- Chapter 1 - The Paranoid Villain (1) Lu Yinshen
A fine, silk-like drizzle fell steadily, sending ripples across the artificial lake. Several precious koi fish darted away in a sudden fright. The bluestone paths interlaced with the neatly manicured lawn.
Lights were on in several villas nearby, exuding a bright and lived-in atmosphere. Only the building in the center remained pitch black on this rainy night, looking like a forgotten forbidden zone.
The heel of a shoe stepped onto the stone slab, creating a rare stir in the deep night. Slender fingers held the ribs of an umbrella. The black canopy obscured half of a face, revealing only a sharp and handsome jawline.
The man holding the umbrella suddenly paused. His fingers tightened involuntarily around the handle. Yan Yi’s pure, pitch-black eyes locked onto the villa that did not emit a single spark of light.
In the memories that had recently returned to him, he had been to this world before. Back then, he had successfully saved the world’s villain, Lu Yinshen. Unfortunately, an accident occurred midway, forcing him to start over. The last time he left this world, the System had not only sealed his memories but also erased every trace of his existence from the memories of everyone in this world. The current timeline of this world was one year after his departure.
Now, stepping back into this place, Yan Yi’s expression remained unchanged despite his newly unsealed memories. His eyes were like deep, dark pools, swallowing every outward emotion. Thinking of Lu Yinshen’s tragic end as a villain in his memories, Yan Yi’s gaze darkened. His wrist tensed instinctively, causing the umbrella to tilt. A cold wind carried raindrops onto the back of his hand, wetting his cuffs along the lines of his wrist and soaking both of his shoulders.
He raised his foot, stepped forward, and pressed the doorbell. His voice filtered through the intercom into the house.
“Uncle Lu, it is Xiao Yi. Auntie Lin asked me to come visit you.”
The voice, intentionally softened, sounded quite harmless. The Auntie Lin Yan Yi mentioned was the wife of Lu Yinshen’s second elder brother, and his identity this time was an orphan kindly adopted by her. In reality, Auntie Lin had neither asked him to come nor adopted him, but those events existed in her memory. All of this was merely the work of the System’s power. When Yan Yi performed tasks, he did not occupy someone else’s body. Instead, under the System’s influence, his own body would transform into an appearance and age that better suited his identity in that world.
Visiting someone this late felt less like a social call and more like an intrusion, but having just regained his memories, Yan Yi truly could not wait. He wanted to see his Little Uncle at this very moment. He wanted to see him very much.
The rain grew heavier. The dark night brewed a storm. After a long silence, an extremely hoarse response finally came through the intercom.
“Yan Yi?”
Yan Yi moved his lips closer to the intercom and softened his voice further, playing the role of a pure-hearted male college student to perfection.
“Yes, Uncle Lu. My surname is Yan.”
No further voice came from inside, but the front door opened automatically. Yan Yi left his umbrella outside and stepped in. Perhaps due to his arrival, the lights in the originally dark room flickered on. The dim, warm glow shone down oppressively, circling the only two people in the house into its territory.
A mechanical voice rang in his head:
[Detection of task target confirmed] [Scanning for feelings of despair] [Scan failed] [Reconfirming the best persona for the rescue target] [Confirmation successful: A simple, kind, and cute pure-hearted male college student.]
Yan Yi narrowed his eyes at the System’s ill-timed intrusion. His gaze landed on the person sitting in a wheelchair not far away. His black pupils took him in, tracing his features.
The man’s skin was a sickly, near-transparent white, and his lips lacked any trace of color. His features remained beautiful and exquisite, like a stunning rose covered in thorns, yet he was far less vibrant than in Yan Yi’s memories. His body was frail. His hands, clad in white gloves, rested weakly on the wheelchair armrests. His trouser legs were wide and swayed even without a breeze.
This was not the first time he had seen Lu Yinshen, but it was the first time he had seen him so gaunt, so thin that his bones were prominent. Yet, even though his body was weak and he relied on a wheelchair to move, he did not appear the least bit feeble. Instead, his aura was cold and sharp, carrying the natural stance of a superior in control of everything.
The man was clearly watching him as well. His unusual double-pupiled eyes locked onto him firmly. Deep emotions churned within them, as if he wanted to pierce through Yan Yi’s hypocritical skin, tear the soul hidden inside to shreds, and savor every bit of it.
