After My Death, the Richest Heiress Committed Suicide to Be With Me - Chapter 10.1
At that moment, Wang Xianya saw Wu Yi finish a question and slide open her phone screen to tap into the message inbox, scrolling back and forth.
Seemingly not finding what she wanted, Wu Yi tossed the phone back onto the desk with a sharp clatter.
Wang Xianya’s eyes darted around as she spoke up. “Eldest Miss, are you waiting for a message? Tell me who’s so fearless that they haven’t replied to you promptly. I’ll go settle the score for you!”
Wu Yi lifted her gaze, sweeping it coldly over her. “Shut up!”
The seven or eight profligate followers who had been muttering non-stop all fell silent.
However, within a few minutes, the bored group began chirping again.
Wu Yi rubbed her brow and set down her pen.
Seeing this, Nangong Jin immediately came forward to please her by massaging her shoulders. “Miss Yi, look how exhausting studying is. It’s hard on the body and the eyes, and you could easily get cervical spondylosis. You are the future richest person in the world; why should you endure this hardship?”
Wang Xianya immediately chimed in. “Exactly! Sitting here is like being in prison. Eldest Miss, let’s go out for a stroll. I just found a great spot… Heh.”
As she spoke, she gave Wu Yi a look that said, you know what I mean.
Wu Yi’s lip twitched. She hadn’t expected that the first stumbling block on her path to becoming a good student would be her own followers.
She waved her hand for Nangong Jin to step back.
Then, she leaned back against the desk behind her, crossed her arms over her chest, and spoke in her usual imperious tone. “Here’s the plan. Go and tell everyone that I, Wu Yi, am aiming for the top three in class for this semester’s final exams, and the top three in the grade for next year’s national exams.”
“What? Eldest Miss, you’re playing for real! Did that first-in-the-grade guy, Lin Shushan, say something disrespectful to you?”
Wu Yi had no patience for this group of idlers. Her face grew cold. “Why all the chatter? Go already!”
Wang Xianya and Nangong Jin were startled and immediately agreed. “Going. Going right now.”
“Let’s move, we’ve got work to do!”
The group of young men and women seemed to have found a source of amusement, and they were all suddenly full of energy.
Wu Yi watched them leave and shook her head.
She guessed they were certainly going to find trouble for Lin Shushan.
This was an aristocratic school where the students were all either wealthy or from prestigious families. Lin Shushan, who ranked first in the grade, was also from a prominent family.
Wu Yi wasn’t worried at all about him being bullied.
There was nothing for it; only one profligate could defeat another.
She wasn’t afraid of becoming a laughingstock once the news got out. In her view, aiming for the top three was actually being modest.
Besides, if she wanted to be the head of the family, she had to show some strength; otherwise, the “rats” hiding in the shadows wouldn’t jump out on their own.
She thought of the scenes from her past: Baiyun Mountain, Darklite, the family council there were rats causing trouble everywhere. Her gaze suddenly turned icy.
It was one thing to harm her, but to harm Lou Lou? They were asking for death!
Before she left, she had fought hard to earn a lifeline for the family. Knowing those old fogies, they certainly wouldn’t follow her instructions obediently.
Very well. Now that she was back, she could take everything into her own hands!
“A-Yi, you didn’t go back at noon? Why didn’t you answer when I called you?”
Qi Qing strode in. A few boys huddled together whispering in the classroom saw her and immediately scattered like a swarm of bees.
Qi Qing was one grade above Wu Yi. When she first enrolled, no one knew her background, and she was voted the “spicy campus belle” by a group of rowdy boys. People would occasionally sneak her love letters. Eventually, unable to take it anymore, she dragged a boy who sent her a letter to the Dean’s office. The boy was severely reprimanded by the Dean, forced to write a self-criticism, and had his parents called in. From then on, no boy dared to approach her.
Wu Yi said in surprise, “What’s wrong? I was in class this morning and had my phone on silent.”
In truth, she had been restless all morning, checking her phone eight hundred times.
Qi Qing said crossly, “Didn’t I tell you last night? I made an appointment with someone from the research institute.”
She looked disdainfully at Wu Yi’s boxed lunch. “Come with me to the Maurice Restaurant. I’ve ordered the French cuisine you like.”
“What time is the appointment? I still have classes this afternoon.”
“They’re waiting. Don’t worry, it won’t take long.”
