After My Death, the Richest Heiress Committed Suicide to Be With Me - Chapter 4
The girl with long hair draped over her shoulders was dressed in white, as pure and beautiful as snow. Her slender, elegant figure was bathed in the dim orange glow of the streetlights, her silhouette outlined by a soft halo as if she had stepped out from a portal of light.
Wu Yi stared blankly.
In an instant, the streetlights, the pedestrians, the vehicles, and even the heavens and the earth transformed into a blurred, illusory background.
In her eyes, there was only her.
“Fellow student, are you alright?”
Xiao Lou studied the girl before her, who seemed to have been scared witless. Her gaze inadvertently collided with the girl’s eyes; the moment their stares met, Xiao Lou froze slightly, coming to a standstill.
A long time passed.
The world gradually regained its clarity, and the sounds that had vanished returned bit by bit.
First, a hum flooded her ears from a great distance, then it grew into a clamor from all directions, until various noises erupted around them.
Cars roared away, bicycle bells chimed, pedestrians talked as they brushed past, and a bus announced its next stop in a clear, practiced broadcast.
The driver of the car, who had braked in a fit of rage, poked his head out of the window. He glared at the two girls staring at each other and threw out a single word—”Crazy”—before driving off.
“Miss Yi, are you hurt?”
The two bodyguards and the driver crowded around her, asking questions with concern.
“Miss Yi, are you okay?”
“Miss Yi?”
Xiao Lou snapped out of her daze like waking from a dream.
The girl opposite her continued to stare deeply into her eyes. Though she hadn’t spoken a word, she looked as if she had a thousand things to say.
Xiao Lou suddenly felt a strange sensation, as if she had known this person for a very long time.
In her heart, a flurry of inexplicable emotions flickered: a touch of nostalgia, a sense of loss, confusion, and a bit of panic. It took her a moment to compose herself. She spoke to the girl: “Fellow student, as long as you are okay. I’m leaving now.”
Just as she was about to turn away, she noticed the girl’s dazed expression shift into one of extreme agitation. Her mouth was slightly open, her red lips trembling uncontrollably, and even her shoulders shook with the surge of emotion.
She looked desperate to say something.
Xiao Lou stopped in her tracks instinctively, waiting quietly.
But the girl struggled for a long time without making any sound at all.
The three men surrounding her continued their anxious inquiries, but the girl seemed not to hear them. She just stared straight at Xiao Lou with a gaze so deep it felt like it could swallow someone whole. Every one of her thick, dark eyelashes trembled as if emotions were overflowing from her eyes, yet she remained silent.
Can she not speak?
The moment the thought crossed her mind, Xiao Lou saw tears suddenly begin to fall rapidly from those deep eyes.
Large beads of tears rolled down from her wide eyes, wetting her thick lashes, sliding down her cheeks to the tip of her chin, and dripping onto her chest. Soon, they soaked a wet patch into the bodice of her white dress.
Xiao Lou watched in shock, suddenly feeling as if her heart had been pricked by a needle. It was a sharp, sudden pain.
She clutched her chest in discomfort and let out a muffled groan.
“Xiao Lou!”
A crisp, sweet voice called out from behind.
Xiao Lou turned in surprise to see her classmate, Mo Qinghan, hurrying toward them through the night.
Mo Qinghan was wearing a water-blue dress. She was youthful and beautiful, with a gentle and charming aura. Her lovely, waist-length hair fluttered in the night wind, and her rounded chest rose and fell as she panted from the run. She reached Xiao Lou’s side so quickly she nearly bumped into her arm.
Because she was standing so close, Xiao Lou could hear her hurried breathing. The slightly warm breath brushed against Xiao Lou’s neck, carrying a faint, delicate feminine fragrance. Xiao Lou instinctively took a small step back.
Mo Qinghan looked at her with bright, almond-shaped eyes and said between breaths, “Didn’t I tell you? Why did you come out again?”
Xiao Lou gave her a strange look and replied politely, “Student Mo, why are you here?”
“I was worried about you.” Her tone was somewhat reproachful, and she gave Xiao Lou a slight, coquettish glare. “Do you know how long I’ve been looking for you?”
As she spoke, she reached out to hook her arm into Xiao Lou’s. Her fragrant, warm body pressed against Xiao Lou’s side. Xiao Lou felt incredibly uncomfortable. She quietly tried to pull her arm away, feeling a bit apologetic as she said, “I’m sorry, Student Mo Qinghan, for making you worry.”
Mo Qinghan’s elegant brows furrowed, and the light in her eyes dimmed for a split second before returning to a calm state.
However, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Wu Yi staring fixedly at Xiao Lou. A flash of ruthlessness crossed her eyes.
She pursed her lips and looked intently at Xiao Lou’s handsome, refined face. A deep, lingering obsession filled her gaze as she said in a soft, gentle voice, “I asked two seniors and a fellow student for you. They all agreed that the student is unruly and impossible to teach.”
After a pause, her tone became even softer. She whispered, “I am your best friend; I would never lie to you. Surely you believe me?”
Under Mo Qinghan’s bright, sincere gaze, and seeing that she had rushed here specifically for this matter, Xiao Lou felt a stir of gratitude.
She replied immediately, “Of course I believe you. It’s just that, since I initially agreed to it, I felt it was only proper to explain my change of heart in person.”
