Chapter 17: Sharing a Bed
Bai Yinqing’s expression remained unreadable, as calm as ever, even cold to the extreme.
On-screen, he was the picture of a stoic gentleman, unmoved by temptation; off-screen, his large hand gripped a jacket tightly, blue veins bulging on the back of his hand from the sheer force, as if he wanted to use that strength to melt the owner’s scent entirely into his bone and blood.
Yu Weinian blinked at the screen again: “Bai Yinqing?”
Bai Yinqing looked over coldly.
“Your ears are so red,” Yu Weinian said with a soft chuckle.
The video call was disconnected instantly.
In truth, Yu Weinian hadn’t seen anything; the lighting on Bai Yinqing’s end was dim, and he couldn’t see the color of the other’s ears at all. It was just a casual tease, yet Bai Yinqing’s reaction was actually this big?
Yu Weinian’s shoulders shook. After a while, he couldn’t hold it back anymore and let out a low laugh. Bai Yinqing was even more interesting than he had imagined.
A bag sat on the bed containing the packed security blanket and a thermos. Yu Weinian grabbed them and headed straight out after his shower.
Back at the hospital, Bai Yinqing was lying on the bed, staring calmly at the distant window. Amidst his handsome indifference was a perfectly measured touch of melancholy.
Everyone has a type; this was the first time Yu Weinian had met someone like Bai Yinqing, who fit his ideal so perfectly.
“I stir-fried a few simple dishes.” As Yu Weinian took out the thermal containers, he “accidentally” revealed the “scalds” on the back of his hand and wrist. He set up the bedside table. “Eat up. I’ve already eaten.”
Bai Yinqing naturally noticed those red marks—new injuries added to old ones. The current scald looked even worse than before.
After a moment of silence, he spoke: “You didn’t need to do this.”
“But I wanted to,” Yu Weinian said earnestly. “I like you, I’m pursuing you, and I want to be good to you.”
Bai Yinqing: “I don’t like you.”
Yu Weinian was already tired of hearing this: “It doesn’t matter. It’s enough that I like you.”
Bai Yinqing was young after all; facing Yu Weinian’s relentless pestering, he felt a sense of helplessness for the first time. But he didn’t believe anyone would like another person 100% unconditionally.
The dishes, full of color and aroma, were displayed before him. Bai Yinqing hadn’t eaten for a long time, having only had some soup earlier. Once his tense emotions stabilized, hunger surged. His gaze lingered on Yu Weinian’s hand for a moment before he finally withdrew it.
He did not refuse Yu Weinian’s kindness.
“There’s a simple folding bed in the cabinet. Can I stay and keep you company tonight?” Yu Weinian pushed his luck. “I’ve already washed up and showered, as you know.”
Bai Yinqing: “I don’t need company.”
“But I’m worried about you,” Yu Weinian said. “When I first saw you today, your face looked terrible. I was afraid you’d faint the next second. I can’t stop worrying, and I really want to be closer to you. Just like when I see you at school, you’re always so alone…”
Bai Yinqing looked up: “You think I’m pitiable?”
“No,” Yu Weinian said without hesitation. “I just feel bad for you.”
“…” Yu Weinian spoke so naturally, as if it were the most logical thing in the world.
Bai Yinqing was speechless again. He lowered his eyes and finished every bit of food in the container.
Yu Weinian: “Is it good? It’s my first time cooking for someone.”
Bai Yinqing: “It’s okay.”
Yu Weinian: “That means it’s delicious.”
Now that Yu Weinian could roughly grasp the hidden meanings behind Bai Yinqing’s words and actions, he also noticed that Bai Yinqing looked at his hand more than once. He was certain: Bai Yinqing was susceptible to displays of weakness and playing the victim.
The janitor entered to take away the trash, leaving the two of them alone again.
Yu Weinian feigned opening the cabinet and glanced at the folding bed with a look of disgust: “Yinqing, the folding bed looks covered in dust, so dirty. Why don’t we just squeeze together tonight?”
