After My Death, the Richest Heiress Committed Suicide to Be With Me - Chapter 8
Wu Yi walked over with her books, naturally falling into step beside her.
As the two of them walked toward the water room, the group of boys behind them couldn’t resist following, whispering amongst themselves.
“Did you see that? Her face is even more beautiful than her back!”
“That figure is incredible; she completely outshines everyone in our class.”
“The girl she’s with isn’t bad either. Her temperament is quite unique. It’s truly a pair of beauties walking together.”
“Hey, do any of you know which department they’re from? Don’t keep it to yourselves, brothers!”
“Let’s go, let’s go check it out. I never knew Huainan University had beauties of this caliber, let alone two at once!”
These voices weren’t loud, but they were just audible enough, filled with a shallow and unrestrained tone of appraisal, like a swarm of buzzing flies.
Xiao Lou frowned and glanced sideways at Wu Yi, finding her expression calm as if she remained undisturbed by the idle gossip.
However, since this was the first time Wu Yi had come to the school to find her, and she was already being subjected to such interference, Xiao Lou felt a pang of guilt.
“Wait a moment.”
Dropping those words, she turned on her heel and walked toward the group of boys.
Seeing her approach, the boys thought she was coming over to strike up a conversation. They nudged one another, each looking quite smug.
Xiao Lou’s expression grew even colder.
As the boys met her cold gaze, they all began to feel uneasy. Previously, they had only been onlookers from a distance, not daring to be too blatant. Now that they were facing Xiao Lou directly, they realized that this girl not only had a refined beauty but also possessed a detached and aloof aura.
It made one lose the nerve to act recklessly in front of her.
Let alone strike up a conversation or ask for contact information.
“Classmates.”
Hearing her speak, the boys hurriedly offered greetings. “Hello, hello, junior.”
The gaze from the girl opposite them grew even colder, and her voice was exceptionally crisp. “My friend has long heard of Huainan University’s flourishing literary spirit and its reputation as a scholarly sanctuary in the Central Plains. Today is the first time she has come here, drawn by its fame.”
The boys all put on expressions of eager listening, thinking she truly intended to initiate a conversation.
But then, her tone shifted. “Unfortunately, she entered the campus and found no gentlemen, only ruffians.”
“I wonder, what are your thoughts on this?”
The boys stared at her blankly, only processing the meaning of her words a few seconds later. Their faces immediately turned beet red with shame.
Their gazes darted away as they retreated guiltily.
However, there was one thick-skinned individual who, emboldened by the numbers of his group, held his head high and glared back, his voice full of self-righteousness. “Mencius said that the love of beauty is common to all. What’s wrong with us appreciating beauty?”
Xiao Lou spared him a contemptuous glance. “Mencius also said that the sense of shame and dislike is common to all. Why does this classmate only remember the first half of the sentence and fail to mention the rest?”
The boy’s face turned pale and red in turns. Just as he was about to argue further, Xiao Lou pointed toward the rotating security camera on the hallway ceiling.
Her tone was flat. “If you want to be reasonable, go talk to that.”
The boy was instantly silenced.
“Forget it, forget it, let’s go.”
The others, feeling even more guilty upon hearing this, hurriedly dragged him away.
Wu Yi stood behind her, witnessing the entire scene.
She was naturally bright and moving, and for this visit to see Xiao Lou, she had dressed up with care. It wasn’t surprising that she had attracted the attention of these hormone-driven adolescent boys.
Because security guards couldn’t enter the campus, she had been subjected to constant harassment during the hour she spent waiting for Xiao Lou, nearly losing her temper and punching someone.
But wanting to maintain her lady-like image in front of her crush, she had endured it with great difficulty.
She never expected Xiao Lou would take the initiative to settle things for her.
This was truly an unexpected joy that she hadn’t imagined in either of her two lifetimes.
She tried her best to hold it in, but eventually, she couldn’t stop the corners of her lips from curving upward.
Is this what it feels like to be protected by the person you love? she thought sweetly.
“Alright, let’s go.” Xiao Lou turned back, her tone carrying a hint of apology. “I’m truly sorry you had to deal with such unrefined students. I apologize to you on their behalf.”
Wu Yi looked at her, her eyes shining with frightening intensity. “With Classmate Xiao covering for me like this, I’m too happy to have any energy left to care about those idle people.”
“Rest assured, I don’t feel uncomfortable at all.”
Hearing that she truly didn’t mind, Xiao Lou felt an immediate sense of relief. In her heart, she silently savored the words “covering for me.”
She glanced at Wu Yi again. For some reason, she quite liked the feeling of protecting someone.
“That’s good, then.”
Leading Wu Yi toward the water room, she asked casually, “What classical prose were you just reciting?”
