After My Death, the Richest Heiress Committed Suicide to Be With Me - Chapter 6
Wu Yi’s gaze grew even brighter. Her beautiful eyes were filled with flowing light, brilliant, soft, and intense.
Looking into them, one could even feel that light surging, as if it would pour out from her eyes at any second and envelop you.
For some reason, Xiao Lou keenly felt every bit of such intense emotional fluctuation. Normally, she would certainly find it awkward or uncomfortable, but at this moment, she could clearly sense that the owner of these eyes was desperately suppressing her own joyful emotions, for fear of scaring someone away.
It was very hot and very sincere, intertwining to form a subtle and unique atmosphere.
Xiao Lou did not feel awkward or that it was intrusive. She even felt that this person was a bit like herself: whatever was in her heart manifested on the outside. It was a kind of truth where the inside and outside were one, and she was that kind of person too.
Her placid mood brightened slightly.
Wu Yi looked at her with an incredibly bright gaze, forgetting to speak. She did nothing, yet she didn’t feel any discomfort.
The two of them just stood there quietly.
The nannies of the Wu family were strictly disciplined and would never interfere with the master’s words or deeds. It was Aunt Liu who hurried over from behind, observing the situation. Realizing her young mistress was in a daze, she quickly whispered a reminder.
“Miss, Teacher Xiao is here. Would you like to invite her to the study for some tea?”
She knew Wu Yi and Lin Xia did not get along. Since Lin Xia was currently sitting alone in the dining room, she did not lead them in that direction.
“Ah, right! I would like to invite Teacher Xiao for a cup of green tea.”
Xiao Lou saw her graceful figure stir as she immediately made a gesture of invitation. Her eyes remained fixed on Xiao Lou, looking particularly attentive and respectful.
“Teacher Xiao, is that alright?”
Unaccountably, Xiao Lou thought of a lost fawn startled by a movement in the forest, coming to its senses in a daze.
A touch of warmth welled up in her eyes, and she did not refuse. “Okay.”
The trepidation and nervousness in Wu Yi’s eyes instantly transformed into a wide smile.
Just as she was about to lead Xiao Lou to the study, a calm and cold voice came from behind them.
“So this is that Teacher Xiao who changed her mind at the last minute?”
Hearing this voice, Wu Yi immediately spun around and stood in front of Xiao Lou to shield her.
Her entire aura changed drastically. She looked at Lin Xia with a sharp gaze. “Director Lin, do you intend to go back on the agreement we just made?”
Lin Xia glanced at her, then swept her gaze over Xiao Lou behind her, a hint of playfulness appearing at the corners of her lips.
Interesting. The profligate wealthy heiress placed great importance on this poor university student and was full of vigilance toward her.
Lin Xia remained unruffled and said indifferently, “It stands. However, we are about to eat. Do you want to invite Teacher Xiao to dine with us?”
After speaking, she signaled to Aunt Liu. “Start setting the table.” She then turned back toward the dining room.
Wu Yi’s tense mind relaxed. Realizing her oversight, she quickly turned to look at Xiao Lou. “Teacher Xiao, you’ve traveled a long way to get here, you must be starving. Would you do me the honor of having a simple meal?”
Xiao Lou shook her head. “No need, I’ve already eaten. I came here to say a few things clearly in person, and I’ll leave once I’m done.”
Wu Yi was stunned for a moment, instantly understanding Xiao Lou’s intention. She grew incredibly anxious and looked at her with a bit of panic, asking very seriously, “Teacher Xiao, I feel like you dislike formalities just as much as I do, but I am very worried you’ll go hungry. So I must ask one more time: if you are afraid of it being awkward, I can have the meal arranged in the study. I definitely won’t let you feel uncomfortable. Do you think that’s okay?”
Xiao Lou heard the exceptional sincerity in her tone and felt the thoughtfulness of being understood. Nevertheless, she still shook her head. “I really have eaten, there’s no need to go to the trouble.”
Wu Yi immediately said, “Alright, then let’s go to the study to talk.”
She took half a step forward, standing aside to invite her. Xiao Lou followed her upstairs.
Wu Yi walked very slowly, matching her pace to Xiao Lou’s rhythm. Once they finished the steps, she walked side-by-side with Xiao Lou.
