- Chapter 10 - The Paranoid Villain (10) The Paper Rose
Silence reigned.
There was no other movement in either bedroom. Even the sound of breathing had reduced to an instinctive, airy whisper. On the other end of the earphones, after a long period of quiet, a thumping sound suddenly exploded against the eardrums.
Thump-thump, thump-thump.
It was a clear and violent heartbeat, its frequency unnaturally fast. If human organs could run, Yan Yi would surely chase down and kiss this feverish, throbbing heart. The smart assistant’s answer echoed clearly in the room.
“Master, it is not acceptable to fall in love with your own uncle. In human society, blood relations and ethics are the foundation of social stability.”
It began listing reasons, all revolving around how such feelings violated moral codes and that uncles and nephews should not develop relationships beyond family affection. Yan Yi’s eyelashes trembled slightly, and his expression appeared somewhat sad. “So, I am not allowed to like him?”
“Yes, Master.”
Yan Yi looked unhappy, holding his phone with a face full of dazed helplessness. His self-muttering revealed the confused heart of a youth. “But I really like him.”
He opened the chat interface with Lu Yinshen. After hesitating for a long time, he finally sent a message.
y: Uncle, are you there? y: [Kitten waiting expectantly image]
A special ringtone immediately sounded from the phone. Yan Yi quickly received a reply from Lu Yinshen.
lys: What is it?
Yan Yi bit his lip.
y: It is nothing. I just wanted to talk to you. lys: Speak then. I am here.
Truth be told, it was surprisingly flirtatious. A smile reached Yan Yi’s brow. His expression of panicked youthful longing almost crumbled; he could barely keep up the act. He brushed a finger over his ear, lightly pressing the functioning earphone. Breath and heartbeat intertwined, accompanied by a faint and ambiguous low panting. It was so sexy that he wanted to pin the man to the bed and move against him fiercely.
y: Uncle, do you have someone you like?
He expected the answer to be no. He was certain that the Lu Yinshen of a year ago would have liked Yan Yi, but would the current Lu Yinshen, whose memories had been forcibly erased, still like him? However, the answer from the other side was an unhesitating affirmation.
lys: Yes.
Yan Yi lowered his dark lashes in disappointment, whispering sadly, “It definitely is not me, even though I like Uncle so, so much.”
The sound of breathing in his ear paused for a few moments as long, bony fingers continued to touch the screen.
y: I see. What kind of person is the one Uncle likes? Is that person better than me? lys: Very cute, very simple, and very kind.
The message came back extremely fast, but it did not answer his second question. Yan Yi lowered his head to hide the slight upward curve of his lips. Was that description not exactly the persona he was faking?
y: How much does Uncle like her? The person Uncle likes must be a beautiful and excellent girl, right? lys: No, he is a boy.
Darkness and a smile outlined Yan Yi’s features. His handsome face was filled with sated pleasure.
y: Then how much does Uncle like him?
Yan Yi admitted that he simply wanted to hear Lu Yinshen say it himself. He wanted to know exactly how deep that affection went. The other side did not send a message immediately. After a moment of waiting, the answer finally arrived.
lys: I want to kill him with my own hands.
The answer held no trace of lingering sweetness, only a bone-chilling terror and ruthlessness. Yan Yi, however, did not think so. He crinkled his eyes.
y: Why? y: If I had someone I liked, I would be very good to him. I would want to marry him and live with him. We would go for walks, travel, and have a world of our own.
For some reason, this touched a nerve in Lu Yinshen. No new messages came from the other side. Yan Yi did not even blink, focusing intently on the phone screen, yet after a long wait, nothing appeared. Yan Yi checked the time. It was almost early morning. If he stayed up any longer, it would damage his health. His fingers typed out a sentence to put a “to be continued” ellipsis on the conversation.
y: Then goodnight, Uncle. Rest early. See you tomorrow. y: [Kitten nuzzles you image]
In the pitch-black and thick darkness of the room, Lu Yinshen gripped his phone. He buried his face in a pile of clothes, his nose greedily inhaling a scent that did not belong to him. It was full of youthful vitality and the heat of the sun, a personality diametrically opposed to his own.
