The disciples of the Xuanmen school and the Ghost Cultivation lineage have always been at odds. Xuanmen disciples look down on Ghost Cultivators for raising little ghosts and refining souls, calling their methods crooked and heretical. In return, Ghost Cultivators despise Xuanmen disciples for their sanctimonious self-righteousness. Whenever disciples from the two schools meet, they are bound to fight to the death.

Because of her cowardice, she has lived a penniless and destitute life. Her luck was so bad that even when she lit incense for her ancestor to get a blessed offering fruit, it would end in disaster. One day, she woke up to discover she was on the verge of death. Even worse, her identity had changed to that of a Ghost Cultivator—the most despised kind of person in the eyes of Xuanmen disciples—and specifically, she had become her nemesis, Shen Wensi.
Her deceased master told her that if she could complete the tasks entrusted to her by their patron with Shen Wensi, she could extend her life and return to her old life. She recalled her senior sister’s scathing evaluation of Ghost Cultivators: they are “scheming! cunning! and ruthless!”

The two were then drawn into an endless series of life-or-death missions. To her surprise, her taciturn archenemy would always step in front of her whenever they encountered a ghost. Jiang Huaiyi began to feel that Shen Wensi was not at all like the Ghost Cultivators of legend. She gradually let go of the grudge between their two schools and began to regard her as a close friend. Until one day, she saw the people of the underworld trembling and bowing before her: “Greetings, Great Emperor.”