Wu Yi thought about it, grabbed her iPad, and set off with her.
While passing the plaza, she saw three boys standing under the lush cypress trees in the nearby garden, shoving another boy around.
Wu Yi stopped.
“Why have we stopped?” Qi Qing followed her gaze. “The one leading them is Guo Yiming from the Guo family. He’s a waste of space who only knows how to bully people.”
Wu Yi’s gaze landed on the boy being surrounded. “Qingqing, go help him.”
Qi Qing was baffled. “What are you up to now?”
Wu Yi smiled. “Just a bit of chivalry—helping out those in need.”
Qi Qing walked over helplessly. Her fierce reputation preceded her, and a few words were enough to scare Guo Yiming away.
Jiang Donglai, bruised and with a bleeding lip, scrambled up from the ground. He glanced at her, then at Wu Yi, said nothing, and limped away.
Qi Qing returned, dusting off her hands. “See? He’s an ungrateful wolf. Not even a thank you.”
Wu Yi smiled, thinking to herself that he wasn’t ungrateful, but a clever and reliable business genius.
That boy was Jiang Donglai, the illegitimate son of the Jiang family. She hadn’t expected them to be at the same school.
Since they had crossed paths, she might as well end his tragic youth a bit earlier.
The two of them arrived at the restaurant, and the waiter immediately filled the table with food.
“Aren’t we waiting for the guest?”
Qi Qing curled her lip. “I ordered these specifically for you. Meeting someone isn’t about the meal.”
“Alright. Hurry up and eat.”
Wu Yi opened her iPad, watching a course lecture while she ate.
Qi Qing sat beside her and glanced over. “That’s last year’s lecture video. The curriculum changed this year, so it’s useless to watch that.”
Wu Yi didn’t blink. “The essence remains the same despite all the changes.” She remained absorbed in the video.
Seeing her take a bite and then watch for a while until the food was almost cold, Qi Qing found it somewhat amusing. “A-Yi, are you really going to be a top student?”
“That’s right. I plan to take the top spot for fun, then go to Huainan University to soak up some of that scholarly air before going to study abroad.”
Qi Qing was stunned; Wu Yi had never mentioned these plans before.
However, she didn’t take it too seriously and asked casually, “Uncle Wu won’t agree, will he?”
“That’s why I have to rank first. That’s my bargaining chip.”
She became so absorbed in her watching that Qi Qing felt both annoyed and protective. She set down her chopsticks and turned toward her. “Really, listening to a lecture even while eating. Fine, this lady will show some mercy today and feed you personally.”
Wu Yi finally snapped back to reality and hurriedly grabbed her spoon to take a bite of food. “It’s fine, I’ll eat myself.”
Qi Qing watched with amusement. After a while, she took a tissue to wipe the corner of Wu Yi’s lip, but Wu Yi grabbed it and wiped it herself.
“Qingqing, you’re the best.”
She gave a radiant smile, bright as the sunset, and went back to watching the video.
Qi Qing’s gaze wavered for a moment before she spoke. “Usually you’re as imperious as an Imperial Princess. Today, this lady has broken tradition to feed you, and you actually refused?”
Wu Yi acted as if she hadn’t heard and didn’t respond.
A few minutes later, a middle-aged man in a suit knocked and entered. Qi Qing had him sit at the furthest point opposite them.
“You can report from there; we’re listening.”
The man was in his forties with a friendly face. Hearing this, he wasn’t annoyed at all and sat opposite them.
Qi Qing said impatiently, “Aren’t you going to start?”
The man hurried to smile and began his introduction. “My name is Zhang Tong, and I am the external liaison manager for the Starry Sky Research Institute…”
Neither Wu Yi nor Qi Qing spoke; one was intently focused on the lecture, while the other was drinking sweet soup as if no one else were there. Zhang Tong wasn’t uncomfortable; in fact, he grew more excited as he spoke.
“…Miss Qi, if you aren’t interested in any of the above projects, that’s fine. Our director also knows Professor Chen from the Human Life Sciences Research Institute under the Academy of Sciences in Country M.”
“Professor Chen holds dual doctorates in Life Sciences and Psychology from H University and is hailed as a genius in the scientific community. Professor Chen is currently researching a human emotional fluctuation experiment, which is an unprecedented pioneering feat…”
Wu Yi suddenly turned her head, her gaze sharp as she stared at Zhang Tong. “Which Professor Chen?”
