- Chapter 5 - Cannon Fodder
He has a date!” As soon as Qin Shi finished her sentence, Ning Qi gave a sly smile and blurted out the answer.
“I saw them at the mall earlier,” Ning Qi added. This, of course, was a lie—she was relying on her knowledge of the plot to guess.
The scenes today were described in great detail in the book. The first meeting between the male lead and the White Moonlight after her return happened because he was busy accompanying the female lead while she was shopping!
Generally speaking, how could a “Dominant CEO” personally go shopping for things? It’s only ever for the female lead! The reason Lu Mingze slipped away so quickly and left in such a rush was that he was terrified the White Moonlight would discover the female lead’s identity.
If she remembered correctly, the book described it like this: “Lu Mingze was so nervous his hands were sweating; even he didn’t know exactly what he was trying to avoid…”
Lu Mingze didn’t want Qin Shi to know, but Ning Qi felt it was better if she knew right away. Qin Shi had helped her twice today; regardless of the circumstances, Ning Qi felt she should let her know the truth rather than letting her be kept in the dark for days.
However, Ning Qi noticed that Qin Shi had no reaction at all. Instead, she asked, “I still don’t know your name, Miss?”
“My last name is Ning. You can just call me Ning Qi, Miss Qin.”
“Miss Ning,” Qin Shi replied quickly, then asked, “You seem very concerned about Mr. Lu?”
“No,” Ning Qi laughed quickly. “How could that be? I really just happened to run into him.”
Qin Shi wouldn’t take me for one of Lu Mingze’s admirers who’s been stalking him, would she? Or maybe she thinks I view her as a love rival and I’m saying these things to her on purpose? As for that violent maniac, Ning Qi didn’t want anything to do with him!
“You said the same thing just now, Miss Ning,” Qin Shi pointed out flatly. “It seems you aren’t telling the whole truth.”
Alright, Ning Qi could only admit she was speechless. The car continued forward, the greenery on both sides receding as the atmosphere grew strangely heavy.
Qin Shi didn’t seem to want to ask why Ning Qi had appeared there or why she knew so much. She simply focused on driving, completely undistracted.
“Miss Qin,” Ning Qi was the one to break the silence again; she felt she should say something. “I mean no harm.”
Whether considering today’s events or future ones, Qin Shi and she had no reason to clash. Their only connections were Lu Mingze, the male lead, and the fact that they were both cannon fodder.
Ning Qi knew her own ending was grim—ending in suicide. Qin Shi’s family would go bankrupt, and though Ning Qi didn’t quite remember her specific ending, it certainly wasn’t good.
“I know,” Qin Shi said.
Qin Shi had known from the beginning that Ning Qi meant no harm; otherwise, she wouldn’t have offered to drive her home. However, this woman had hardly spoken a word of truth. This wasn’t the typical reservation one has with a stranger; Qin Shi’s intuition told her this reservation was different.
Hearing Qin Shi say this, Ning Qi breathed a small sigh of relief. Her knowledge was a mix of real-world observations and guesses based on the original book—there was no way to explain that to Qin Shi!
“Miss, please show your ID.”
Ning Qi looked up and saw they had reached the Nanyuan Residential Area. She quickly pulled out her ID to prove her identity.
“Miss Qin, I’ve truly troubled you today.” Once they reached her building, Ning Qi thought about offering some practical thanks, but the words died in her throat.
How could she thank her? Invite her to dinner? Setting aside whether Qin Shi would agree, she had just been asked out by Lu Mingze—would she even have the time?
“You’re being too polite, Miss Ning.” Qin Shi opened the trunk while Ning Qi stood there, unmoving. “It was just a small favor, don’t worry about it.”
“Consider it that I owe you a favor, Miss Qin,” Ning Qi said with a smile. If she had the chance next time, she would definitely repay it. Ning Qi didn’t like being indebted to others.
“You don’t need to take it to heart, Miss Ning.” Qin Shi turned and got back into the car.
After saying goodbye, Ning Qi gathered her things, preparing to carry them upstairs in one go. While packing, she thought about Qin Shi. “She’s so wonderful, why on earth does she have to fall for a scumbag like Lu Mingze?”
“She’s clearly such an outstanding person! Honestly—”
She didn’t finish her sentence because, as she stepped back, she realized someone was standing behind her.
And even more terrifyingly, that person was Qin Shi!
Why didn’t she leave? I clearly saw the car drive away!
The next moment, Ning Qi saw the object in Qin Shi’s hand. She hurriedly patted her pockets and searched her bag. Sure enough, it was her phone.
“Miss Qin, I—”
Qin Shi handed the phone to her, her expression calm. “Miss Ning, you left your phone in my car just now.”
“Thank you, thank you so much!” Ning Qi scratched her head awkwardly, feeling a bit dazed. She had no idea if Qin Shi had heard her or not.
Judging by her face, she probably hadn’t? Ning Qi took the phone, feeling very uncertain.
“You’re welcome!” Qin Shi turned and left. Her steps were fast, like a gust of wind; in no time, she reached her car parked by the flowerbed. She opened the door, got in, started the engine, and both woman and car vanished from Ning Qi’s sight.
