Chapter 14: Taking Advantage of a Weak Moment
Bai Yinqing did not reply to the message.
Yu Weinian didn’t receive a response, but he didn’t care. The joy of pursuing someone lies in the process; obtaining a definitive answer too quickly would actually be boring.
The next day, Yu Weinian habitually sent a few messages to Bai Yinqing, but Bai Yinqing didn’t reply to any of them. Currently, he had few classes, his mentor left him to his own devices, and there were no group meetings—he just had to submit a thesis at the end of the term. He was very idle every day.
During the lunch break, Yu Weinian went to Bai Yinqing’s dormitory.
Only Ke Ya was in the room: “Bai Yinqing took a temporary sick leave last night. I haven’t seen him today either; he should still be at the hospital.”
Hospital? Was Bai Yinqing sick?
This was a perfect opportunity to take advantage of a weak moment. Yu Weinian pressed: “Did he say which hospital?”
Ke Ya shook his head: “He didn’t say.”
Bai Yinqing was a loner with mediocre relationships with his roommates, so it was normal for him not to tell them.
“Alright, thank you.” Yu Weinian planned to think of another way.
Yu Weinian checked the time and was about to leave when Ke Ya suddenly called out to him, saying hesitantly: “But I accidentally saw a slip… I’m not sure if he went to this hospital.”
The hospital where Bai Yinqing was located was a high-end private hospital that operated on an appointment-only basis. Yu Weinian happened to have some connections; he had someone arrange an appointment slip for him. After arriving at the hospital, he symbolically had a doctor prescribe some medicine.
He immediately took the medicine in hand and searched floor by floor. Finally, he spotted Bai Yinqing on the fourth floor.
Yu Weinian straightened his attire and walked forward with composure. Then, he feigned surprise: “Bai Yinqing, why are you here?”
When Bai Yinqing heard someone calling him, he didn’t react immediately; he thought it was an hallucination. It took a few more seconds before he slowly turned his face. He was pale, his eyes were full of bloodshot veins, and under the cold white lights of the hospital, he looked like a gloomy, malevolent spirit.
Coincidentally, a nurse passed by: “Mr. Bai, have you still not gone to rest? We will keep an eye on the operating room for you. You can go to the nearby lounge to rest for a bit… You’ve been sitting for a whole night; your body won’t be able to hold up.”
It was only then that Yu Weinian realized that although Bai Yinqing looked calm and sat up straight, his clothes were covered in wrinkles and his appearance was haggard. It turned out he hadn’t slept all night.
Yu Weinian looked at the operating room ahead. Was it a family member of Bai Yinqing inside? Having a rough idea in his mind, he sat down beside Bai Yinqing.
“Your complexion is very bad. Go rest for a bit first?” he said softly. “I’ll help keep watch for you here, okay?”
Bai Yinqing stared at him: “No need.”
Yu Weinian had no intention of prying into Bai Yinqing’s privacy, and Bai Yinqing wouldn’t proactively tell him who was in the operating room.
The two of them sat at the entrance of the operating room. Having stayed awake all night, Bai Yinqing felt as if he were split into two halves: his body was exhausted, but his spirit was highly excited. He hadn’t thought about resting; instead, he sat there quietly. It was as if he were fighting a battle with himself, and also as if he were torturing himself.
Finally, the door to the operating room was pushed open. The doctor brought good news: “The surgery was very successful; we drained over 800 milliliters of fluid…”
Yu Weinian “happened” to step away to take a phone call, standing not far ahead. From this distance, he wouldn’t hear the conversation between Bai Yinqing and the doctor.
Bai Yinqing: “Okay, thank you.”
Yu Weinian, having finished his call, returned just in time. He had also gone to get a cup of water: “Drink some warm water.”
Bai Yinqing glanced at him but took the cup anyway.
Yu Weinian: “The surgery went smoothly, right? Aren’t you going in to see?”
Bai Yinqing: “I can’t go in yet.”
“Then why don’t you go rest for a while,” Yu Weinian said. “I’ll go with you. If something happens later, I’ll wake you up.”
“Although I don’t know who you are waiting for, I believe that person wouldn’t want to see you so haggard.”
Bai Yinqing wasn’t someone who felt he needed rest, but after gazing at Yu Weinian for a moment, he still said, “Okay.”
The hospital provided a specialized lounge for the families of patients. Bai Yinqing had only planned to take a short nap on the sofa, but he saw Yu Weinian making the bed for him.
“Why are you looking at me?” Yu Weinian turned around. “To be safe, I put on a disposable bed cover. Sleep in the bed; it’s more comfortable.”
