After Losing My Memory, I Went After My Archenemy - Chapter 27
“Knock, knock.”
“President, are you inside?”
After a day of bumpy car travel, having washed off the dust and simply tidied herself up, Yan Nannan arrived outside Lin Xi’s room.
There was no answer; the room was completely silent.
Did she go out?
Where would she go so late?
Feeling disappointed, Yan Nannan had no choice but to return alone. As she turned the corner of the hallway, she unexpectedly ran into Xia Rou, who had returned with Lin Xi. She froze instantly.
So, the two of them were together?
Yan Nannan quickly gave a greeting, pretending nothing was wrong, and walked away quickly. It was only after returning to her room that she finally released the suppressed emotions.
First, she inexplicably made objects crash loudly, then she acted impatient with everything she did. The roommate sharing her room was completely baffled, having no idea how she had offended her. Recalling that Yan Nannan had been acting moody and volatile since morning, the roommate decided it was best to keep a distance and not provoke her.
Lin Xi and Xia Rou’s rooms were directly across from each other, so there was no need for one to escort the other.
“Thank you for what happened just now,” Xia Rou said, turning back with a sweet smile as she opened her door.
The Alpha’s action of opening the door paused for a second, and then she silently returned to her own room without a word.
Soon after Xia Rou returned to her room, she received a call from home, mainly to confirm her safety.
“I’m staying with everyone, not sleeping in one room, but I mean everyone’s rooms are next to each other, so it’s very safe. Don’t worry.”
After finally calming her anxious mother and ending the call, Shen Miao called her shortly after.
“You actually ran off to a godforsaken place like Qingshan for fieldwork?”
“Don’t say that. Actually, the scenery here is quite beautiful.”
“Hey, hey, don’t talk as if you really went to that remote place for the scenery. You know the real intention isn’t about the view.” After a pause, Shen Miao couldn’t help but add, “Honestly, having known you for so many years, this is the first time I’ve seen you so serious and persistent about something. Although as a good girlfriend, I shouldn’t pour cold water on you, but… if one day your memory returns, will you truly not regret it?”
Xia Rou had considered Shen Miao’s question.
After all, who would willingly overturn everything they had before?
But then, who cares?
“Even if I remember, so what? Feelings for someone won’t change. Don’t worry, even if that day comes, I won’t collapse. I’m Xia Rou, after all! My mental fortitude is excellent!”
“Alright, alright, hearing you say that reassures me. I wish you good news on this trip!”
The next morning, after the large group had breakfast at the hotel, they took a minibus down the mountain to a local ancient town, which was the first stop on their itinerary. After getting off the bus and entering the ancient town, everyone was free to move around and photograph whatever they wished.
Xia Rou was a beginner and spent quite some time tinkering with her newly bought camera. When she finally looked up, she realized the crowd had long dispersed, and even Lin Xi was nowhere to be seen.
She stood there lost for a while before having no choice but to bravely walk down the ancient town’s streets.
Sometime later, a police siren suddenly echoed through the ancient town, and people gradually began to gather in one spot.
“Did you hear? A young Omega girl suddenly fainted.”
Bystanders discussed this as they walked past behind Lin Xi.
At that moment, with barely any hesitation, Lin Xi immediately put down her filming equipment and rushed toward the direction of the crowd.
Only upon arriving did she realize the so-called fainted Omega girl was not Xia Rou, but someone else. Lin Xi suddenly realized she had been worrying too much, and she scoffed at herself.
Since when did she care so much about Xia Rou’s safety?
Turning around, Lin Xi met eyes with Xia Rou, who was eating an ice cream cone across from her.
The young girl immediately gave her a bright smile and scurried forward.
“Are you here to watch the excitement too? I came over when I heard the siren.”
Lin Xi secretly clenched her fingers, glanced sideways at her, and said, “Let’s go together.”
“Huh?” Xia Rou was stunned, but before she could react, the other person had already walked forward, and she quickly followed.
“Are you asking me to walk with you?”
“The ice cream here tastes great. Do you want one? I’ll go buy you a cone.”
“Lin Xi, walk slower~”
That night, everyone had dinner near the ancient town and then returned to the hotel on the mountain early.
The next morning, everyone was to head to a village halfway up the mountain for fieldwork. It was said that the clouds and mist were especially beautiful during this season. Before setting off, someone placed a bet: whoever captured the most beautiful mountain mist would be recommended by the president to be featured in this year’s campus annual report.
Everyone was enthusiastic and full of spirit.
Xia Rou blended in, busy touching up her makeup. It was all because the meeting time was too early; she hadn’t even had time to get ready properly.
“Xia Rou, someone is looking for you.” Someone suddenly called her name.
Xia Rou followed the voice and turned around, seeing Xia Zhi standing there with a travel bag on her back. Xia Rou’s initially relaxed expression instantly froze.
“Why are you here?”
“Surprised, sis? I came here specifically to visit you.” Xia Zhi rushed over and intimately hooked her arm around Xia Rou’s.
“Xia Rou, is this your sister?”
“Your sister is so pretty too.”
Faced with the attention of the people around them, Xia Rou couldn’t show the discord between the sisters, so she forced herself to play along.
In this way, Xia Rou had to bring Xia Zhi onto the bus to join everyone on the trip.