Ning Qi let out a long sigh. She probably didn’t hear me, right? Otherwise, she would have asked a question or two.
There was a pile of bags on the ground, so Ning Qi stopped worrying about whether she’d been overheard. She picked them up and headed upstairs.
Today, Ning Qi wasn’t going back to the Lu family villa. She had decided on the way over that she was going to the Nanyuan apartment.
The Nanyuan property had been bought by Mother Lu and gifted to this body’s owner. Ning Qi didn’t feel bad about it; at that time, the original owner and Lu Mingze weren’t married yet, so the house could be considered a betrothal gift.
The original owner had never lived here; she had always felt it wasn’t right to accept such things. Ning Qi couldn’t yet judge what kind of person Mother Lu really was, but the marriage agreement the original owner signed with her son didn’t give her a single cent—could Mother Lu have really been unaware of that? At the very least, Mother Lu knew the two had no feelings for each other.
Speaking of which, the reason this cannon fodder ex-wife married the male lead was a classic novel trope. Lu Mingze’s parents were in a car accident where their car plunged into the water. It was the original owner’s father who sacrificed his life to save them, successfully rescuing Mother Lu at the cost of his own.
After her father died, the original owner became an orphan. Her mother wasn’t mentioned in the book, and Ning Qi hadn’t found anything in her letters or phone yesterday—perhaps there were other reasons.
Because of that life-saving debt, Mother Lu made Lu Mingze promise to marry her. Lu Mingze agreed simply because his White Moonlight, Qin Shi, had gone abroad; it didn’t matter who he married.
Ning Qi scoffed at this. If you don’t like her, don’t marry her. Once you’ve married her, even if you don’t love her immediately, you should at least treat her with basic decency.
But Lu Mingze not only failed to do that, he became increasingly worse. She didn’t know how the female lead could see the male lead as a “gentle senior.” Oh, she forgot—for the female lead, aside from a little bit of angst when she found out she was a “substitute,” the male lead was indeed very devoted.
After meeting Qin Shi today, Ning Qi didn’t dare slack off. It would be better to get this divorce over with quickly. She wasn’t worried about that for now; the book said that not long after the White Moonlight returned, the male lead brought up divorce to his cannon fodder ex-wife. The original owner had refused, but she was more than willing! Of course, Lu Mingze would have to pay up.
Ning Qi had already eaten at the mall, so she now had the leisure to examine the apartment. It had three bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom, and a kitchen. It wasn’t massive, but for Ning Qi alone, it felt quite spacious.
The home was fully equipped with appliances and furniture. Likely due to regular cleaning services, the place was neat and tidy.
Opening the closet, Ning Qi found quite a few clothes. She held them up—they were all made to her measurements. It seemed that while the original owner never lived here, she had definitely visited.
Ning Qi lay on the bed for a while before sitting down at the desk. Her thoughts drifted back to Qin Shi. She couldn’t understand why such an outstanding and kind woman would fall for a scumbag like Lu Mingze. Ning Qi had never been in love, but she had seen her older brother and Sister Mu.
Ning Qi’s brother and Sister Mu had known each other since childhood; they were childhood sweethearts who liked each other, and their elders had set their engagement as soon as they met. Ning Qi always felt that true love should be like her brother and Sister Mu.
The love between the male and female leads in the original book—a rich young master and a Cinderella—Ning Qi didn’t deny their feelings, but that love was sandwiched between an ex-wife, a White Moonlight, and a whole crowd of cannon fodder.
Specifically, she could not understand the male lead finding a “substitute” for his first love. And as for the original owner, the cannon fodder ex-wife—does your “love” not require any moral or ethical boundaries? They didn’t have a physical relationship, but it was clearly emotional infidelity!
The most frustrating part was that a “cannon fodder” character appeared almost every few chapters. Their purpose was basically to act as a catalyst for the leads’ romance. You’re falling in love, not grinding levels in a video game! Do you really need every supporting female character to live a miserable life just to highlight your own romance?
Speaking of cannon fodder, Ning Qi thought of something else. A great man once said that one should unite all forces that can be united. There was an A4-paper-sized list of cannon fodder in this CEO novel; weren’t they all forces she could unite?
Regardless, she and the male lead could never get along peacefully. Ning Qi was definitely not a pushover. Although she had transmigrated into a cannon fodder character, she knew she wouldn’t be one.
She wasn’t the original owner; she didn’t have a shred of admiration for the male lead. Ning Qi wouldn’t suck up to Lu Mingze just because he was the “Main Character.”
In her past life, although Ning Qi was always sick and couldn’t do much, her mind was sharp. This was why she could calm down so quickly despite such a world-flipping change.
Thinking about this, Ning Qi wanted to take action immediately, but as she stood up, she noticed a problem. The issue was that every single one of those women loved the male lead to death—how was she supposed to “unite” them?
If she told them directly, they’d think she was a lunatic. Moreover, she hadn’t even memorized most of the cannon fodder’s names; there were simply too many in the book!
However, it seemed not everyone loved the male lead to death. At the very least, Qin Shi didn’t—for now.
