Chapter 7: The Cold-Faced, Gray-Eyed Older Sister.
Zhu Yunqi followed Shi Li all the way to a lovers’ restaurant.
The restaurant was filled with couples, and Zhu Yunqi felt out of place going in alone, so she turned and went to a quiet bar across the street.
A window seat gave her a clear view of Shi Li and Wen Yue.
Zhu Yunqi ordered a Tequila Sunrise. The taste of alcohol was very faint; it wouldn’t make her drunk at all.
As the cold, sweet, orange-flavored liquid entered her mouth, ten meters away, Shi Li ate half of a strawberry that Wen Yue had fed her.
She gave Wen Yue a sweet smile, with the faint pink strawberry juice still on her lips. Her nimble tongue swirled over her lips, swallowing the juice. Her pearly teeth lingered on her lips, as if savoring the sweetness.
Shi Li had classic crescent-shaped eyes, which curved when she smiled. Her tear mole was like a gentle star hanging under the crescent moon.
…
So this is what she looks like when she genuinely smiles.
Zhu Yunqi recalled that when Shi Li had smiled at her yesterday, it was a standard professional, fake smile. Only the corners of her mouth turned up; her eyes were emotionless, a pure act of politeness.
Zhu Yunqi was a scout by training; by observing a person’s every move, she could roughly deduce their personality. Shi Li was not a person who easily showed her emotions, yet she could be so carefree and happy in front of Wen Yue. This indicated extreme trust. Also, the fact that she agreed to reconcile with Wen Yue so quickly and prevent their arranged marriage meant that Shi Li must still have feelings for Wen Yue. Even though she said they broke up, she was actually still madly in love, having spent seven long years together.
For the first time, Zhu Yunqi felt that having good eyesight wasn’t always a good thing.
No one wants to watch a public display of affection.
What a pity. I paid a high price for this affection to be displayed. I have to endure it.
A waiter from the bar approached Zhu Yunqi with a smile and a card.
“Ma’am, we have a singles’ party tonight. So many beautiful Omegas are coming. Would you like to join? Alphas like you are the most popular with Omegas.”
As the waiter spoke, she couldn’t help but sneak glances at Zhu Yunqi.
This customer had caught her attention the moment she walked in. Zhu Yunqi kept looking toward the lovers’ restaurant outside, her expression solemn, with a hint of unshakeable impatience in her eyes.
A classic case of a heartbroken Alpha who can’t let go of their ex and is trying to drown their sorrows in alcohol.
How could such a high-quality Alpha also experience the bitterness of a breakup?
Who wouldn’t love a wealthy and beautiful Alpha, especially one with gray eyes and a cold face?
The waiter’s gaze rested on Zhu Yunqi’s hand holding the glass. It was a slender, powerful hand with distinct joints, rounded fingertips, and neatly trimmed nails. The clearly visible, pale veins extended deep into her sleeves. The styloid process of the ulna at her wrist formed a rounded, hemispherical bump, with a small depression where it connected to the back of her hand, which was incredibly sexy.
If her hand weren’t holding a glass but…
The waiter’s imagination ran wild.
Zhu Yunqi’s eyes held a hint of coldness as she glanced at the waiter.
“Thank you. But I’m not interested. I would like to be alone, if that’s okay.”
…
At the window seat of the lovers’ restaurant across the street.
Wen Yue was wearing a formal navy blue pantsuit. Her hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail, and she wore a pair of rimless gold-wire glasses. The V-neck of her suit revealed a dazzling sapphire necklace between her collarbones.
That was the gift Shi Li had scrimped and saved to buy her for their one-year anniversary.
Looking at her partner eating silently across the table, Wen Yue still couldn’t believe Shi Li had forgiven her so easily.
Shi Li hadn’t spoken to her for a whole week. Wen Yue couldn’t imagine how she had gotten through that week, living in constant fear of losing Shi Li. In her dreams, Shi Li would coldly pull her hand away and curse her to have eight children with Zhu Yunqi.
Wen Yue had no appetite.
She confirmed with Shi Li one more time: “Baby, you’re really not mad at me anymore?”