Bai Yinqing: “Don’t call me that.”
“Is that a yes?”
Yu Weinian moved lightning-fast, rolling onto the bed. Meeting Bai Yinqing’s startled eyes, he blinked slowly. “Don’t worry, I’m a quiet sleeper and I don’t snore.”
Due to a momentary lapse in vigilance, Bai Yinqing lost half his bed space to Yu Weinian.
At such close proximity, the body heat and scent of another person became incredibly distinct. His hands resting by his side stiffened instinctively, and even his expression began to freeze. Bai Yinqing tried his best to ignore the warm presence beside him, struggling to keep his voice steady: “If you don’t want the folding bed, there are extra rooms.”
“No, I want to stay with you.”
Yu Weinian naturally pulled the quilt over a bit, burying half his face and leaving only a pair of affectionate, watery eyes visible. “What if you have another nightmare in the middle of the night? I’m worried about you, and I’m afraid you won’t be able to find me.”
“Let’s just make do for one night.”
“Even though I’m gay, I’m a gay with principles.” Yu Weinian gave a guarantee with his “playboy” face, which wasn’t very convincing. “Don’t worry, I won’t do anything to you.”
Even if Bai Yinqing had a nightmare, he wouldn’t look for Yu Weinian. Moreover, as an adult male, it was impossible for Yu Weinian to force him into anything.
Just as he was about to speak, he saw the cloth in Yu Weinian’s hand. It was a baby towel; despite being well-preserved, it showed signs of age.
Yu Weinian explained: “This is a face towel I used when I was a baby. I have many like it. I have to hold them to sleep at night, or I can’t fall asleep.”
The look in Bai Yinqing’s eyes became subtle. A fickle, frivolous playboy who treated life like a game actually had a habit like a small infant.
During Bai Yinqing’s silence, Yu Weinian seemed to have already entered sleep. He was exhausted; he adjusted his posture, and after finding a comfortable spot, rubbed his cheek against the soft pillow.
When Yu Weinian gripped the small cloth tightly with his “scalded” hand, his snowy profile looked obedient and beautiful. His long, thick lashes fluttered slowly with his breathing, casting soft shadows under his eyes. Like this, he truly did look like a fragile baby in need of protection.
But Bai Yinqing was more lucid than anyone; he knew this was all an illusion. He wouldn’t be fooled.
“Yu Weinian, get up,” Bai Yinqing said coldly.
Yu Weinian’s brow furrowed slightly. He reached out and grasped Bai Yinqing’s wrist, the “scalded” back of his hand exposed without reservation to Bai Yinqing’s view.
“Don’t be noisy, I’m so sleepy,” he murmured softly, his voice carrying a slight breathiness.
Yu Weinian appeared to be asleep, but his grip was not weak. Bai Yinqing tried to pull his hand away, but Yu Weinian held on tighter. If he pulled away forcefully, he might wake him. He fell into a dilemma.
He was particularly careful about the boundaries of social interaction, having built a sturdy and tight fortress. Yu Weinian was the only person who had repeatedly provoked those boundaries and intruded into his territory so brazenly. Consequently, Bai Yinqing lacked the experience to handle this; he could only lie there stiffly. The heat and scent of another person were less than an arm’s length away.
Boiling emotions surged within his body. He felt scorching hot all over—a heart-burning heat. Amidst his gradually heavy breathing, he lowered the AC temperature, but it had no cooling effect at all.
Left with no choice, Bai Yinqing tried to suppress the craving in his marrow with medication. Perhaps it was psychological, but after swallowing two pills, his emotions calmed slightly.
Yu Weinian, who had been sleeping properly in the corner, suddenly seemed to feel cold. He pressed closer, curling into Bai Yinqing’s embrace. He then clingily raised a leg, resting it over Bai Yinqing’s waist.