The village located halfway up the mountain was almost completely isolated from the world in the past. It had only gained a little notoriety in the last two years after being discovered by online influencers. The village had begun receiving tourists, but due to its remote location and inconvenient infrastructure, it had not developed into a popular tourist attraction.
With Xia Zhi present, Xia Rou had no chance to be alone with Lin Xi. She decided to lead Xia Zhi to a secluded spot and get straight to the point.
“Tell me, what is your intention for following me this time?”
“Sis, I just came to visit you. What other intention could there be?” Xia Zhi wore an innocent expression.
“Stop pretending. Our relationship isn’t that good anymore.”
“I really just came to visit you. Fine if you don’t believe me.”
Xia Zhi pretended to be angry, but still continued to walk near Xia Rou without leaving.
The weather on the mountain was bad, and rain often came without warning. They were caught off guard and, in their hurried run, randomly hid inside a dilapidated, small tile-roofed house.
The house was overgrown with weeds, the walls were damaged, and there was an indescribably foul smell.
“Whatever your intention is, you should leave here as soon as possible. I don’t want to argue with you, and I have no heart for conflict.”
Xia Rou stood inside the house, brushing off the water from her clothes, completely unaware of Xia Zhi’s actions behind her.
The next second, the door of the house was suddenly shut. Xia Rou immediately rushed to the door, and through the gap in the wooden door panel, she could faintly see Xia Zhi’s hand.
“Xia Zhi, what are you doing? Open it up!”
“Are you crazy?”
“Xia Zhi!”
Xia Rou frantically pounded on the door, but was met with the other party’s total disregard. Xia Rou was certain Xia Zhi had locked her in this remote, dilapidated small house.
Soon, the person who had done this slipped away, leaving her alone inside, calling out to no avail.
There was no cell phone signal on the mountainside. When she realized the hope of calling for help on her phone was also shattered, Xia Rou’s emotional defenses finally started to break.
The fieldwork ended early due to the rain. Everyone quickly gathered at the parking spot, but after taking a headcount, they realized Xia Rou was missing.
“Xia Zhi, wasn’t your sister with you?” a club member asked.
“You mean my sister? She went back to the hotel a while ago. She said she was feeling a bit sick to her stomach soon after we got off the bus this morning, so she took a ride with a local person and left.” Xia Zhi lied with practiced ease, showing no signs of deceit.
Only Lin Xi felt a slight suspicion, but everyone was rushing to return and didn’t investigate further.
By the time everyone got back to the hotel, it was getting dark. The weather on the mountain was still terrible; even though it wasn’t officially nighttime, the entire sky was so dim it looked like it was covered by a black cloth.
No one really paid attention to when Xia Rou had supposedly returned to the hotel early. Everyone went back to their rooms, socializing as usual or closing the door to do their own things.
Only Lin Xi went alone to the front desk to ask. After learning that Xia Rou had not returned, she borrowed the hotel’s car without another word and drove back to the village to look for her.
It was terrifyingly dark inside the house, and shadows occasionally flitted past the door crack. Xia Rou was extremely frightened, but she didn’t want to be locked inside forever, so she began trying to save herself.
She didn’t know how Xia Zhi had managed to shut the door, but a broken house like this might not have a proper lock. Thinking this, she tried to kick the door, but it still wouldn’t open.
Xia Rou then used her phone light to find a piece of thick wood inside the house, and used this wood to ram the door. Once, twice, three times… she didn’t know how many times she rammed it. She felt like the skin on her fingers had worn raw when the door suddenly burst open. Only after getting out did she realize Xia Zhi had used a piece of wood from the ground to latch the door. This already decaying piece of wood, having been soaked by the rain, had become fragile and easily broken, allowing Xia Rou to escape.
She was now exhausted, sleepy, and cold. Alone on the remote mountainside, she could only try to walk toward the village, believing that if she met a kind villager, she would be saved.
Holding on to this conviction, Xia Rou mustered her courage and walked forward.
As she walked, she suddenly heard a sound like a wolf howling. Terrified, her foot slipped, and she tumbled down the adjacent hillside, rolling end over end. She was scratched countless times by branches and hard rocks during the fall. Xia Rou felt that her body was battered and bruised, and tears instantly streamed down from the pain all over her body.
Was she going to die here?
Dampness, mud, injuries, darkness—nothing could be worse than the present moment.
Just then, a faint voice came from above her head, seemingly calling her name.
“I’m here! I’m here!” Xia Rou desperately banged rocks together to make a sound.
A moment later, Lin Xi found her. Seeing her curled up there, sitting alone, she rushed forward immediately, squatting down to examine her anxiously: “Are you okay?”
Seeing the person who had come, the dirt-covered Xia Rou pouted tearfully. The next second, she threw herself into the other person’s arms recklessly and burst into loud sobs.
Lin Xi’s body jolted from the impact, but upon hearing her distressed cries, her heart ached, and she couldn’t speak for a moment.
“Wuwuwuwu, I thought I was going to die here today. Wuwuwuwu, I’m so hurt and so scared, Lin Xi…”
“It’s alright, it’s alright. I’m here.”
Lin Xi wrapped her arms around Xia Rou’s back, slightly tightening her embrace, and softly comforted her.
