other areas as well. Whether in looks or temperament, she didn’t lose out to even the most glamorous Omegas. Even a catch like An Wenyao was still stuck in a long line waiting for his turn.
“Oh,” An Zhaoyu raised an eyebrow slightly. Lu Shen hadn’t been snatched by another Alpha yet.
She had just slept with her last month.
Thinking about it, if Lu Shen really married her brother in the future, then they… what would they be? The thought of Lu Shen becoming her sister-in-law felt like a jagged stone in An Zhaoyu’s chest—distinct and very uncomfortable.
“Remember how you used to help your brother chase Lu Shen?” He Nanchun seemed lost in a memory. “That was back in high school, right?”
“Don’t remember,” An Zhaoyu shook her head repeatedly, not wanting to bring up the past.
She had shared a night of passion with Lu Shen not long ago; bringing this up felt awkward. She could hardly say she had “helped” her brother by getting into bed with her herself.
Recalling the scene of that day, An Zhaoyu subtly swallowed her unchewed food. It was a nostalgic memory that occasionally reappeared in her dreams lately: a forest of greenery nourishing a whole field of narcissus—it was a feast for the senses.
Doing it again wouldn’t be out of the question; being “bitten” by Lu Shen wasn’t a losing deal. Her gaze darkened at the thought.
“Your memory is terrible. She’s an old classmate, how could you forget her so fast?” He Nanchun dragged her back from her unspoken memories. “If Lu Shen becomes your sister-in-law in the future—”
“Ugh—” A wave of nausea surged up. An Zhaoyu clutched her stomach, wanting to retch.
“What’s wrong?” He Nanchun was startled.
Unable to speak, An Zhaoyu rushed into the bathroom. Her stomach was churning, and she vomited everything she had just eaten, including the digestive fluids from her morning toast.
“Xiao Yu, are you okay? What happened?” Seeing her deathly pale face, He Nanchun began to panic.
“I don’t know,” An Zhaoyu said tiredly, wiping her mouth with a wet tissue and cleaning up the scene.
“Are you sick?” He Nanchun walked over and felt her forehead. “Let’s go to the hospital.”
An Zhaoyu was usually very healthy and rarely got sick. When she did, the whole family got nervous.
“Okay.”
The driver took them to a nearby hospital. In the emergency room, the doctor asked a few questions and did a quick physical check before sending her to do a urine HCG test.
Isn’t that the indicator for pregnancy? He Nanchun was anxious. “She’s not married yet, is there a mistake?”
This situation was common; the doctor said nothing more but insisted on the HCG test first.
“Let’s just do it quickly so we can move on to the next test,” He Nanchun didn’t take it seriously. It wasn’t that An Zhaoyu was a perfect “good girl,” but rather that she had never shown interest in any Alpha her whole life. Plus, Wei Jinlin—that arrogant, thuggish Alpha—liked An Zhaoyu and wouldn’t let any other Alpha get close to her. An Zhaoyu had never stayed out overnight or left the An family’s sight long enough to be marked. How could she possibly be marked by an Alpha in private?
In the bathroom, An Zhaoyu held the pregnancy test, her heart drumming. It couldn’t be that accurate, could it? Lu Shen only gave her a temporary mark, and she was a Beta.
When the two bright red lines appeared on the stick, An Zhaoyu was speechless. It was that accurate.
“What? Two lines!” He Nanchun nearly blacked out and fainted.
“Case closed, it’s pregnancy. Go find the father,” the doctor said with a smile. “It might be hyperemesis gravidarum. When you go home, avoid smells that trigger vomiting, eat small meals frequently, and take some vitamins. If the vomiting gets severe, I suggest coming back for inpatient treatment.”
“Who is it? Which Alpha bastard?” The normally mild-tempered He Nanchun actually roared.
An Zhaoyu said nothing, silently digesting the fact that she was pregnant. Should she let Lu Shen know? Lu Shen surely wouldn’t expect this either. An Omega and a Beta… and Lu Shen hadn’t even told her to take any contraceptives.
A major crisis had occurred: the family’s “golden white cabbage” had been stolen. Her father and brother were called back for an emergency meeting.
“Who is it?” An Changguo’s voice was low and suppressed, like the calm before a storm.
“Xiao Yu, which Alpha do you like that I don’t know about? Is it Wei Jinlin?” An Wenyao took off his suit jacket, hanging it behind the door. “I thought you didn’t like him?”