As they walked, she said with some happiness, “Teacher Xiao, actually I was just about to go looking for you. I didn’t expect you to come here. I’m really so happy.”
Xiao Lou was slightly surprised. “Looking for me?”
“Yes! I originally wanted to save that kitten, but I didn’t expect that in the end, Teacher Xiao would save both of us. I’ve never raised a small animal before and was afraid I wouldn’t do it well, but it would be very irresponsible to leave it all to you alone. So I planned to go take a look and do my part.”
She turned her face as she spoke, gazing at Xiao Lou with an earnest look. “In the future, may I go to see the kitten often?”
So it was for that. Xiao Lou couldn’t help but laugh. “Of course you can.”
“That’s great! Then Teacher Xiao must leave me an address and a phone number later, otherwise I’d have to ask everyone on the streets.”
Thinking of the purpose of her visit, Xiao Lou felt a bit awkward. She could only pick up the topic. “So if I hadn’t come to find you, you really would have gone to the streets to ask?”
Wu Yi nodded. “That was the plan. Hard work pays off, I definitely would have found you.”
They happened to arrive at the study. The nanny had already set out the tea. Wu Yi led Xiao Lou inside, and the nanny closed the door behind them.
Only the two of them remained in the room.
Xiao Lou stopped at the door and looked around. She saw that the study was elegant, quiet, and simply decorated.
By the window was a desk. The bookshelf behind it was not crammed full; it only held four rows of books, all arranged neatly.
A stack of books was piled at the end of the desk, followed by a pen rack, inkstone, and other items. At the corner of the desk and by the window sat a pot of vibrant orchids with lush green leaves and a beautiful shape, cared for very diligently.
In front of the desk, near the windowsill, was a tea table for two, with hot tea emitting a faint fragrance.
On the wall directly facing the desk hung a piece of calligraphy and painting, a picture of bamboo and stones. She looked closely and saw traces of imitating Master Banqiao, but the skill was profound. The painted bamboo and stones were lean, strong, and lofty, with an extraordinary style. The inscription on the side was natural and elegant, possessing the charm of the Wei and Jin Dynasties.
She had truly seen some real skill here.
Aside from this, there were no extra decorations in the study.
She felt a slight sense of appreciation.
Wu Yi was paying close attention to her expression. Seeing that her eyes were calm, Wu Yi breathed a sigh of relief and led her to sit at the tea table, sitting opposite her.
“Teacher Xiao, please have some tea.”
Xiao Lou took a sip of tea. The words she was about to say lingered in her mind, and she felt a bit of pressure.
How was it that this student was somewhat different from what her seniors had described?
After thinking it over, she took the initiative to speak. “Student Wu Yi, it was my fault for breaking our previous appointment. I didn’t think things through when I first accepted the tutoring job. Later, considering I’ve just entered university, I felt I should prioritize my studies, so I had my senior decline the offer.”
“I am truly sorry for the trouble I caused you.”
Wu Yi had already guessed her thoughts, but hearing it still left her feeling very dejected. She secretly hated herself for being so rebellious and willful in the past, causing her to have such a bad reputation that it scared off such a good person.
She quickly said, “Teacher Xiao, please don’t say that. You made a special trip here to explain in person. Based on that intent alone, I feel you are definitely not someone who would break an appointment on purpose. There must have been a misunderstanding.”
“So it’s okay. You really should prioritize your studies.”
Xiao Lou was a bit surprised. She had thought that saying it would make the other party unhappy.
After all, she was the one who had changed her mind at the last minute, which went against the spirit of a contract.
In fact, Wu Yi was right. This broken appointment was actually declined by Mo Qinghan behind her back through the senior who acted as the introducer. She only found out after the fact.
However, Mo Qinghan did it for her own good. She took it to heart and didn’t want to expose the matter, so she took the responsibility upon herself.
Having stated her purpose, she didn’t speak again, intending to leave after finishing her tea.
Wu Yi was hesitating incessantly. She shifted left and right in the curved-back armchair, unable to sit still. The person in front of her was someone she had fought desperately to meet again. If she couldn’t establish some kind of connection, how would she enter her world in the future?
