- Chapter 4 - The Paranoid Villain (4) A Kiss on the Cheek
Yan Yi’s muscle definition was not just for show; it was practical. With his arm hooked around Lu Yinshen’s waist, he held him securely within his embrace.
The sofa was right in front of them. With his long legs, it would have taken only two steps to reach it, yet he deliberately moved at a snail’s pace. He was unwilling to let go of the person in his arms. Having stayed in that embrace for so long, the heat from Yan Yi’s chest caused the corners of Lu Yinshen’s eyes to burn with a flush of red.
This touch of bewitching crimson was decadent and seductive, like a legendary sprite using beauty to lure travelers into depravity. The myriad of colors outside the window could only serve as a backdrop. The patches of skin in contact were separated by fabric, yet even so, Yan Yi could sense the startlingly hot temperature of the man in his arms and his weight, which was as light as a feather.
It was a remnant of a body that seemed to have been stripped of its soul and flesh, leaving only bones. The sight made Yan Yi’s heart tighten as a dense, numbing ache coiled around his chest. Yan Yi did not allow a trace of this emotion to show on his face. Lu Yinshen had a powerful personality; to him, heartache and pity were the most useless of things. Regardless, as long as Yan Yi was there, he would eventually nourish this man back to health.
Even though Yan Yi intentionally slowed his pace, the short distance was covered before long, and they reached the sofa. He leaned over, gently placed Lu Yinshen down, and pulled over a small blanket to cover him. After carefully tucking in every fold, Yan Yi spoke.
“The roses have bloomed. You can have a good look at them from here.”
Seeing flowers he liked would surely improve his mood. However, Lu Yinshen was stingy with his gaze, refusing to grant even half a look to anything else. His pupils remained fixed on Yan Yi. There were more than just roses blooming in the garden, yet this man specifically mentioned his favorite red roses. He did not believe in coincidences.
Yet Yan Yi continued to speak with a curved smile. “So many rosebushes have bloomed in the garden. There are more of them than all the other flowers combined. You must especially like them to have planted so many, right, Uncle Lu?”
Lu Yinshen’s eyes shifted as he gave a faint “Mm.” He turned his head and stopped looking at him, gazing instead at the spring scenery filling the garden. Those illusory fragments in his mind grew a bit clearer.
“These flowers have thorns. If you truly like them, wait until I have removed all the thorns before you touch them, alright?”
“Some flowers have not grown yet. When the flowering season comes next year, they will all bloom.”
“Darling, you have asked this question many times. Of course, I will always stay by your side.”
“Yinshen, if you look at me like that, I will not be able to restrain myself.”
Memories, like bubbles, lingered on the slight warmth at the center of his brow. It felt real yet fleeting. However, countless people had told him that it was just a dream, a nightmare that had trapped him. He did not care what others said; he only wanted that person’s figure to become clearer, just a little bit clearer. Yet whenever he thought deeply, his brain throbbed with a piercing, bone-deep pain. Even if he kept thinking about it, he could not recover much of the memory.
The blooming red roses outside the window basked in the sunlight, reflecting in his eyes, yet they could not warm the deep, chilling gloom of his gaze. The voice at his ear wound around him like silk, drawing Lu Yinshen’s attention back.
“How is it? Are they beautiful?” Yan Yi asked, his tone rising with cheer.
Lu Yinshen still did not turn his head to look at him. His only answer was “Mm.” Seeing him so completely focused on the view outside, Yan Yi’s eyes darkened for an instant. How could his Little Uncle pay so much attention to something else? Why would he not look at him? Why could he not look only at him?
An uncontrollable surge of possessiveness ravaged his heart. Yan Yi’s expression remained unchanged, a warm arc rising at the corners of his lips as he softened his voice. “It is wonderful that you like them, Uncle. I will plant flowers for you in the future too, okay?”
Lu Yinshen’s gaze darkened for a few moments before he finally turned to look at him. His eyes stared straight into Yan Yi’s, appearing to look at him, but seeming more like he was looking through this skin to the soul within.
Yan Yi’s features were soft. He bent over to tidy the blanket that had slid down slightly on the man’s legs, meticulously smoothing out every edge. He leaned in, his lips pressing against Lu Yinshen’s earlobe. His warm breath twined around it, causing the sensitive tip of the ear to tremble slightly. “Since you are not speaking, I will take it as an agreement.”
Deep black eyes locked onto the slightly trembling earlobe as a smile brewed within them. His Little Uncle’s sensitive spot was truly too cute. As he stood up, his lips accidentally brushed against Lu Yinshen’s pale cheek, leaving a trace of warmth behind.
Yan Yi appeared flustered, his face turning red as he spoke incoherently. “Uncle, I am sorry. I did not mean to kiss you.” Not only his face, but even his ears were completely flushed. He looked like a shy youth who did not know what to do with himself.