Shi Li said gently, “A-Yue, I’m not not mad at you. I’m just not as mad as I was when I first found out.”
Whether she’s 100% mad or 40% mad, as long as Shi Li is willing to talk to her, it’s enough. Wen Yue thought mournfully.
Wen Yue had originally thought Shi Li wasn’t that important to her, especially after she met Zhu Yunqi.
Even though she hadn’t said much to Zhu Yunqi at the banquet that night, and even though Zhu Yunqi hadn’t made a serious effort to dress up, Wen Yue’s heart still skipped a beat the first time she saw her. People are drawn to power and strength. Zhu Yunqi’s appearance, temperament, and financial status all perfectly matched her every imagination of a powerful person.
After the banquet, her father, Wen Lirong, once again confirmed with her whether she had severed all “unclean” relationships.
Wen Yue knew her father was referring to some of the unsavory friends she had made in college, and any potential partners.
She had never told her family about Shi Li’s existence.
Feeling guilty toward Shi Li, Wen Yue confirmed that she had cut off all the relationships that Wen Lirong didn’t want.
She also didn’t hide it and confessed to Shi Li about the engagement set by her family.
But when Shi Li angrily said, “Let’s break up,” Wen Yue lost her composure.
Wen Yue realized she couldn’t live without Shi Li. During the days when Shi Li didn’t talk to her, she didn’t think about her future married life with Zhu Yunqi. Instead, she thought about every little moment she had shared with Shi Li: eating at the roadside food stalls by their school, watching the moon on a park bench at night, and writing their names on the inside of each other’s graduation caps…
Wen Yue had a naive and cruel fantasy: that Shi Li would be willing to stay with her without a formal title and continue to quietly accompany her after she married Zhu Yunqi. She would treat Shi Li better than before and compensate her as much as possible.
However, it was clear that Shi Li did not accept this proposal.
Wen Yue felt an immense sense of panic. She knew Shi Li’s temper. Most of the time, she was gentle and easy to talk to, but once her bottom line was crossed, she would become a stubborn person who would never look back.
Only by canceling her engagement with Zhu Yunqi might Shi Li forgive her and get back together with her.
But even if she herself gave up on the idea of being with Zhu Yunqi, her father, Wen Lirong, would not abandon the marriage alliance with Zhu Holdings.
Feeling overwhelmed, Shi Li unexpectedly contacted her, inviting her to eat at a restaurant they used to frequent.
…
Wen Yue said, “Baby, you know my father. Everyone has to listen to him. I have no right to say no. I apologize to you. There’s still some time before the engagement, and I will try my best to find a solution that works for both of us so that you don’t have to suffer.”
Shi Li caught the key point: “When are you and Ms. Zhu… getting engaged?”
Wen Yue lowered her head: “In about a month.”
“Do you like her? Does she like you?”
“I love you the most,” Wen Yue cleverly answered the first question.
As for the second, Zhu Yunqi hadn’t really shown much affection for her. But to show that she was being forced, Wen Yue told what she considered a “well-meaning” lie: “She likes me quite a bit. That’s why I really have no choice.”
Hearing this, Shi Li almost choked on her juice.
She likes me quite a bit.
How much? Enough to spend a billion star coins to hire her ex-girlfriend’s fiancée to ruin her own marriage?
Shi Li had always known that Wen Yue was a little fake, that she liked to put on an act in front of people.
But it was only a little, within her acceptable range, so she hadn’t cared before.
She never expected the deception to be this deep, with lies flowing so easily.
A deep sense of sadness welled up in her heart.
Shi Li knew she still loved Wen Yue. But it was precisely because she still loved her that it was most painful to see the person she couldn’t let go of become so ugly.
If she had completely fallen out of love with Wen Yue, she could have just watched this as a joke.
“Alright, let’s not talk about that anymore. How have you been recently?”
The Omega’s voice was soft and gentle, with a hint of a soft, cuddly tone. Wen Yue felt a feather-light tickle in her chest. Shi Li rarely acted so cute with her.
She must still love me.