Watching the person opposite her quietly drinking tea, knowing she might leave the moment the teacup was set down, Wu Yi grew more and more anxious. She couldn’t help but ask cautiously, “Teacher Xiao, do you really not plan to be my tutor? Actually, I am very good and obedient. I do all the homework the teachers assign, and I have a strong learning ability. I can learn by analogy. It won’t be too tiring or time-consuming for you to teach me.”
Xiao Lou looked at her with surprise.
Wu Yi thought she didn’t believe her and grew frantic. She stood up and walked quickly to the desk.
“Really, Teacher Xiao.”
She went behind the desk, quickly opened a textbook and a workbook, and sat down straight. Grabbing a pen, she asked Xiao Lou, “If you don’t believe me, give me a question right now. I promise to do it very diligently.”
She emphasized solemnly, “Really.”
The eyes looking over were full of the frustration and urgency of wanting to prove herself.
Her red lips were pursed, full of trepidation yet unwilling to give up. That stubborn look made Xiao Lou feel that if she didn’t speak soon, this girl might actually cry from anxiety.
The corners of her lips curled up, and a hint of amusement flickered in her eyes.
This girl was clearly very well-behaved. Even if her academic performance was average, she didn’t seem to have a mischievous nature. How did such a reputation get around?
It seemed rumors really could be harmful.
Suppressing a smile, she said, “In that case, I will set a simple question to see your level.”
Wu Yi widened her beautiful eyes and nodded vigorously. “Mhm!”
Xiao Lou stood up and began to pace with her hands behind her back. Wu Yi’s gaze remained firmly locked onto her, capturing every slight expression and smile.
Today, she was wearing a vintage, moon-white traditional Chinese dress that looked elegant and refined. Her long hair was gathered behind her head and tied with a ribbon. Her neck and wrists were devoid of any jewelry, and with her picturesque features, she looked fresh and graceful, like a lady walking straight out of an ancient painting.
As she walked, her voice rang out clear and bright. “Confucius said: Do not do to others what you would not have them do to you. But if it is something you do desire, then what?”
Those clear eyes looked over, quiet and gentle, yet filled with the pride and brilliance of youth, seemingly peering right into Wu Yi’s heart.
Wu Yi’s heart gave a sudden thud. She felt as though the wheels of fate were rumbling toward her, delivering a proposition she had personally lived through for two lifetimes.
Do not do to others what you would not have them do to you. In her previous life, she had forced herself upon Xiao Lou for an entire lifetime. If the roles were reversed and Xiao Lou treated her that way, would she be able to endure it?
If it is something you do desire, then what? Memories surged, and her heart felt as if it were being pierced by ten thousand arrows once again.
A flash of intense pain crossed her eyes, and she abruptly set her pen aside.
“Teacher Xiao, I cannot answer this question because I don’t understand it.”
Xiao Lou looked at her with confusion. She had just been thinking how well-behaved this student was.
Wu Yi stood up and looked her directly in the eye. “If it is about how one conducts oneself in the world, then naturally it is ‘do not do to others what you would not have them do to you,’ and even ‘do not do to others what you yourself greatly desire.’ But what I don’t understand is, if I love someone very, very much but she doesn’t love me back, must I give up immediately?”
Without waiting for Xiao Lou’s answer, she continued on her own. “Everyone has their own obsessions and things they value most. Matters can be handled rationally, but emotions are difficult. If I give up, I will live with regret forever because I didn’t give it my all. If I don’t give up and continue to pursue her, it will cause her distress.”
She stared at Xiao Lou, asking the conflict in her heart. “Teacher Xiao, if you encountered this situation, what would you do?”
Xiao Lou raised an eyebrow. She hadn’t expected the girl to kick the ball back into her court, but as someone holding the title of teacher, she couldn’t show weakness.
After a moment of thought, she said, “Naturally, one should stick to the original intention. The original intention of love is love itself, wishing the best for her. Therefore, her being happy and peaceful is what matters most.”
“Is that so?” Wu Yi’s mind drifted, seeing scene after scene from her past life. In order to keep the secret of Mo Qinghan’s parentage, she had endured humiliation and heavy burdens. She was misunderstood, vilified, accused, and called a heartless person, and she had endured it all in silence without a single word of defense. From beginning to end, she had given everything willingly.