Lu Yinshen locked onto the redness on the boy’s face. The moist, warm sensation on his cheek still held a lingering heat, overlapping with the warmth on his brow from his memories. He gestured for Yan Yi to come closer. Yan Yi obediently moved nearer until they were at eye level. At the moment their eyes met, Yan Yi’s face turned even redder. His handsome features were full of bashfulness as he blinked at him.
Even his tone was equally shy. “What is it, Uncle?”
His jaw was suddenly grabbed. Lu Yinshen pinched his chin, forcing him to keep looking him in the eye. Chilling black eyes, devoid of any light, stared at him without blinking. His sickly face was pale and exquisite, and there was not a trace of a smile or warmth on his lips.
The movements of his hand were not gentle. Yan Yi’s skin was very fair, and a red mark immediately appeared where his chin was being pinched, looking exceptionally eye-catching on his face. Yan Yi curved his innocent eyes, his tone softening. “What is wrong, Uncle?”
Lu Yinshen ground the boy’s name against the tip of his tongue, his voice hoarse and cold. “Yan Yi.”
Yan Yi did not try to break free from the grip on his jaw. Instead, his voice became even softer. “Uncle, it hurts.”
The patch of skin being held was indeed turning redder. As the pinching continued, the redness threatened to spread further. His handsome face, paired with this simple expression, naturally evoked a desire to protect him, making it hard to keep bullying him. Lu Yinshen, however, did not let go for a long time. He stared at him for a while, the strength in his hand becoming increasingly difficult to restrain.
“Uncle, it really hurts a lot.”
These words sounded extremely aggrieved. Yan Yi’s expression carried a hint of pitifulness, and his tone was soft. When he looked at him, it was as if he were acting spoiled. Finally, the hand let go, leaving behind patches of bruised red on Yan Yi’s face. Lu Yinshen closed his eyes, suppressing all emotions within his gaze and refusing to let anyone catch a glimpse.
The roses outside swayed, but these gorgeous flowers could not bring color to Lu Yinshen’s scarred heart. Yan Yi ignored the pain on his face and smiled. “I bought some of the dishes you like to eat. I will cook for you at noon today, okay?”
He had just purchased some groceries using his phone, and they would likely be delivered soon. Lu Yinshen finally opened his eyes to look at him. Yan Yi took this gaze as a silent agreement and added with a smile, “You will definitely like them, Uncle. I am very good at making these dishes.”
He was not lying; his cooking skills were indeed excellent. Not only could he cook the porridge Lu Yinshen liked, but he could also expertly prepare representative dishes from various major cuisines. Even if there were a few dishes he did not know, he could master them with a bit of study.
Lu Yinshen’s eyes did not move as he watched him for a long time. Eventually, he looked away. The various colored flowers outside swayed in the wind, while the accompanying green leaves were unwilling to fall. Seeing Lu Yinshen staring in another direction and not at him, the darkness in Yan Yi’s eyes surged. Possessiveness struck once again.
The doorbell rang. The surging darkness dissipated. Before one could blink, it had turned back into a soft, pure color. Yan Yi spoke softly, “I will go take a look and be back soon.”
After confirming that Lu Yinshen had heard and agreed, Yan Yi immediately turned and walked away quickly, using the smart system to open the villa gate. It was the staff member delivering the ingredients. These groceries were bought from an imported supermarket operating within the villa district. They were very fresh, which would make the cooked meal taste better.
After putting the food in the kitchen, Yan Yi stepped out into the living room and collided with Lu Yinshen’s gaze, which was filled with a deep, concentrated blackness. A smile blossomed on his lips at the right moment. Yan Yi walked toward him quickly and said, “Uncle, it is getting late. You stay here and look at the flowers while I go inside to cook, alright?”
Lu Yinshen was clearly not in agreement. His beautiful brows furrowed slightly, and a sense of resistance emanated from between them. Yan Yi explained, “There are knives in the kitchen. It is not safe.”
Furthermore, it was an open kitchen. Even if Lu Yinshen sat there, he could still see him, though the distance would be slightly further away. However, Lu Yinshen was unwilling. This posture of resistance was too obvious for Yan Yi to play dumb. Moreover, he had always been unwilling to let this man show an expression of disappointment.
It was just a trip to the kitchen. By staying far from the knives and with him watching from the side, Lu Yinshen would not get hurt. With this thought, Yan Yi felt more at ease. He reached out directly, sliding his hand along the curve of Lu Yinshen’s waist to wrap around his lower back. His other hand reached behind the knees. With a tightening of his arm muscles, he successfully gathered the man into his embrace.
This time, Lu Yinshen did not reach out to circle his neck. His hands rested loosely at his sides. Without having to look up, he could clearly see the man holding him. The sharp, clean jawline and the slightly protruding, sexy Adam’s apple belonged to a handsome boy of a fine age.