“Wei Jinlin? He wouldn’t dare!” He Nanchun was furious. Wei Jinlin was the “wild grass” born of the mistress who destroyed her sister’s family; neither the He nor the An family thought much of him or the Omega his father had remarried.
The three family members waited for An Zhaoyu to speak, as if the moment she uttered a name, they were ready to swarm and eliminate the person, regardless of what planet that Alpha was from. There were no permanent marking scars on her body; if some Alpha had laid a hand on her they shouldn’t have, they had ways to punish him. At worst, she could have an abortion. In the An family’s values, there was no such thing as “settling” for a bad situation.
“Give me a little time,” An Zhaoyu looked haggard, but her tone was very calm.
Before telling them, she had to talk to Lu Shen first. After all, Lu Shen was the mother of the child; she had the right to know before anyone else.
“…Fine. You rest first, don’t think too much.” Realizing they were pushing too hard and not considering her feelings, the family quieted down.
Given the An family’s status in S City, no Alpha would dare force An Zhaoyu. An Changguo and He Nanchun belatedly realized a possibility—perhaps An Zhaoyu had been the proactive one.
“Don’t worry, the family won’t make you marry someone you don’t like,” An Wenyao comforted her. “Once I find out who it is, I’ll deal with him for you!”
An Zhaoyu nodded, then couldn’t help but look at him one more time. I hope you keep your word.
After dinner that evening, she changed into a casual black padded coat and drove to the Rescue Center.
“Captain An, coming to the center so late?” colleagues greeted her.
“Is Doctor Lu still here?” An Zhaoyu asked a search and rescue team member, pointing toward the brightly lit inpatient building.
“Yes, she is. I think Dr. Lu was just about to get off work.” Though he didn’t know why the Captain was asking for Dr. Lu, the member answered honestly.
Without her uniform, An Zhaoyu looked quite peaceful, her head slightly lowered in thought. Her vibrant, flashy red hair was tucked neatly inside her coat, making her look more like the delicate Omega from people’s impressions.
The team member couldn’t help but steal a few looks. By tomorrow morning, when the Captain put on her thick uniform, she’d be back to barking orders without catching a breath. Who would be lucky enough to have this gentle, non-uniformed Captain? That was the dream of every Alpha in the medical center.
“Okay,” An Zhaoyu walked toward the inpatient department.
Just as Lu Shen walked out of the building, her phone rang. It was her grandmother. Lu Shen answered, her blue eyes flickering with a slight smile. “Hello, Grandma.”
“My dear granddaughter, tomorrow’s dinner is set at the Lu Mansion Hotel on Academy South Road. He’s a super handsome foreign Alpha model. Want to see a photo first? You might just fall for him.”
“No,” the smile in Lu Shen’s eyes froze at the mention of a blind date. Just hearing about it felt more exhausting than pulling a double shift.
“You’ve been working too long; you have no time to feel the world’s joy. You have to live in the moment! We don’t have to aim for marriage; dating just to nourish your mind and body is fine too.” Her grandmother was very open-minded in this regard, wishing Lu Shen would date ten people at once. Being a Beta was so great—no pheromone or marking restrictions!
“I have a paper to write,” Lu Shen tried to resist.
“I told you not to study medicine! There’s no end to papers. Grandma really wants to hold a great-grandchild! Of all the old ladies in the courtyard, I’m the only one without one!” Seeing the logical route was a dead end, her grandmother switched to an emotional appeal.
Lu Shen remained silent, not knowing how to refuse. At this moment, she suddenly missed her parents more than usual. Her grandmother seemed to sense it and brought the topic back.
“I don’t care, just go on a date first. Give Grandma a glimmer of hope.” The voice from the receiver was particularly clear in the silent night. Whether there were children or not didn’t really matter; her grandmother truly just wanted Lu Shen to date rather than burying herself in work all day.
“I know,” Lu Shen said helplessly. Looking up, she saw someone standing under a tree. She didn’t know how long the person had been there. An Zhaoyu’s office was in a different department; Lu Shen rarely saw her outside of work hours and naturally assumed there was an issue.
“Grandma, wait a moment. It seems a colleague is looking for me.”
Colleague? A “colleague” she had slept with but hadn’t spoken to in over a month?
Having heard most of the conversation between Lu Shen and her grandmother, An Zhaoyu felt like laughing. Fortuitously, Lu Shen’s call was still connected. With unknown intent, An Zhaoyu deliberately walked up to Lu Shen and spoke slowly and clearly, loud enough for the person on the other end of the phone to hear perfectly.
“Lu Shen, I’m pregnant. The child is yours.”