Zhang Tong’s throat was dry from talking, and finally hearing them ask a question, he hurried to say, “Professor Chen Lei. He is…”
Wu Yi didn’t hear a single word of what came next.
Her heart was in turmoil, and a raging fire surged within her, crackling with fury.
“Pro! Fes! Sor! Chen!”
“I didn’t go looking for you, yet you’ve delivered yourself to my door. Very well!”
Seeing her inquiry, Qi Qing thought she was interested and helped by asking a few more questions. Zhang Tong was exceptionally excited; if he could pull in sponsorship from these wealthy families, the research institute wouldn’t have to close down.
Wu Yi said nothing more after her one question. Qi Qing actually had no interest in any of this and was nodding off from boredom, finally interrupting impatiently.
“Alright, that’s enough for today. You can head back first. What was your name again?”
Zhang Tong hurried to say, “My surname is Zhang.”
Qi Qing waved her hand. “Mr. Zhang, go back and wait for word.”
Zhang Tong specialized in gathering funds for various research institutes and was accustomed to observing people’s expressions. Seeing Qi Qing’s impatience, his heart sank halfway.
Just as he was about to leave, Wu Yi said, “That Professor Chen sounds interesting. Arrange a meeting when you have time.”
Zhang Tong’s worry turned to joy, and he immediately agreed.
As soon as he left, Qi Qing asked, “A-Yi, are you really interested in that life sciences, genetics, and human emotional fluctuation experiment stuff?”
Wu Yi shook her head. “I have no interest in the experiment. I want to meet that Professor Chen.”
She didn’t want Qi Qing to ask more about it, so she immediately changed the subject. “Qingqing, the security I asked you to find—have you contacted them?”
Qi Qing gave her a reproachful look. “Leaving everything to me; you really are a pampered lady.”
Qi Qing was an only child whose father, Qi Hao, doted on his wife excessively. He only had three sisters and her grandfather was also an only child, so their household was peaceful, a rare thing among prestigious families.
Leaving many things for Qi Qing to handle saved a lot of trouble.
Wu Yi knew she was joking and shook her arm. “Good Qingqing, you’re the only one who can help me.”
The two had grown up together. Wu Yi had been hot-tempered since childhood, prone to snapping at any moment, and it was usually Qi Qing who backed down to coax her. Seeing her act spoiled now, Qi Qing felt quite satisfied.
She said, “Fine, of course I’ll help you. No word yet, but I’ll let you know when there’s news.”
“By the way, why must you find these two specific guards? There are plenty of elite security in the Dawn Empire. I could even find you retired special agents if you wanted.”
Wu Yi smiled. “The two I’m looking for are exactly that.”
“Oh? How do you know about them?”
“I heard about them by chance and was curious to find them. You know my personality; if there’s something I want to know, I’ll definitely investigate it thoroughly.”
This immediately quashed Qi Qing’s curiosity. She pulled Wu Yi toward the car.
Once seated, Wu Yi habitually slid open her phone screen.
Zero new messages in the inbox.
The light in her eyes dimmed.
Just then, the phone screen suddenly lit up, and Wu Yi’s eyes brightened as well.
But looking closely, it was the house landline.
She answered with little enthusiasm. After a brief greeting, she froze completely.
Qi Qing nudged her curiously. “A-Yi, what happened?”
Wu Yi was still nodding into the phone, three nods in a row before saying, “Qingqing, turn around quickly. Take me home.”
Seeing her urgency, Qi Qing had to instruct the driver to turn back.
Wu Yi hung up and looked over with a smile. “She’s back.”
Qi Qing blanked for a second, then realized who she was talking about. She asked in disbelief, “Auntie Su is back? So soon? I thought it would take a week.”
Wu Yi’s gaze was complex as she murmured, “Yes. From the South Pole to Huaihai is a very long way.”
Qi Qing knew some of the Wu family’s history. Hearing this, she said nothing for a long time, simply looking at Wu Yi with a sigh in her eyes.
She remembered the first time she met Wu Yi as a child. It was in the dead of winter, amidst ice and snow, and Wu Yi was hiding in a corner crying.
She was crying while stomping on a doll on the ground.
“Why are you crying?”
“None of your business!”
“That’s Snow White. Why are you stepping on her?”
“I said none of your business! Go away!”
Their first meeting had ended on a sour note.