But all of this combined was not as striking as the red finger marks pinched into his chin. Yan Yi’s skin was too fair; even a little force would leave a mark. Furthermore, Lu Yinshen had not been polite at all when he gripped his jaw just now, squeezing tightly for a long time. The red mark had still not faded. Looking at it, one could not help but feel that it must have been hurting for quite a while to stay so red.
This time, Yan Yi still intentionally slowed his steps, yet he could not keep him in his arms for long before they were empty again. He pulled the blanket over the man’s legs to ensure they would not catch a cold. Yan Yi said, “Then let us go.”
He pushed Lu Yinshen into the kitchen, carefully choosing a corner furthest from the knives before he began preparing the ingredients for the meal. Washing, trimming, and chopping. During an interval in the food preparation, Yan Yi looked over at Lu Yinshen and saw him staring with a serious expression at the egg cooker in operation. He looked so intent that he was more focused on it than he had been on Yan Yi.
A sea of jealousy instantly roared and overturned within Yan Yi. It was not until Lu Yinshen sensed his gaze and looked back at him that the jealousy stopped fermenting and emitting a sour air. With his eyes crinkled, Yan Yi gave Lu Yinshen a standard smile.
Lu Yinshen stopped looking at him and continued to earnestly guard the eggs as they were gradually cooked in the appliance. Even though he felt very sour, Yan Yi did not make any other moves to fight for his uncle’s attention. It was rare for Lu Yinshen to have something he was so focused on. He withdrew his gaze and continued processing the ingredients. Before long, several dishes had taken shape.
A movement came from the side, causing Yan Yi, who had been constantly watching Lu Yinshen, to look over immediately. Lu Yinshen had controlled his wheelchair to move closer, and his fingertip lightly tapped the egg cooker, pushing it toward him. At first, Yan Yi did not quite understand, but when Lu Yinshen’s gaze swept over his chin, he immediately understood the man’s meaning. He wanted him to use the eggs to roll over the bruise.
He remembered that when they first met, Lu Yinshen had pinched his face in the same way, leaving an identical red mark. Back then, he had told Lu Yinshen that rolling a boiled egg over it would make it stop hurting. Lu Yinshen’s memories had been erased, so he did not know where he had seen this method. Was he boiling the eggs so seriously just because he wanted him not to be in pain?
Looking at the eggs Lu Yinshen had boiled specifically for him, Yan Yi’s expression softened, and so did his heart. He naturally could not refuse the man’s kindness. Just as he was about to take a hot egg from the appliance to touch his face, Lu Yinshen stopped him in time. He took a neatly folded handkerchief from his pocket and gave it to him. “Wrap it. It is hot.”
Yan Yi took it obediently. The scalding egg was wrapped inside the handkerchief; the heat remained, but not to the point of causing injury. He picked up an egg and rolled it, but after a short while, he raised his hand and blinked, showing weakness to Lu Yinshen. “I was holding the spatula for a long time just now, and my hand hurts. Can you help me, Uncle?”
As he spoke, he brought the round egg toward Lu Yinshen’s hand. Soon, it found its way into his uncle’s palm. Yan Yi bent down halfway, his chin tilted up slightly, exposing all the marks from the pinching to Lu Yinshen’s sight. The red imprint was particularly eyesore on that face. Yan Yi looked at Lu Yinshen expectantly. “Uncle, please.”
Lu Yinshen raised his hand and touched his chin with very light pressure. His technique was raw and clumsy, lacking any seasoned skill. However, when his fingertip accidentally brushed against the corner of Yan Yi’s mouth, it made Yan Yi want to open his lips and bite that offending finger, licking and toying with it. Yet Lu Yinshen’s finger only stayed at the corner of his lips for a fleeting few moments. Considering the persona he had to play, that thought had to be regrettably set aside.
Whether the method was truly effective or not, the red mark faded significantly, returning to the color of Yan Yi’s natural skin. Lu Yinshen’s voice was hoarse. “It is done.”
Internally, he wanted Lu Yinshen to touch him more, but thinking that his uncle might get a sore hand from holding it up for so long, Yan Yi did not say more. He only said, “Thank you, Uncle. Let us eat then.”
The food was still warm, with wisps of steam rising. The meal was finished quickly. Before Yan Yi could start cleaning up, a message popped up on his phone.
“Dear Freshman Yan Yi of University A, today is your first day to report to school. We wish you a pleasant and fulfilling academic life on campus.”
Looking at this text, Yan Yi nearly failed to react at first. Then he remembered that his current identity was a first year student kindly adopted by Auntie Lin. It was normal to have to report to school at this time. And at University A, the protagonist of the novel was also a student. Calculating the time, it seemed the plot was about to officially begin.
However, the fish raised by the protagonist had mostly had their scales plucked clean by him; they would not be able to cause much of a splash. After a quick scan of the message, Yan Yi looked at Lu Yinshen and said, “Uncle, I may have to leave here for a period of time.”
As soon as these words were spoken, Lu Yinshen’s gaze pierced straight toward him.