Time seemed to stand still. The slight friction between skin and fabric drowned out all other perceptions.
Bai Yinqing tensed instantly. The two pills he had just swallowed lost their effect. An untimely sexual urge swelled like baked bread, stretching every blood vessel. Because Yu Weinian had showered, what Bai Yinqing smelled was entirely the natural scent of his body mixed with a faint fragrance of body wash.
The presence and heat of another person occupied Bai Yinqing’s territory unignorably. The intimate contact brought an intense pleasure like an electric shock to his nerves, making him strangely crave more…
“So cold…”
Yu Weinian squeezed further into Bai Yinqing’s arms. He was almost hanging onto Bai Yinqing, his body hot and soft. His lips brushed against the base of Bai Yinqing’s ear as he murmured indistinctly, “Bai Yinqing, hold me…”
“…” The oncoming faint fragrance was like a cake in the oven—airy, full, and soft. Bai Yinqing closed his eyes. Although he couldn’t see anything, he could feel Yu Weinian’s body temperature and the tremors of his frame with every breath.
The AC was at its lowest, yet Bai Yinqing was covered in a hot sweat. This flare-up of his condition was more violent than any before. Reason told him he should push Yu Weinian away, otherwise he couldn’t guarantee what would happen next.
Bai Yinqing was wary of anything that might make him addicted and loathed the feeling of losing control. He kept his eyes shut tight, habitually holding his breath, but even without smelling Yu Weinian’s scent, his presence remained clear.
Yu Weinian was not only very fragrant but also very warm. When he pressed into his arms, those twisted, surging, restrained desires grew like wildfire, greedily demanding more.
“Let go of me,” Bai Yinqing panted, struggling to maintain his sanity.
The fast-asleep Yu Weinian couldn’t hear this warning. Instead, like a small animal unaware of danger, he kept pressing into the embrace.
When Bai Yinqing opened his eyes, he could see the long, snowy neck and the smooth lines of the collarbone. Yu Weinian’s skin was too white, as if it could easily be marked with traces belonging only to him. Yu Weinian curled his body slightly; the thin blanket couldn’t block the chill, so he could only hug Bai Yinqing tighter to obtain a source of heat.
Like prey walking right into a trap.
A drop of hot sweat flowed down Bai Yinqing’s jaw, pooling at his chin before finally trembling and dripping onto Yu Weinian’s neck. He still lay there motionless, obediently clutching his baby towel, but his neck and shoulder line formed a moist reflection.
That was a sticky trace left by Bai Yinqing.
This created a morbid, eerie sense of satisfaction in his heart. He felt as if he had become a male marking his mate with his scent, and another primal urge made him impatient to leave more marks, until the mate was filled with his aura inside and out.
Just imagining the possibility made his breathing uncontrollable. Bai Yinqing suddenly understood what the doctor meant—the consequence of drug abuse was inevitable backlash. Was this unsuppressable fire due to the medication’s backlash?
Because he was sleeping so soundly, Yu Weinian’s cheeks were flushed pink. His skin was delicate and elastic, looking extremely soft. Bai Yinqing stared for a moment, wanting to reach out and touch him, but he withdrew his hand.
His burning palm pressed onto a shoulder. Just as Bai Yinqing was about to push Yu Weinian away, Yu Weinian suddenly tilted his face up, his warm touch brushing against Bai Yinqing’s jaw.
It was Yu Weinian’s lips.
Bai Yinqing’s patience had reached its limit. He could no longer suppress the desire deep within his heart. His large hand pinned both of Yu Weinian’s wrists above his head in an irresistible posture.
A deep gaze loomed over like a shadow. Despite being treated this way, Yu Weinian actually didn’t wake up. His long, crow-feather lashes trembled, and his oversized pajamas rolled up, revealing a narrow waistline as white as a handful of snow.
The large hand shackling his wrists gradually tightened, bone and veins appearing. Bai Yinqing’s face was cold, but his eyes burned with intense desire.
