- Chapter 7 - The Scumbag
Is she talking to me? Ning Qi looked left and right, but she really couldn’t find a second possible candidate in the vicinity.
“Miss Qin has a sharp eye!” Ning Qi walked over gracefully, sat down opposite Qin Shi with her bag, and said with a smile, “So Miss Qin had already spotted me!”
And here she thought Qin Shi hadn’t seen her when she turned around earlier! That level of observation was truly admirable; Ning Qi even felt a momentary suspicion that Qin Shi had installed a surveillance camera on her person.
“Actually, I’m quite curious—how did Miss Qin see me?” They had only met once before, and Qin Shi had been sitting with her back to her!
Qin Shi merely smiled, declining to answer. A waitress walked over, and Qin Shi lowered her head to say something to her. The waitress quickly called someone else over to clear the bowls and plates from the table one by one.
“Have you eaten?” Qin Shi asked suddenly, waiting until the table was cleared.
“Why wouldn’t I have?” Ning Qi felt the question was a bit odd. She had come here to try her luck at seeing Qin Shi, but she had also come to eat.
Yes, even if she hadn’t run into Qin Shi today, Ning Qi would have eaten out. Over the past few days, Ning Qi had learned how to make porridge. After wasting quite a bit of rice, she had eventually mastered steaming rice too, but cooking actual dishes was a massive headache!
Ning Qi had tried to learn, but stir-frying was truly difficult for her. She didn’t suffer from the classic novel trope of being unable to distinguish sugar from salt, nor did she mix up vinegar and soy sauce.
She didn’t burn the food to a crisp, nor did she accidentally turn a stir-fry into a soup by adding too much water. However, every time a dish came out, it either lacked salt or had too much vinegar. On the rare occasions where the seasoning was just right, she felt like something was missing—likely because she couldn’t control the heat of the stove properly.
In short, stir-frying was too hard, and she was terrified that her hand would shake and hot oil would splash onto her face. Of course, failure is the mother of success. After many trials, Ning Qi could finally stomach a few plates of her own vegetarian stir-fries, but she didn’t want to eat vegetables every single day! Therefore, she decided that until she successfully mastered cooking, it was better to eat out.
“I thought Miss Ning was so busy watching the show that she didn’t have time to eat,” Qin Shi remarked.
Even though Ning Qi hadn’t received a formal education due to her past illness, she could tell exactly what Qin Shi meant.
“Miss Qin, you’re overthinking it,” Ning Qi replied with a smile, despite the many thoughts swirling in her head. “Eating is such an important matter; how could I forget? One can forget anything, but never a meal.”
Qin Shi nodded after she finished, turned to the waitress to say something else, and then asked, “Would you like something to drink?”
“Anything is fine,” Ning Qi thought for a moment and added, “Something sour, perhaps.” She wasn’t entirely sure what was on the menu. A moment later, the waitress brought out desserts and drinks.
“Wow,” Ning Qi’s eyes lit up at the sight of the desserts. She said to Qin Shi, “This is wonderful!”
Qin Shi smiled, watching her eat happily before getting down to business. “Miss Ning Qi, I suppose I should be calling you Mrs. Lu, shouldn’t I?”
“I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare.” Ning Qi waved her hands frantically, though she was startled inwardly. After just one meeting, she had apparently earned a spot on Qin Shi’s radar. This habit of investigating people at the drop of a hat was quite similar to a “Dominant CEO” like Lu Mingze!
“Miss Ning misunderstood.” Qin Shi guessed Ning Qi’s thoughts from her expression. “We’ve met once before.” It seemed she didn’t remember.
I’ve met Qin Shi before? Ning Qi didn’t know; she didn’t have the original owner’s memories. Perhaps they had met at the funeral when Father Lu passed away?
For Qin Shi, the current Ning Qi was so different that she hadn’t made the connection during their meeting a few days ago. “And, Miss Ning, have you forgotten about the existence of the internet?”
Am I famous on the internet? That shouldn’t be right. Ning Qi recalled the descriptions in the original book—hardly anyone knew Lu Mingze had a wife!
Ning Qi pondered: If I really was exposed online, wouldn’t Lu Mingze’s brain-dead fans flame me to death? She had searched for Lu Mingze online recently, mainly to see what kind of “existence” the male lead was in this world. There weren’t many photos, but even Ning Qi had to admit—lying through her teeth—that Lu Mingze was… well, he wasn’t ugly!
He was the male lead, after all, a favorite of the heavens. Ning Qi grudgingly admitted his appearance was passable, even if his character was rotten to the core! But this was an era where “beauty is justice,” and Lu Mingze was rich to boot. If the public knew he was married…
Ning Qi shook her head. She decided to go back and do a thorough search to see what the online comments about “her” were like.
However, regardless of what people thought of her, Qin Shi was definitely showered with praise. Ning Qi smiled and said, “Miss Qin is surely popular both online and in real life!”