Yan Yi walked slowly toward him and crouched down. His eyes lowered to the man’s somewhat atrophied legs, and he took off his coat to cover them. He held his slightly damp cuffs and looked up at Lu Yinshen before quickly lowering his head again, saying awkwardly and shyly, “It is raining hard outside, and I was in such a hurry to see you sooner, Uncle, that my clothes got a bit wet by accident.”
Yan Yi folded the wet cuffs back into his sleeves so that Lu Yinshen’s legs would only touch the dry fabric. The soft crown of his head swayed before Lu Yinshen’s eyes, yet the man’s gaze did not soften in the slightest.
Yan Yi played his role with total devotion, a soft and warm smile on his face. “Uncle, if you need anything, I can help you.”
The man did not speak. He only locked onto him with those double-pupiled eyes. Emotions surged within them, as if a wild beast were trapped inside. If he made any strange move, the beast would break its bonds, tear him apart, and swallow him whole.
Yan Yi stood up and poured a glass of warm water for Lu Yinshen. “It is raining and the temperature is low. You should drink more water, Uncle.”
Lu Yinshen looked down at the ripples in the glass. Yan Yi proactively pressed the cup into his palm. His fingertips accidentally brushed against the skin exposed outside the gloves. It felt like a piece of cold jade without any warmth. Yan Yi instinctively wanted to hold the man’s icy hand.
Yan Yi’s eyes crinkled into crescents, radiating innocence and softness. He looked every bit the natural, simple youth. He lowered his voice. “Uncle, you must be tired. Your bedroom is on the second floor, right? Let me take you back to your room to rest.”
Lu Yinshen remained silent, which seemed like a tacit agreement.
“The rain is so heavy outside. Can I stay here tonight?” Yan Yi pushed his luck to the limit.
Lu Yinshen stared at him deeply. After a long while, he gave a faint, “Mm.”
Seeing him agree, Yan Yi stood up, went behind Lu Yinshen, and pushed the wheelchair into the home elevator. With a ding, the elevator doors opened. Yan Yi pushed the wheelchair out but paused, asking something he already knew. “Uncle, where is your room?”
He had been here before, so of course he knew where Lu Yinshen’s bedroom was, but the pure male college student he was portraying should not know. Lu Yinshen’s knuckles pressed against the armrest. His fingers trembled from neuropathic pain. He said hoarsely, “I will go by myself.”
Even though Lu Yinshen could not see it, Yan Yi’s gaze was tender and lingering. He leaned down and took the hand that was pressing against the armrest, carefully kneading and rubbing it.
He said, “Uncle, I will just see you back to your room.”
Lu Yinshen stared intently at his fingers being toyed with in Yan Yi’s palm. His legs were useless, but his hands were not. He clearly had the strength to pull away, yet he instinctively let his strength fade against Yan Yi. His gaze darkened as a flash of ruthlessness passed through it.
Lu Yinshen closed his eyes and told Yan Yi the location of his bedroom. The steps Yan Yi was about to take faltered. He lowered his head slightly. The bedroom Lu Yinshen just mentioned was the room Yan Yi had stayed in during his last visit. But why was he not staying in his own master bedroom? Why was he sleeping in the room Yan Yi had used?
A sense of curiosity rose. Yan Yi’s smile did not fade, but he brought up an unrelated topic, saying, “Uncle, I have studied massage. Do you need me to help you?”
This was not a lie. Yan Yi had indeed studied massage, specifically for Lu Yinshen. Lu Yinshen’s legs had been immobile for a long time. Although he had lost sensation, he still suffered from neuropathic spasms. To alleviate this and prevent muscle atrophy, Yan Yi had specially learned massage. His skills had not regressed, and he thought it would make Lu Yinshen feel better.
The wheelchair rolled forward into the bedroom. The door opened automatically and then shut tight. Yan Yi remained standing in place. Previously, Lu Yinshen had controlled the wheelchair himself to enter. He knocked on the door and said, “Uncle, I am in the room right across from you. If you need anything, you must come find me.”