His overly thin hands gripped the bedsheets tightly. The coat draped over him enveloped him, bringing a rare and long-awaited sense of security. There were many clothes in this pile. Some were new, while others were old styles from a long time ago, yet someone had hidden them away like precious treasures. Two ruined legs lay uselessly on the bed. His eyes pulled away from the pile of clothes and turned toward the monitor on the wall.
The boy was currently closing his eyes, his eyelashes trembling rhythmically, and his lips were slightly pouted. He looked like he was sleeping peacefully. He was simple, soft, kind, and cute. Yet such a boy had personally said he liked him. These eyes remained glued to the wall for a long time. The red light spying from the darkness remained hidden all night long, its rhythmic flickering resembling a blinking scarlet eye.
Before the sunlight could filter in, Yan Yi woke up. He threw off the quilt, took his phone from the side, and opened the screen. He skillfully found the chat box with Lu Yinshen and sent a message.
y: Good morning, Uncle! [Kitten nuzzles you image]
His fingertip touched the Bluetooth device. The shallow breathing was obvious; Lu Yinshen was likely still resting. Yan Yi bought some ingredients for breakfast. While waiting for the delivery, he went to the door to bring in the items he had purchased yesterday. There were medicinal herbs for foot soaks, ingredients for medicinal meals, and materials for folding paper flowers.
Yan Yi set these things aside and took out a piece of paper. A beautiful and exquisite red rose immediately appeared. He pinned this flower to Lu Yinshen’s door so that Lu Yinshen would see it as soon as he stepped out of the bedroom. After washing up, he began preparing the medicinal meal and breakfast. He cleaned and steamed the food with practiced ease, and it was ready before long.
The breathing in his earphone still showed little change. Lu Yinshen had likely not woken up yet, and Yan Yi did not intend to rush him. Sufficient rest was beneficial for health.
Clatter. It sounded like an object had fallen.
Yan Yi’s expression changed instantly. He became tense and strode to Lu Yinshen’s door, raising his hand to knock. “Uncle, I just heard a sound from inside. Are you alright?”
“Do not come in. I am fine.”
Indeed, no groans of pain came through the Bluetooth, only the rustling sound of clothes being put on. Lu Yinshen was likely fine. Yan Yi felt relieved. While waiting for Lu Yinshen to come out, he folded another rose. Since moving here, the real flowers would have to be cultivated for a long time before Lu Yinshen could see them. These paper flowers were identical in shape and style to the roses he liked and could serve as a temporary substitute. Even if he could not see real flowers, seeing the fake flowers he liked was still good.
Yan Yi stood outside the room, waiting for Lu Yinshen to emerge. Even if there were no strange noises in the earphones, he needed to confirm it personally to truly be at ease.
The door opened slowly. The paper rose pinned to the handle caught Lu Yinshen’s eye, making his expression freeze for an instant. A moment later, it returned to its usual cold and aloof state. Yan Yi watched him carefully. After looking him over several times, he finally breathed a sigh of relief. Lu Yinshen looked truly fine; it seemed that what had fallen earlier was only an object and not him.
Yan Yi crouched down and said with a smile, “Does Uncle want to see a magic trick?”
Lu Yinshen watched him intently. Yan Yi curled his lips and snapped his fingers. A rose immediately appeared between his two fingers. “A rose for the beauty.”
The corners of Lu Yinshen’s eyes turned deep red as he gave a low laugh. “You are giving me this?”
“If this is not enough,” Yan Yi made an expression of deep and troubled thought, “I can also be added as a bonus.”
His lips parted slightly, a dark red tongue hiding an enticing ambiguity. “No, you are the main course.”
Yan Yi looked up to meet Lu Yinshen’s gaze. He tilted his head and asked, “So, does Uncle want to eat me?”
“However, compared to being an ingredient at someone’s mercy, I prefer being the diner.”
The desire hidden within his pitch-black pupils overflowed. Lu Yinshen’s sickly white hand was suddenly pulled into a palm. Yan Yi pressed his warm cheek against the hand, his eyes appearing innocent.
“What are you going to do, Uncle?”