Mo Qinghan lowered her eyes slightly, looking a bit dejected. She whispered, “Lou, I won’t lie to you. Promise me you won’t take this tutoring job, okay? I’m truly worried about you.”
Her tone carried a mixture of disappointment and intimate concern. Xiao Lou found it a bit sudden and uncomfortable, but since it was a well-intentioned gesture from a classmate complete with “evidence”, she reconsidered.
After a moment of thought, she nodded. “Alright, I won’t take it. Thank you for caring so much.”
Mo Qinghan’s mood brightened instantly. “Great! Let’s head back to the dormitory then.”
Just as Xiao Lou was about to reply, a “meow” from a cat broke her concentration.
She remembered what had just happened and turned to see Wu Yi still staring blankly at her, tears flowing silently. The little white kitten she had saved poked its furry head out of Wu Yi’s arms, looking around timidly. Suddenly, it scurried out and jumped from Wu Yi’s embrace to the ground.
Xiao Lou quickly stepped forward and caught the kitten before it could run away. She stood up holding the cat, noticing that the three men were trying to grab Wu Yi’s arms to drag her away, but she wouldn’t budge.
Startled, Xiao Lou walked over with the cat and demanded, “Who are you people?”
Having witnessed her save Wu Yi at a life-and-death moment, the bodyguards and driver had a good impression of her. They explained politely, “She is our young lady. Thank you for saving her just now.”
Standing behind Xiao Lou, Mo Qinghan stared coldly at Wu Yi. Her hands, hanging at her sides, had clenched into fists at some point. A moment later, her tense body relaxed. She looked away and pulled at Xiao Lou’s arm.
“Lou, they clearly know each other. Let’s go back to the dorm; it’s almost curfew.”
Watching the girl cry silently before her, despite her being a stranger, Xiao Lou felt an inexplicable pang in her heart.
The feeling was strange and sudden, leaving her flustered and uneasy. She turned a scrutinizing gaze toward the bodyguards and driver, trying to detect anything suspicious.
Just then, a call came from across the street: “A-Yi!”
Everyone looked over to see a stylish, beautiful girl with long curly hair waving from the other side.
The bodyguard said happily, “It’s Miss Qi Qing. It’ll be fine now that she’s here.”
Mo Qinghan’s eyes flickered. She took the initiative to pull on Xiao Lou’s arm. “Lou, look, she has so many people to take care of her. There’s nothing left for us to do here. Let’s go.”
“Okay.” Xiao Lou felt relieved and placed the little kitten back into Wu Yi’s arms.
Wu Yi remained in a daze, merely staring at her, her arms still held in the position of holding the cat. Xiao Lou easily tucked the kitten into her embrace.
“Fellow student, I’m leaving the kitten with you. Take care.”
Mo Qinghan pushed her at the right moment. “Lou, let’s go.”
“Alright.” Xiao Lou turned to leave with her.
Mo Qinghan linked her arm tightly with Xiao Lou’s, walking close to her. After a few steps, she glanced back at Wu Yi with a chilling, sharp look in her eyes. She then withdrew her gaze and flashed a charming smile at Xiao Lou. “Lou, I like it when you call me Xiao Han. I don’t like it when you call me ‘Student Mo’; it sounds so distant.”
Xiao Lou didn’t speak for a moment. She thought to herself: Why did my heart hurt so much, like a needle prick, when I saw her cry?
I don’t even know her.
She couldn’t help but look back. Across the growing distance, she saw the girl named Qi Qing reach the other side of the road and embrace the crying girl while saying something. Then, the girl who had been standing like a statue suddenly moved, grabbing Qi Qing and shouting something.
Then, she heard a somewhat shrill and desperate cry: “Wait!”
For no reason, Xiao Lou stopped. Mo Qinghan stopped as well.
Both of them looked back.
Wu Yi was running toward them at full speed, clutching the little kitten.
Mo Qinghan’s brows furrowed, her whole body tensing up. As she watched the approaching face, her gaze grew colder and colder.
Wu Yi ran fast at first, then slowed down. As she reached them, her steps almost came to a halt. She walked very cautiously, as if she were worried about something, yet there was something so important drawing her that she had to come.
Her eyes were fixed solely on Xiao Lou. Her steps were perfectly straight until she stood right in front of her.
Under the orange glow of the streetlights, she stopped directly opposite Xiao Lou and looked up slightly. Her face under the light was radiant and incomparably beautiful.
Her thick, curled lashes flickered with her gaze, shaking off two trails of tears. One tear hung amidst her dark lashes, glistening and refusing to fall.
Xiao Lou’s heart felt that needle-like prick again—a soft, light pain.
Seeing the girl look at her, her lips moving but still unable to speak, Xiao Lou felt compelled to ask, “Fellow student, is there something you need?”
The moment she finished speaking, a bundle of fur was tucked into her arms. The kitten let out a “meow,” its front paws clutching her wrist. Its claws dug into her skin, causing a bit of pain.
Xiao Lou felt it struggling to run, so she held it tight and reached out to rub its furry head, soothing the little creature in a gentle voice: “Be good.”
Opposite her, Wu Yi finally managed to speak. “Can you keep the kitten? I’m afraid I won’t raise it well.”
Xiao Lou noticed that after she spoke, she pursed her lips and watched her tensely, as if she were terrified of being rejected. Xiao Lou’s heart softened inexplicably, and she nodded in agreement before she even realized it. “Alright.”