He walked into the opposite room. This was a guest bedroom, simply furnished yet luxurious and exquisite. Yan Yi took out his phone, opened WeChat, and sent Lu Yinshen a friend request.
y: Uncle, it is Xiao Yi.
He did not have to wait long before the phone vibrated.
[lys has accepted your friend request. You are now friends. Start chatting!]
Seeing him accept so quickly, Yan Yi raised an eyebrow. He bit the filter of a slim cigarette and let out a low chuckle.
y: Uncle, I am right across from you. If anything happens, you must contact me.
The other side did not reply for a long time. Yan Yi was not in a hurry. Checking the time, he continued typing.
y: It is getting late now. Sleep early, Uncle. Goodnight. y: [Kitten kisses you and says goodnight image]
The chat box stopped at that emoji; no new messages followed. Yan Yi held the cigarette between two fingers, lit it, and took a drag. As he exhaled a cloud of smoke, his eyes flicked to the screen. Seeing no reply, he leaned against the corner of the wall and looked out the window.
The rain had gotten heavier. Weather like this was extremely difficult for Lu Yinshen’s atrophied legs. Fortunately, the villa had a sufficient heating system, so Lu Yinshen should hopefully feel a bit better. Once the cigarette burned out, Yan Yi flicked away the ash, turned off his phone, lay on the bed, covered himself with the quilt, and began to sleep.
Though his eyes were closed, his brain was working at high speed. He began analyzing how to save Lu Yinshen. Since he failed last time, it proved that the previous method was not very effective and only held some reference value. Yan Yi calmed his mind and recalled the background information on Lu Yinshen.
Lu Yinshen was the villain of the Mary Sue novel He is Both Beautiful and Charming. The protagonist, Yao Si, drifted among several high-quality men, attracting countless eyes, but of course, this did not include the villain, Lu Yinshen. In this novel, the villain Lu Yinshen was described as a gloomy, disabled, beautiful, strong, and miserable man who did not understand love. He was defined as the villain because he was the uncle of the first male lead. When the first male lead needed Lu Yinshen’s power to back him up, Lu Yinshen simply ignored him. Resented by the first lead, he was naturally categorized as the villain.
His ending was not good. His enterprise was attacked by a coalition of the protagonist’s pursuers. Even though he held onto most of it through his powerful counterattacks, his self-made Yuli Group still lost significant market share. He remained disabled for life, confined to a wheelchair, and eventually died lonely in his massive villa.
When Yan Yi came last time, the plot had not started yet. His method for changing Lu Yinshen’s fate was simple and crude. First, he liquidated and bankrupted the companies that were supposed to team up against the Yuli Group, carving up their assets. Presumably, those male leads were severely weakened. Next, he self-studied medicine and massage. Before he left, he had already performed surgery on Lu Yinshen. Logically, with proper care and rehabilitation, he should have been able to ditch the wheelchair and stand up again.
How did his Little Uncle end up like this the moment he left? Lu Yinshen’s leg injury was caused by a car accident; the nerves were not completely dead. When Yan Yi placed his coat on the man’s legs earlier, he had observed them carefully. They could still be saved. This time, he would make sure Lu Yinshen truly stood up.
Having confirmed the next steps of his plan, Yan Yi’s resting mind actually drifted into sleep.
Lu Yinshen sat with his eyes lowered. The dim light cast a shadow across his face. He played with a folding knife in his hand, murmuring to himself, “Back? Or is it…”
The next morning, as the dawn light crept over the horizon, Yan Yi’s eyelashes fluttered and he woke up. His pupil color turned a silvery gray under the sunlight for a split second before returning to an inky black. The silver flash happened so fast it seemed like a mere illusion. He picked up the phone by his head and opened Lu Yinshen’s chat box. The interface remained on the emoji he sent last night.
Yan Yi did not feel awkward; instead, he curled his lips into a smile. His thumb tapped as he typed.
y: Good morning, Uncle. y: [Kitten nuzzles you image]
After waiting a while with no reply, Yan Yi rubbed the screen and smiled. He tossed aside the soft quilt, got up, and went downstairs. He put on an apron, made a simple breakfast, and set it on the dining table. Yan Yi walked back up to the second floor. Before he could even knock, the door opened.
Lu Yinshen controlled his wheelchair to come out. He was still covered by the coat Yan Yi had taken off the night before.