“The Analects.”
“Mhm, that’s a key part of the national exam. Which chapter have you reached?”
“I’ve memorized the whole thing.”
Xiao Lou was slightly surprised and glanced at her.
Wu Yi’s tone was natural, and Xiao Lou believed her without hesitation, though she was still astonished. The full text of the Analects consists of twenty volumes and nearly twelve thousand words. It is not easy to memorize in its entirety, and the school didn’t even require memorizing the complete collection.
To be willing to memorize it showed both dedication and genuine interest.
Xiao Lou gave her a look of admiration. “Not bad.”
Wu Yi also turned her face to look at her. “I have a good memory, but I memorized it all at once without fully understanding the deeper meanings. I came today specifically to ask Classmate Xiao to explain it to me.”
Xiao Lou smiled unconsciously. “Does that mean you’ve chosen the Liberal Arts track?”
“Not yet.” Wu Yi tucked a stray hair behind her ear, her gaze thoughtful. “Although my family has been in business for generations, they don’t place restrictions on my academic direction. I just need to learn what needs to be learned, and I’m free to choose the rest.”
“So,” her large, bright eyes radiated a focused light. It wasn’t a social smile; she was simply looking with intense concentration.
It was easy to perceive her sincerity.
“I chose the non-specialized track, aiming to learn as much as possible across different disciplines.”
After the reform of the Dawn Empire’s national exams, they were divided into three modes: Liberal Arts, Sciences, and General Studies (the non-specialized track). However, very few students or parents supported choosing General Studies because it meant the student had to invest far more energy and time than those in specialized tracks to excel.
“Interest is the best teacher. It’s good that you are willing to learn more proactively.”
Xiao Lou offered a simple comment.
Wu Yi knew she was always reserved, so this sentence was considered an extremely understated compliment. She couldn’t stop her lips from curling up again, feeling an uncontrollable surge of happiness.
As they spoke, they reached the water room. Xiao Lou filled her bottle and then took a disposable cup from the nearby storage cabinet, pouring half a cup for Wu Yi.
Seeing that Wu Yi was holding two books and an iPad, leaving her hands somewhat full, Xiao Lou put a lid on the paper cup and carried it herself.
“I’ll carry it to the classroom for you; you can drink it there.”
“Okay.”
Once they reached the classroom, Wu Yi sat properly in the seat beside her. She immediately opened her textbook and iPad, displaying her notes and homework one by one, and concisely summarized her own shortcomings.
“Classmate Xiao, personally I’m still a bit more inclined toward the sciences. Although I can maintain a mid-to-high ranking in liberal arts due to my good memory, I’ll still need to put in a lot of work to truly stand out.”
“So, please feel free to drive me as hard as you can.”
Xiao Lou found it somewhat amusing to see her so solemn and serious.
Unable to resist teasing her, she raised an eyebrow and said, “I can do that, but I am a very strict person. If you can’t finish the assignments I set or if you don’t do them with care, there are two outcomes.”
Wu Yi immediately asked nervously, “What are they?”
Xiao Lou suppressed a smile. “First, naturally, I won’t recognize you as my classmate anymore, and we’ll go our separate ways.”
“As for the second.” She couldn’t help it; a smile overflowed in her eyes. “There will be rewards and punishments.”
“Do well, and you’re rewarded. Do poorly, and you’re punished.”
As Wu Yi looked at her, her expression changed instantly.
Her head suddenly throbbed, and a flood of images rushed in.
Deep within her memory, there was chaos and misery everywhere.
Her hand suddenly gripped her textbook, crushing it into a mess of wrinkles with a creaking sound.
Xiao Lou was startled. “Student Wu, are you unwell somewhere?”
The voice sounded like heavenly music, dragging Wu Yi out of hell.
She was drenched in cold sweat, her mind and body trembling, as she forced herself to calm down.
“It’s nothing. I might be starting my period soon, and I had a sudden stomach cramp.”
She quickly made up an excuse, lowering her head to flip through her textbook while a deep pain remained hidden in her eyes.
She hadn’t expected that in this new life, history would still be so strikingly similar.
During those two years at Darklite, she had forced Xiao Lou to stay by her side, finding any way she could to entangle her in teaching and seeking rewards by any means possible, completely draining her of all her gentleness and doting care.
Xiao Lou observed her for a moment and pushed her cup over. “Hot water. Take a few sips to warm yourself up.”
Wu Yi, still unsettled, immediately picked it up and took small sips.
“Don’t worry, I’m in good health. I’m fine. Let’s start.”
“Alright.”
With Xiao Lou being serious and Wu Yi being dedicated, the two of them were soon immersed in the work.