She gazed blankly at Xiao Lou.
Xiao Lou coughed, feeling that discussing emotional entanglements before she had even officially started tutoring might lead the student astray.
She took a step forward. “Student Wu Yi, it is fine if you don’t do the question. However, you are currently in your third year of middle school; you should focus on your studies and try not to get distracted.”
“I’m not!” Wu Yi blurted out, her voice so loud it startled them both.
Xiao Lou froze. She saw the girl standing there at a loss, saying nervously, “Teacher Xiao, I don’t have anyone I like right now, and I’m not distracted. I will definitely study hard.”
Xiao Lou breathed a sigh of relief, a smile appearing in her eyes. “Mhm, keep it up.”
Wu Yi was still looking at her, asking tentatively, “Then, can you be my tutor?”
Xiao Lou found herself in a difficult position. She had just promised Mo Qinghan that she wouldn’t take this job.
Seeing her silence, Wu Yi grew uneasy, and her voice dropped. “Actually, I am a bit willful, so my reputation as a student isn’t very good. Other tutors aren’t willing to teach me.”
“But,” she looked at Xiao Lou with burning eyes, “I want to work hard now. I want to get into a good university. Teacher Xiao, can you help me?”
Her eyes were filled with a hopeful light as she looked over intently. Xiao Lou’s heart softened and, after a moment of hesitation, she finally nodded.
“Really?”
The voice opposite her was jubilant. Wu Yi happily took a step closer but stopped herself, even taking half a step back. An uncontrollable joy radiated from her pretty face.
Xiao Lou said helplessly, “I won’t be your official tutor, but I can help you.”
Wu Yi immediately asked, “Then how will you help me?”
“I indeed have a busy course schedule.” Xiao Lou felt secretly ashamed. The previous lie required another to cover it up. She continued, “So I can’t be a formal tutor. However, I can use my time after class to occasionally give you some guidance.”
Wu Yi looked at her expectantly, nodding repeatedly.
“And don’t call me Teacher. I am just helping out a little; I don’t deserve that title.”
Wu Yi’s heart trembled. Isn’t it even better not to call her Teacher? I can interact with her as a peer and get even closer.
“Then what should I call you?”
“Just call me Classmate.”
Wu Yi gave a brilliant smile, as radiant as the sunset clouds. “Classmate Xiao, then I’ll have to trouble you to help me with my homework from now on.”
It was truly a case of “at the end of the hills and rivers where one doubts there is a path, the shade of willows and bright flowers bring one to another village.” Her eyes darted around, and she said with a smile, “To avoid troubling Classmate Xiao by making you come all the way to my house and delaying your own studies, I’ll go to your dormitory or your study room to find you in the future, okay?”
Xiao Lou thought about it and agreed. “Alright. I’ve delayed your dinner, so I’ll head back now.”
Wu Yi was incredibly reluctant to see her go, but she didn’t dare try to keep her any longer, fearing that if she lost control, she might scare the person away.
She personally walked Xiao Lou out. Her heart was full of longing and unease, and a thousand words were piled up in her chest, yet she didn’t dare to speak as recklessly as she had in her previous life. Xiao Lou also disliked small talk, so they walked to the front gate in silence.
As they were about to part, Wu Yi finally spoke. “Classmate Xiao, my classmates all call me A-Yi. If you don’t mind, you can call me that too.”
A Yi.
Xiao Lou stood across from her. Hearing those two words was like the sudden tolling of a morning bell, shaking her to her core. Her ears rang and her vision blurred. Suddenly, she heard a lot of noisy sounds, followed by a series of images flashing through her mind: she had accepted this tutoring job and arrived at this three-story Western-style building. Just as she entered and looked up, a girl in a black dress looked down from the second-floor railing with a condescending gaze. “Are you my new tutor?”
Her gaze was as cold as that of an enemy.
Xiao Lou’s heart was suddenly pricked by something. It hurt so much she could hardly breathe.
The images in her mind continued. One moment it was a girl in a black dress recklessly tearing up her lesson plans; the next, it was the girl in the purple dress before her, asking with concern, “Classmate Xiao, what’s wrong?”