Qin Shi didn’t want to engage in small talk. she asked again, “So, does Miss Ning have some business with me?”
Even though Lu Mingze had been present both times they crossed paths, Qin Shi had accurately concluded that Ning Qi was looking for her. After all, just now when Lu Mingze got up to leave, Ning Qi hadn’t followed him.
“Miss Qin is so clever!” Ning Qi’s mind raced. She was wondering how best to phrase her intent.
What would Qin Shi think of her? If she spoke the truth, would she be viewed as a fool or a lunatic? More importantly, even if Qin Shi were open-minded enough not to think she was crazy, if she told her she would eventually fall for Lu Mingze, would that actually make her start noticing him?
After all, some things are better left unsaid; the more you talk about them, the more they stay in someone’s mind. But then again, the ending was so tragic. Would Qin Shi be so furious she’d want to settle scores with Lu Mingze immediately?
“Miss Qin, if I said I just want to be friends with you, would you believe me?”
The person across from her had eyes that were darting around and fingers tapping her cup. It was obvious to anyone that she was lying, yet she wore a smile that made it almost impossible to say you didn’t believe her.
“Even if I believe you,” Qin Shi said slowly, “what does Miss Ning intend to do after making friends?”
Ning Qi hadn’t thought that far ahead. Currently, she just wanted to make sure Qin Shi didn’t fall for Lu Mingze. On that point, her desire to be friends was genuine. But in Qin Shi’s tone, there was an air of expecting something much bigger.
“Since Miss Qin knows my identity, do you have nothing you want to say to me?”
Actually, there was. Since Ning Qi had asked, Qin Shi didn’t want to beat around the bush. “I have no relationship with Lu Mingze.”
“That’s great!” Ning Qi said jubilantly.
Initially, Qin Shi thought Ning Qi had misunderstood her relationship with Lu Mingze and had come to confront her “love rival.”
Growing up, Qin Shi had encountered many men and women. The moment she spoke a single word to a man who was married or had a girlfriend—even if her response was purely out of politeness—their wives or girlfriends would inevitably try to prove something in front of her, to make her realize they were the “official” woman in that man’s life.
In the past, Qin Shi would just laugh it off. The husbands and boyfriends those women treated like treasures weren’t even worth mentioning in her eyes.
But now, Qin Shi couldn’t help but observe the woman before her again. Ning Qi had no intention of showing off, nor did she have any intention of warning her.
Regardless of the reason, Qin Shi emphasized again, “So, can you stop following me now?”
“I wasn’t following you,” Ning Qi said with a smile. “Even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t know where you are!” How could she possibly know someone’s private itinerary?
“Rest assured, Miss Qin,” Ning Qi took a sip of her drink—it was pleasantly sour—and took another long sip. “The people around you are very, very reliable! I was just wandering around here and happened to bump into you! If you don’t believe me, you can ask the waitress at the coffee shop across the street. I’ve been drinking coffee there for days—my tongue is practically numb from the bitterness!”
“You can check if you want!” Ning Qi said, sticking her tongue out slightly. She wasn’t lying about this; she really had drank way too much coffee these past few days. When she saw the dessert just now, her gratitude to Qin Shi was genuinely from the heart, because the desserts here were so expensive! She was currently living off her savings, so she needed to save wherever she could!
“And, although I am Lu Mingze’s wife, I really didn’t come looking for you because of that. I definitely haven’t misunderstood that you have any ‘illegal’ relationship with him.”
Since that wasn’t the reason, Qin Shi was even more unable to guess what Ning Qi wanted. Did she really just want to be friends?
“Miss Qin, did you notice that girl over there just now? The one your cousin helped?” Ning Qi suddenly changed the subject, describing her in as much detail as possible.
“I saw her.” Earlier, when Lu Mingze was sitting opposite her, Qin Shi had seen him glance that way. Although it was extremely fast, Qin Shi caught it.
Furthermore, with such a loud commotion, Qin Shi could hear the crying and the talking even without paying close attention.
“Her,” Ning Qi said with a smile. “Even if I were really looking for a love rival, I should be looking for her.”
Is that clear enough? Ning Qi thought. Have I hinted enough that the scumbag Lu Mingze already has someone he likes? To be precise, she wanted Qin Shi to realize that Lu Mingze was a total scoundrel.
He was married, yet he secretly loved his “White Moonlight” while simultaneously finding a “substitute.” He asked Qin Shi out for a meal the moment she returned, yet didn’t forget to comfort his little lover in the middle of it! Could there be anyone more scummy than him?
Ning Qi wasn’t wrong about this. Lu Mingze was indeed currently comforting his little “Junior,” Yun Shu.
“Miss Qin, I wonder if you’d be interested in coming downstairs with me to take a look?” Ning Qi issued a sincere invitation.
Just now, Ning Qi had thought of what she considered the best method to stop Qin Shi from falling for Lu Mingze: making sure she saw clearly that he was a total scumbag!