This study hall was quite remote, so few students came here. People left one after another, and it grew quieter and quieter.
Gradually, only the sound of Xiao Lou’s explanations remained. her voice was cool, low, and slow, with exceptionally clear, spirited, and serious articulation.
Wu Yi watched her without blinking, afraid of missing even the slightest expression or a single syllable.
Occasionally, she looked so intently that Xiao Lou had to stop and remind her.
“Student Wu, look at the textbook. Don’t keep looking at me.”
“Oh… okay.” Flustered, Wu Yi lowered her head and aimlessly flipped through the pages.
This earned her another blunt reminder. “Student Wu, it’s not this page.”
Xiao Lou tapped her long fingers on the table. “Stay focused. It wasn’t easy for you to come all this way.”
Ashamed and guilty, Wu Yi hurried to focus her mind.
She was reluctant to let go, wishing only to stay by her side for as long as possible.
Every time Xiao Lou finished explaining a section of the Analects, Wu Yi would continuously raise her own questions and insights. It was both a sincere request for guidance and a deliberate attempt to keep her there.
Seeing her so eager to learn, Xiao Lou felt a surge of professional pride and taught with great focus.
Unbeknownst to them, time flew by.
“Classmates, time’s up. Hurry back to your dorms; we’re locking up the building.”
Both of them snapped back to reality at the same time and found the security patrol for the teaching building standing at the door.
They were startled to find that it was already ten-thirty, and they were the only ones left in the classroom.
The two of them looked at each other and laughed.
The patrolling guard tapped the door with his flashlight. “Don’t linger, you two. Head back to your dorms early.”
The two of them immediately scrambled to pack up.
Seeing this, the guard moved on to patrol the other classrooms.
Xiao Lou had quite a few books, and since she read whatever caught her interest, she had several books open at once, scattered across two tables.
Wu Yi rushed to help her, but she had never done this kind of work before. Yet, wanting to do something for Xiao Lou, she hurriedly gathered books of different sizes together, forcing Xiao Lou to take them out and restack them.
She was simply making things more difficult the more she tried to help.
She continued to solemnly hand over other books. “This one, and this one, for you.”
She was like a hardworking little squirrel foraging everywhere.
Xiao Lou reached out and placed her hand on top of her head. “Don’t move. I’ll do it myself.”
Wu Yi froze instantly.
She watched as Xiao Lou efficiently packed her books into her backpack and slung it over her shoulder.
“It’s so late. How are you getting back?”
“My family is coming to pick me up.”
“Let’s go, I’ll walk you there.”
Xiao Lou turned away from the desk only to see the other girl hadn’t moved. She was still standing there blankly, as if her pressure points had been struck.
How amusing.
In a playful mood, Xiao Lou reached out again and lightly tapped her forehead.
“There, pressure point struck.”
Only then did Wu Yi realize she had been staring again. Her face flushed with embarrassment, and she hurriedly walked out.
“Hey,” Xiao Lou called out to her.
Surprised, she turned back to see Xiao Lou approaching with her books and iPad, her eyes full of smiles.
“Don’t you want your own books and tablet?”
Wu Yi reached out to take them, but Xiao Lou simply tucked them under her own arm. “Forget it, I’ll carry them for you. I’ll walk you to your family.”
Wu Yi followed behind her blankly.
Her gaze was complex and lingering.
A Xiao Lou who was so high-spirited, talking and laughing freely, was someone she had never been able to experience before.
She was pure, youthful, and full of the sharp energy of youth—relaxed yet composed.
Wu Yi suddenly felt like crying. What exactly did I do in my last life?
I robbed her of her most beautiful years.
The teaching building was exceptionally quiet, with only the urging of the security patrol and the sound of their footsteps.
Each step was so clear.
“Is your family picking you up at the West Gate?”
Only then did Wu Yi remember what she wanted to say. “Oh right, I wanted to say that my family is picking me up by car. They have to go through the East Gate to get onto the Ring Road. I happen to have one more question to ask. Classmate Xiao, why don’t you come with.”
Hurried footsteps and a crisp voice came from downstairs. “Xiao Lou, why are you still in the study hall? You didn’t answer my calls; you must have put it on silent again. I looked everywhere before I finally found you.”
Wu Yi stopped abruptly. She recognized that voice as Mo Qinghan’s.
Mo Qinghan skipped up the steps, holding up her skirt as she hurried upstairs, continuing to speak as she walked. “Lou, don’t study so late in the future.”
“Xiao Han, why are you here so late?” Xiao Lou went to meet her.
“Because I was worried about you…” Mo Qinghan looked up as she reached the top of the stairs, her voice cutting off abruptly.
Then, her expression changed drastically, and she let out a sharp cry: “Wu Yi, why are you here?”