“Yu Weinian,” Bai Yinqing’s voice was somewhat raspy. “Why are you here?”
“I came to the hospital to see a doctor, of course. What else did you think?” Yu Weinian waved the medicine in his hand and urged, “Alright, come over and sleep. Have a good sleep; everything will be better when you wake up.”
Yu Weinian forcefully pulled Bai Yinqing to the bed and forcefully tucked him in. Bai Yinqing tried to get up but was pushed back onto the bed by one of Yu Weinian’s hands.
“Wait until you wake up to talk about anything,” he said. “I asked the nurse; your grandfather will wake up in about an hour. I’ve set an alarm for an hour. Of course, I will stay right here by your side until you wake up.”
“…” Bai Yinqing: “You will stay with me the whole time?”
Yu Weinian: “Of course.”
Bai Yinqing didn’t speak, only quietly watching Yu Weinian. Beside him was the scent of another person; this time there were no messy perfumes, and it smelled very good.
His insomnia was severe, so he usually stayed awake for long periods, only falling asleep when his body was sufficiently exhausted. For instance, if he stayed up all night, he could fall asleep normally the second night. But even when it was intentional, he still found it hard to fall asleep.
This was the only time that, as soon as he closed his eyes, his consciousness became muddled and blurred.
In a half-dreaming, half-waking state, a familiar feeling struck. Bai Yinqing’s body seemed to lose control, like a lonely wandering soul floating in mid-air.
In the winter under a thick fog, a little boy stood in a garden, shivering from the cold with blue lips. His youthful face was full of pitiful pleading and expectation as he looked at the two tall, dark figures ahead.
Bai Yinqing couldn’t see the faces of those two black shadows clearly, but he could hear their voices distinctly.
“Why is it 99? You could get 100 last time.”
“The difficulty increased, and the highest score was 99? Then why couldn’t you work harder to get a perfect score?”
“Why do you insist on comparing yourself to those who are worse?”
“Stop crying!”
“You are my son; you cannot be worse than anyone else.”
“…” These words could not affect the adult Bai Yinqing. But for a child, they were sharper than a dagger. One by one, certificates and trophies filled the display cabinets, and then a new cabinet would appear. The number of honors was never enough, and they would never be satisfied.
Play was not permitted; relaxation was not permitted; mistakes were not permitted. A sapling under strict care was required to be lush and leafy, with every single branch growing perfectly.
Scene after scene played like a videotape, gradually blurring and fading. The perspective shifted abruptly; Bai Yinqing sat on a cold chair, the familiar setting letting fear creep in slowly. He looked up and saw two pairs of disappointed eyes.
“How can the spirits of kids nowadays be so fragile… How did you become like this?”
“I really regret giving birth to you.”
“Bai Yinqing!”
His head throbbed severely, like needles piercing his cranial nerves. Each questioning remark became blurred, but his heartbeat grew faster and faster. His vision became distorted and vague. Bai Yinqing suddenly jolted awake, his limbs already ice-cold.
However, his body felt warm.
The terror in Bai Yinqing’s eyes had not yet dissipated. After pausing for a moment, he sluggishly turned his gaze toward Yu Weinian, who was embracing him.
Yu Weinian could clearly feel Bai Yinqing’s trembling. He sat on the edge of the bed, his arms wrapped around Bai Yinqing’s waist, while his other hand gently patted Bai Yinqing’s back.
His tone was extremely gentle: “It’s okay, it’s okay. It’s just a nightmare; you’ll be fine now that you’re awake.”
Yu Weinian’s embrace was warm and carried his unique scent. When he held Bai Yinqing, Bai Yinqing knew clearly that he was in reality, not a void dreamworld.
Bai Yinqing didn’t speak, but his cold body temperature and slightly trembling frame exposed his current mood.
Yu Weinian had been playing games on the sofa when he suddenly saw Bai Yinqing on the bed turning deathly pale with his brow tightly furrowed. Realizing Bai Yinqing might be having a nightmare, he hurriedly put down his phone and sat on the edge of the bed.
He held Bai Yinqing, and sensing that Bai Yinqing didn’t resist, he reached out to touch Bai Yinqing’s forehead: “You seem to have a fever; your temperature is a bit high. I’ll call the doctor to help take your temperature, okay?”
Just as Yu Weinian was about to stand up, his wrist was grabbed.
He turned his body and met Bai Yinqing’s pitch-black eyes; the depths of that cold gaze were filled with a deep, murky darkness.
